Project Archive won't playback on iMovie HD

Hi,
I made a backup project on dvd using "Burn a project to disk" ( file size 4GB ). When I tried to open this in iMovie HD, I got the message "The project could not be opened, because the disk is full, the project is locked, or the folder permissions are incorrect." Obviously the disk isn't full ( I tested it again using afile size of 100MB - same message ). I used Disk Utility to "verify disk" - passed. "Verify disk permissions" was greyed out. Any ideas?

Hi Lauren,
You cannot open the project directly from the DVD. You need to copy the archived project from the DVD back onto your hard drive, and open from there.

  • Project still won't open in imovie 09'

I have imovie 09' running on an imac with OS X and have a project that I have been working on for six month which is 99.9% complete but now imovie will not open the project.  When I select it I just get the rainbow wheel and have to force imovie to quit.  The other projects that I have all work just fine, I can open, edit, and share them.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I would appreciate any thoughts as I am totally frustrated and do not want to lose this project and all the work that went into it.  Please help.  Thanks.

If the file is MPEG2, you need a plugin for Quicktime called the Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Component, which costs $20 at the online Apple Store. You might also want to get MPEG Streamclip (which is free).
Use MPEG Streamclip (with MPEG2 Playback Component installed on your system) to convert these files to something iMovie can edit, such as DV, Apple Intermediate Codec, or h.264.

  • Older iMovies won't playback in iMovie 4

I have a few movies, probably made in Version 2 or 3, that I want to edit a bit a burn again. I now have iMovie4 on my iMac.
The movies open fine and individual clips play fine. But the edited movie won't really play back at all. The sound goes, but even that stutters a bit. Worse, the video really doesn't move at all. It is typically the first frame just frozen there, updating once every 10 - 15 seconds.
I ran the disk verify and utility just now and no change.
    Any advice?
    Tim.

  • Problems using projects created in older versions of iMovie

I have a few projects created in older versions of iMovie, as far back as version 2 as well as more recent versions. Most of those projects are finished and I want to burn them to DVD again, but a couple of them could bear a little touch up editing. These projects are precious movies of our kids and hard to replace. Although I could probably find the original video, I put many hours of work into creating these projects.
In any case, when I open up an old project, I get a warning that goes something like this: "The project was saved with an older version of iMovie. Opening it in this version will cause it to be upgraded, which will make it unreadable by older versions. Are you sure you want to open it?"
I clicked okay, thinking "sure, I don't need to play it in an older version. I have iMovie HD."
However, now when I play my old iMovie project, there are a few problems. For example, one original movie's title was over black. When I play the movie, I get a completely white screen and no title. Also, in another movie, when viewing the movie in full screen, the transitions were replaced by a black screen (although the transitions were there when I viewed the movie in the iMovie window). Basically, there are problems cropping up here and there.
I need to do some more experimenting with all this to more fully understand how many problems there are. I don't know if the projects I opened in iMovie HD are now "broken" since I "upgraded" them with iMovie HD (when prompted to save the project's changes when quitting, I said NO, don't save changes).
I don't know if I should use older versions of iMovie to view and burn to DVD these projects. (I still have iMovie 2 and 3, but not 4 or 5. I don't know if older versions would even work on my Quad G5 with OS 10.4.7.) I also don't know if the older versions of iMovie would work with the current version of iDVD. How can I tell which version of iMovie was originally used for a given project? How can I find iMovie 4 or 5 if I need it?
I also wonder if projects I make with iMovie HD can be opened by future versions of iMovie, or if I should export them as Quicktime or something to be safe.
As I start to look into this further, I would appreciate any comments, suggestions, and experiences that you may be able to offer. I need to get these movies back to their former selves, when they looked good!

