Programs close when Macbook sleeps

I am new to Mac.
I open mail and some browsers. I then leave my macbook and it automatically locks after a few minutes, I presume it eventually goes to sleep. When I unlock after the screen has gone black, then all my programs closed.
I cannot download anything big and leave it to finish.
I have changed all the settings in the "Energy Saver" to never.
Also when I close the lid and open it all my programs are closed.
Hope someone can help.

Just a guess, but under Security in System Preferences, do you have your Mac set to log out after a short period of inactivity? If so, the log out process will quit any open applications. You may want to check your settings here and possibly adjust them.
Good luck!

why do my programs close when computer goes to sleep?

What do you mean by "close"? Your open applications stay open when you put your computer to sleep. However, if you have an app like iMovie open, for example, and you are exporting a video, than exporting will pause when your computer is asleep.

  • Program closes when trying to select file

I have Elements 10 and use a Windows 7 machine.  When scrolling to select a file to open the program closes.  This occurs when I scroll down to RAW files.  It happens before I actually select a file.  The program does not freeze but just closes.  Help welcomed.

    Can you try resetting preferences?
To know how to rest preferences, check the following help document. Please note that for PSE9,only the first method would work

Also, please follow the steps mentioned below to obtain the crash dumps/logs on your Windows machine:
    Launch “Registry Editor” (regedit.exe)
    Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting
Create a new registry key “LocalDumps” (without the quotes)
Add two registry values under “LocalDumps” as follows:
    Name: DumpFolder | Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ | Data: %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps
    Name: DumpType | Type: REG_DWORD | Data: 1
When the application crashes you will find the crash dump at <BootDrive>:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\CrashDumps
Please collect the crash dump and share it with us as an attachment (zipped file – .zip). This will help us analyze the report and fix it for you.

  • Programs quit when machine sleeps

Hi gang, just got a new MBP and all of my programs quit when the machine goes to sleep, the old one didn't do that. I'm sure it's a pref somewhere (but not in energy or security, unless it's oddly named). Any direction would be most appreciated. Thanks.

  • Safari closes when MacBook Pro sleeps

    Hi everyone
I recently upgraded to Yosemite (10.10.1) and have noticed that when my Macbook Pro goes to sleep (on battery and when plugged in), Safari (8.0) shuts down without warning or notification, taking all my open tabs with it.  Any idea what is going on?
    Thanks!

There are at least three ways for the MBP to sleep.
"Natural" sleep by just leaving it alone.
Forced sleep by hitting the Option-Cmd-Eject keys
and forced by closing the cover.
I would first see if all these sleeps give you the same crash.
Since you did an upgrade, it is most likely something from your previous install, but that is not guaranteed.

  • Apple TV  - TV program closes when using Macbook?

I was watching a TV program on my Apple TV 2 yesterday.
The program was purchased from iTunes and was/is available on iCloud.
Therefore I was watching it straight from iCloud over my home wifi.
However about half way through I turned my Macbook on and went into iTunes. This stopped the progam from playing and took me to the Apple TV main menu.
On my Apple TV I restarted the program by going to purchased selecting the episode and pressing play. Again this is over iCloud and not Home Sharing. I had to fastforward to where I was as there was no option to "resume playback".
A couple of minutes later i turned off my Macbook and Apple TV stopped playing! I had to do the same again.
I tested this again turning macbook/itunes on and off and it did the same thing.
Why should turning iTunes on or off have an impact on what Apple TV is displaying if Apple TV is connected to iCloud rather than Home Sharing? Home Sharing on both Apple TV and MacBook is turned on.
Basically can I stop Apple Tv from quitting what i'm watching on iCloud just because my macbook is turned on?
    Any thoughts?

How is the content being selected to be played on the ATV, via the Movies or Computers option?
If the former, the computer should not need to be on to play.
If the later, the computer must be on and iTunes must be running.

  • Losing wireless passwords when macbook sleeps--how to prevent?

I typically use wireless Internet connectivity. When I put my Macbook (running X 10.5.7) in "sleep" mode or when I close the machine without shutting down, it "forgets" the password to the wireless router. When I open the machine it requires I reenter the password. When I shutdown and reboot, the wireless connectivity is fine--ie, it remembers the router password. This has happened on 3 different routers.
How do I prevent this from happening? It is obviously a nuisance.

Have you tried Keychain First Aid? Run the Keychain app and from the menu select Keychain First Aid from the Keychain Access menu option. If that does not work delete the Airport entry for the router and re-create it. Cant think of any other way to solve it.

  • Applications always close when computer sleeps

I have 2 mac minis. With my new one, all open applications close after about a half hour of non-use. I know I did something with the first one to prevent this, but I cannot remember what setting I need to change. I have tried the energy saver adjustment (increasing it to 3 hours), but the apps still close. Does the computer shut down all open apps when it logs me out? If so, can I fix this by disabling automatic log out? Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums!
Your situation is strange. I can answer one of your questions: "Does the computer shut down all open apps when it logs me out?" Yes, it does.
But I don't understand why the computer going sleep would log you out. That is not the standard behavior.
Are you by any chance using "Fast User Switching" or "Parental Controls"?

  • Firefox closes when windows sleeps.

I'm running an HP PC with Windows 7, using the most recent firefox. While this problem isn't particularly serious, it's mildly alarming.
I usually put my computer on sleep for the night (or when I am away from it.) On several mornings, including this one, I return to my computer, power it back up, and Firefox has closed. Other applications are still open.
I have seen some related issues on this forum, but not exactly this. Will look forward to responses.
    DK

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

  • Adobe X no print dialog box and program closes when printing

Have one user who started encountering this problem today:
    Opens up PDF
Clicks on the Print icon (or File - Print)
The Print Dialog box never appears
Adobe 10.1.1 program then immediately closes - nothing in the event log
Able to get the PDF to print only if right clicking on the file and selecting Print (but don't get to select any Printing options)
Have tried selecting a different printer with the same results
Have uninstalled and reinstalled the program
    Any help is appreciated

I have a similar problem with the the same printer.  Excel works fine until you ask to print preview, this takes about a minute to appear, and about another minute if you ask it to print too.  Once you've printed and are back in Excel anything you try to do now has a delay.  I've tried then changing the printer i want to use to a networked one which makes Excel return to it's normal self.
I've also tried sharing this printer to make sure it wasn't the PC but it is the same on any I've tried.

  • Lightroom CC error message - cannot open previews - program closes when hit ok

Suddenly after using Lightroom CC for several months, I cannot open it.  I get an error message saying "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from preview cache" and has to close; will fix next time.  Many times later, still cannot open it.  Anyone else with this problem or how to fix it?  Thanks.

I had exactly the same issue and fixed it almost instantly by following the suggestion to rename the previews.lrdata folder in my latest lightroom backup file. This is the same as deleting it. When you then open Lightroom, it will regenerate the missing previews quickly and you will be back in business. My problem was caused by an interruption in the backup process which corrupted the file. John W.

  • Macbook sleeping when powered on

    Hi
I have been noticing of late when my Macbook has been shutdown for a day or so, when I first power it up the sleep indicator light is lit and I have to press a button on the keyboard for it to start up. I am 100% sure the Macbook is shutdown and off before I close the lid so I am not sure why this is happening. Anyone else experienced this? This may have started occurring since installing the 10.4.7 update but may be just a coincidence.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

it's normal. mine is the same when I turn on macbook, sleep light is lit little bit. then disappeared. it's probably recognized by system everytime restart. don't worry.
