Progressive video into DVD SP

Can you add progressive video to a DVD SP4 project?
I changed a 29.97 NTSC interlaced DV video to progressive video with Compressor 2 and I can't import it in a project in DVD SP 4. The accompanying .ac3 file imports OK.
I'm presuming it won't import because it is progressive video vs interlaced.
Does the DVD spec require interlaced video?

Here is a quick and dirty explanation of why not to make your DVD with progressive video.

"The video that is stored on an NTSC DVD-Video disc is stored as 29.97 fps interlaced video. To view the interlaced fields as progressive frames (like through the component outputs of a DVD player that supports progressive playback), the player has to internally de-interlace the video before sending it out. So there is no advantage to rendering or transcoding interlaced source video as progressive if you are going to DVD-Video."

Importing Compressed Video into DVD studio Pro: PROBLEM WITH SYNC

This post regards software from Final Cut Studio 3
So, I have made a 2 minute clip in FCP7, exported it, compressed it using compressor, and then opened up dvd studio in order to burn it.
I have made sure the lengths of the audio and video were equal in FCP.
The problem is that when i drag the M2v and AC3 files into the DVD studio pro timeline, The audio is slightly longer than the video track.
I am creating a loop and want to duplicate the tracks within DVD studio to make use of the full dvd....so after i have added the files into the timeline a few times, there is a noticable lag, due to the discrepency between the length of audio and the length of the video.
I have even tried to change the length, under 'duration'in the track menu, but this makes no difference.
any help much appreciated.

I'm not surprised to hear that the clips are for an Art installation. I once helped my partner with multiple looped VHSs for a Degree Show & believe me DVDs make life a whole lot easier!
In conclusion I would recommend that you do a separate sound & vision edit, so to speak. Once you have finished your vision edit, lay down the single (compressed) vision clip on a track in DVD SP. Loop it to taste, and make a pencil note of the number of loops. Go back to FCP & duplicate your original final edit (ie the 'lock down') & loop the sound to match. Play out just the complete soundtrack at the new ~20 minutes and encode the resulting mix to AC3. Add it into DVD SP3. Voila! Really this is no different from making a movie; when the sound is going to be worked on by a whole different set of people from the pictures and both added together when complete.
... is there an alternative sound format to export in that is compatible with dvd studio pro that will sync perfectly in the sequence?
Of course uncompressed .aiffs don't suffer from the frame-based problem and are compatible with DVD SP. However using uncompressed sound is not recommended as this can lead to playback problems - especially with DVD-Rs - because of the high bit-rate.

Exporting final cut video into DVD.

Hi I'm exporting video from final cut into IDVD but having problems as every video is pixelated, i need help in telling me which is are the best formats and settings to set it to, we are mostly doing wedding videos, and we want the quality of the dvd to be good in a tv and on my 30'' apple screen, any help is much appreciated, this forum is great...thank you all...

Use *Export/Quicktime Movie* (not Export/Using Quicktime Conversion): then you can select whether to Make Movie Self-Contained or not. Quality is the same, but if movie is self-contained you can move it to another Mac for burning; on the other hand it takes more time and disk space.
The resulting .mov file may be imported into iDVD, which will take care to compress it to MPEG2 before burning.
Note that this workflow is good for creating DVDs with iDVD. But the resulting DVD is best watched on a real (interlaced) TV, not on a (progressive) Mac/PC monitor.

Different ways to import 24fps video into DVD SP?

Hello.
I am making a NTSC HD DVD with 1280x720 24fps video clip, and there are few things that's not clear to me...
In the mannual, it says that 'if you import 24fps MPEG-2 assets, they are handled correctly and remain 24fps when you build the project.' 'If you import 24fps QuickTime assets, they are encoded as either 29.97fps or 25fps MPEG-2 files, based on your project's video standard, and no longer 24fps when you build the project.'
If I want to keep 24fps, should I definitely encode to MPEG-2 with Compressor? Or those are just the 2 different ways to result in the same end since 24fps will be played with 3:2 pull down in DVD player? Will there be any quality difference between the two method?
Also, I did a test HD authoring, and I made an 720p mpeg2 with 23.97fps. Yet, when I import it to the project, Frame Rate in Video Asset says 59.94... I am sure that I select 23.97 for encode setting in Compressor. Does anybody have any clue for this?

