Progress bar freezing computer on startup

I've looked through many threads, and can't find the same problem. I need to reformat my hardrive. I'm attempted to repair the disk from the install disk, and it fails and tells me to reformat the drive. When I reboot for normal start up so I can back up, I now get a progress bar that freezes part way through, and eventually just shuts my computer down. The progress bar is freezing at the same point that it the verification was freezing, so I assume it's inhibiting the start up. My question is, is there something I can do in single user mode that will let me onto my computer?

If you have tried a safe boot(power up holding the left shift key, which takes longer) if you can do this and it works do a back up. If no success, your drive may have failed, there is some recovery software out there, but it is expensive (Disk Warrior) for an example, there are others, but depending on how long it has been since your last B/U and how valuable the data is you can also go to a data recovery specialist (Killer expensive)
If no joy from above take it to an Apple Genius bar and see what they may be able to do for you, diagnosis is free.
Maybe someone else can chime in here with more advice/suggestions.
I truly wish you the best

  • Yahoo Webmail Blue Progress Bar Freezes adding attachments

Using Mac OS X, Leopard 10.5.6 and Apple Safari 3.2.1. There is a bug when using Apple Safari with Yahoo Webmail. Whenever you attach a file (while composing a message), the blue progress bar (fills in behind the website address window) freezes. Everything continues working, but the blue progress bar freezes abouit half way. This always happens when attaching a file. The ONLY way to get functionality back is to reset safari. Also, if you open another tab, that other tab functions correctly even if the first tab (with Yahoo) is still frozen. All updates have been applied to the computer that are available. The blue progress bar is safari's way of telling you a website is loading.

    Hello,
This issue only happens when using Yahoo Webmail while using the Mac version of Safari.
Only a RESET safari returns normal operation to the blue menu bar.
    Here are steps to reproduce:
1.) Login into Yahoo Webmail (The new version, not the classic version), compose a message, attach a file. The blue menu bar that fills in behind the website address will fill in about 1/2 way and stay there. You can continue to finish and send your email, but the blue bar stays frozen. If you open a new tab, the new blue progress bar works fine, but the first tab remains frozen. Again, everything is function. The only way to fix is to RESET safari.
I have tried other accounts and computers. It even happens at the local Apple retail store. Oddly enough, this issue does NOT affect the Windows XP version of Safari.

  • Progress Bar and Errors on Startup

On startup I always have a progress bar while it is booting, It is like the Safe Mode one but Faster, sometimes.  Sometimes it goes very slow like the when I tried to repair my disk in safemode I booted my mac and it took like 20 minutes to turn on.  Sometimes on bootup I get a black screen untIil it is done.  I dont know why it does this, This is the Early 2012 Macbook Pro 15 inch.  I have bo warranty left and whenever I go to the Apple store they tell my a bunch of crap like its my fault then try to sell me a new computer so I cant get help from them.

Unless you are running Yosemite there should not be a progress bar during startup.

  • ITunes store won't load. The progress bar freezes at about 50% and I get nothing but a white screen.

I'm running iTunes 10.5 beta 7 but this issue has been happening since I was running 9.  One day I clicked on a link for an app I saw on techcrunch and it pulled up in iTunes as being in the UK store.  I clicked ok and my iTunes hasn't worked since.  I can log into my account but can't access anything in the store or Ping.  I've googled this issue and found some similar sounding stories but none of the solutions have worked.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled, turned of the itunes store in parental settings and checked "except for iTunes U", I've uninstalled apple aplication suport and installed safari and every other option I have found and nothing has worked.
Sometimes if I let it sit long enough what looks like an unstyled version of the store comes up but is completely unusable.
Just to be clear, this has been happening since before I was running any beta software or OS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you gchin.
I emailed apple support and they got back to me, I did what he said and it's fixed! SOLUTION found- see below.
    I said:
"I can't access the iTunes Store. When I click on it the progress bar stops at 50% and I'm left with a blank white screen (no error msg). I have uninstalled and reinstalled, run the iTunes diagnostics (it said all was ok), gone through all of the online help material and I've tried turning off my firewall. Nothing works. I can't sync my iphone either (stops on verifying iPhone so I think it's getting stuck on trying to contact the store). Plzz help."

  • Progress Bar freeze after 4.2.1 Update - any news?

    Hey Guys,
any news on the progress par freeze after the installation of 4.2.1 on the iPad?
After a horrible 8 hours(!) Backup phase, my iPad 3G 32 Gigabyte freezes after the progress bar reaches 80%. I tried to do a hard reset but it would just stuck at the same stage again after rebooting. My iPhone 4 synced just fine (5min. Backup-Phase to the max) and runs 4.2.1 without any hiccups. But the iPad, being once the love of my life, drives me MAD!!!!!
What did you do? Try to sync it again or just wait some days until the progress bar advances? I`m fed up with OS Updates for now... HEEEELLLLPPP!

