Programs quit unexpectedly
Im having a major problem with all of my programs. i'll start them up and 10-60 seconds later they'll quit. i have a power mac g3 blue and white with 352 megs of ram and im running os x 10.3.9. any clues or suggestions?
Try to allow more memory to your applications. I'm not sure how to do this on a newer operating system though. If this doesn't help; definitely try to repair the permissions. There may be a problem on your hard drive with the system preferences. Finally make a new user account and log in as that person. If things work more smoothly, then there is a problem with your particular user account. If so, try to reinstall the software. Hope this helps. -Trevor129

Constant "Program quit unexpectedly" after recent update.
After my most recent system update was performed I have run into several instances of programs quitting unexpectedly. Ranging from Google Notifier (When you have new mail in gmail), Reporting system errors, trying to download .dmg files, and trying to run the software updater again, they all "end unexpectedly" and when I try to report the error, the program wont respond.
Any ideas as towards a solution?
Thanks!I first want to thank your for taking the time to go through this with tech support. It saved me and anyone else with same problem a great deal of frustration. I have to admit, I'm surprised the solution is to reinstall Leopard. I've been using a mac for over 15 years and I've never had to reinstall the OS. I'll do it, but if anyone can supply any information as to why this problem occured in the first place, I'd appreciate it.

All programs quit unexpectedly. Please HELP!
My iBook is nearly 3 years old now, but I've been having this problem since 2 months after my purchase date and it has slowly gotten worse over the years. It didn't really bother me until this last year when my work load increased and the crashing became more and more frequent (because I am working more?).
All programs quit unexpectedly--MS Word, Safari, Explorer, Firefox, AIM, iPhoto, Adobe Reader, etc--a lot! It doesn't seem to matter if I have 1 thing running or 5 or 10. For example, I will have one fairly sizeable word doc open and be cutting and pasting a small (10 words) amount of text and it will quit. Or I will go to save it (which I am now obsessed with doing every 5 minutes) and it will quit.
I have taken my computer in about 5 times in the last 9 months to have this issue resolved, but to no avail. They say, "Seems like a software problem" and come up with nothing. They've run the hardware tests and find nothing. They've checked for viruses, corrupted files, etc and always find nothing. They can't replicate the problem even though it happens to me at least twice in an 8 hour day. They've erinstalled OSX and that didn't help either. I feel like I am going crazy--especially in light of the amount of Word data I have lost in the last year.
Among other issues I've had--the motherboard (it was "fried" meaning the computer wouldn't even turn on) was replaced last March and the hard drive (it would make a weird grinding noise and then the programs would close) was replaced in November. I was hoping these replacements would solve my problems, but they clearly haven't.
Are there Lemon Laws for computers? What can I do?! I don't have the money for a new computer
Other potentially useful info:
I had them upgrade the RAM to 512 when I bought it
I have a 30GB of which about 8GB are free
They tell me the RAM tests fine
My warranty runs out at the end of February :/
I am so sick of visiting the Mac "Geniuses" that I now go out of my way to an authorized dealer instead because they don't treat me like I am totally insane. PLEASE HELP!
iBook G4Sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your iBook.
I would inspect the RAM chips in your computer. You could have gotten a foul RAM chip or installed the wrong type of RAM (even though it may fit in the slot, it may not be the one specified for your model of iBook).
I would also try reinstalling OS X again, completely wiping the drive clean before you do so.
If that doesn't work, you could try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM (look in the knowledge base for documents on how to do this; it is an easy search).
If you are still having trouble, get on the phone with Apple and try to arrange a hardware repair and/or replacement.
The best of luck to you and your problem. I hope that your issue is resolved in the near future.

On New iMac 10.8, CS4 Program quit unexpectedly when trying to print
I can't print since I have reinstall CS4 on my new iMac with english system 10.8. Program quit unexpectedly when I want to print. Is there a solution?
You might have been able to just reapply the OS 10.4.10 COMBO update for PPC or the OS 10.4.10 COMBO update for Intel without having to have gone through the motions of an archive and reinstall, with subsequent combo update.

