Programs don't respond with ipod plugged in

This is really a pain. Whenever I plug my 30gb 5G ipod into my computer my programs don't respond. This makes it impossible to put songs onto my ipod. I have tried reinstalling itunes and the ipod updater and restoring my ipod, but it only makes it so that itunes doesn't read my ipod. please help.
30 gb. 5th G   Windows XP

I don't know if this will fix the problem, but here it is:
1. start the macbook up normally w/o the iPod plugged in.
2. right after u hit the power button hold down the button combination "s" and "command"
3. do not let go until the screen goes black and white text is on it. when the text stops moving there will be a prompt.
4. type the following text WITHOUT QUOTES "fsck -f"
5. then when it is done do that same thing again.
6. then try to exit type the following text WITHOUT QUOTES "reboot"
7. then try to reboot with the iPod connected
if that does not work take it into a apple store.

First, know that if you have any old PPC-only applications they will no longer work. You should uninstall them completely. Secondly, applications that don't work may require upgrades for compatibility with Mountain Lion. Thirdly, you may have a dysfunctional upgrade for which you should try this:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Restart of computer with iPod plugged in issue

    Hi,
Whenever I restart my Windows Vista computer with my iPod Classic plugged in via USB, the computer freezes and is unable to get past the DELL logo screen. Is there a known issue with this? When I have my USB flash drives plugged in, there is no problem with restarts.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    James

the ipod is like a mini computer ... you should disconnected first before you restart ... also, restaring with ipod connected might get damaged cos of power changing up and down, so you're risking to damage the ipod. good luck.

  • Problems restarting iMac with iPod plugged in after last software update

    Hi everyone,
I have an almost 2 year old 24" iMac Intel, running OS X 10.4.11 and a 30gb iPod video.
I've been having problems with restarting after the last software update. When I went to restart my computer as required for the update, it shut down, started up (the start up sound came on) and then went to just a blue screen for about 10 minutes or more. I got worried and shut down by holding the power button. Then I turned it back on and the same thing happened. So I shut down with the power button again, unplugged my iPod and external HD, turned the computer back on, and everything started up as normal. So I figured it had to do with one of those. I found that when I've started up with the external HD plugged in everything is fine, but every time I restart with my iPod plugged in, the same thing happens!
This has never happened before, and I've never had problems with my iMac before this... Can anyone help?
    Thank you!

Hi, try-> System Preferences->Start Up Disk->ensure OS is highlited.
Some Macs find it difficult to Start/ReBoot when an iPhone or iPod is connected, it's as though the computer is searching to boot from an external HD. I would Repair Permissions & do the SMC reset.
    Leave the iPod/iPhone unplugged @ reboot...L

  • Windows will not open with iPod plugged in!

Well, I thought Joey got me through this problem about a week and a half ago, but it only worked once and has been back to being a pain.
If I leave the iPod Nano 2G, plugged in when I shut off my computer, (XP SP2), then go to turn it on the next morning, it grabs the iPod immediately and my computer locks on the black screen that checks the system. I have to turn the power off disconnect the iPod and then the computer fires right up when I start up again.
I had 6.? with the Nano, updated twice already to 7.?. Had the problem with all those, but it has to be something before that because it never gets to boot up Windows.
I have played around in BIOS changing boot sequenses, but have been unsucessful in getting it to start up while plugged in to USB port. I have changed the iPod options as a disk and managing my music, but to no avail!
What's the sense in having a dock for your iPod when it's in & out, in & out???
    Anyone??
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave
    iPod Nano 2G   Windows XP

No I have not, but this was just brought up to me this past weekend, as a possible solution by a local IT guy.
I'm trying to sift through all the documentation from when I purchased my computer system, to find out what kind of motherboard is in the tower and then go to a site for a BIOS update.
Unfortunately the manufacturer of my system is defunct. Shame, because I have had no problems with this system since I bought it over 2 years ago.
    Thanks!

