Programs failing to quit & system to shut down
My Mac has been slowing down, with programs (especially Photoshop, Firefox) failing to close down and sometimes the system fails to shut down, I just get coloured spinning wheel forever. Also Time Machine fails to find the backup disk even though it is on the desktop. After failing to shut down the computer takes an age to start up and I have to turn the backup disk off and on as the icon has disappeared.
I noticed high cpu usage from mds and mdworker so I've reindexed Spotlight via Terminal and waiting to see if this helps. I also ran Etrecheck and there seems to be stuff there that needs sorting, hoping someone can help me interpret it.

Nothing is working. I was trying to set up boot camp and for some reason the computer died midway through a partition, now everything is dead. I can open system pref but nothing in the pref menu opens, it'll just freeze. I click on reboot, shut down... nothing happens... I try opening Disk Utilities and it freezes on me... Someone please help me.
Boot with the install disk, select your language, and then run Disk Utility, repairing the disk and permissions, from the Utilities menu.

ICM7.5 - System is shutting down with a error message
Hi,
I have installed a ICM7.5 SPRAWLER in our Lab.All was working fine until yesterday, when I suddenly started receiving the below error
This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off.
Any unsaved changes will be lost.
This shutdown was initiated by LOGGERA-9a48f5 services..
Cisco systems. Inc, ICM Node Manager Manager shuting down system. To Cancel shutdown, run the stopshut utility
and the system shutsdown. I have not done any changes to the system.
Do you have any ideas what kind of an error is this and how to resolve this?
Please advise.
Thanks,
SrinivasYou need to check the log files - the .ems files - in the logger directory (maybe la\logfiles). You must use dumplog to examine these.
First look at the nm (Node Manager) log file to see why it is having trouble and which of the processes has errors and cannot be restarted. Then check the offending process. Maybe increase the trace to see your problem.
Maybe the configlogger cannot talk to SQL or something. I think you will see what the problem is quite easily. Maybe you will know how to fix it, but if not, come back here with some trace and ask again.

My Safari browser is stuck on a webpage "survey.tubgalley.xyz...." and there is a pop up with "Congratulations, you are today's lucky winner, Click OK to continue". ( I have not of course clicked on it!).
I have tried quitting Safari, and shutting down my computer.
I have block pop ups enabled in preferences.
I have Mac OS X 10.7.5
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware. -

When the system goes into sleep mode it keeps making a beeping noise. The system is shut down by holding the button in
and will then boot up again without any errors.
I Have replace RAMS, Motherboard and Power Supply. I have check the Bio's and Power setting on the unit. there is no place to cause this issue.
Please help
PC Power TechSyamak,
You didn’t specify where the beeping noise is coming from.
If it’s coming through your speakers, you could try to update your audio drivers since it’s possible they’re incorrectly sending a signal to the speakers as the audio chipset enters standby.
If the noise is coming from the motherboard, you’ll need to take a closer look at your system’s configuration or contact the manufacturer.
I hope this helps.

Help, I can not quit safari or shut down my computer since updating to Lion.
Can some one help?
Since updating to Lion, I can not quit Safari or shut down my computer.Several ways to force quit when you can't quit an app normally.
Go to your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then from the drop down menu select Force Quit.
You can also force quit an app using the Activity Monitor app located in /Applications/Utilities.
You should be able to shut down your Mac by holiding down the power button until the screen goes black. Then restart as usual. -

