Programming for the mac without using xcode

Hi
I'm very new to programming for Apple platform. I wanted to clear some doubts which is currently standing as a barrier in getting started.
Can I use a text editor (preferably TextMate), Interface Builder, and the Terminal (without using xcode to write & compile) to develop software for the Mac. I have installed the xcode package (~900 mb image).
Can you point me to some resources on terminal commands for compile, debug codes for the mac. (Obj-C, Cocoa api)
Thank You.

You can use anything you want to develop software for the Mac. In fact, I always encourage people to start out with tutorials and examples using standard UNIX command line tools like vi and gcc. There are plenty of such getting started tutorials for UNIX and Linux.
At some point, however, the command line is going to get cumbersome. You may want go start writing true Mac applications instead if command line tools. Then it will be time to start with Xcode.

  • Predictive typing program for the Mac?

Has anyone heard of a predictive typing program for the Mac?
I am looking for a computer program for typing that "guesses" what word you want based on the first few letters. I have trouble typing because of physical disabilities. Voice recognition is a no go (I also have trouble with my voice).
I know cell phones have this for texting, but I've never seen it for a regular computer. An application I could type in right on my Mac, then cut and paste to other applications like Word, email, etc. Apparently there is a program called "Penfriend" for the PC that does exactly this, but I'm having trouble finding anything Mac-compatible.
Has anyone heard of a company that provides this kind of software? Any ideas on which discussion board might know?
    I have a 2006 Macbook Pro.
    Grateful for any help!

Sorry for the delay, I was waiting for a "good arm" day to start typing!
Were you using the mouse to select words? You can set
hotkeys so you can do it with the keyboard if that
would be easier - you can use a sequence like
option-1,option-2, etc., or whatever else you can
    type easily.
I tried both selecting words with the mouse, and with the coded numbers on the keyboard... I think this may be a problem for me with any predictive typing program, the whole needing-to-pick-up-your-hand thing. KeyStrokes seems about as good as you're going to get (honestly, all those languages, like magic). Maybe with a different keyboard, if I can place the numbers closer to the letters. I'll keep trying.
There's no users group that I know about. I keep
meaning to start a Yahoo list for OS X users who use
assistive tech, but I have so many things that I want
to do *wry grin* Maybe one day...
That's a great idea -- I know there must be something out there, but I've mostly found disease-specific boards (ALS, etc.).

You can use a free alternative like openoffice for this:

or libre office which is a fork of open office:

  • The Best Virus Program For The Mac?

Hi... I currently use Virus Barrier X6 w/ Net Barrier... What is the best Virus/Network Software for the Mac platform? Any Recommendations?
So far I've had no problems and Virus Barrier did detect one virus which came in the form of a junk email attachment. I was able to "eradicate it" and have had no other problems since... Is VirusBarrier a good application for protecting against malware, viruses, etc...? If not can someone recommend? And what about virus protection for the iPad? (I just ordered one)

OK... Than answer me this... Why is it only Windows which can be hit by a virus.
There are several factors that make Windows more vulnerable. (Some may have been changed in the latest Windows.)
Windows users normally run with privileges enabled because they are needed for common operations. OSX users can run in non-administrator accounts for normal use.
Some Windows applications, such as Internet Explorer, can have full access to system files, so can modify the system or install software without the user's knowledge. These applications can blindly follow instructions from web pages or mail messages. OSX's Safari has a limited set of file types considered "Safe", and won't open any others that may be downloaded. The worst that a "Safe" file can do is play a media file, or open a disk image to show the files contained, and instructions on installing. The user would have to start the installation, and enter an administrator name and password, to modify the system. You will be warned the first time you try to open a downloaded file that is an application, or wants to start an application.
Window's mail applications are happy to take commands from other applications to send files to other computers. OSX Mail will ask for permission when a new application tries to send mail.
To try and improve security, Windows has added many warnings for activities that could be suspicious, but they can occur so often that users often just click OK without checking.
Windows has the capability of automatically running application from a disc when it is inserted. This feature was used on CDs by music publishers to install new drivers to prevent copying, but can also install a virus. Just plugging in an infected USB memory stick can automatically infect your computer. Thee have been cases legitimate distributing of discs or memory sticks that were infected. IBM unknowingly distributed some recently at a security conference. There were infected USB sticks left in a parking lot of a government facility. Somebody who found one, plugged it into his computer to try and identify the person who may have lost it. It immediately installed a virus on the computer, which was on a secure, protected, network At one time, Mac OS had this "feature" but it was removed long before OSX, because it made it so easy to infect a computer. (There were some pre-OSX Mc viruses.)
Why are Macs and OS X invulnerable to viruses?
They are not invulnerable, but not as easy to infect. Occasionally security holes are found, but Apple provides security updates reasonably quickly.
I've never heard Apple claim there are no viruses out there for OS X and I don't think they would do so...
I think they did claim that in some TV ads. They didn't claim that there would never be any, though.
I'm not trying to start an argument... Rather trying to find out about some software. All I've received (aside from one) is there apparently are no viruses for OS X. Whatever...
    Maybe they are right.
I've been in the IT Field long enough to know anything is possible. And even disconnecting from a network still doesn't guarantee anything. I'm sure you've put data CDs in your Mac.
Yes, but unlike Windows, that can't install anything automatically.
Maybe the word "Best" wasn't the right choice... I was looking for more of a comparison and instead I get another smart @ss answer.
That doesn't mean the answer is wrong. There are currently no OSX viruses out there. The anti-virus companies are desperately looking for some; so far unsuccessfully. They may even be trying to create some. That doesn't stop them ffrom climing tht there are such viruses. They often list the pre-OSX ones.

