Prohibitory Sign and unable to copy items

I restarted my Mac tonight and was presented with the Prohibitory Sign. I was able to reboot using a backup drive I have and also able to see the contents of my Mac.
Before I do an Archive and Install, which unfortunately looks like the only option available I wanted to backup some stuff I've been working on since I last backed up (around 5 days ago)
The thing is when I try to copy items from my Mac to the Backup drive it tries to copy and then I get the error: The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
I seem to be able to copy items from the Backup drive to my Mac though.
Any ideas and help would be much appreciated. It's getting late now and my mind is starting to go so I think I'll leave it until the morning now in case I do something stupid!

I had to take my MBP to the Apple Repair Centre who diagnosed the fault as a blown HD. They replaced it and all works well now.

• Mavericks install freezes with prohibitory sign and spinning wheel

I tried to update my MacMini from Lion to Mavericks. Everything went ok until after restart. On gray screen, Apple logo showed up for a while with spinning wheel which soon turned into prohibitory sign and spinning wheel. And this is where it stayed for hours and hours. Luckily I was able to recover back to Lion. I tried to update for another time but with exactly same results. Lion runs just fine with no problems but it would be nice to update if it is possible. Is anyone else out there having this same issue?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Did you check that all your apps are compatible with OS X Mavericks?
What I recommend you to do is to get a USB drive or DVD and copy the OS X Mavericks installer to it by using Lion Diskmaker > http://liondiskmaker.com Also, make a backup of your data with Time Machine.
Then, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting up and select your DVD or USB drive. Open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive, and finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. Disconnect all peripherals from your computer except the mouse, the keyboard and the USB drive or DVD, and see if OS X Mavericks is installed correctly.
After reinstalling Mavericks, you will be able to restore the backup you made

• Help replaced a kext file and now I get a Prohibitory Sign and cant startup

I replaced my iovideo family.kext file trying to fix my non working dvi output. I replaced it with one from my mbp 15 because that one worked fine now I cant start up my mbp17 I get the Prohibitory Sign???

If you kept a copy of the original file, you can use the terminal to copy it back.
You should be able to boot into the Leopard DVD using the "C" on boot and get into the single user mode to do this.
If you have a TM backup, you can boot into the Leopard DVD and restore the entire OS from the backup.

• Ran AHT_All passed. Still have prohibitory sign and issues upon boot up.

I have done ALL the tests. I have done the AHT, I have booted up from the OSX disk and so on but my Mac either hangs on the radian circle, continues on to the prohibitory sign. Should I re-install OSX. I have everything I need backed-up. What can I expect if I re-install OSX? Should I upgrade operating system?
Thanks in advance.

Here's what I'd try...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to get a good install.

• Missing files on external hard drive and unable to delete items in trash

When my external hard drive is connected I am unable to eject it because it says it is in use. I have tried shutting every program, but the message still occurs. I have also noticed that I can't empty my trash can when the external hard drive is connected, and that it appears empty when it is ejected. There are also missing folders on the drive. I am able to see the timemachine backup folder, but I can't open it properly to access the data.

With the External HD connected to the AEBS, I went to File -> New -> Folder and named the folder. I had done this a few times, as well as created a few new ones using Picasa and cutting/pasting them into the appropriate folder. I did that a few times. Then one more time I went to File -> New -> Folder on the EHD (not Picasa), named it and hit enter. I got a message saying can't do it because folder doesn't exist. Properties showed correct amount of GB used/remaining. so I know it's there. Latrer I connected directly to PC and folders were there and could be manipulated. I tried reconnecting EHD to USB hub in AEBS and it won't show up as a drive under Computer, but under Network -> <AEBS name> -> drive name.

