Program windows too large after using migration assistant

This seems like a silly question. I just got my MacBook for Christmas and I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my iMac to the MacBook. It worked great except that the sizes of the program windows remained the same as well, and they are too big on this 13" screen for me to access things that are way down on the bottom of the window. I can't get a hold of the corner tab that allows you to resize the window manually because it is off the bottom of the screen. I did try minimizing/moving the task bar from the bottom of the screen, but the windows are still too big. I discovered the problem in iTunes, but I suspect it is universal. I'd appreciate any help you can offer! Thanks.

I was having problems with my photo booth, when i'd open it up i could only see half of the pics that I had already taken. I couldn't delete them or anything. After reading what you wrote it had dawned on me, maybe it could have been the screen resolution. I followed your steps and now I can delete the pics I didn't want & I can also see the full photo booth thingy [:
even thou I didn't ask a question, you answered mine & thank you very much [:

I was wondering if UN installing then RE installing CS 6 might solve the problem. If this is recommended, I would need complete instructions on doing this. at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

  • Lost list of my wifi networks after using migration assistant / time machine

After using migration assistant / time machine to set up my new Mac I now miss the list of stored preferred Wlan/WiFi networks. So the passwords of wireless networks I. Used in the past are all gone.
Why is time machine not putting those on my new Mac as it does with many other settings?
How can I manually grab this list from my old Mac and out it on the new machine?
Will I find that time machine missed some other lists and settings as well?
    Thanks for help.

I've been working through this procedure this week. It's pretty good, and when it works it appears to work quite well, but there's still some bumps in the road:
    (1) Once you've migrated, Time Machine itself seems to be a little confused and future backups may fail. You might have to start again by changing to a new Time Machine disk on your new laptop. You may lose your older backups, it's not yet clear to me.
    (2) You can't restore from a previous backup during the migration, only the most recent one. (You can restore from an older backup using tools on the install CD if you need to.) I suspect this won't be an issue for you.
    (3) Migration Assistant once you've logged in a Migration Assistant while you're starting up a new machine seem to work slightly differently. For example, sometimes the newest copy of the applications in your Applications folder (say, iMovie) is preserved, sometimes it makes an exact restore of the old Applications folder even if it's an older version of the application.
Overall it's been a pretty good experience, and what you want to do does work, but be prepared for the possibility of some issues. I tried this back in 10.5.0 a few months ago and had a lot of problems, things seem better now under 10.5.2.

  • Mail not working after using migration assistant - what am I missing?

Mail not working after using migration assistant - what am I missing?

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

  • Windows Mail Folders gone in Mac Mail after using migration assistant

I purchased a MacBook Air for my husband and used Migration assistant to transfer all of his files from his PC running Vista. It looked like everything was fine, but when I opened Mac mail, the only messages that were in there was what was in his inbox, junk and trash. Where are all of the folders from Windows Mail he had created? Please help!

  • How to access Time Machine backups after using migration assistant?

Can someone please help me with a TM issue.
My HD died so I fitted a new one.  I figured that I would do a clean install rather than use TM to bring across a whole bunch of 5 year old junk and Aps that all broke after the Leopard -Snow Leopard -Lion -Mountain Lion upgrades.
Installed 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, no issues.  Then used TM to drag and drop all the Applications I actually wanted, still good.  Then used Migration assistant to bring in the remainder of the settings, documents, mail etc.  For some reason you cannot migrate to the current default user so you have to create a new user profile which I did.  New profile was great so I deleted the other profile created at install that was pretty much blank.
At this stage everything looks awesome but I noticed a video clip was missing in a Final Cut project so I went back into TM to retrieve it.  Now, all the documents in my old user profile in TM have a little no entry symbol on them and I do not have permission to look at those files.
It looks as though I am now being treated as someone else on a different machine and no doubt TM will continue to work from this point on but how do I tell it that there is just one user on this machine and I want access to all the historic backups too?
Any advice will be gratefully received.

Many thanks for your response Mende,
I am trying to specifically NOT do a full TM restore because I have some issues with some programs that I cannot delete.  I wanted a fresh start but from what I understand the TM will bring back everything as it was, including all the corrupt system files.  Fixing the TM permissions would be the preferable option.
(I attempted to make a windows partition on my system once, thinking it would make some sort of clever fake-windows desktop supported by Mac coding. It actually wanted me to do a full windows 7 install on the partition with windows install disks so I cancelled the process.  Because it was a partial install I have not been able to uninstall the modifications and my system was crashing regularly due to some sort of stray code).
Just out of interest, if your OSX install is perfectly good, will TM use that or will it still take your OSX from the TM backup?
Apart from that one stray file, my system is now super clean and faster than ever... but maybe there are still some things missing that I haven't noticed yet.

  • Cannot use Creative Cloud in new Mac after using Migration Assistant

I used Migration Assistant to set up my new Mac (new computer is a Retina MacBookPro; so was old computer). I could not open any of my CC apps. When I open Creative Cloud Desktop App it is completely blank (no tabs for Apps, Fonts, Files, etc. -- No means of installing or updating apps). I uninstalled Creative Cloud and reinstalled (several times) but got the same results. I have also deleted all the Application Folders for CC apps that cam ever with Migration Assistant.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • After using migration assistant, Acrobat wont launch on MacOs 10.6.7

Used migration assistant on a new Mini-Mac to bring all the programs/files/settings over. It seems everything came over pretty smooth. The Mini Mac is running OS 10.6.7. I have 3 versions of Acrobat Pro installed and none of them will launch now. When I try to launch Acrobat a dialog comes up saying that "Acrobat quit unexpectedly". Any ideas/suggestions?

