Programs on startup??

First, I am running 10.5.8 (Snow Leopard is in the mail!!) on an almost brand new Mac Mini.
Ok so i have this driver/program for a printer that starts on startup, and I would like it to not start on startup. I have tried to find the file/folder to delete, with no results. It is also not in System Preferences > Accounts > Login. Can anyone help?? Thanks in advance.

Drivers or extensions are installed in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. However a program configured to begin at startup could be in:
/Library/StartupItems/
/Library/LaunchAgents/
/Library/LaunchDaemons/
/Home/Library/LaunchAgents/
Or it could be located in the /Library/Printers/ folder. Unfortunately you've provided insufficient information to be more helpful. Perhaps you should simply ask the tech support of the manufacturer of your printer or delete the printer altogether.

  • Running a Java program at startup in Linux

    Hello
How do I run a Java program at startup in Linux? I know in Windows I can put a .bat file in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\ directory, but in Linux I have no idea how it is done.
    Thank you,
    Mihai

This is really a Linux question, not Java.
And then it depends on the version of Linux you are using.
Maybe this will help, otherwise you should try on a forum for your version of Linux.

  • Load Java Program AT STartup

Hi I need to want to load a java program on startup and I don't know how. Is it possible to have a script that tells the operating system to load it on startup or can it only be done through the operating system's settings?

On Windows you put a batch file in your startup that contains: javaw <myapp name> or edit your registry settings to achive the same result. On Linux and Unix derivatives there are also startup files you can edit and put entries in to achive that result.

  • How do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

how do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

    It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
You can turn off Resume globally by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting that folder.
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
To turn off autosave and versions globally
If you're experiencing slow opening apps or windows since upgrading to ML... as I have... and you don't want your OS to automatically save your TextEdit files, etc. then simply disable Autosave and Versions via Terminal.
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
    Press return
    Now reboot.
    The reverse would be "yes".

  • Launch and hide invisible program at startup

    Hi,
I have been looking round various forums but cant find an answer. Hopefully someone can help.
    Problem:
We have 20 computers that all need to run a program at login (Its a 3d render client). We need the program not to appear in the dock so I have edited the .plist file in the package contents thus making the program run without a dock or taskbar. However, the actual program window remains, allowing users to close the program.
    What I need:
To open the program on startup, be invisible and hide itself.
I have tried a few scripts that launch it on startup. This works, but the next line doenst work to hide the program. I believe this is because the program is invisible (making it a background task) the finder command to hide or minimise has no effect.
I have also tried the simple procedure of adding it to startup items and checking "hide".
Any help would be most appreciated.

Its a client piece of software that allows 3d images from maxons cinema 4d to be rendered across a network. Under normal circumstances there would be no need to have this program running in the background or for it to be invisible to the dock. However. As everyone logs on in the morning this software starts on their machine. Their first instinct is to close it, which means that if I was to submit a job to the network it would not distribute it to the machines whose window has been closed. I want the software to start but be hidden so it cant be closed.
The only window that opens is a type of status/console window. So it would say what jobs are currently rendering or which have finished etc.

  • Can't figure out how to stop my MBP from opening programs at startup, namely word and messages

Recenty my MBPro has started opening MS Word and Messages at startup and I can't figure out how to stop it?  I've tried selecting and de-selcting the startup option from the dock but this doesn't help.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

System Preferences has a setting for this.
In the Users & Groups section you will fine a "Login Items" header.  This is a list of all the programs that will open automatically when you log in.  You can select any program and click the [--] button below that window to stop the program from opening automatically.

Help, I want to be able to choose which programs I wan tot run at start up because after 6 months of usage it takes about 2plus minutes for a cold system to start up and 5 seconds to shut down. I wan tot speed up the startup and I think I have to many programs runnning at startup. On my PC I used to control that from sys config,is there an equivalent in Lion.

  • Auto-load program at startup query

    Hi all.
I have the app, Sparrow, which is downloaded from the app store, installed on my Mac. I have it in my startup programs so it loads automatically. However, it is a little annoying when the window automatically opens also.
So, I'd like to know if it is possible to auto-load the app without also opening the window, so it's just open in the background?
    Thanks for all the help.

Can you tick the box to hide it in this preference pane?

