Programs continue locking up & become unresponsive.

I have a 17 inch Mac Book pro with a Processor Speed of:2.16 GHz, & 2Gb of Ram. On my Activity Monitor I have the following: Reads In: 377001, Writes Out: 63041, Reades in/sec:0, Writes Out/sec:0, Data read: 5.45GB, Data Written: 1.30 Gb, Data read/sec:0 Bytes, Data written/sec:0 Bytes. Every program on my computer except for my Web Browser, falls into a stall pattern with a spinning wait cursor. The program becomes totally unresponsive and I am more than likely unable to cease the operation. Even through force quit. This has only been happening the last 2 or 3 weeks. Before that every thing worked fine on my laptop. I never had a problem. I have a 300 Gig hardrive on my computer with about 200 Gig of it free. Even if I shut down every program open on my computer I still get a spinning cursor and an unresponsive program. So I am cognizant of my virtual memory usage. Im not sure what is going on. Im wondering if I downloaded some type of executable file & it's maliciously running up my virtual memory? what can I do to check this? & or fix the problem. I also just did an Apple Software update tonight. Maybe this will help the problem.

This may not help, but I suspect that what you see under the "Disk Activity" tab won't be that helpful. You should also check the tabs for "CPU" and "System Memory". Under "CPU", when you see those stalls, what is the "% Idle" value? Under "System Memory", what is the value for "Page outs"?

  • Every time I open iPhoto (as of today) after a few seconds the coloured wheel appears and the program become unresponsive. I have tried closing my computer. I assume I have a corrupt file but at the moment I cannot access anything in the program?

Every time I try to open Iphoto '11 (as of today) the coloured wheel appears after a few seconds and the program becomes unresponsive. I assume I have a corrupt file but I cant do anything including accessing help. I have tried closing down and restarting but it dosnt help. Any ideas please?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Adobe FP 10-A Script in this movie is causing Adobe FP 10 to run slowly. If it continues to run your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort this script? yes or no. How do I fix this crash?

    Hi,
Some "movies' are actually Flash files.
This means the Flash App will play them (possibly in a browser in some cases).
Depending where this item is and how it is playing it may be effected by other things
A web page can include javascript.
Apple uses javascript here to help with creating the posting box, the Edit options, Adding pics/smilies and the like.
Sometimes the javascript can be what is called a runaway process and gets sort of stuck in an endless loop.
If it is a free standing item then it might be triggered by AppleScript on the Mac. (or be modified in some way)
Again if the Script (normally written with a upper case S) is not perfect it can cause problems.

  • Photoshop CS5 becomes unresponsive when switching programs?

Photoshop CS5 becomes unresponsive if I switch to another program (ie acrobat, word, google chrome). The menu's still work, but pan, zoom, move, etc. have no effect on the image.  I have to save and restart to make the program work correctly and it will do it again as soon as I switch to another window.  I'm not sure what this issue would be called (maybe a redraw error), but does anyone have an idea of how to fix this?

Without system information nobody can advise specifically, but sounds like graphics issues. Update your graphics driver.

Nothing YOU cand do.  You'll need to bring the phone to Apple for replacement.

  • IPhone 5 touchscreen becomes unresponsive and requires to lock/unlock after updating to iOS 8 and 8.0.3

While using the phone frequently the screen becomes unresponsive, only the home button works and I need to lock and then unlock to get it to respond again.
    I have an iPhone 5 64GB.
    it's really annoying.
I've restarted the phone a few times but the issue persists.

Thanks for the tip but the problem persists.
I restored the phone as new with iOS 8.0.2, the freeze problem appeared.
Then I restored the backup, the problem persists, but I have the impression that is a bit less frequent, I'll confirm in the following days.

  • Computer becomes unresponsive while scrolling

I have a new MacBook Pro with 8 GB RAM, and a solid-state 256 GB drive.  My software is always updated to the latest firmware, software, and OS updates (Lion).
Lately my computer has been locking up while I am running these programs simultaeneously:
    Excel
    Preview
    TextEdit
    Safari
    Finder
Typically I am scrolling in Preview, or Excel.  The program I am scrolling in freezes (spinning ball), but other programs remain responsive.  Then, after a minute or so, they also become unresponsive and I have to force a shutdown by holding the Power button down.  This is very un-Mac-like.  I am reverting to behaviors I learned many years ago using Windows, that is to say, saving my files almost every time I make a change.
I have been watching Activity monitor to discern what might be happening.  I always have plenty of System Memory available and the CPU is not heavily loaded before the event.
    Your suggestions would be appreciated.

I was able to find the definitive solution for this.  I noticed that my computer was freezing approximately hourly and began to suspect my Time Machine backup solution.  After a few more steps of ruling out one variable after another I learned that Sophos (free) anti-virus was, indeed, interacting with Time Machine and causing the problem
Sophos uses a technique called "Scan on Access" which means that no files are scanned for viruses (after the initial scan) unless they are accessed.  The problem is, when you perform a Time Machine backup many files are accessed and the machine slows to a crawl and then becomes unresponsive before you can detect it using Activity Monitor.
I like Sophos, in concept, and disabling Scan on Access solved the problem.  But, then I did not have a live anti-virus/malware detector which, regretably, is becoming more important for Macs these days.
I uninstalled Sophos and my problem is resolved.  I installed another well-known reputable anti-virus tool (that uses a different strategy than Scan on Access), and the problem did not return.
    I hope this helps.

