Progressively slower renders and something else...

First... does anybody know why FCP renders my timeline over again when I "edit to tape"? I'm rendering everything in the timeline just before I put to tape... and my output settings match the timeline settings...
also, the renders seem to slow down at the 10-15% mark... if I stop and start the render again it'll go up to 10-15% in seconds...
No. I'm not rendering the same thing over and over again... and It's mostly motion stuff, with 2,3 sometimes 10 layers of video. I've monitored drive speed, processor usage... everything seems to run fine.
It's a well maintained and stable system.

This has been a weird thing about FCP since v1 or v2. I don't think we have ever gotten a satisfactory answer.
Michael's suggestion to export self-contained, reimport the new movie, and place it in your edit to tape process is pretty much what we've all been doing for several years. When Apple disabled timecode to the dsr-11, many of us started building entire sequences including slate, tone. bars, countdown.

You're probably talking about the handset with an arrow pointing up and to the right. That indicates an outgoing call.

Swapping between 801.2X and something else - vanished buttons

I use my computer at home and at uni, and must swap between two different servers and airport systems (although I'm not entirely sure of the technical stuff) and the buttons for doing this have disappeared. I took them for granted, so never really paid much attention to what they said, but I know they're gone!
I had to go into 'Internet Connect' then up the top there was a row of buttons, and I had to swap between 801.2X for uni and something else for home. These are the buttons that have disappeared.
Does anyone have any ideas where they might be? It makes it very hard to swap between the two now, and I never know if my internet will work properly.

If only life was that simple! I already have them set up as different locations. I was told when I first set up for the uni system that if it wasn't working, to change from VPN (home) and 802.1X (uni) in at the top of the 'Internet Connect' box. It's these buttons that have disappeared, along with 'Airport' and 'Summary', and the option for adding a new 802.1X connection is greyed out in the File menu (although the New VPN Conenction one isn't).
Thanks for trying, that would be a great idea, but it's already been done... Any more ideas?

work? If yes, put it in your .xinitrc or .xsession

Very slow Rendering and Exporting

I switched to Premiere CS6 from FCP 7 after FCPX came out and haven't looked back. In a lot of ways, it's much better for certain tasks.
In others, it's not. Initially playing back "red-lined" content worked fine and i was able to view the edit before I committed to render/export.
Now, I see every 10 frames or so and it skips and stutters. Rendering and exporting times have spiked dramatically over the past month
for some unknown reason. I have a small prod company and we're using Mac Pro's (8-Core) with min of 16GBs of RAM in each.
I know there are 101 factors that go into export time, I'm just wondering if anyone if encountering the same issues.
I just pieced together a 10-min video in FCP7, all ProRes files with minimal cutting and it exported in 2.5 minutes.
The same project on Premiere was telling me 3 hours. I don't get it.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Rendering times are not decided purely on the length of the video.
The type of effects you have added have more impact.
Also you cannot always trust the estimated time you are given.
Have you let it render for about an hour to see whether the estimate drops dramatically?

Two possibly unrelated questions - Hard Drive and something else.

Sorry I only have symptoms not specifics at this point. I have an intel core duo mac mini, running 10.5.6, with 4 gigs of ram. I have a couple of issues that may be unrelated: A possible Hard drive issue and another strange issue. I don't know if there are related but since I may have to go through the hassle of cracking open my mini I thought I would ask.
First issue when I stream video over the internet sometimes and only sometimes my machine will suddenly restart, no shutdown, no prompts, just instantaneously restart, other times it will stream hours of video without issue. This issue has plagued me since 10.4 and all subsequent upgrades.
Second issue is what I believe is a hard drive failure, but I'm not sure and I don't want to buy/replace it if that's not the issue. I updated to 10.5.6 a few months ago and was running with no issues although lately it has been getting slower. Last week my parents came over to watch "24" online so after working on my computer all morning I restarted my machine thinking it would stream better, upon restart it would get to the large apple with the spinning graphic and hang up, then about after a minute in it would simply power off. Confused I restarted with the same results. I tried this probably 10 times with the same result. Checked all the cables, etc. nothing. so next I booted into the Leopard Installer and ran disk utility. At first the hard drive didn't show up in the left column so I quit disk utility and launched startup disk, again no hard drive, then I re-launched disk utility - now it showed up. I ran repair disk since repair permissions was greyyed out. It came back with errors saying disk couldn't be repaired. Sorry the only error message I recall is a damaged catalog B-tree. So I restarted and for the first time in 10 hours my machine actually restarted and everything came back. From here I backed up everything important. Since then it has restarted 3 times will no issues, other than running a little slower than usual. So last night I ran Disk Warrior and receive the error message. " Could not rebuild due to a disk malfunction. A disk malfunction is a failure of or damage to any mechanical component of the disk device or any component connected to it. Since I had disk warrior in there I checked the hardware test option where it checks the S.M.A.R.T. something or another, sorry for the choice of words I've never done that, and it returned saying the drive was fine. So here I am a bit confused if it's the hard drive or another issue any ideas.