System Sudden Shut Down Problem
Hi there - not sure how to trouble shoot this so I thought I'd start here:
My system runs for a while and then will suddenly shut down by itself with no warning.... I cannot restart by pushing the power button unless I wait awhile. (few mins) Very strange, upon boot up the system does NOT go through a disk check or anything, boots up normally.
Somethings that seem to trigger the shutdown, use of websites with heavy flash components.. Mostly kids sites like disney etc...
I use Mozilla and the flash player is the latest greatest...
I know this is very vague but thought I'd throw it out to see where folks think I should start.
My 1st guess was an overheating prob.. I have a rear 80mm case fan the CPU fan and the power supply fan going full tilt... No excessive dust issues clogging fins etc...
Any thoughts much appreciated!Hi!Just a thought..
Supposly you have an msi main board you should have the "core center" utility which shows cpu/system/nb temp's. Additionaly you can adjust the fan speed with it.
Another point is that in the past sometimes my pc used to restart without a reason. A hardware explanation is that cpu is overheated or something else went wrong. But i realized that it happend because of software..And usually when trying to run specific programs.Maybe it was drivers, maybe something unwanted installed from "bad sites", anyway try to use system restore some days before the 17th of this month just to be sure.I mean you have a quite new psu and if something was going wrong with the heatsink of cpu it would have restarted earlier during boot.
Anyway the post is 3 days long and maybe you've already managed to solve your prob. -
Operating System not shutting down
So for some reason unknown to me my Macbook Pro will not shut down, it will look like it's going to shut down and then a message will come up saying that a certain program, it changes with whatever one i have open, and will say that the finder did not quit properly if i closed everything prior to shut down. I have the console log here saying what the problem is, but its in computer lingo and i need a translator:
Oct 4 22:57:22 evan-wimberlys-macbook-pro loginwindow[25]: ERROR | WSActivateApp | SetFrontProcess({0, 1810874}) returned error -600. Unable to activate process.
Oct 4 22:57:22 evan-wimberlys-macbook-pro login[15592]: USER_PROCESS: 15592 ttys000
any help would be awesome thanksThis happened twice again since "resolving the issue" and each time I unplugged everything from the back and held the power button down for 2 minutes. 1 incident was after shutdown from Win 8 RTM (installed on a separate SSD using different boot order in BIOS) and the other incident was shutdown from Win 7. Each time I was back up and running. If that is required because of too much static build up then something isn't grounded properly inside that case, I would think.
I called HP tech support and they said to disconnect my USB printer because it draws too much power. Say what? The printer has its own power supply. Oy vey! -
Hot CPU: system automatically shuts down
Hi guys,
while running Archlinux and extensively using system (compiling, watching HD flash videos, etc), the temperature of the CPU get's pretty hot. For example I'm currently complying amarok 2.0 and this is my CPU temperature:
[root@gamma ~]# cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ00/temperature
temperature: 103 C
The problem is that after some time at 100% CPU, it get so hot that the computer automatically blocks and shut down.. then I have to way 10-15 minutes to be able to boot again.
As I never had this problem under Windows XP I suspect this could be a linux only problem or me having some incorrect configuration somewhere.
Moreover I guess that the system should be smart enough to understand that it is getting too hot and that it should scale down the CPU power to lower the temperature. Isn't it?
I have speedstep (cpufreq) installed:
[root@gamma ~]# cpufreq-info
cpufrequtils 005: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006

Fabio Varesanofax8 wrote:@xaiviax: so you are also experiencing my problem? Did you find a solution? Any suggestion?
Umm... yeah... kind of...
A while back, I was using openSUSE on my notebook, and it would occasionally just turn off with no errors. After a lot of googling and such, I realized it was overheating and that this was a somewhat common issue with a lot of toshiba notebooks (and other brands). I never noticed it with XP before, and the problem seems to be exasperated with linux. I continued researching and did my own unscientific trial and error studies, and concluded that XP overheats less due mainly to the fact that high cpu intensive applications run less efficiently on XP most of the time, and thus don't heat up the CPU as much. However, XP still does a better job than linux of slowing everything down to a crawl when it needs to (critical temperature time). So I began researching how to get linux to slow down the cpu when it starts getting too hot. (and turn it back up when it cools down) And to this day, this is the one and only thing that disappoints me tremendously about linux. I have yet to find an automatic solution. The cpufreq stuff needs root privileges and I have failed at finding/making scripts or "chowning" acpi stuff, or other inelegant solutions. (and searched through every distro and DE's forums.)
So, what I currently do is: I have a temp monitor running all the time. If I'm running video editing software, or long compiling, or multiple virtual environments, or whatever, and I see the temp is going to get too hot, I just have to run as root: cpufreq-set -u 1.67ghz and then cpufreq-set -u 2ghz when the cpu intensive app is done.
Hopefully this helps, and if you or anyone else can shed more light on a better solution, I would be grateful. -
I tried to overclock using the FSB I got to 1.97 then I it would not boot I had to clear the cmos. After I set everything in the bios to defaults no overclockng everything at stock setting. Now when I shut down the computer it turns on again Whats making it turn back on?
I've got a different bios on mine (7030), but I've been there and done that. When bios resets in theory it defaults everything. You need to go through your bios line by line and check every setting. In my case it was a power management setting that did it. I corrected the setting and all was fixed. Assuming that you didn't blow anything up, the answer lies in your bios settings somewhere you just have to check every single setting. Failing that, you may have corrupted your Windows system. A failed overclock can corrupt the operating system. I've also been through that fun a few times. I learned some time ago to use Norton Ghost and that has saved me many a reformat. When you are going for serious overclocks Ghost can be your best friend.

Mail Prevents System From Shutting Down
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, and I just started having a problem I used to have on my old machine. When I go to shut the system down, the thing hangs until it finally lets me know that it has not shut down because "Mail" has not shut down. I have tried to speed the process of shut down by doing a force quit. Sometimes this works, but sometimes it does not.
Any ideas?then is best to try in a test user first, so create a test account and then configure an imap account and test if it works here
if it does, the problem lies in the mail folder in your user. So make back up of your mailboxes and move the mail folder