  • Are there any recommendations for virus checking/removal programs for the Mac?

Is there any recommendations for virus checking/removal programs for the iMac and MacBrook Pro running OS 10.6.7?

as has been said, you need no AV on your Mac. more info here: Mac Virus/Malware Info.
if, however, you exchange files with windows users on a regular basis, you might want to install ClamXav lest you pass an infected file on without realizing it.

  • What is the best spyware/virus protection program for the mac?

I'm new to the whole virus protection thing, and I know there are very few viruses out there for the mac, but better safe then sorry right? Plus i'm mainly getting it for the spyware protection anyway. Does Leopard already have some protection for it? Or would it be better to buy a new program? Thanks.

Normally the best defense against Virus and other scrap on the net is the User. Never agree to open something you are not sure about. Don't visit dangerous sites, and think twice before make a gesture.
After almost 25 years on Mac, and with X system, the only use for a AntiVirus is you can pass Virus to PC user but that ot effect your Mac. If you use Parallels or Bootcmp (or booth) you need a AntiVirus and Anti what the need on the PC, because that take 20 minutes on PC to be infected.

  • What is the best desktop publishing program for the Mac?

When I had a PC I used several excellent DTP programs: Adobe Pagemaker and Serif Page Plus. Pagemaker was supplanted by Adobe InDesign, and Page Plus is written for the PC only. Years ago, it used to be Quark. Too expensive. So what is the alternative for the Mac?

Make sure the seller that sells older versions of the Adobe CS suites, if this was the sellers own software,  has de authorized or unregistered the software they are selling. Also, make sure the seller gives you all of the registration info needed for you to register and authorize this software in your own Adobe account.
Male sure you get the sellers contact info in case something doesn't go right with the registration process.
The seller may need to provide you with info they forgot to five to you or you may need.
If, you have any issues with registering the software, Adobe has a 24 hour live tech support online messaging support system that you can access on the Adobe website.
    Good Luck!

  • What are the best Anti-virus anti spam programs for the Mac?

I think the title said it all....
    Cheers,
    Bass.

It is particularly difficult to programme a virus for
the Mac, considering that to move or change anything
in the system requires expressed authentication from
    the user.
That's true, except for users running as admin. Admin tasks and even some root tasks can be done from an admin account without any authentication.
Many people only have a single account on their Mac, and so they are running all the time as admin. These users are more vulnerable to attacks than users who save their admin account for real admin tasks and do everything else from a non-admin account.

  • Professional CG program for the Mac?

We've recently begun using FCP at our facility, but I am finding the built in CG's to be less than professional.
LiveType and Motion both require rendering them into movie clips, and the FCP and Boris CG's are barely useable (ie- they have none of the features found in an Inscriber or Deko product- which are true CGs)
Surely other professionals are using FCP and have need of multiple CG pages that can be updated regulary, sized easily on the timeline as the VO lengths vary, and are professional in their interface for user-friendly font sizing, editing, etc.
Please contribute here what Mac-based professional programs you know of and use with FCP. Thanks. I will post this in the "FCP" discussion as well in hopes of getting some responses.

