Programs restarting without being prompted

I have Microsoft Word and Safari on my computer. Whenever I log out and log back in they start up without being prompted. It also happens when I restart my computer. I have forced quit but I don't know why this is happening. Any help is appreciated!

Hi Jessica
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items (tab) > and remove those App's from the list of items set to automatically startup when you log in.

  • PDF popup, in FireFox, without being prompted

Hello, I am using Windows XP Pro, SP3, fully patched and updated. My Adobe Reader is version 9.5.0. I am currently using FireFox 3.6.25, but this problem has been affecting my computer for the last year and a half, and happens with newer versions of FireFox, up to and including version 8. I downloaded a PDF file of an air compressor users manual and saved a copy to a folder on my desktop (where I store all of my PDF files).
Now, whenever my FireFox browser is up and running, this PDF file will pop up every three hours, or so. It will initially pop up about ten minutes after the browser is started, and then about three hours after I close the reader program. It, neither the file, nor Adobe Reader, asks for permission to run, the PDF file, just comes up fully formed and running in Reader.
I have search in my Reader preferences/options/setting and can’t find any setting, control, action, button or choice that allows me to stop this pop up behavior. I can move the file to another location on my “c” drive, move it to another hard drive altogether, or even rename it, all to no avail, the popup behavior remains.
Is this a Adobe “problem”, or setting, a FireFox problem (as it only happens when the FireFox browser is running), or something else I am not aware off? Thanks for any help, in advance!!

Hello Ankit, and thanks for help:
This behavior only happens with this one PDF, no others, and I have hundreds saved to the same folder.
Speak of the devil, as I was typing the first sentence of this email, it popped up. My FireFox browser is set to start when I boot my computer, and that happened about ten minutes ago.
I rarely use IE and never use any other browser. When I do use IE it is only for those websites that still don't function properly with FireFox, and I generally get there via a FireFox add-on that opens a version of IE within the FireFox browser. Also on rare occasions, I will open IE directly to view my daughters school grades, again because that website doesn't handle FireFox properly. In any case, whenever I use IE, I only keep that tab or browser running for a very short period of time, just long enough to capture my data needs, generally less than five minutes, then shut it down,........ But, I don't recall this PDF behavior ever happening with the IE usage.

If I understand your request, it means remotely accessing my computer's drives to observe the PDF's behavior, program settings and preferences, registery settings, etc. I am not comfortable doing that, as my computer has a large amount of proprietary business information and personal financial information. If there is information I can pass on to you manually, or if I can contact you when the behavior happens, that would be OK.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Firefox will randomly try to save pages without being prompted too

I'll be browsing the web and left-click on a link then firefox will bring up the "save box" without being prompted too. It happens most often in Facebook, Escapist Magazine and Youtube, but will happen when I use Google.

Most links are to web pages that Firefox handles itself. Some are to other kinds of files and if the server tells Firefox to handle it as a download, it will display the Open/Save or Save/Cancel dialog. If this happens with files that clearly are supposed to display in Firefox, then there could be an issue with your settings for that kind of page or file in: Tools > Options > Applications.
I realize that's a very general answer, so if you can post a couple URLs to pages and indicate which links have the problem, people can take a look and make more specific suggestions.
By the way, the Skype add-on can make changes to pages that cause them to behave differently, so you might try disabling it except when you need it.

  • TS1702 How do I stop unwelcome Huffington Post news article videos from playing without being prompted??

When I open a news story on the Huffington Post App on my iPhone, the video associated with the story starts playing without being prompted.  Anyone know how to turn off this feature?  I've used this App for years and this problem has just started within the last week.  Thanks!

Don't use the app. That's about the only way to avoid it that I know of.

  • Is there a way to open Illustrator, without being prompted and seemingly forced to purchase monthly cloud membership?

I purchased the full version of CS6 and now suddenly get prompted to sign up for creative cloud membership.  I am not able to open Illustrator without choosing (and paying for presumably) a cloud membership.  I only want access to the program which I purchased and own outright.  Is there someway of bypassing the signup to cloud membership?  I'm able to open PS CS6 currently without difficulty but not Illustrator. It seems unfair to pay high $ for a product about a year ago and suddenly not be able to even open the program without shelling out a monthly fee. Thanks for any help.

    safehandle,
The issue has been up here before.
From what I (fail to) remember, I am unsure whether it is possible to avoid its occurrence.
If no one here is able to offer a definite answer, I will alert one of our forum staff friends who will hopefully be able to alert the right one to deal with it.

  • Yahoo has just added a toolbar without being prompted - how do I remove it?

I have just opened Firefox and a Yahoo toolbar has suddenly downloaded, without prompting - how do I remove it?

    Thanks, jscher2000.
I knew it would be easy but just didn't know where to start. It's amazing how much easier life is when there's someone around who knows what they're doing!
    Thanks, again, for your help.

