Progress bar is stuck at 50% when updating to Yosemite

I am trying to update to Yosemite OS on my MacBook Pro but the screen just shows a half finished progress bar. What should I do?? I didn't make a backup and I'm afraid to hold down the power button. Any help is much appreciated!! I've tried to wait it out for some hours now, but still no luck.

I was also was stuck for a very long time (3 hours) with progress bar at 50%.   I followed Bjerglund's bravery and held the power button down and restarted again.  Happy to report, it also worked for me.   Thanks Bjerglund for leading the way.

I was trying to update my Ipad to IOS 8, the screen is all black with the apple logo on it and the progress bar is stuck.
I can't turn it off, and when i connect it to itunes, it doesn't display

Try putting the iPad in restore mode and see if iTunes recognizes it. The steps are below:
    Turn your iPad off.
Hold down the Home button and plug it into your computer. Keep holding the Home button until you see a screen telling you to connect to iTunes.
iTunes should show you a popup saying that there is an iPad that is in Recovery Mode and needs to be restored before you can use it. Click OK.
    Click on Restore iPad

I've been having the same problem for days and just solved it. Tried going to Apple ID and had all the same problems you did in the second paragraph. I signed out with my current username on the ipad under settings--->store and signed back in with my oldest apple id and password. Now the apps don't ask for a password to upgrade. I too had a username that wasn't an email address and had to change to one that was at some point. That's what caused the problems. Hope this can work for you.

I've had the same issue and despite clearing the PRAM and powering on and off repeatedly this is what has (at least temporarily) resolved my issue:
I've done this 3 times and sometimes it works right off the jump other times I've had to wait a bit and try again or power off and try again, once the start up screen is frozen hit Command : Option : Shift : Esc and a window should pop up "You restarted because of a problem..." from there you can go to your desktop. I haven't found an actual resolution to fix the problem but this does get you into your computer.
    Hope this helps!

    HELP

I went to the Apple store, the salesman held the power button andthe main button down for five seconds or so, and it came back to life.  The ironic thing is that I already tried that before going....Anyway, the iPod went into recovery mode, where I had to basically plug it back into iTunes, confirm the new update was downloaded properly, and then I had to wipe it clean in recovery ( or whatever you call it).  I put all my music back on it and now it works fine......good luck

  • Iphone 3G stuck in recovery when updating to 4.1

I don't really know what to do at this point -- I've had so many issues with iphone 3G that I'm ready to toss it all together. I tried to upgrade iphone from an older version of 3.0 series OS, but of course pressing the update button, and after waiting for my phone to back up for 45 minutes; iphone 3G decides that even after the progress bar completes the installation was unsuccessful and that there is a "1002 error". So not only is my phone not upgraded it's stuck in recovery mode. Attempting to restore yields the same error "1002". I've always had issues updating my phone it has never been straightforward and I've always had to troubleshoot why it wasn't responding properly, but now I can't get anything to work. Someone please help me save my investment I really don't know what to do at this point.

Well I concluded there must be a problem with that 4.1 upgrade. Ive been trying to upgrade a while now. It seemed to be working, then at the end, my computer crashed. When turning computer back on, I had an error message on itunes, 20001. So I guess I am giving up until Apple gets there act together. I unplugged phone and seems to be working okay now. I still have all my apps.

  • Progress Bar freeze after 4.2.1 Update - any news?

    Hey Guys,
any news on the progress par freeze after the installation of 4.2.1 on the iPad?
After a horrible 8 hours(!) Backup phase, my iPad 3G 32 Gigabyte freezes after the progress bar reaches 80%. I tried to do a hard reset but it would just stuck at the same stage again after rebooting. My iPhone 4 synced just fine (5min. Backup-Phase to the max) and runs 4.2.1 without any hiccups. But the iPad, being once the love of my life, drives me MAD!!!!!
What did you do? Try to sync it again or just wait some days until the progress bar advances? I`m fed up with OS Updates for now... HEEEELLLLPPP!

Well, that didn't work. But in the process I cleaned up the folders that house my iTunes movies and music get rid of dupes, stuff I didn't want, and so on. However, I did find that I forgot to uninstall WiFi Sync before trying the upgrade. I downloaded the uninstaller and ran it, rebooted, and did the upgrade. Now my iPad is back. I hadn't realized that I had to uninstall WiFi Sync to upgrade the iPad.....