Welcome to the family but, umm, no, please don't do that.
"Professional" is relative. You get out of these tools what you are willing to put into them. You might add After Effects and Photoshop to your resources. I can't imagine a more professional set of tools.
The distinguishing features of the tools you mention may indeed be missing from software-based character generation systems but they have not been deterrents for most of us. If you're like me, you're going to find many more things to despise about FCP than Apple's choice of titling tools.

  • I use digital voice editor 3 on my pc..... want to convert to a program for the MAC.  Any suggestions????

    Hi!
Ohhhh how I hope someone out there can help me with this issue!  I use Digital Voice Editor 3 on my pc and would prefer to use my MAC however don't know of any program similar/comparable to DVE 3.
Anyone know of anything out there I can use instead of what I'm using on the pc????
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

The best? A PowerMac (tower). Mainly due to the fact the the iMac isn't expandable. For example, all Macs have one bus for all their Firewire ports; adding a PCI Firewire card to a tower system is cheap and easy and creates a second Firewire bus that helps avoid dropped frame issues when capturing to or recording from an external Firewire drive from your DV device. Can't do that on an iMac though ... no PCI slots.
Also, having the capability of adding a second internal hard drive is something totally lacking in an iMac. If you're editing DV/DVCam/HDV, you'll get much better throughput with a second internal drive that an external drive. And with some kits available, you can have up to 5 SATA drives inside a G5 tower. The capacity for more RAM is a plus also ... I'd reccomend at least 2 gigs minimum ... but you can add more as needed.

  • Is there a affordable AutoCAD program for the Mac?

I used TurboCad on my old PC which worked well with the MicroStation program the FAA uses. I tried another version on my MacBook Pro, but it seems to have too many quirks and is difficult to use. I really need a program that simply operates in the 2D environment with the ability to convert .dwg, .dgn, and .dxf file formats to .pdf. I have been unsuccessful in finding any online, unless I am not wording the searches correctly in the MacWorld. If anyone is familiar with using a MAC for engineering purposes, please advise. Thanks!

    TurboCAD Mac P...
    PowerCADD
    VectorWorks
    Domus.Cad
These are or should be similar to what you are using on the PC.

  • What a good email program for the Mac?

I can't use Mac mail anymore because Comcast (or somebody) has blocked some ports and Comcast can't tell me what the problem is. The problem seems to be with ingoing and outgoing ports but Comcast no longer shows an ougoing port in preferences so I can't change it. I've been using Comcast's email and it's not an option. It's too ugly and unstable.
So my question is....can some of you give me your opinions as to a good free user-friendly email client and tell me why you like it? Email is something I use real often and would like a nice program to work with.

Strangely, Comcast acted as if the Outgoing ports don't exist any more. I kept asking what the number of the port was and the Comcast person kept sidetracking me. It doesn't appear in preferences. I don't think they know anything about other email clients and can't answer our questions. I don't know why email has to be such a problem. I liked Mac mail well enough but just can't get it to work any more.
I don't know how to answer your questions and apologize for that but I do appreciate your trying to help me.

  • Beginner programming for the mac

I am a Family Physician unhappy with the current offerings of Electronic Medical Records. I was wondering where I would start to learn how to develop my own.
    Thanks
    Marc Chasin, M.D., FAAFP

Well, firstly I am in no rush. I don't mind
    learning as I go.
    2. Requirements of the software is to track my
patients and laboratory values and clinical notes.Maybe not here, but somewhere in your notes on this software you need to get quite a bit more detailed with this.
    >
    3. I have no programming knowledge
    4. I think I may have to learn from scratch.
I do not need it to run on my PDA or through a web
    browser.
    Thanks
MarcWell then, you've some choices. In my experience it seems that people in your position have picked up a copy of Microsoft Access and used it to create a database for this. It requires very little programming experience up front and gives you something you can work with fairly quickly. If your intent, however, is to learn Java then it's likely going to be a bit longer of a road for you. I would start with the ever popular tutorials and work through all of the basic, swing and JDBC stuff, keeping your project in mind. Try to use use cases from your project as examples when you're learning new stuff (and be prepared to re-write or just throw away chunks of it several times).
    Good Luck

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.