Well, that didn't work. But in the process I cleaned up the folders that house my iTunes movies and music get rid of dupes, stuff I didn't want, and so on. However, I did find that I forgot to uninstall WiFi Sync before trying the upgrade. I downloaded the uninstaller and ran it, rebooted, and did the upgrade. Now my iPad is back. I hadn't realized that I had to uninstall WiFi Sync to upgrade the iPad.....

  • ITunes progress bar freezes iTunes, kinda.

So I just got my HD replaced. My iTunes library file (the .xml file) became corrupted. I started a new Library. I'm now in the midst of adding new songs, not the songs that I originally had in my iTunes. What happens though anytime I edit the id3 tags for more than one mp3. So lets say I add art work to an album. The progress bar pops up and freezes. iTunes though is still responsive. I can pause music. I can select a different track. Yet, the progress bar still is shown. I've been using iTunes for years and I know this isn't possible. It won't let me CMD+Q quit the app. But if I right click in the dock and choose Quit (not force quit) the app quits fine. I can then reopen it like normal.
Let's say I go back to the album that I was adding cover art too. Half of the songs will have the cover art, the other half not. I then have to add the art one by one or I'll get that same progress bar error. This is very annoying, since I'm building my library all over again. I have to quit and re open the app multiple times. Frustrating!
I've tried a new new Library file, I tried re-installing iTunes. Same thing happens. Should I just delete the entire iTunes folder in /Library? Will that fix it?

Boot from your System install disc and run Disk First Aid and Repair permissions.

  • Progress bar is disabled on startup

Every time I start up spotify on the pc, the progress bar is disabled. Its greyed out and I can't press previous, play, next or scrub through a song anymore. The buttons with lyrics, shuffle, the volume etc do work. The issue is usually temporarily resolved after updating spotify, however the next day its the same issue over again. This is happing since a couple of months now. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this? I am currently on version 1.07.157, windows 7.

Spotify should update every 2 weeks. If you are getting lots of frequent updates, then there could be a problem with your installation of Spotify.
Try a clean reinstall by also deleting the cache folders:
First uninstall Spotify and then delete these folders if they exist:
    C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Spotify
    and C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Spotify
    After that reinstall Spotify
If you can't find the folder, try this:
Uninstall Spotify: Start > Control Panel > Programs / Uninstall a Program > Spotify
Find your AppData folder and delete all Spotify data.
Start, run, type: %appdata% and hit enter
You probably see 4 folders; enter each and see if they contain a folder called Spotify. Delete the entire Spotify folder.
Restart your computer at this point.
    Reinstall Spotify (download)

  • Issues with publishing my iWeb site to .MAC - Progress bar freezes at 100%

Well, as topic says, i'm having troubles publishing my iWeb site to .MAC now since upgrading to '08. The progress bar reaches full circle, but then nothing. Left it uploading to .Mac for well over 2 hours one time while out of the house...nada. Sometimes i get an error message, sometimes not and have to close iWeb while it's still publishing.
    Any feedback regarding this?
    Thanks in advance.
    /Rich

Update: After 36 hours, I have successfully managed to upload my entire website via the "Publish All to .Mac" option. I now have blue indicators on the left side of my iWeb program in place of those pesky red ones. How did I do it? Well, I'm not sure. But on my last attempt I looked at the problem from a different perspective, so I took an alternate approach. I had a feeling that I was experiencing a network timeout issue caused by a 3rd party software, so I created a Whitelist entry on my website filtering software that allows unlimited access to "idisk.mac.com";; and "web.mac.com";; domains. I've got two kids at home, so I'm running the free OpenDNS Dashboard service on my network which provides content filtering (blocks adult site, phishing site, etc..). I started using this service two weeks ago. My last website update was a week before that. I figured I had nothing to loose by trying. To my surprise, it worked. Now, it took almost two hours to publish, of which the pie indicator was in the  "filled" position for a nerve racking hour. To reconfirm,  I then made a minor change to one of the pages on my website and re-published. This time using the "Publish to .Mac" option in place of the ALL option and once again it worked. It took less than 5 minutes. Now, I'm not sure if this is a coincidence, maybe Apple fixed the problem, or maybe my website filtering service was causing some type of time out issue all along??  Don't know.. But at least for now, I'm a happy camper since I have my site up.