As you've discovered some applications don't launch correctly using Migration Assistant. In particular Adobe applications like Acrobat or the Creative Suite should generally be newly installed from their install disks.
It's probably because Adobe applications spread their resources between many different files in many different places. They also are serialized (so they won't be stolen) requiring secret serialization files to be installed. Some of that probably isn't being copied in a way that will make it work after migration assistant.

  • Password not working after using Migration Assistant

Recycled my MacBook to my wife after reinstalling the OS so that it was a fresh machine. However, she wanted to have family photos /videos  on this machine so she has them locally if she takes machine out of house. So, I used Migration Assistant to transfer these from my mini-mac to the MacBook. Of course this meant I then became a named user the MacBook and the Photos/videos were transferred successfully over to my account.
When I log into the MacBook using the newly created account for my wife I of course cannot see the files transferred over in her directory but when I use Finder I can view the Users and can see the files have been transferred into my directory.
If I log out of my wife's acount and try to login to my account my password fails. Pretty sure I'm entering the correct password and the hint comes up with what looks like a valid hint. Can't be 100% sure as have so many passwords but irrespective if also states in the hint message that I can use my Apple ID to reset this passwordh which is what I'd lke to do to avoid confusion
Going back to the mini-mac I've gone to the Apple ID site (so my password to acccess this works) but cannot see how this allows me to reset a passord for a device.
Too be honest I thought the password for MacBook was my Apple ID Password but clearly not as it works to get access to manage my Apple ID
Hopefully I've explained in enough detail but let mw know if more needed

FIxed it myself. Logged in as wife went to System Prefs > Security and managed to change my passwrod from there. Seems a bit strange but hey it worked

  • File permissions screwed up after using Migration Assistant

Hi All, just got a new iMac and am having some problems... hoping someone here can help... especially since Apple support is closed on this Labor Day holiday!
So, i just got a new iMac, with Snow Leopard. It will be replacing my Mac Mini, with Leopard.
I used migration assistant to successfully move over all my files and docs and applications from the mini to the iMac. Took 7 hours but I was happy to see that everything transferred over safely!
Now, prior to the migration, I had the same username and password on both machines (eg. BVsmurfette). However, when I ran the migration assistant program, it prompted me to change one of them b/c it said I couldn't use the same usernames. So, I made the mac mini username = bvsmurfettemini.
Once the migration was complete, I noticed that instead of putting all my files into the user name on my iMac (ie. BVsmurfette), it created a separate user folder called bvsmurfette mini.
Thinking it would be silly to have to go into a separate user folder each time I wanted to access my files, I thought, ok, i'll just move all those files into the bvsmurfette folder. so, i dragged everything over from bvsmurfettemini, into bvsmurfette.
However - now i've noticed that all the file permissions are screwed up!
bvsmurfette doesn't have read/write access to any of the folders or files. bvsmufettemini does.
so - i clicked on each parent folder (eg. documents, music, pictures, movies, eetc), and clicked on "get info" and changed the permissions/sharing so that bvsmurfette was the owner, and clicked the "apply to all enclosed items" option. I thought this would automatically change the permissions/sharing of every single file and sub-folder within each parent folder.
To my surprise - it didn't work. The sub-folders and files within each parent still have their old permission settings. Argh! Can anyone please help? I refuse to believe that the only way around this is to manually click on every single file (which i have thousands and thousands of) and reset the permission settings...
Thanks so much in advance for any help and advice.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions..
Open the Disk Utility application. (Applications/Utilities) and repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • IPhoto won't work on my OLD imac after using migration assistant to my new imac.

So I recently used migration assistant to transfer all of my documents, music, photos, etc. to my new imac which was purchased a month ago.  I used an 800 firewire and the migration was successful and there seems to be not problems on the new computer.  However I went on my old imac to load some new photos off of my iphone.  Much to my dismay iphoto opened up with a window that said, "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."  I don't recall ever using iPhoto on either of the computers during migration assistant aside from putting the old photos into iPhoto on the new computer.  The old imac is a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and it still has iLife '06.  So how would I go about fixing this?  Should I update to iLife '11 or is there an easier way without using new software?  Thank you!

Then that looks ver like you opened the Library on the old machine with the new iPhoto on the new machine, and it has now been updated to iPhoto 11.
Before deciding to update, make sure your machine can run the same version of iPhoto as the new machine.

  • Can't Print after using Migration Assistant, more

    Hi,
I recently used Migration Assistant to transfer all of my apps, files, data, ... from my Power PC G5 1.8mhz running 10.4.11 to my new-ish iMac 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 10.6.8.  It seems like everything worked but I have a few issues.
    1.  I can't print anything now where as before I could on the iMac.  I get a printer error message
    Error: /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMgr failed
    2.  I can access all of the old files of the G5 but I have to log out of the iMac user to one of my old user accounts.  I want to get all of those files into my iMac account and delete those old user accounts.  I especiallly want to get the old photos into my iMac user account's iPhoto.
Thanks for any help.  I'm feeling like an imbecile right about now.  ;-)
    -Don

You should not delete files on the new machine after running MA. The only files I would recommend deleting would be data files you no longer need, however to be safe use Time Machine to back up your machine. One never knows when you may need something again.

  • Desktop is missing after using migration assistant

I just finished installing snow leopard after wiping my hard drive. I logged onto the guest account to use migration assistant and keep the same username. After doing so, I logged back onto my account. I can no longer drag anything onto the desktop. I tried copying the desktop folder from the deleted users folder that migration assistant created, but it doesn't affect the desktop whatsoever. How can I get my desktop back?

Wipe and install Snow Leopard again and this time use the Setup Assistant instead.
Use a Firewire cable (800 to 400 adapter if required) and hold T boot the old Mac into Firewire Target Disk Mode and then connect the cable when the Mac reboots after you just fresh installed Snow Leopard.
This way only one account gets transferred like you intended.
