Program monolingual

When using the program monolingual to remove languages, should I mess around with the other options,(architecture, inputs) and if so which ones can I delete safely, for the MacBook pro that I have.?

NO! Don't touch either Architecture or Inputs.
One wrong selection and you disable your keyboard.
Most people would consider that a BAD thing.
Stick to deleting unneeded languages.
If you need more space,I recommend you get a larger HD.

  • Applications won't launch.  (Quit unexpectedly)

This problem just started today. I think it may have something to do with cleaning out my hard drive of stuff I didn't need. I ran 2 programs, Monolingual, which deletes all unnecessary languages from Safari, Adium, etc. The other program I ran was iDefrag, which obviously defragments your hard drive.
Now, a bunch of my applications won't open, but rather I get the '___ quit unexpectedly' dialog. For some reason, iTunes seems unaffected, but Safari and Firefox and Disk Utility and a whole slew of other apps (pretty much every Apple app that I tried to open) won't even open, and I get the 'quit unexpectedly' message.
Does anyone have ANY clue why this is happening? I've tried restarting, but nothing. And I can't even repair my disk permissions because Disk Utility and Terminal won't open, they are messed up as well.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, make sure you have sufficient disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • "Adobe Acrobat could not install correctly"

Has a fix been found yet for this damn annoying problem.
I get this message regularly on my Mac G5, Leopard 10.5.2. I must have reinstalled the program about 5 times by now. It works properly for a few days, then this-
"Adobe Acrobat could not install correctly"
"A required component was not found, please restore the Adobe Acrobat folder from your original CD".
Doing a forum search, I noticed people were having this same problem as far back as October 2007. Has it been resolved yet, and if so how?

I discovered that when I initially install Acrobat it works fine. However, after I run the program Monolingual, which removes languages and architectures that my Intel Mac does not require, Acrobat has this exact failure.
I went to Monoligual's website and in their FAQ's they address this issue. (http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/faq.php) You simply need to add the Acrobat folder (/Applications/Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional) to the Monolingual preferences list and then uncheck both boxes. Also, with Acrobat Professional 8.1.4 you need to add the folder /Library/Printers/PPDs to the list and uncheck both boxes, because Monoligual will delete four Asian Language folders from this folder and Acrobat will give you an error if they are not there.
So, if you use Monolingual, or some other program that removes languages and architectures, this might be your solution.

  • MacBook does not startup unless I reset the PRAM.

Several times now I have turned on my MacBook and been greeted by a dead, blue screen. The computer does not load Mac OS X from this state. If I reset the PRAM (by forcing a shutdown and then holding CMDOPT+PR when the computer turns on) Mac OS X loads. Why does this happen?
I have made some modifications to the computer that may have influenced its performance.
    1. Upgraded to 2GB RAM.
    2. Uninstalled extra languages using the program Monolingual.
    3. Disabled Dashboard.
    4. Disabled Spotlight.
    5. Disabled Journaling on my harddrive.
    6. Repaired disk permissions.
    7. Cleared logs and caches and ran Cron Scripts using the program Ultimate Task.

I think I have some other information, or hypotheses which i'd love other users to share information on.
I notice, that when i have this problem, that in System Preferences/Startup Disk that the MAC OS X system is not selected/highlighted.
Also, I was thinking, perhaps this is due to having bootcamp/windows installed ?
    So 2 questions:
Do users experiencing this problem have Bootcamp installed with a windows system on their mac
    and
After getting the dark grey screen and starting up (by resetting PRAM), does the System Preferences/Startup Disk that the MAC OS X system is not selected/highlighted ?
If this is the case, I guess we have a bit more information to go by...
If users that are experiencing this issue do not have bootcamp installed, then at least we can rule out bootcamp (since it is a beta).
If users are reporting the same nonselection of the system volume in system preferences, then at least we're talking about the same problem.

  • Reinstalling os X from disc to save space ... am i too late??

    Hello all,
I didnt realize that you could reinstall os X from the disc to eliminate a lot of extra space before I basically transferred all my data from my old PC to my new macbook. is there any other options for me to save space? I DL'ed the program monolingual which took out some, but what about some other apps...
    your thoughtS?
    thanks
    Erik

If you want to start fresh, you will have to re-transfer all your data.
You can always just delete programs that you do not want. A Mac is not like Windows where installer programs spew stuff all over the hard drive. In general, apps are self-contained and have a pref file int he library and that's about it.
If a program has an uninstaller, run it. If not, drag it to the trash and empty it. You can use Spotlight to find any stragglers.