  • How do I connect to remote mac with ard without being prompted for username and pasword

I setup my Mac Pro to connect to my Macbook Pro (both on snow leopard at the time) with apple remote desktop when I used to select control on my Mac Pro I used to be able to start controlling my MBP straght away with out needing to enter a username or pasword.
When Lion came out I upgraded my Mac Pro and left my MBP on snw leoprd no settings on my MBP were changed I installed the ARD control software on my Mac Pro and when I clicked control I was requested to enter a username and password.
Does anyone know why I can no longer control my MBP without entering a username and pasword and how to setup ARD to allow me to do that?

Create a text file with name boot.properties in the directory <Domain_Home>/servers/<Server_Name>/security. The file must contain the following:
    username=<username>
    password=<password>
Replace <username> and <password> with the username and password of an WLS admin user (e.g. weblogic). They will be encrypted automatically by WLS at first boot.

  • How can I connect my iTouch to itunes without being prompted to buy upgrade

Ever since that new upgrade for the Ipod Touch came out, I've been getting the page prompting me to buy it every time I connect my Ipod Touch to Itunes. The only options I get are 'buy now' or 'remind me later'. I don't want to buy it and I I'm quite sure about it so I don't need a reminder. Why isn't there an option 'No, I'm not interested'? Is this Apple's way of annoying you into buying something as they think eventually you'll give in if you have to put up with the prompt every day?

As luck would have it, as soon as I post the question - there now is a 'no thanks' option. Maybe I've hit 'remind me later' enough times fo rthem to get the message. Hopefully hitting 'no thanks' once will suffice and I won't have to do it everytime!

  • Complete web pages (in the form of ads basically) pop up without being prompted in a new window even with adblocker on.

A few times per day, on average, a new web page will appear in a new window...basically marketing their product or solution. I have ABP turned on. I'd like to know how I can prevent this from occurring.

    Hi,
I have the same issue, but the thing is, "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page" is OFF, and about:config shows that "accessibility.blockautorefresh" is false.
So everything should be OK, however I constantly get the "This web page is being redirected to a new location. Would you like to resend the form data you have typed to the new location?" message, and it's utterly annoying.
Any ideas? I would appreciate any help! Thanks!

  • E-mail opens 20+ message boxes without being prompted

When .Mail starts up, without touching another button, 20 or more previously read messages all open up their own message window and seize the processor until they all have opened on the desktop.
Any ideas what is possessing Mail to act so strangely? And ideas on how to troubleshoot would be much appreciated.
    njakus

Launch Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This should prevent Mail from trying to select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
BTW, if you’re using Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.

  • Q10 deletes emails without being prompted to do so

My Q10 deletes most emails that go into the server of my service provider without me doing anything. Sometimes within seconds, other times after half an hour and some messages stay on the phone. It is very annoying as I miss messages when I am not constantly checking the phone. This only happens with this account. When I get them from my web site they are okay. Anybody has experience with that?

Are you sure they aren't going in to a different folder or a spam folder?

  • I cannot open Firefox without being prompted to drag the Firefox icon into My Applications. It also does not let me eject the drive while Firefox is open. If anyone could help, it would be appreciated.

    I use a Mac. OS X.
I click on the Firefox icon to go online.
It opens up the drive that I originally used to install the update(3.6.15). I have to select open because it is an unknown application.
    Firefox opens to the homepage.
I try to eject the drive.
It says "The disk 'Firefox' cannot be ejected because 'Firefox' is using it. Quit the application and try to eject the disk again."
    I do that.
The same thing happens again and again.
I try to download the update again.
    Same thing.
I won't download the Firefox 4 RC because it makes my online browsing very slow.

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.

  • I want to purchase a powerbook that will run a music program like MOTU or Pro Tools as well as run Final Cut Pro without being sluggish...any help?

I want to purchase a powerbook that will run a music program like MOTU or Pro Tools as well as run Final Cut Pro without being sluggish...any help?

The only way that would work out is if you ran exactly the versions that were made for old PowerBooks. Anything newer may require Intel and not run, or will strain the poor old G4 CPU.
Your needs have to be modest, too, because the problem with older music and video software is that they are not current as far as formats and codecs for the Web. If you want to output H.264, the current standard for YouTube/Flash video, older software may not support it, and in addition, H.264 is processor-intensive and is tailor-made for today's multi-core, 2+ GHz processors. It will overwhelm a G4. A PowerBook G4 can barely play YouTube videos.
More perspective: The PowerBooks worked great for miniDV format editing. In other words, 480i SD/standard definition video in use from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. If that is all you want to do, edit tape from an old miniDV camera to SD output, then OK.
But if you want to edit today's HD video, whether 720p from a snapshot camera/iPhone 4 or 1080p from a DSLR, the PowerBook and the software for it will either not recognize AVCHD/H.264, or it will slow the PowerBook to a dead crawl.
I'm in agreement with the above: Intel Macs have been out for so many years that getting a used one is a much better deal than a dead-end PowerBook. And I loved (still love) my PowerBooks.
