Programs closing

Hi!
Suddenly my MacBook has started acting weird. All my programs will either not start, or shuts down after short time of use. Noticed problems with Safari and LimeWire at first, but now all my programs acts this way... Something has to be very wrong...
When they shut down I get a message like: " The program has unexpectedly shut down", and three choices: "Close", "Report" or "Reopen". Don't know if this is exactly what it says, cause I run a Norwegian version of Mac OSX 10.4.8.
Hope some of you can help me... It is very annoying in general, and even more when I do studying etc... I'm in school right now, using a lot of Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and suddenly all my work gets lost...
(Sorry if my english isn't too good)

Alexander Lauritzen
13" MacBook 1,83GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Adrian!!!
Thanks for the tips, but didn't help
I called Apple today, and they told me to use Disk Utility to repair the disk... Tried to do so, but Disk Utility told me that the Macintosh HD couldn't be either repaired or verified.
I called Apple again, and they told me to reinstall OS X. I tried "Archive and install" several times (6(, and every time I got an error telling me to try again, wich I did a few times. Then i tried to format the Macintosh HD, and choose "Delete and Install", got a few errors again, but the third time it was succesfull!
I was happy and tought the problem must have been solved, since everything was reinstalled. But I still have the same problem!!! Programs won't open, or closes after short time of use...
So it has to be a hardware-problem, doesn't it???

Alexander Lauritzen

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death.  Even with all programs closed, I'm still using 5 GB of RAM, according to Activity Monitor.  Help!

Ever since installation of OSX Lion, I've been having freeze-up problems on my early 2011 MacBook Pro.  Increased the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.  Amazingly, when I have Mail and Chrome open, almost all of the RAM is consumed.  Even with all programs closed, I only have about 3 GB of free space.  Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Mail under Lion (your profile says 10.5) is always busy and doesn't like large email database I hear.
Chrome and Safari don't clear their history and cache, lack quota on how many days and disk use, so clear those out. This is where I do use CCleaner on Mac as well as Wndows.
I keep reading from 10.6 on that even closing (quit) does not release memory and threads galour that there are memory leaks that you have to repair permissions, even restart, and poor memory management for many people's systems (often laptops).
Free RAM is wasted RAM though. Even 3GB seems excessive. This is not OS 9 or 1999.
but I found that 4-core 4GB RAM was fine except for handling large photo libraries.

    Hi Bryan ,
It happens when you save it as an Adobe PDF or a normal PDF?
Happens with all the files or any specific one?
What exact version of Acrobat are you using?
Try updating it to the latest one if it is an older one.
You may also want to uninstall and re install it to check.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Upgrade to 9.3.2 results in program closing when printing pdf.  Anyone else?

Just upgraded my daughters computer (XP) to 9.3.2.  When I try and print either pdfs or web pages I get an error messaging stating that the program "must be closed".  However Word prints just fine.  Anyone else have these problems, or has anyone solved a similar situation?

    hi,
one thing you could try is to refresh the portlet reposiory: builder - administer - portlets subtab - Click 'Refresh the Portlet Repository'
If this does not help go to the pages where the error occurs - before that switch to the list view or the Layout view. Delete the portlets that are affected from the page. go to the page that you published as portlet and republish them / check if they are still published and available in the portlet repository.
Add the portlets to the original page and see if this works.

  • Programs closing unexpectedly

I recently purchased a 17'' MBP which I am happy to say is whine and heat free. This is my first Mac and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It was definatly worth the money.
There is just one problem: some programs are unexpectedly closing. AIM closes at random, and so does Corel Painter XI. Is this because they aren't universal? Everything else works fine. I searched the forum and found a similar topic but the question was left unanswered.
Thanks to anyone who can help!

I had an issue where I was sure that a 3rd party RAM module I had purchased was bad until I replaced that and the problems continued. It turns out it was the Apple installed module that was the bad one. It might still be worth running Memtest OSX http://www.memtestosx.org/ to see how they do.
You may also want to try taking out each of the RAM modules (if you have more than one) and running them independently and
running Disk Utility and verifying disk permissions,

  • Lion software - program closed but still highlighted

    MacBook Pro - OSX version 10.7.5 - 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo- 4 B 1067 MHz DDR3
Have been experiencing power related problems due to battery draining when all programs and lid is closed.  Noticing when programs are closed the icons remain highlighted with light lite as though the program was still running.  Manually opened and closed program so program appears to be closed before closing the computer lid.  Power still drains faster than normal in this state.  If not using MacBook for a day, the power is in critical level when lid is opened.

To turn off resume, go to system preferences > general > re-open windows when opening an application (or something like that). Alternately, when you quit Safari, hold down the option key (cmd - option - q).
Your Pages problem can be resolved by using the new feature called "duplicate". This is the new version of "Save As...", and it will do exactly the same.
    Best of luck.