  • Removing Printer Files

My trusty old iBook only has a small hard drive (30 gig ) and I don't really want to replace the hard drive at this stage as I'm hoping to upgrade sooner than later. However until that happy day things are getting rather tight with available space on the hard drive, I do keep as much as possible on an external drive and have gained some extra space by removing all applications I don't use. I came across a handy program ( Monolingual ) that removed language files I'll never use and gained an extra gig+, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can do the same type of thing with the huge number of printer files stored in the main library which again I will never need, or by removing these will cause problems elsewhere.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
Go to Library/Receipts. If there are printer software .pkg's there that you know you don't need, just send them to the trash, empty the trash and reboot.
A good way to keep track of which files are taking up the most space is this program:
    What Size

  • Making 10.3.9 use less memory?

Hello - I have 10.3.9 running on a 933 MHz ibook with 640 MB Ram...is there anyway of disabling certain extensions or other functionality that would make the computer a little less sluggish? I realize that the best thing to do would be to add a 1 gig Ram chip but I would rather not spend the cash right now.
    Thanks - Ryan

If you have programs that you don't use, delete those as well.
For example: Garageband, iDVD, any games that came with OS X.
To see what's on your hard drive and how much space is being taken up you can use the program WhatSize. Also, the program MonoLingual will remove any extra languages you have on your computer.
Both programs can be found at http://www.versiontracker.com

  • Will someone help with question?

My question is: Do I need to re-install Snow Leopard?
    Here is what happened:
I downloaded a program "Monolingual" to remove other languages (mine is English) which I began removing and discovered I should have un-checke "Enlgish - United States" but had only un-checked English so I cancelled the "Remove" after it had run for a period of time.  I received the message that some files had not been erased.
A tab at the top showed I could removed unused "Architectures" so I began removing PC powe-point architectures etc - and begarn removing them when I suddenly remember some programs I use have that achitecture and stopped the program.
To be able to use those programs, and I am not sure how far the removal program had progressed,
Do I need to re-install Snow Leopard.
    I would appreciate your help.
    Vernon

If you have a full backup (clone or Time Machine) restore from that. It's always a good idea to have some form of reliable backup. Otherwise, yes I would reinstall (not erase and install) Snow. Just choose the install option. This will give you new system files while preserving your user and network settings as well as all apps. When finished, update to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update.

Monolingual is very bad news and it will hardly save you any disk space.
    PPC means PowerPC, not powerpoint.

  • Re: Using monolingual with caution.

Michael, although myself not a native english speaker, some suggestions:
Monolingual is a program that can remove other languages that installed by default by OS X installer that you don't want or use. It also offer to trim down the Input Menu and Architecture.
    Here are the tips:
    1. Since you only run this once, you can run it directly from the virtual drive that mounts after you double-clicked the .dmg that was downloaded.
    2. Uncheck the languages you want to keep, e.g. uncheck English, British English and US English in order to keep them.
    3. Never play with the input menu for it is not worth the space you save compared to the risk of losing control of your keyboard.
    4. Never remove and play with the architecture options as well, since you might lose the ability to run Rosetta for non universal programs.
    Good Luck!

Is this Tip considered Complete? Please advise

  • Running Out of Memory - Any Files, Programs I Can Run or Delete?

Looking to erase some programs and/or files that are not needed to increase my memory.
Is there any recommendations or a sort or clean-up program I can run on my mac?
    Thanks for your time guys!

Memory is RAM - programs are stored on disk which seems to be what you are talking about
You should have a minimum of 10 GB of free disk at all times - how much do you have?
The hints in the Apple link are all good
1 - add an external hard drive - this is cheap, quick and the most effective solution
2 - get rid of unnecessary language support as a quick (and small) improvement - Monolingual - http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/ - is an easy way to do that (be sure not to eliminate English)
3 - use a memory mapping program to show you where you are using memory - grand perspective is good - http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
Stay away from automatic programs like Spring Cleaning - you are likely to mess up - uch better to control it yourself

  • Help!  Rosetta programs aren't working

The programs that require rosetta to run are not working at all. The only thing I've done recently is run monolingual, but I didn't think it would have erased anything crucial.
MS Office, fugu, WM player, and a printer driver are the Power PC programs that aren't running. Any suggestions?

