Programs won't launch from Dock or Applications.

has anyone seen this problem; I click on a program in the dock and the black triangle appears showing it is to launch, but the black triangle flashes two or three tims and then disappears. the program never runs. i am having this problem on one of 9 G4 computers running 10.3.9. it only happens with Safari, Peak Express 4 and install files compressed with stuffit.

If you have updated the software then the original icon in the dock may not work.
Try this:
1. Click on the Macintosh HD
2. Click The Applications Button.
3. Find the application you wish to open
4. If the application icon bounces in a different place to normal then Ctrl click on that Icon and choose "keep in dock"
5. Drag the old icon of the dock on to the desktop, It will go up in a cloud of smoke.

  • Applications won't launch from dock

I have recently had to re install tiger and was not able to use archive function so had to erase.
Most files etc were OK and was able to shift stuff around between the macs hard drive and an external storage device.
Lost of stuff got duplicated and I've been trying to sort out the mess!
I'm pretty well there now but have one last weird problem.
I can't launch the Word or Excell apps from the dock.
I've deleted and added them and also re installed the Office software but it still won't work.
I can open any of my Word or Excell files from the docs folder but the programme won't launch from the dock
    Any ideas?

What happens if you go to office preferences (from your pulldown menu with Word or Excel open) >> general >> "show project gallery at startup" and deselect that item?
It's also possible that it could be a font that Office does not care for. Try dragging ~(yourhome)/library/fonts to the desktop and logging out and back in or restarting.

  • Some programs won't launch from menu/desktop - XFCE

I've recently installed a few programs for my desktop - mainly Anki, and MDM login manager. They installed fine, and as most programs do - produced a menu app for it. But for some odd reason, no matter if I try to access it by the XFCE menu, or even creating a desktop icon for it; the program will not launch. Nothing happens. On the other hand, if I launch the program through the terminal I have no issues. It's more of an annoyance than it is a huge problem, but if anyone could help me fix this I'd really appreciate it.
As a side note, it's not an issue of logging out and back in as this has been an ongoing problem for about a week of logout's/reboot's/shutdown's, etc. I'm not sure what kind of information you would need to help diaognose this, so if I can provide anything else of use, please let me know.

For Anki - Both .desktop and terminal command is the same. When trying to launch it with run in terminal, it complains of an untrusted application launcher. I have the choice to launch anyways, or mark as executable. After marking it as executable, the terminal appears for a brief second, then disappears with nothing else.
MDM Launcher - The .desktop is different - pkexec /usr/bin/mdmsetup - where I just type mdmsetup in terminal. When clicking to run in terminal, a polkit authentication pops up in the terminal with sudo and asks for permission to run, and my password. After I type it in, it disappears and nothing launches. If I go into a terminal and choose the same as the the .desktop, the authentication pops up, I repeate the process but this time I get this error: "(mdmsetup:3766): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:"

  • Safari 2.0.3 won't launch from Mail

Since the new security update yesterday for OS X4.5, my Safari browser 2.0.3 won't launch from the Mail e-mail program.
What do I do now? It was working perfectly before the update.
    Kathy : (

I've had the same problem using numerous apps and on different Macs since updating to 10.4.5. Today, using the "check for updates" in Quicken 2006, something corrupted Safari completely and it won't launch at all - double click merely shows the icon in the Dock for a second before it quits. I did all the usual stuff: deleted the cache, cookies, etc. Finally trashed the app but now I can't figure out how to reinstall it alone...

  • All programs run very slow from dock

programs run very slow from dock sometimes does not open at all

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • Programs won't launch since 10.4.10 upgrade

    Anybody out there?
Since upgrading to 10.4.10, several programs won't launch. MS Word, Disk Utility, Adobe Acrobat, and others. Safari is just plain gone.
I'm no whiz, but I'm not a novice either. My intel-based iMac did not have any system disks when I got it from Apple (don't ask me why).
I would think I could just download a copy of Safari, but all I can find is upgrades and they won't install.
Q: How do I reinstall Safari? How do I get system disks?
    Thanks,
    Flounder

He's already indicated that he solved the problem the same way you did. For both posters, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before updating. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall everything. Then, peruse these

    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html

and adopt the necessary habits to mitigate what happened to you.

  • Programs will not open from Dock

I have updated my Macbook Pro with Yosemite which has led to - a lot. Programs will not open from Dock, they are just revealed in Finder. Scrolling with mousebuttons in a browser will zoom instead of scroll, the courser will not change after changing tool in Indesign. Just to mention a few problems i have discovered so far. I think I was an idiot to uppgrade to Yosemite. PLEASE HELP!

Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions, then quit DU and Restart the MBP.  If that does not clear the issues, restart again holding the Command and R keys, and from Utilities on the menu bar select Install Mac OS X.  That will reinstall Yosemite but leave your content and settings intact.  See if that repairs whatever is broken.

  • HT2515 Can't launch iChat from dock or applications/finder, it won't open to set up new account. Suggestions?

When accessing iChat for the first time to set up an account, clicking on the iChat icon from either finder-applications, or from the dock, iChat will not open and take me to the account set up to create a new account. Suggestions?