  • Mac OS X doesn't boot with iPod plugged in

    Hi there,
i have a little problem with my ipod shuffle. When start my iMac and my iPod is plugged in, then is doesn't start or extremley slow. As soon as i plug it out, it starts immeditely or continues. Is there something i can do? or is it just again an issue or bug from apple?

Yes... disconnect the Shuffle before booting. Your iMac is looking for a bootable system on the Shuffle (really...). It's neither an issue nor a bug, it's the way YOUR iMac works.

  • Imac won't boot with Ipod plugged in.

    60gb 5G Ipod. Imac Intel Core2 duo 2.0 ghz.
About 80% of the time, if the Ipod is plugged in (through a USB hub), the Mac will only boot to a grey screen. As soon as I unplug the Ipod, the Apple appears on the Imac screen. My Iphone is plugged into the same USB hub at the time, with no similar behavior. I've tried restoring the Ipod with no change.
I've tried making sure that the startup disk pref pane is set correctly and locked, but for some reason, whenever I check it, its unlocked again. The Ipod does not appear there. I do have a clone of the startup disk attached to an always on external firewire drive.

    Hello Mark
Having the iPod connected during the boot process is confusing the startup manager!
First try: *System Preferences / Startup Disk* and select the *Mac OS X, 10.5.4 on Macintosh HD* then *Click the lock to prevent further changes.*
You can also try ejecting the iPod be for shutting down or only sleeping the iMac when the iPod is charging!
Normally my iMac sleeps, but as a habit I always eject and disconnect all USB storage devices, iPods, cameras, flash drives, etc. be-for shutting down.

  • IMac won't start up with iPod plugged in?

Just bought a new imac, and it's working perfectly. It reads my iPod with no problems, but i've noticed that when I turn my iMac on sometimes, it won't start up. Just kinda stays at the beginning white screen.
It only does it when my iPod is plugged in, however. ( 60GB iPod video ) Anyone think there might be a reason? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me with this, it's somewhat bothersome to have to make sure to eject my iPod before restarting.
    Thanks

Thank you for your support and time, but im afraid my problem still persists. A friend suggested I check what other files I had on the iPod, but none of them seem like they would interfere with the startup.
If anyone else has any suggestions, i'd be happy to try them. Thanks for your time.

  • Computer freezes with iPod plugged in, songs show exclamation marks, etc...

    HELP!!!
I've restored, re-loaded, re-installed, updated, etc. but nothing helps.
I plug in my 40gig iPod, iTunes finds it and starts uploading all my songs. Then, after a random period of time, the entire computer locks up. Mouse doesn't move, nothing. The only way to make the computer come back to life is to unplug the iPod.
For the indeterminate period of time that the iPod is plugged in and updating, when I check the list of songs already on the iPod, several of the tracks have exclamation marks in a dark circle next to them. These tracks work fine when played through iTunes, but not through the iPod.
I've run 'Chkdsk f: /F' several times, and it finds plenty of problems and errors.
It takes me over a month to reload all the songs onto my my iPod because it can't upload more than 500meg without freezing the computer up.
    PLEASE HELP!

Having the same problem and judging by the other posts i've read so are alot of other ipod classic users. When I sync my ipod it gets up to about a 1000 songs then starts going really slow and i cannot eject so when i unplug it all the songs are gone and i need to restore ipod again.
I'm getting fed up with this problem i've rebooted my ipod over 20 times trying to fix this problem and i want to know what apple are going to do about it because so far it appears that they are sticking their hands in the sand and ignoring the problem.

  • Free books don't sync with iPod

Why won't free books sync with my iPod?  I don't have any issue with paid books. Any ideas why this is happening?
    Thanks for the help.