• Satellite M30-107: I/O error and unable to copy data

I am trying to back up my data into blank dvds and i have "Draq n drop" software to do that as well as other sorts. Insert blank dvd-R and dvd+R and nothing happens. It doesn't seem to recognise them.
When i try to open it from the dvd icon this message appears sometimes " The request cannot be performed because of an I/O device error. I have a super multi drive which should read all sort of cd's and dvd's but something is wrong. I went to my computer and double clicked the icon and under the recording tab i clicked "enable cd recording on this drive" i then dragged folders into the dvd and it seemed to have worked, when i inserted the dvd afterwards it does not let me open it....
Could somebody help me with this please? i am not too good with computers and i've had this one for two years and it is the first time i am trying to back up my files and i cannot do it.
Thanks very much for you time.
JC

Hi
The drag & drop is not bad bud I would recommend using the "Nero burning rom" software to burn the DVD.
This software supports many burning options and allows you to burn the medium with best performance.
Additional you should know that the drive doesn't support all CD or DVD from all manufacturers.
In the user manual you will find a list of compatible and supported CD DVD manufacturers.
But please don't be confused about the unknown names like i.e Mitsubishi.
These are the manufacturers and not vendors like TDK. Don't mix manufacturer and vendor!
best regards

• Bug while copying items on a page.

When I create a new page item via copying from existing page item it fails with the below error code, if there is > or < character in the source of the existing item.Error Source contains <, > or " which are invalid characters. It works fine if I create new item using wizard and then have the same source. I use div tags in the source of my display only items.
If this is a bug, can we get it fixed in the upcoming release.
Thanks,
Manish

Hi Manish and Scott,
I also concur and have filed bug #14724684. Specifically this appears to occur when the 'Source' value contains either <,> or ", and only when copying items as you say. I'm afraid this will not be fixed for 4.2, but we will aim to fix it for the first patch set. Interestingly, the item does still get copied despite the error, (which I'm sure you noticed anyway), but just thought I'd mention it in case that's of use to you or others as the error won't stop you from copying items containing these characters in their source.
And yes, Scott I agree with the DA copy wizard and have made a note to improve this for our next release. Thanks for mentioning it.
Regards,
Anthony.

• Prohibitory Sign After Login - Deleted Ubuntu Partitions

I booted into recovery to delete my Ubuntu partitions. After doing that I restarted then went back to go login to OS X but when I login to my account it shows the prohibitory sign and the loading symbol. I tried booting back into recovery to repair the disk, but it wouldn't let me mount the drive to do anything. I never touched my Mac OS X partition so my files should all be there. I booted into Ubuntu through a USB to see if I could repair the disk but it says it's "unknown" and it's not showing it as the primary anymore. Also when I deleted the Ubuntu partitions, "Recovery HD" was made. How can I get back into Mac OS X?

My guess is that you somehow managed to hose the GPT partition scheme info on the drive. Someone else may have a better suggestion but I think you should be able to use Internet Recovery (if you have a broadband Internet connection) to reformat the drive & then reinstall OS X to recover from this. Of course, reformatting the drive will erase everything on it, so I hope you have good backups!
Thanks for the suggestion! I created a new partition with the unallocated space, then installed OS X on it then used disk recovery programs to see if I could recover anything and I couldn't. So now I'm at : How do I repartition my new main volume?

• 10.5.6 install fails with Prohibitory sign

Since the 10.5.6 update has come out, I've tried multiple times to upgrade to it. All fail after reboot with the Prohibitory sign (and the progress wheel below that still spinning).
I tried upgrading from 10.5.5 and then restored from my Time Capsule three times. I tried downloading the 10.5.6 combo update separately, same results. And after calling Apple support, who told me to rebuild the machine from the install disk, I tried from 10.5.1, same results. Apple support basically said "If you get that symbol and your disks are ok, then you're screwed." My disks are totally fine and the files are all there. Disks have been verified and permissions repaired. I've read through every possible failure scenario on every message board and have found nothing that helps. This is very frustrating.
Only two things I can think of that would contribute:
- I have a software RAID config with 2 drives, standard striped config
- I use Parallels 4.0
Any ideas? Thanks.

Lose the RAID and lose the Parallels and see what happens. Install Leopard on a bare, clean machine. If it does not install, then call for a genius appointment.

• Prohibitory sign on start up.

When starting up my MacBook, it boots to a white screen with a prohibitory sign (circle with a cross through it). I looked up some suggestions, but have not had luck yet. They were also older support posts (2010, etc).
My computer is a MacBook Pro from about 2009. It has the most recent Yosemite OS X.

Good Morning Mere-Glim,

My Mac OS Lion 10.7 FileVaulted HD does not boot, prohibitory sign, stop sign appears some minutes after boot starts. Disk Utility repair shows four error messages:
Unable to bootstrap transaction group 2517: inconsistent crosscheck
No valid commit checkpoint found
The volume xxxxxxxxxxxxxx(here it shows physical volume number) was found corrupt and can not be repaired.