    HI,
If you go to Applications and click iChat once to highlight can you then do a Get Info ?
    Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) and the i key together.
This will bring up the Info panel
Which version of iChat does it say it is ?
At OS X 10.7.3 it should be version 6.0.1
If this is OK then close the panel
Go to the Finder > Go Menu and hold th ALT key down - then Select Library from the list.
    Open the Preferences folder.
Find com.apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.ichatAgent.plist plus th ones with AIM and Jabber in the File names.
Drag them all to the Trash
    Restart iChat.
If iChat is NOT at version 6.0.1 then download and reinstall the COMBO version of the OS  X 10.7.3 Update over what you have.  (this should Update iChat)

  • Program won't launch on Mac for one user but will for another

We just installed a new program (that is Java based) that we are about to start using in our office. It is the WorkFlows client from SirsiDynix. It works fine on my MAC but 2 other users in our office have MACs and it won't launch. We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck.  We created another user on one of the computers and installed the program and it launches fine. Both users are Administrators. We have uninstalled and reinstalled the program but still no luck. We have ran the Repair Permissions utility on the HD. Is there a tool or software that we can use to compare permissions or settings of the 2 users to find out why the program won't run under one of them?
We have Mac Mini OS X version 10.9.5
Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Programs won't launch

    Hello,
This problem started a few weeks ago. I tried to open iTunes and it wouldn't launch. I did some troubleshooting with that to no avail. Unfortunately since then, my Firefox and Safari won't launch. I downloaded the OS X Combo Update and I couldn't launch that either. I can't launch Cocktail to help with the Cache. I have read many posts and checked my disk permissions (which seem fine), rebooted from the Install disk, checked for corrupt fonts and removed com.apple.plist files.
I've also checked out http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/multipleappsquit.html and can't get anywhere there either. I am just your average user, don't understand alot of the jargon but am trying to work through this since you all have helped me out so many times before.
It may be a framework or software update glitch? I'm just not sure. I have many crash logs from all different programs if that would help anyone.
I am trying not to reinstall my OS X as the disks I have on hand are 10.1 (is that a big deal?) I also read about bad sectors, my disk drive has been making odd noises lately, could that be it? I just don't know how to pin point one problem. Can anyone help????? Please?

I don't need to transfer any files from the iMac and I don't have a firewire cable to use the iBook to startup.
I just need to figure out how to get these programs to launch. It started with iTunes and went to Firefox and Safari. I tried booting up in Safe Mode and using a different user account, neither of these have worked either. It seems I am going in circles since I am told to try Disk Utility but I can't use that without the Tiger Install cd.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I know this is a pain for people, but below are snippets of the error logs for the failed Itunes and Safari launches. It must have something to do with a software update or font or something screwing up the launch? I can't even launch Cocktail or Combo Update to try to help...
Anyone have any ideas? I saw the thread about the StuffItAVR and even got rid of that all together? Anything else? I appreciate it!

  • Safari won't open from dock after upgrading to leopard

I've upgraded from OS X 10.4.11 Tiger to OS X 10.5.2 Leopard with the upgrade DVD which arrived today and all the available Software Updates (which included a Safari update). No more Software Updates are available - I've checked.
Safari and Mail will now not open from the Dock. Neither will iChat, AddressBook, iDVD (which produces a pop-up saying it "quit unexpectedly" - it didn't appear to start at all), and iCal. Safari and Mail WILL open from my Applications folder thankfully. I haven't checked the other mentioned applications, except iDVD which does the same non-opening with pop-up from Applications too.
I have run permissions verification and permissions repair from Disc Utility on the Mac HD. I have run disc verification from there too and the result said the disc appears OK. Neither solved the Dock problem.
The icons in the Dock don't bounce or anything. They remain still and un-animated. I just get a pop-up message saying "You cannot use the application "Safari.app" with this version of Mac OS X". Which surprises me as it's a native Apple Mac application isn't it? Obviously it says "Mail.app" for mail, "iChat.app" for iChat etc.
I reinserted the Leopard installation DVD and installed all the applications from the Optional Install.mpkg folder, including Safari and Mail. This has made no noticeable difference: they still won't open from the dock. I have just noticed that an additional icon for Safari appears at the far (right hand) end of the dock when I open it from Applications. But it disappears when I close Safari, so no good for opening it.
It could be worse, I can actually open some of the applications from my Applications folder. But this is inconvenient and besides, it is supposed to work from the Dock.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Can anyone help me to solve it please?
I have backed-up (not using time machine - I backed-up before I upgraded). I hope to avoid having to erase and reinstall but I will IF that will solve this problem (and not cause any others
    Help please. Thanks.

    Hi
Dock icons are simply alias. The ones on your dock may be corrupted, especially since you can open Safari from the applications folder. To remove an icon, right click on it and select "remove from dock", or simply drag it off the dock, where it will disappear in a puff of virtual smoke.
Then, go to the Finder and single-click/hold any item you want on the dock. Drag it there.
Try Safari or the other apps again.
Specific to the Leopard upgrade, important any 3rd party items installed in your system are Leopard compatible, otherwise you'll have operational problems when using them.
One other thought. It is possible the Dock is corrupted, causing the problem. If the above does not resolve the problem, go to the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. There, move the com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db files to the desktop, then relaunch the Finder (hold down the option/command/esc keys to reveal the Quit Panel. Select the Finder>relaunch.

  • TS4412 Aperture 3.4.3 simply won't launch from a fresh install

So, I just purchased Aperture from the App Store, and it won't launch.
    I tried the advice here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4412
To no avail. Since the app hasn't launched, there is no preference file to delete.
The only other variables, of course, would be my hardware and OS, but all of that is up to date.
I kind of need the app running... Any idea what's happening?
    Cheers,

Do you have Final Cut installed? The crash dump has all the signs of the classic Final Cut /Aperture conflict.
If so the easiest way to fix the situation is to just install the operating system Mountain Lion again. Re-installing the OS will not damage your data files however is it always a good idea to have a full backup in cases lie this.