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

I have a 40 minute 4:3 DV format video in final cut pro and I need to fit it on a DVD (4.7 gig) using DVD studio Pro. I have the whole FInal Cut Pro package (compressor, live type, etc...) so how would I compress the video and then put it in DVD studio pro, with the highest video quality possible?

How do I keep the quality when I bring a video into Dvd studio pro 3

just curious, the quality is really bad when I burn a dvd. the m2v movie that comes out is really bad, just curious if you would know how to fix this. It looks fine when I export it from fcp6 but when I bring it in to DSP3 it looks like something that's gone through the system of an old women.

Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty. That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.

Do I need to compress video before importing into DVD SP?

this is probably stupid question, but I would like to know, if I need to compress my video before I import it into DVD SP as an asset. It looks like everyone use Compressor before importing into DVD SP, (setting up number of passes, bit rates and so on), and then they do it again when setting up preferences in DVD SP. (setting 1 pass or 2passes, bit rate values)
So is not the video actually compressed twice? Once in Compressor and once in DVD SP?
And also, what video formats are actually OK to import into DVD SP? (QT, AVI, FCP movie, etc)
Does DVD SP take them all, or does it only have to be QT?

m2v will not be recompressed when placed on tracks (though in some instances it may recompress on menus.) Ultimately it is better to compress outside of DVD SP for control of encodes (and making AC3 files) and also some formats may not be supported by importing into DVD SP directly.

Importing Sony DVDirect Video on DVD into FCE

Hello...good wishes,
I've been recording video from a Canon XL2 directly to DVD using a Sony VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Burner. When I try to import this video material into Final Cut Express, FCE does not recognize the format.
Apple Support says that the XL2 Camcorder is a supported device in FCE, but is not able to be conclusive regarding video recorded to DVD using the Sony DVDirect Burner.
The only way I've found to get any of this video into FCE is to play the DVD's in a standard DVD player' record the video back onto DV tape, and import them through the XL2. This is a daunting, funky proposition given the hours and hours of video I need to edit - and I worry about degradation of quality using this process.
Are there any third party drivers written out there or do any of you have ideas how I can get this video from DVD to FCE?

I use a Sony VRD-VC20 to burn Tivo recordings and VHS tapes to DVD. I just picked up a program called Cinematize2. It's a DVD clip extractor that retails for about $50 US. It allows you to set an in and out point on a DVD and extract the clip into a format compatible with FCP/FCE. Previously I used MPEG Streamclip 1.3.1 which allows you to export mpeg2 files to Quicktime, AVI, or DV format for use in FCP/FCE. In order to use the MPEG2 playback and converter feature you will also need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2) for about $30 US. If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/download).

Video Error importing into DVD SP

I am trying to get a project burned to DVD. This is the first time I've use DVD studio Pro. I had the Menu created and everything looked good. When I went to render it, it said my bit-rate was too high... so I re-compressed my source video at a lower bit-rate and imported it into DVD SP to replace the original Asset. It seemed to work, but now all I can see is the last 5 min. of the video... the first 25 min. of it is just a black screen.
I opened the m2v file in quicktime, and it looked fine... so the problem is not with the compressed video, it's something to do with how DVD SP is importing it
Any ideas of what could be wrong?

did you remove the video from the track and deleted the asset from the browser?

Bringing Videos into iMovie from DVDs

I am a dance teacher and I have several dance teach DVDs. I created most of these from a VHS to DVD machine. They do work on standard DVDs and on the Mac.
But, after spending the day reading through the iMovie 11 instructions, I have yet to find any explanation that would help me capture any of this video into iMovie 11.

How do I download a video and convert it into an flv file? In previous versions, all I had to do was pick the resolution and it was done automaticlly. I use DVDFLICK to burn my downloaded videos to DVD.

In previous versions of Firefox, I was able to easily download and convert videos into .flv files. I was then able to burn DVDs of theses downloaded videos using DVDFLICK. I'm now unable to do this using Firefox6.0.2?