  • Progress bar looping forever after installing Security Update 2007-2009

    Hi,
I installed the Security Update 2007-2009 in a MacBook with OS X Tiger 10.4.10 and I'm having a series of issues. First of all after the install it said something about some installers having errors and that they were placed in the trash, and after that it asked for a restart. I did the restart but the laptop froze on a screen with just the desktop background, it stayed there for a long while until I shutdown the computer manually. After that I turned on the laptop and it got stuck in the start-up screen with the Apple logo and the progress bar but in a different screen size.
After a while, I shutdown the laptop. Looked for possible solutions. Tried to boot in safe mode, it didn't work. It stayed in the progress bar loop. I then tried to reset the PRAM, didn't work but now the boot-up screen was in the correct size.
Tried to safe boot a couple of times again. Still not working. I booted from the install disk and did the verify and repair permissions. And then I tried to boot up again, in safe mode too, and it didn't work.
I really don't want to archive & install.
Can anyone help? I know I'm not the only one.

These problems can almost always be avoided by Repairing Permissions before & After every Update.
    Single User method might work...

Otherwise this might help... or not...

After that, assuming you have enough HD space, looks like an Archive & Install is in order.

  • Progress bar gets stuck at the end

I’m having problems with Flash Player and Microsoft
E-Learning Offline Player. The progress bar goes all the way to the
end but then nothing happends. It just gets stuck there.
    Has anybody had this problem?
What does the progress bar show, Flash Player loading,
    content loading or something else?

I've not heard of anyone else experiencing this problem (and I'm not). I've just done a quick search of Google and there's nothing coming up that I can see either. Your best bet would be to either try re-installing (which I know is a bit of a pain) or submitting a bug report to Apple. If you live near an Apple Store you could also try making an appointment at the Genius Bar and getting them to try.
Force quitting shouldn't be doing any more damage.

  • Progress Bar after typing in password. OS X Yosemite

I just updated to OS X Yosemite and it seems to be working fine but is any one else experiencing a progress bar appearing after entering in their password to access their computer?
it seems like this progress bar should show when the apple logo appears and not after typing in password
is it supposed to be like this?
MacBook Pro with Retina Display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

After further investigation, it is not the displaying of "Today" files that is the issue.  It appears that Finder / Favorites / All My Files is not correctly finding & displaying files when using the View / Arrange By / Date Last Opened criteria.  If I switch the criteria to / Date Modified, it finds & displays the file correctly.  See attached screen shots.  (It is possible that this problem existed before Yosemite, as I don't recall which criteria Finder was using before the upgrade.)

  • Lost bookmark favicons when updated to Yosemite

I lost all my favicons on my bookmarks when I updated to Yosemite. How do I get them back?

This sort of things happened all the time with Quicktime updates.
At one point the simple solution was to remove any evidence of the QT install package and to download and reinstall QT. Not so sure this will work with the current software but here's how to do it.
    To do a quicktime reinstall.
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • I am currently watching my tv screen saying "step 1 of 2 preparing update.  The progress bar is stuck at the P in preparing. Has been 20 min. now.

    What do I do now!?

Its not the software.  The update only takes about 10 min tops.  There is some kind of connection issue between your ATV and the update servers.
Although yes you are right about Apples software going sharply down hill in the last three years.

I am having Mac OSX Lion using Mac Book Pro.
    Please Help me

The download is over 4GB (4,000MB or 4,000,000KB).  If you have a basic internet service, it could take several hours to download.  Even a 10Mbps connection will take a little over an hour.

  • I just updated to OSX Mountain Lion, ever since I upgraded the progress bar in iCal showing my iCal update status does not move or ever go away? What could possibly be going on? Any help or ideas?

I haven't found anything in any help menus as of yet. And I'm a recent Mac convert....so I'm still new to how everything works. This is probably alot easier than I am making it....but I don't know how to go about fixing this. Thanks in advance!

    bsorensen,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    Are you using iCloud?
If so, go to Calendar>Preferences...>Accounts>Account Information, and delete/re-add your iCloud account information.
If not, try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Then go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check Calendars for functionality.