  • Aol tool bar has taken over program at startup

I read the other thread on this, and no help. When I open FFX 18 a popup appears prompting me to change my homepage to AOL and use AOL security page program. I did not solicit this add-on. Things I have tried: I can not use restart FFX because I can not use any of the functions of the browser with out accepting the pop up offer. Used task manager to shut down, but program restarts with same pop up. NO AOL program shows in programs list under contol panel to unistall. Have already unistalled and reinstalled FFX and pop up cam right back. HELP mozilla is my favorite browser, but I can't use.
    Windows 7/pro hp p dv6

As I mentioned I have already viewed those threads. They do not help. When the pop up appears, no other function of the program is usable, including closing the program, or the program start menu. thus restart firefox, troubleshooting, etc. can not be used. The program can only be closed from the task manager at this point. There is no cancel or option out in the pop up window. unistalling and reinstalling FFX did not solve the problem. FFX starts with the AOL tool bar already intalled and the pop up asking to set AOL/AOL hompage security as the default home page. There are NO request from OS for permission from a program to change computer. I am not going to click on this box. I don't think it even has anything to do with AOL. This problems is not affecting versions of FFX on other computers. I have norton internet security and a macaffee security programs running. A full system scan has not turned up any problems. FFX is currently unistalled from my computer. A recent HP bios update and Java update have been installed? I have not resorted to a system restore yet. Am also working with norton to find problem, as well as here. Others have this problem... any help appreciated.

  • How can i take a program off startup?

every time i startup and log in, microsoft word opens automatically. where do i control what opens at startup?
    kenton

    Hi, K. & H.E.
System Preferences > Accounts > click lock, authenticate > your_account > Login Items tab. Select MS Word in the list of Login Items, click [-] to remove it.
Note that if a Word document, instead of Word itself, was specified as a Login Item, this would also cause Word to launch when you log in.
See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Opening items automatically when you log" for additional details.
    Good luck!

  • Disable programs at startup on nb200

I recently reformatted a nb200 that was given to me. With the computer in factory state and all the bloatware removed, it is still really really slow. I check the task manager and 3/4 of the ram is taken up when the computer is idle, and when I'm using it for simple tasks the cpu usage is never below 80%. Most of the usage is taken up by toshiba processes. Are most of these disableable? I'm pretty sure they're only there for protection but not required. Which ones can I disable at start-up?
    These are all the programs:
    TOSHIBA Sleep
    Toshiba HDD Protection
    Toshibal Power Saver
    toshiba Btuton Support
    toshiba zooming Utility
    Toshiba Flash Cards
    Toshiba eco Utility
    Toshiba PC Health Monitor
    SmartFaceVWatcher
    Toshiba Volume Regulator
    toshiba HDD SSD Alert
    Messge Center
    Toshiba ReelTime
    KeNotify Application
    SVPWUTIL Application
    Toshiba Service Station
    Toshiba Web Camera Application
    HWSetup

You may disable all of it if you want to, just leave the Alps Pointing Device enabled so your touchpad will still work and your Antivirus too.
Don't worry, your netbook will still connect to the internet because the OS is the one managing the services of it.

  • Why does my PhotoShop Elements Program always startup with two windows?

A few months ago I evidently modified something in PSE such that now, everytime I start the PSE
program I get two identical programs going. One program loads, and then immediately another idnetical
    program loads.
Any ideas as to what I did wrong???
Better yet, how do I fix it???

Only when printing?  Can you print from other applications without problems?
Either way, it is probably a print driver or operating system issue.

  • Erasing files... starting up program programs on startup, stuff

Hi y`all, i have a few questions about lingo scripts, are
there anyway to erase files from a hd, and how can i startup the
exefile when windows starts? can i be done?
    thx/me

Sure, if you are running from a projector, then you can use
    BuddyAPI or
fileXtra4 to delete any file on the user's hard drive.
If you put an alias to the projector in the startup items
    folder, then
the projector will run at startup. You can use BuddyAPI to
    place that
    alias for you.

  • Launch programs at startup without showing its windows? [SOLVED]

I want to launch at startup yakuake and korganizer daemon but I would like they don't show its windows. I know it can be done because before I loss my .kde4 folder I had that way, but I cannot remember/find how do it.
    Thank you!

Thank you for answer so quick
I found the solution by myself: just remove the "%u" of the yakuake command entry and uncheck korganizer from autostart applications in preferences

  • Running program at startup [as ordinary user]

    Hi,
I want to be able to run a command at system startup as an ordinary, non-priveledged user. In FreeBSD (where I came from before coming to Arch), there is a @reboot directive in crontab, allowing me to set up command in my crontab file to be run at startup, just as any other cronjob (only at startup instead of at a specific time).
The cron that comes with Arch doesn't seem to support the @reboot directive. Is there another simple mechanisms available for ordnary users?

There's a few things you could do. I run all my startup apps in my xinitrc and the like, so I don't need functionality like this.
Possibility 1: Create a "framework" for this. In /etc/rc.local, add something like:
    cd /home
    for user in *; do
    if [ -x "/home/$user/.rc.local" ]; then
    su $user -c "/home/$user/.rc.local"
    fi
    done
Alternatively do the same thing for rc.shutdown.local
Possibility 2: Use a different cron. I think we have 3 floating around somewhere. If not feel free to package one that works to your liking and stick it in the AUR
Possibility 3: Create an /etc/rc.d/ script that drops privileges to your user and runs all the apps you need
    ... there's lots more I'm sure ...