Could the unit simply be overheating? Have you vacuumed out the air vent that rns along the bottom edge of the mini?

Slow rendering and sluggish performance...

just built a new machine for cs3 prod studio. quad core 6850, 4 gig ram, xp sp2, 150 raptor boot, 2 500 wd re2 in raid 0 for data...get the picture, all good stuff. however I'm noticing very long rendering times as well as a slight sluggishness overall in pp cs3. I'm using the onboard raid from my asus p5k as well as the onboard sound. Is that the culprit? One of my other pc's is a qx6800 with same specs however I'm using an areca sata raid card for my data and creative sb x-fi elite for sound. btw I use cineform prospect hd for my editing. now I have a 15min video with very minimal editing, just a few dissolves basically, and it is taking 3 hours to render out the hd avi which takes 10 minutes on the other pc. Also when editing the pc seemed to lag when I performed edits. and when I'd play a clip it would start then the sound cuts out for 5 secs or so then comes back on. So what should I look for 1st? I'm thinking its the onboard raid sucking, but on a brand new install I'm sure there are some tweaks I'm missing. TIA

Lost my playlists and something else :o(

I have a MacBook Pro, with the HD partitioned into "Mac HD" and "Audio". I have a rather large music library on "Audio" that is linked to my Serato library.
Today, I noticed that some of my playlists were missing.
I found this online: iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - Apple Support and followed the instructions. I have now gone from well over 22000 songs, to just over 5000 tracks.
I noticed there are 2 iTunes libraries on my mac. One on "Mac HD" drive which appears to be about 30 gb, and another on the "Audio" drive (where I have set iTunes as the default drive and folder for my music).
The playlists I was looking for were not restored with the above process. However.... When I do a Spotlight search, I can find the name of the playlist I'm missing on a file called music.txt. How do I get all this back to normal?

I should add, when I started the process from the link above, iTunes started dumping audio onto my "Mac HD" drive... something I didn't want to do. I only have about 20gb free space there now

E2000 Opening NAT, and something else

Hi all. My title is pretty self-explanatory - I'm looking to open the NAT. The network in this house was set up by someone a bit more computer savvy; unfortunately he's no longer available and I can't get his input on it.
I'm trying to just follow a guide I found elsewhere. However, giving the IP address to a browser asks for a username and a password. I do not have these, and the defaults (admin as I understand) don't work. Solutions? I suspect the person who set it up used his own password, but that doesn't help now.
My other problem is something that could be anything. I'm a gamer and this is why I want to open the NAT. That said - I've NEVER had connection problems of any sort beyond not being able to use a mic on the Xbox sometimes, even with a moderate NAT. Lately, however, I can't go five minutes without crippling lag. Any ideas on that would be appreciated.

Okay Im having some serious issues, Ive followed the guide to the last word and every day i have to reset my router at least 10 times and repeat this process over and over until the darn thing works again. I cannot connect to my friends on live my connection is terrible and im always glitching out of games I am in S.O.S mode and this ship is quickly sinking and my frustration level is about to pop. If it helps im wired into my router but can also go wireless on my xbox 360.

I am editing HDV 1080p footage for output of the same encoding.
It recently dawned on me that my render and export processes might be significantly expedited by an increase in my RAM.

I have the same Mac Pro with 10GB RAM but I'm also disappointed. I'm rendering VOB files (ie only the audio needs fixing) and it's taking looong. The activity monitor says the processor is only using 9%.
However, when I use MPEG Streamclip for conversions I see that the activity monitor shows how it is using real raw power, unlike FCP.