Mac programs "quit unexpectedly"
Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Air I can no longer log into Safari, Mail, Apple Store, Notes, or update anything anymore.I always get whatever program "quit unexpectedly." It only seems to effect Mac programs. I have to use FireFox to get on line now (no issues).
Any thoughts? I'm currently running OS X 10.9 on a 2GHz i7 with 8 GB ram.Hello, not your fault, but when you use Paste instead of Paste & Match style, this forum makes it really hard to read the log.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward. -
Audio skipping and programs quitting unexpectedly, please help
Hi all, I have a Power PC G5 running on OSX 10.3.9. I came into my room this morning to my fan running at an absurd speed and the computer was frozen. I restarted the computer, but the rest of the day, my audio has been skipping constantly (on itunes and also when played through Firefox) regardless of how many programs I have open. I have never had any issues with this before. I'm also having problems with programs freezing today and with programs quitting unexpectedly.
What caused my fan to go nuts? The tower is sitting in a pretty dusty area, so it is possible that there is dust around the tower. I have no experience opening or cleaning a computer, so if that is what I should do, could you please instruct me on the best way to do that.
I have about 40gb free with 110gb utilized on my Macintosh HD. The activity monitor shows that I only have 130mb Free of system memory (when I'm only running itunes, activity monitor, and firefox). The activity monitor also jumps from having abou 85% of the CPU idle when it is working fine down to below %40 percent when the audio is skipping. What is causing these jumps?
Thank you for your help.
MaxLet's start with the basics.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

1st attempt to open an application after the computer has been shut down a message says(as an example)" the application PowerPoint quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click reopen to see more details or send a report to Apple." Next attempt it says "The application PowerPoint quit unexpectedly after it was reopened. Mac Os X and other applications are not affected. Click Try Again to temporarily restore the application's default settings and open it again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." When I click "Try Again" the app opens normally and usually runs ok sometimes it will quit unexpectedly but when reopening at that point it opens ok. Never had this issue until about 2 weeks ago. *** When I close the program myself I get a message that says "PowerPoint-New Settings
New settings have been created for this application. Do you want to use these settings from now on? Then there are 2 buttons below the dialogue box that say "Use new settings and Use original settings" This happens every time I try to open Power Point, Excel, Safari, Entourage the first time each new day. If I have been running any of those programs and have not shut down the laptop then the program will reopen normally but may shut down unexpectedly on its own and sometimes not. What changed and how do I fix this problem? Running OS X10.4.11 and software updates are current. Ran diagnostics and checked out ok.Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

Why are my programs quiting unexpectedly and repeatedly when I try to open them?
After updating my Java for Mac OS X 10.6 version 7, Safari, Macbook EFI Firmware, Apple Software Installer, and iTunes this morning, my iTunes, iPhoto, Word, Adobe, etc. are not opening for me. I get an error stating that the program has quit unexpectedly each time I attempt to open one of these programs. Any thoughts as to what is going on and how I can fix it? I would really appreciate some help!
''' "Why does Mozilla use files that I can't open?" '''
The bookmarks backup JSON files '''''are''''' human readable in a text program like Notepad or Wordpad. But those JSON files don't have any separate lines of numbers and text they're one long line. Those files are made to do their job in Firefox, not to be looked at by users.
What type of problem do you have that prompted you to attempt to read a file like that? -
Programs quit unexpectedly every time I try to open.
I have the Adobe Creative Suite production premium CS6 and everything was working fine yesterday. Today I was cleaning out all the stupid fonts I dont use in Font Book and then I deleted a LOT of them. Now most of the programs will not open (Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge, After Effects)... It starts to load up and then says it quit unexpectedly.. Can anyone help me?
Thanks
- CodyRempleseed,
Is it an option to go back to an earlier time/state of the computer, obviously, after securing any files that may disappear (if you have them on your main harddisk)? -
Hi guys,
I've been experiencing program shutdowns unexpectedly after the update. For one, I'm not sure if the update was the culprit or things just happened. Before the update my MBP can be left on (no reboot) for 7 days without any of such incidents, ok maybe 1 or 2 but recently, programs have been quitting unexpectedly and they consist of both universal binaries and rosetta apps. My laptop has not rebooted for 4 days and issues like this are starting to pop out. Finder is abit laggy, I had to close all apps and restart them before everything is back to normal. Dock hangs in the sense that when mouseover nothing is being animated because I have the manification feature turned on. Dashboard loads very slow.
Do I need a reboot? Because I have this impression that OS X can be on 24/7 without any rebooting because of its background cron jobs in the middle of the night.I'd suggest you run Disc Utility and 'Repair Permissions' on the drive.