(the same with 2518, 2519 and 2520 transaction group)
I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
Best of luck

• MacBook doesnt boot. It shows Apple logo and spinning wheel. Soon it wont go beyond prohibitory sign with spinning wheel

I have a MacBook (Late 2008 edition) having Mac OS X 10.6.8 SnowLeopard OS installed (2 X 512GB RAM, 160 HDD). I copied some mp3 into iTunes library and soon the process got stucked. MacBook was not accepting any command/it seemed to got hanged. Carelessly, I switched the MacBook OFF by pressing the Power button. Now, when it began to boot again, all I hear was some clicking sound from the MacBook (seems HardDrive failure because the sounds seems to be from HardDrive). After few seconds, It showed flashing folder with question mark and it wont go beyond that.
Steps I tried:
1. Resetting NVRAM, PVRAM and SMC.
2. Booting in safe mode.
3. To boot from install DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard).
4. Holding down 'option' button while booting. It shows the "Mac OS X Install DVD" icon but as I click it and press return, it again shows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will now remain for ever and ever.
5. I bought a new 500 GB HardDrive and replaced the old one with this. Now trying to boot with DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard) it again hows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will remain for ever.
Any suggestions to overcome this problem will be highly appreciated and I'll be very grateful for all your help.
Thanking You.

Hi julenawang,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook has a startup issue and you aren't able to reinstall Mac OS X on a new hard disk. The article linked below has a lot of great information and suggestions that will resolve most issues like the one you described.

• Material exchane ,copy pricing and conditions from main item to sub item.

Hi All,
We are using parts exchange/interchangeability in the transaction ME22N,
While using ME22N we are exchanging main item with interchangeable part and while doing so we want to copy pricing and conditions from main item to sub item.
But its not happening.
As per sap help its possible, details describe below.
http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/en/c2/0a5288b77d11d3bcce00105ab03aee/content.htm
Price Determination by Copying from Main Item
In the case of price determination by copying from the main item, the net price of the originally ordered part is still used for the superseding part in a part exchange.
The system copies all conditions from the main item to all sub-items and takes into account the order quantity for the main item when calculating scale prices. It does not take into account the conditions and scale prices that exist for the interchangeable part.
You cannot change the conditions, which have been copied from the main item, at sub-item level. It is possible, however, to define additional conditions for each sub-item.
Prerequisites
A calculation schema, which can be altered on an individual basis in Customizing, has been supplied for the price determination.
In the vendor master record, you have set the schema group 09 (interchangeable material).
But in customizing I didnu2019t find value 09 for schema group .
Can any buddy through some light on missing pieces which need to be set?
Thanks

Hi,
Can you check few more things and tell me?
- In this exit, does XVBPA and XVBAP contains all the line items. ( main and sub items ).
- In Sales order creation time, do these table have VBELN populated when this exit triggers.
- If you modify XVBPA or XVBAP in this exit, do they get overwritten after that.
Try this code. See if it works. Let me know if you still have a problem.
DATA: wa_hvbpa LIKE vbpa,
wa_xvbpa like vbpa.
CLEAR: wa_hvbpa, wa_xvbpa.
* check if HVBAP and VBAP line items are not same
IF vbap-posnr <> hvbap-posnr.
* read the ****-to partner from main-item
READ TABLE xvbpa INTO wa_hvbpa WITH KEY posnr = hvbap-posnr
parvw = 'WE'.
IF sy-subrc = 0.
* read the line item data for sub-item based on main item
READ TABLE xvbap WITH KEY posnr = vbap-posnr
uepos = hvbap-posnr.
* See if current line is the child of that BoM parent
IF sy-subrc = 0.
MOVE wa_xvbpa-kunnr TO xvbpa-kunnr.
MOVE xvbap-vbeln TO wa_xvbpa-vbeln.
MOVE xvbap-posnr TO wa_xvbpa-posnr.
MOVE 'WE' TO wa_xvbpa-parvw.
MODIFY vbpa FROM wa_xvbpa.
ENDIF.
ENDIF.
ENDIF.