Gmail fetch problem and something else

Hi,
I have set up on my iphone ver 2.2 the gmail imap acount through the iphone.
Fetch is set to 30 mins, i've disabled push bcz gmail does not support push anyway (apart from android so they say) and to reduce battery use.
Two issues I can't seem to solve:
My phone does not fetch while in sleep, if I dont touch it for more than 30 mins, I open it and it shows last updated in a time more than 30 mins. sometimes even 2 hours and no fetching.
Other thing - that may be the cause: when i wake up the phone from sleep - unlocking it, and going to the gmail and pressing update manually (due to the problem i described before) the iphone cant connect to the wifi on first time and gives me msg regarding unable to connect to 3G (I've disabled that throgh the iphone option and through my cellular company - I dont have a data plan).
After getting those cant connect to 3G msg's i press again and then it connects and download the emails - if there are new ones.
I have a wireless router that i configured with my iphone - safari doesn't seem to have problem connecting from sleep right away.
Any suggestions?

I can already state that the problem still exits, I already got the message 'no cellular data available...' followed by 'cannot connect to smtp.gmail...
Which I think it may be the issue causing the problem of periodically fetch. (Since it can't connect to the server for some reason).
Any ideas?

Venture Siggy with Chip Design and Something Else

I have never had a Venture before this one that came today and I love the design! It is very slick. I dont know if they recently revamped the design, but they did a nice job. Also, Cap one now has the option to consolidate your credit lines in your online account management into 1 card if you so choose and it says it will take less than 5 minutes! I am thinking of combining my 2 QS's and the Venture Siggy all to the Venture Siggy since I already use my Cash Rewards for rewards and have SD'd my 2 QS's. I knew you could combine limits before, but wasnt sure if there was an option to do this yourself in your online account access. Thoughts?

MBP SLOW Boot (and everything else)

Suddenly, my MBP takes a VERY long time to boot (as in over an hour) and when it does everything is running very slowly in terms of launching (cursor motions, window pane movements all seam normal)...
It does not matter if I log on as primary or as a guest, the effect is the same.
And ideas before I go to the genius bar?
I am running 10.5.4 and all is updated as of last week prior to this happening.

IMHO you should boot from the install media and repair the disk. It sounds like you may have file corruption.
You are very near limit on free space. It would probably be good to look at doing some housecleaning and get rid of any files you don't need.

Motion in FCPX - click lag, hanging, tortuously slow rendering

Hello Colleagues,
I have 2 iMacs of different generations, both up-to-spec and up-to-date on OS, FCP, and Motion.
I am experiencing very poor performance when using Motion "generator" graphics: lag, hanging, slow renders, and sometimes even crashing.
I have verified folder permissions, verified fonts, eliminated all converted events/libraries from pre-10.1 - pretty much everything except uninstalling, trashing prefs, and reinstalling fresh.
Still, FCP seems to be FIGHTING ITSELF, with iStat showing that more than half of CPU effort is being used by "system" instead of "user" at any given moment (when Motion assets are present and enabled).
The performance is far poorer than it ever was on FCP7 with Motion 4, and it is far worse than FCP10.0.x with Motion 5 (one of my machines was previously used with FCP7, however, the newer one has been FCPX since its unboxing day in early 2013).
Does anyone have any suggestions for the next step in troubleshooting this problem?

Yay it's Luis and Russ! Hello colleagues!
Luis: I tink I posted a link to one of the troublesome assets for you, but I limped through the completion of that project by keeping the inspector closed. I still suffered lots o click-lag, spinny balls, and, at the end, an overnight render, but I got through. This was on a 90minute show choir concert that had about 12x 8 second lower 3rds, and about 3 minutes of full screen titles, rolls, and credits. All of the FCP generator assets were made by me from scratch in Motion5. The current post relates to a similar problem, but on a different machine with different assets. The current complaint is from my slightly older iMac (lower power than the new one but still quite capable when using the former versions of this software), and the generators came from Motion projects which were originally created in Motion4. So unless there is something wrong with my practice in using FCPX generators, something in common across the 4 or 5 projects where I have experienced similar problems, I think that a corrupt template is an unlikely explanation.
Russ: I run my systems stock - that is to say that the only 3rd party plugins I have installed are the Canon EOS and XF plugins I use for ingesting media. I don't have any plugins related to MoGraph, editing, rendering, or memory management. These are custom generators that I am creating, chasing the "template" functionality I used to enjoy between Motion and FCP7. So yes, user generated custom generators - and I have had similar problems with several batches of varying complexity and varying origin.
For now I will just have to adapt, observe, and troubleshoot. I have a sneaky feeling that I am doing something wrong in the way I am setting up the motion projects for publication, but I will surely announce it loudly if I learn anything new.