Why does a program quit unexpectedly?
I haven't had any problems with programs closing unexpectedly on my week 32 MacBook yet, but just now my Mozilla Firefox quit unexpectedly. What makes it do that?
Also, I hate asking this, but is it a sign of worse things to come? I just had a speaker problem today (suddenly going mute) and these two problems I also had on my week 22 MacBook that was a total lemon and resulted in me getting this one as a replacement.
I'm nervous. I'm in school and I can't even imagine having to go through the MacBook repair process again.
Advice? There are a multitude of reasons why an application might quit unexpectedly. It could be the app, the OS, hardware, other software, anything. It's wholly impossible (without seeing a crash log) to answer this.
The way I see a potential repair while you're in school is that you have two choices:
1) (Try to) Use the machine that doesn't work well, if at all, and complain the entire time, run the risk of losing data or, in fact, the machine entirely - leaving you up that one creek that rhymes with "hit".
or
2) If/when a repair is needed, just suck it up and send it in and go to a computer lab for a week or so, use a roommate or friend's machine.
Either way, you're going to be without it for a spell. -
All creative suite (cs3) programs quit unexpectedly upon startup
Hey there,
Been having some issues with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Indesign and Illustrator. Whenever I open I immedietly get the error message 'Photoshop quit unexpectedly'. I have tried repairing my permissions, no updates have been installed, everything has been working fine for nearly three years! The only difference is that I recently had my laptop sent to me from the UK to Australia as I have moved out here, so it sat unused for about two months. Do I need permissions for a different country or is it something else?

Programs "quit unexpectedly" for third and fourth user accounts
I have set up 3 additional user accounts for my children, all with managed usage. The admin account and first additional user account works just fine. The third account and any additional others all shortly encounter "application quit unexpectedly" errors for Mail and the Big Bang Game applications.
Why do these apps not work for these users, but work fine for the first two??Please post a Safari crash report.

Few of programs quit unexpectedly
why is few of my programs quit unexpectedly
If you go to the Apple Menu and select 'About this Mac', it'll give you the information about what RAM/OS Version/iMac Model - in fact pretty much everything you need to know about the tech specs of your Mac.
How long have you used McAfee - that immediately rings alarm bells as there are many threads on here where anti-virus software often proves to be the cause of problems. Can you use the McAfee uninstaller to remove it to see if that is the cause of your problems.
You don't actually need any AV software to protect your Mac - but if you feel you must install something the free/donationware clamXav is often recommended on here as being a good, trouble-free choice: http://www.clamxav.com/
If you run Windows on your Mac alongside OSX you do need to install AV for the Windows OS. -

PB G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hello Patricia.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
There appears to be a problem with the junk filter, but I’m not sure the procedure I usually suggest to get rid of the files used by the junk filter (so that Mail creates them anew) will work in your case:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash. This file stores information about what does and doesn’t constitute junk, and allows the junk filter to learn. Deleting this file is what Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset does. The file was called LSMMap in early versions of Mail; delete that as well if you see it.
4. Locate any MessageRules.plist (Mail 2.x) and/or MessageSorting.plist (Mail 1.x) files and move them to the Desktop. This is where Mail stores all the rules, including the rule that governs what the junk filter does.
5. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
6. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox mailboxes there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
Note: Steps 5, 6 and 7 may be unnecessary. Also, messages in Junk mailboxes with an .mbox suffix are stored locally and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there that you want to preserve, either try skipping those steps, or move the messages to another mailbox in Mail first, or move Junk.mbox to the Desktop (to be imported back later) instead of to the Trash. Junk mailboxes with an .imapmbox suffix aren’t a concern because they are stored on the server and Mail would rebuild them automatically.
8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
If the above solves the problem and you don’t have any rules you’d like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, just trash the rules files that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder. -
The lead-in above pretty much states the problem. I am attempting to install Windows 7 from a disk, but that is not the issue. Boot Camp 5 just quits and reopens. I then repeat. Help.
I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.