When the Sync finishes, do you see a message telling you that "some videos" have not been transferred to your iPod because they cannot be played on this iPod? If so, then those videos are not in a format that the iPod can recognise.
One reason (but not the only one) is if they are HD videos, which iPods cannot play. In this case, look for the non-HD version of the Podcast if there is one and download that instead.
If HD is not the problem, perhaps they are in one of the MP4 format variations that do not play on the iPod. Below is the spec for videos that iPod Classic can handle, as quoted on the Classic Technical Specs pages:
    Video
    * H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
    H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
So if the videos are not in one of theose formats, they will not play and therefore not be transferred to the iPod.
You could try selecting the video in your iTunes library and clicking on *Advanced/Create iPod or iPhone version* but each conversion take a long time and it isn't always successful.
    Good luck,
    Phil

  • New imac programs don't respond

on my brand new iMac, were talking last wednesday here, loads of programs just lock upo on doing the simplest of tasks...
Pages locked up numerous times in a row trying to save a simple document, so did text edit. restarting fixed that but now chrono sync just locked up. There were others today and in the past 3 days as well.
What could be causing it and how can I fix it?
Occasionally they free again but more often than not I have to force quit, sometimes even restart..
Please help as I love this machine and just want it to work!!
    Regards

    Hello,
    As far as applications quitting:
    If an application quits unexpectedly
    Try the following troubleshooting tips:
Reopen the application by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears when the application quits.
If the application quits again after you click Reopen, click Try Again in the dialog that appears. If there is a problem with the application’s preferences, clicking Try Again temporarily changes the preferences to the default settings.
Restart your computer by choosing Apple menu > Restart.
Uninstall any plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers for the application. When you update an application or Mac OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you previously installed may no longer be compatible.
Read the application’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to check if it’s compatible with your version of Mac OS X.
Open another document in the application. There may be a problem with the document you were trying to open.
Use Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder or on your Mac OS X Install DVD) to repair the disk.
Update your software by choosing Apple menu > Software Update. Updates often correct issues found in previous versions. For applications not made by Apple, look for updates on the manufacturer’s website.
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of Mac OS X. If disconnecting the device solves your problem, contact its manufacturer.
Use Apple Hardware Test. (If your computer came with an Applications Install DVD, Apple Hardware Test is on that disc; otherwise, it’s on the Mac OS X Install DVD.) Insert the disc, and then restart your computer while pressing the D key.
If you just installed hardware, such as additional memory, Apple Hardware Test can tell you if it’s defective. If you can’t find Apple Hardware Test, take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Chrono sync is a 3rd party application. You need to refer to their support page here:
    http://www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/Support/support_faq.html
Get Onyx for Leopard. Run the maintenance and cleaning scripts once a week:

Here is the link to the Intel iMac Forum... good place to check out issues and fixes!

  • Wish List tunes don't sync with iPod

Once upon a time, I could drag a song from the iTunes store into a playlist I called "wish list". That was per Apple suggestion. It copied the 30 second bit that you hear in the store. That was useful, both for getting other's opinions as well as for shopping.
Lately, that folder doesn't transfer to the iPod. I renamed it to something else, and it still didn't sync with the iPod. Has there been a change of heart at Apple or something?

Thanks for the suggestion. It didn't work, but it did show me what's going on. iTunes used to download and save the preview of the music. Now it doesn't. You MUST be connected to hear it. That means that the "wish list" playlist has no music, just titles, and doesn't sync.

  • Headphones don't work with iPod Shuffle

I was using my iPod Shuffle today, and I realized that the sound was not playing L+R sides, but the Right side only worked. I tried using my headphones with my walkman, and they worked perfectly, so now I wonder if anyone else has experienced this, and does it need to be serviced?
if so, does anyone know if this is covered in the 1 yr warranty? if not covered, how much would it cost me to get it serviced? Thanks

You didn't say that you've tried using another sst of headphones with the Shuffle... IF they too lack left channel that would be supporting the conclusion you've already come to.
Return to Apple or an Apple Store for replacement.

  • My ipod touch is not responding when i plugged it  in even with a different cord and restarting my computer

my ipod touch is not responding when i plugged it  in even with a different cord and restarting my computer and i am using my moms itunes that she has had for a long time and so i cant uninstall itunes.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