    OK,
    Lets try this now ...
Locate the program you're interested in running.
Lets say for example that you want to execute the TextEdit application by hand.
    Switch into the /Applications/TextEdit.app folder.
Open up a terminal, and type:
    cd /Applications/TextEdit.app
    List the contents:
    ls -al
You should see a subfolder called Contents
    Switch into that directory:
    cd Contents
Finally, you should see another subfolder called MacOS, switch into that:
    cd MacOS
You should now be in the following directory:
    /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS
if you do a directory listing there (ls -al), you will see the executable binary TextEdit.
    To execute this binary, type:
    ./TextEdit
You should be able to do this with any application -- Try this with your Rosetta Applications (just substitute the Application name with TextEdit) and see what result you get in the terminal window.
    Good Luck,
    Golan.

  • Installing Monolingual for more HD space

I understand that many users are deleting(?) the basic app's that come with the MB,and then re-installing certain programs...such as monolingual.....are there any downsides to this? I think I heard somewhere that monolingual does increase HD space, but has a bug (defect)....???

To further elaborate on avoiding problems, see these FAQ's from the Monolingual homepage:
    Q. Monolingual made my OS X installation unusable.
    A. Chances are that you have accidently removed the English language files. Some language packs are only a subset of other language packs (for example "U.S. English" is a subset of "English"), so you will have an incomplete OS X installation if you remove "English" but not "U.S. English". In general, you should never remove the English language files unless you know what you are doing.
    Q. Should I remove the non-Intel architectures on my Intel based Mac?
    A. You can use Monolingual to remove non-Intel architectures for your installed applications (even if some of the applications are PowerPC-only; Monolingual is smart enough not to remove PPC forks if those are the only ones in the universal binary). However, you should not strip the System frameworks if you want to use Rosetta. Rosetta needs the PowerPC code for all frameworks used by the emulated application and if it can't find it, you may see messages such as the following in the console:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Cocoa.framework/Versions/A/Cocoa:
    mach-o, but wrong architecture

"I have 60GB of memory and have about 4GB of free space"
I believe your problems are the result of you needing to do some serious house cleaning.
*Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.*
    A few tips:
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • Can time machine restore system language files deleted by "monolingual'?

I've removed some important language files while using monolingual (namely -English (American) -English (British) not realizing these are subset and required).
I should've read the FAQ first... now some programs are appearing in weird character formats.
Can I replace those files with my Time Machine back ups?
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache, I'm hoping!

    Yes.

That's the problem; language files aren't in a central location; each application has it's own set of language files, containing the translations of the messages for that application.

I don't know much about Monolingual; I don't know if it removes language files from your System folders, or only Applications. And if you've installed any apps anywhere else, I don't know if it got them, too.
If you're only having trouble with apps, you might be ok to restore only Applications, but to get everything back the way it was, you'd need to do a full system restore, per #14 in the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Monolingual question

If anyone is familiar with the Monolingual program, I have a question. This great application was reccomended to me by someone on the board. I have used it to delete all the languages besides English from my machine. But there are also two other tabs, one for Input Menu and one for Architecture. I am not really sure what I should do with these. I am trying to clean up disk space and speed up my machine as much as possible, so I want to utilize these if I can, but I don't know exactly what they do and if I should be messing with them. Thanks

This isn't the place for it, but Macs were once faster at processing the data related to graphic files and programs. But Intel and AMD caught up, and then by 2k2 started eclipsing Mac. Apple's switch to Intel is proof enough. Publisher of Maximum PC and Mac Addict(the same pub) has many articles that pretty much show it's either pc's victory or a moot point and limited to which os you like the look/feel of more.
I have a system using WinXP pro and it has a dual core Intel as well(slower at 1.86ghz) with 2 gigs of ddr2 memory. In all respects, it should be marginaly slower then my mac. And it makes my mac wear a dress at gunpoint.
You ask what I run? My school made the mac a requirement for my major(graphic design) so all I put on it was CS2...dude that's ALL. I dont have any games or any programs then what came with the osX install.
For me, CS2 photoshop takes aprox 4 times longer to do the same action that my pc does. I get type lag in my text editor sometimes.
Your mac is " a ton faster" then your old pc...how old is you old PC? I'm curious.
I've taken your post into the realm of mac/win debate and appoligize.
So let's see if there's hope for us. I've stated what I do with, and what's installed on mine; I'll look into monolingual in more depth, and I suggest contacting that developer as you mentioned.
    Good Luck!