  • After upgrading to Aperture 3.4.1 (and really since 3.4), aperture becomes unresponsive almost immediately after I open it.  It tears through over 1GB of memory within a minute, and I am forced to either force quit or open the terminal and "killall".

How do I fix this issue?  I haven't been able to use Aperture or load new photos into Aperture for weeks.  Since upgrading to Aperture 3, from Aperture 2; I've noticed that Aperture 3 is a major memory hog.  I had to upgrade my unibody macbook to keep up with Aperture, otherwise my whole system become unresponsive when trying to simply look at my photos.  I have about 15,000 pictures in my library, but the program is designed to organize large libraries.  Why has it been so buggy the past year?  Should I just jump ship and go to Lightroom?
    Thanks

    Matt,
it is normal, that after a crash a library repair is required. Aperture is a database, and if a crash happens, transactions may not be completed, so the library may be left in an inconsitent state. Usually the built-in repair methods can take care of this. But I assume, you have a backup of your Aperture library. If not, now would be the time to create one, just in case.
I doubt, Aperture is causing this crashes - it may be a coincidence; kernel panics quite often are due to an overfull hard disk, incompatible frameworks or kernel extensions, or to failing hardware. Run a hardware check, check the available disk space and file system with disk utility, and try to remember, if you installed anything else lately, that might have added incompatible kernel extensions. Turn off any helper apps, start up items.
Your kernel panic occurs when accessing the graphics card. Sometimes this can be resolved by booting into safe mode, this will disable advanced features and reset the card. Note: Aperture will not run in safe boot mode, see
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Browse MacBook forum and Mt. Lion forum, to see, if anybody else has problems with Mt. Lion and your particular Hardware configuration and card.
As a last measure reinstall your MacOS. You may also have a look at Thomas' Tech Corner » Understanding upgrade nightmares

  • Apple TV will stream music but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  During the unsuccessful connection process, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.

Apple TV 3 will stream music via Home Sharing from iTunes on Mac running 10.6.8 but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  When trying to connect, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.  ATV will stream movies purchased through the ATV but not those purchased through or ripped/copied onto the Mac.  I've tried fixes suggested for similar problems (rebooting ATV and Mac, signing out then back into iTunes Store) to no success.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is the most bogus example of Apple rip-off EVER.  They do not advertise this *feature* and yet expect people to invest in an Apple ECOSYSTEM?  My experience with Apple TV using a central media "server" (a dedicated Mac Mini) has been atrocious.  I continually get "Cannot connect..." messages and with typical Apple "it just works" mentality, there is no reason stated.  I HATE APPLE TV and I HATE APPLE.  Peddle your crapple somewhere else.

    Wacom touch pen interface
    2x Ati Radeon 6870 1gb gddr5 ( usually un-crossfired)
    premier pro 5.5.2
now, I more than meet the minimum needs for adobe premier, but sometimes, when I am using it, it grinds to a near halt and "becomes unresponsive" between simple actions. I checked online and it said to shut off the gpu setting, which I could not find on my version of adobe premier CS5.5. So, I figure my scratch disk drive is too full. so I free up 50 gig or so by uninstalling some games im not playing. I run my registry cleaner, and I still have the same problem.
Is it because I de-frag my HDD once a week ? did some of the files get shifted and this is causing major problems in performance ?
Im not sure if this is a hardware or a configuration problem.

Hello again, I can see that your Mac is running last year's 2011 generation Macbook Air, am I correct? If older, then I suppose that it is because likely of the new operating system, with new software added in, I think it is stressing the RAM a lot. Also, likely is because your using a lot of your hard drive's storage. Other than that, you can go and configure your mac or get a new one. These are suggestions I could offer, on the other hand I think you will have to stop updating your operating system. Not software updates, but operating system. Means you maybe sticking to Mountain Lion for "a while". Sorry I couldn't be much of a help. But yes, those are old specs and you may be stressing your computer hardware.
Another option is to get expensive accessories like an external hard drive and buying more RAM. Your graphics card should be fine since your using an Air likely just for work and internet browsing.

  • The NYT website won't stop loading whenever it does an auto-update. While this loading continues, other websites are unresponsive until I force the loading to terminate. This started happening with FF 4.0.1.

When I do a manual refresh on certain sites like NY Times or CNN, or when sites like NYT periodically push an update through, the updates won't stop loading. It's as though the update never completes. The rotating circle icon on the affected tab just continues indefinitely. While this is happening, other websites that I try to open or update are either very slow or unresponsive.
My fix has been to force the update to terminate by using the red X button next to the website name. Then other websites respond normally but often the one that I have manually stopped becomes unresponsive.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)