  • Itunes store fails to load, and progress bar freezes, even though i am logged in.

i cannot get the itunes store to load on my windows 7 starter netbook. i use both firefox and IE browsers. and use a 3g dongle connection. itunes has been working fine up until a month ago. now it refuses to fully load. i have checked all intenet options which are correct. and firewall settings, which allows full access to itunes. running the itunes diagnostic reports that i am not the administrator ... despite the fact that i am signed into windows as an administrator!
i recently updated to itunes 10.4. should i go back to an earlier version?
what is causing this enduring frustating problem? and what is itunes doing about it?

i also got the very long list of titles,, in blue writing ... latest cds, movies etc, without any images! like a shopping list, or the bare bones of a web page. but this only appeared on screen after i disconnected from the internet.
i am amazed that itunes are not targeting this problem with a an alert on itunes. it is affecting quite a few users. but they don't seem to care. i've tried every means of contact, but just got the runaround treatment!

  • Firmware update progress bar appears and computer won't start up

    Hi,
I am on OS X 10.6 (the latest developer build, whose build number I can't remember and can't look up because my computer won't start up) and this morning when I tried to start up my computer, it chimed, the apple appeared but then a grey progress bar (like the one that appears during a firmware update) appeared at the bottom of the screen along with the customary spinner. This progress bar didn't update and after 10-ish seconds, it disappeared and left just the spinner. I left the computer in this state for 4 hours and nothing happened. It still starts up in single user mode (but I can't seem to get Open Firmware mode to load) and it starts Windows XP on another partition of my main HD.
When I start it in verbose mode, it says that my catalog B-tree has keys out of order and it is unable to repair them. Also, I get an error message from launchctl: "Bug: launchctl.c:2033 (23930):17: auditquickstart() == 0". Then later on it tells me to convert a few system plist files to launchd (all in the /etc/mach_init.d/ folder). The very last line says "launch_msg(): Socket is not connected".
I would rather not re-install the system, but if I have to, I guess I will. I appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this problem.
    Thanks,
    Kyle

Yes, they (the third-party utilities) both come on bootable DVD's. As I mentioned, since Snow Leopard was just released in its final version, the developers may be in the process of releasing updates.
Your situation is likely to be a case where the data corruption issue already existed before installing Snow Leopard, and the installation process made the problem more apparent (because something critical was installed where it was affected by the data issue).
It is a good idea to run +Repair Disk+ in Disk Utility on the startup volume before installing a major system update. Actually, I do it before any system-level update.
You should also have a backup (at least of your personal data if not the entire volume), in case something bad happens during a major system upgrade. If you were using Time Machine, the easiest recovery would be to reformat the internal drive and use the Time Machine complete volume restore utility to restore the volume back to the date/time state just before you installed Snow Leopard. Then, after restarting from that restored volume to make sure everything is working, start up from the Snow Leopard installation disc, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk+ (just to be sure), and run the upgrade to Snow Leopard again.
If you have a backup of at least your personal data, you may want to reformat the internal drive, install Snow Leopard and bundled apps, install your third-party apps from their original sources, update everything that needs updating, and restore your personal data.
If you don't have a backup, the best bet is to try either DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro. DiskWarrior is very specialized into repairing this type of data problem. TechTool Pro has similar capability, but it is a more general tool with other features.

  • IMac first shows progress bar on startup and then won't start up at all!

    Hi,
My iMac's somewhat ill I'm afraid. When I power it up, the Apple gong goes and I see the grey Apple logo appear. Few seconds later an progress bar shows up and it doesn't fill, in a minute it'll just disappears and the spinning thing under the logo appears. I've been waiting for over an hour and still nothing happened. I've tried force-powering it off and boot it up again, but still the same results, this is very very very annoying, especially since I don't know what to do at all about this expect for a complete clean install, but that'll be the last option I want, because all my photo's are on it, etc.
I've installed, an complete clean install, of Snow Leopard a month or two ago, and yesterday I powered the computer off the regular way.
Thanks a lot in advance you guys!
    EDIT
Another weird thing going on: I have my hard drive configured in two partition, one for Windows (sorry, needed to run AutoCad) and one for Mac OS. Now when I start up with the option button I get to see the two partitions and their names. My Mac drive now has got a different name, it's the same name, but with a " 1" behind it.
When I select the partition on Windows Vista, it now shows these disturbing folders:

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Boot from your install disc and run Disk Utiity to see if there are errors on the startup disk that need repairing.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
*" because all my photo's are on it, etc."*
If you can get the iMac to boot normally I suggest you back up those photos and any other important data to an external source ASAP in case there's a problem.
No idea why you are seeing those folders in Windows. Boot from your install disc and see what's going on.

  • Is progress bar on startup normal?

During startup after a complete shutdown, a progress bar appears while files are loading.  Is this normal for Lion?  Did not see it in Leopard.  Curious because two things happen during startup: automatic login does not work (minor issue) and monitor resolution defaults to highest resolution rather than resolution set in Preferences.

It's a bug of Lion. The same is happening to me. After turning off the computer, the gray bar appears and the login screen. Then i don´t have wifi or bootcamp partition. I have to reboot. I hope Apple fix it soon.