  • Programs closing weird in 10.5.2

I'm having a weird little problem. When I close a program using the red X at top of programs, they don't actually close. You can see in the dock that program is still running and I can command-tab it but when I do, I don't get the actual program to come back. It just shows it's menu buttons at the top but the actual window doesn't show up. If I click on it at the dock, the window comes back but it shows up in it's default settings as if I just launched it. Let give you an example.
If I open firefox and browse for a bit, opening 3 or 4 tabs and then close it with the red x, the window disappears. Now, after I do that I can see the little mark in the dock below the firefox icon that the program is still running. I can also command-tab to it but when I do, the window doesn't show up, only the menu buttons at the top appear. If I click on the firefox icon in the dock, the browser shows up again but all the tabs I had open when I closed it are gone. On the other hand, if I open 3 or 4 tabs and I close it using command-q, the program shuts down correctly, completely disappears and when I relaunch it, all the tabs are still there.
So, what exactly is the point of closing a program using the red x? Am I missing something?

So the red-x closes the window while leaving the program open. That's cool. But if you have no way of re-opening that window without relaunching the application, it seems completely useless. I mean, in firefox's it closes the window, leaves the program open and when you try to relaunch it you get a blank page losing all your tabs. It's the same thing with other programs. If I load a text file in Tofu and then red-x it, no only am I not able to reopen the window without launching the program but when I do, the text file is no longer loaded. So what's the point is closing programs while leaving then open in the background in their default launch states?

  • Is there a way to force a program closed on a Mac Pro?

Is there a way to force a program to close like you can using the Task Manager in Windows?
I have Motion 5 that seems to lock up showing the spinning wheel like it thinks like it is doing something in the background.  Unfortunately, It happens when I haven't tried to do anything.  It seems to go on for ever.  The only way I've been able to get out of it if to reboot the computer but I lose all my work in doing so.

OK, you have iMovie 08, which is also known is iMovie Version 7.1.4. It has been a few years since i used this version, so this is based on memory.
The only components you must have in the Library/QuickTime folder are the AppleIntermediateCodec.component and the AppleMPEG2Codec.component.
All the others could potentially be causing problems. I would drag the DivX components, the Flip4Mac components, and the Google Camera components to the Desktop temporarily, so nothing is left in this folder except the two Apple components.
Then restart your Mac and start iMovie. If it works, yay!
If you still need these other components for some other app, you can probably get updated DivX components for free at Perian.org.
You can get updated Flip4Mac components by running WMV Player and updating. It should prompt you to update automatically.
I am not sure about the Google components, but if you are running something that needs them, it should prompt you to install the current versions.
If none of that works, post back.

  • Unexpected error, program closing

I can barely listen to a full song let alone do anything else as my itunes keeps crashing. it says itunes has stopped working and windows is checking for a solution. then says no solution the program must close.
    this happens every time
what can i do?!?! please help i want to listen to my music!!!

it says itunes has stopped working and windows is checking for a solution.
Head into your Problem Reports and Solutions control panel (or the Windows 7 equivalent) and open your problem history. Look for recent iTunes problem reports. Open them up and have a check through. Do they all seem to say the same thing? If so, paste the contents of a typical problem report into a reply here so we can have a look.

  • PrP crash report generated when program closed in normal manner

Just  today a Motocross project Ive been working on for 2 weeks is acting a bit strange. Whenever I quit the program in a normal manner, 15 seconds later I get the "Crash report generated" screen. The only thing I have done to the project recently is I went in and cleared the caches prior to switching from Preview using Prores back to MPEG I frame. I have had no problems rerendering the timeline or anything. But this error screen is kind of spooking me a bit.

Never mind. After posting this entry to the forum it stopped.

  • IPhone Programs Closing Randomly to "Home" page

    Hello,
I have had my new iPhone, for a littler over a week. It seems that the majority of my software programs close un-expectedly, when I am working in them, usually with-in a minute or less of opening the program(s).
The only one that doesn't seem to ever close is the phone portion, and the smaller programs.
If you have any ideas, on what the problem might be, please let me know.
    Thanks for your help!

You can try each of the following, in order, and see any if any of them help.
    1. Power the phone off, then back on: Turn the phone off by holding the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the slider appears, then sliding it to the right. Then press the Sleep/Wake button again to turn the phone on.
    2. Reset the phone: Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down for about 8 seconds until the Apple symbol appears.
    3. Restore the phone: Plug the iPhone into your computer and click Restore on the iTunes menu.

  • Programs closing - scratch disc issue on drive C

TB hard drive new laptop,  creative quite installed by techie on Cdrive, disc shows full. no stratch disc room left. programs shut down.  not configured properly. Need help.

System info, exact program versions, everything else. And seriously: Use proper sentences to explain your situation! It's simply not nice trying to deduct any sensible meaning from something that looks like the user has a total brain hiccup.