(when prompted to save the project's changes when
quitting, I said NO, don't save changes).
Excellent! That should leave you in pretty good shape. More below.
I don't know if I should use older versions of iMovie
to view and burn to DVD these projects. (I still have
    iMovie 2 and 3, but not 4 or 5. I don't know if older
versions would even work on my Quad G5 with OS
    10.4.7.)
The old versions of iMovie will run just fine in today's OSX. (But not iMovie 2 if it was the version that ran in Classic instead of Mac OSX.)
I run versions 2,3,4,5 and 6 today. Problems are minimal.
I also don't know if the older versions of
iMovie would work with the current version of iDVD.
That's not a problem unless your old iMovie projects contain chapters. If you tell iMovie 3 to create a new iDVD project, it might not work. You might not be able to transfer the chapter information to the newer version of iDVD.
(I just tested iMovie 3 to iDVD 6 and everything worked just fine.)
Except for iMovie 2, all old versions of iMovie stored a small QuickTime reference movie in the project folder. If you can't get an old version of iMovie to play nice with iDVD, drag that movie into the iDVD window.
How can I tell which version of iMovie was originally
    used for a given project?
Drop the project file (discussed below) onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock. The version of iMovie that last saved the project is shown in the first few lines of the project file.
iMovie 5 used an entirely different project file format, the pList format. The top of the project file will look like this in TextEdit:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
How can I find iMovie 4 or
    5 if I need it?
    eBay?
I also wonder if projects I make with iMovie HD can
be opened by future versions of iMovie, or if I
should export them as Quicktime or something to be
    safe.
We can never assume any new version of iMovie will be able to understand all features of a older project. It's always smart to make a backup.
There can be problems Apple can't anticipate. There may be third-party software used to create titles, transitions and special effects, plug-ins not installed with the new version or (more often, incompatible). The fonts installed on our Mac may have changed too. There's lots of features that can't be anticipated. I've never had a problem converting projects, but I never use third-party add-ons and special fonts.
As I start to look into this further, I would
appreciate any comments, suggestions, and experiences
that you may be able to offer. I need to get these
movies back to their former selves, when they looked
    good!
My guess is it should be possible to restore the projects back to their original state.
Note that when imovie 5/6 converts an older project, it does NOT create a true iMovie HD project. Instead of creating an iMovie package, it retains the project FOLDER format. It places new iMovie HD elements inside the old project folder instead of converting it to a package.
When converting the project it changes the old project file name to "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project", then creates a NEW project file with the plist format, having the name "Sample Project Name.iMovieProj". (There may NOT be the .iMovieProj extension.) When you save the new project, it adds a new project file "Sample Project Name.~iMovieProj". Note the tilde. The tilde file is a backup of the project file as it was when last saved in iMovie HD.
For our purposes, ignore the iMovie HD project files. We'll use the file ".iMovie2Project" to restore the project. (The extension is the same for all old versions of iMovie, not just iMovie 2.)
    • In the Finder, Duplicate the entire project folder. Work on the copy.
    • Open the project folder in the Finder.
    • Discard the "Cache" folder, the "Shared Movies" folder, the "Audio Waveforms" folder and the two iMovie HD project files. (Some of those items may not yet exist yet because you didn't save the converted project.)
    • Drop the "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project" file onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock to get the version. Close it.
    • Remove the ".iMovie2Project" extension, if you want.
    • Launch that version of iMovie. Drop the "Sample Project Name.iMovie2Project" file icon on the iMovie icon in the Dock. With luck, the project should open normally. It's possible any third-party plug-ins used to create the project may not be available. If they aren't available, there might still be problems.
    • Move your unconverted projects to folders that say which version of iMovie created them. To open them in the future, drop the project icon on the appropriate version of iMovie.
If all this fails, there is another way to do the editing you want. That is to import the project.mov file that's inside the converted project folder to a new iMovie HD project. That will deliver the video and audio of the original project as a single clip. Use that to re-edit the project. The name of the movie is "Sample Project Name.mov".
(The movie is a QuickTime reference movie, with no video and audio of its own, just pointers to the files in the Media folder. So long as the Media folder hasn't changed, it can play the original project as last saved.)
Importing the project.mov won't work with iMovie 2 projects, however, for iMovie 2 didn't store a project.mov file in the project folder.
Even if you end up importing the project.mov, you still may want to "unconvert" the project as described above.
Hope I haven't skipped a step. Let me know if you bump your head on something.

The performance fixes is a biggy for me, though the other missing
stuff I use makes me have to use both versions for various things:
"but they seem to be committed to another release/version."
Well ... now that's the rub. I would actually welcome this intermediate version to play with (even with the cost of upgrading) if I could rely on it to be finalized into 6.0, full featured, without it taking as long as it has to Upgrade from AA3.0. I would say it was a VERY smart move to give us a preview of 6.0, if I felt in, say, six months they would provide us the fully functional update. But, HOW many years has it been. I felt screwed over while they played around with Sound Booth.
I was with you for a minute in most of what you said, until your credibility went down a couple notches with me on the statement trivializing midi functionality. I though that was a very clueless statement:
"but I have no need for a midi controller and if I want a drummer to keep perfect time I'll get a drum machine."
It does make some of your other statements suspect, tho I won't take it as far as therealdobro's "what's your stake" question.

  • Clips suddenly won't play in iMovie

I have several projects I'm working on in iMovie. All of a sudden some of the clips that I'm using to create my projects won't play in iMovie any longer. When the project gets to the portion of the video where that clip is, the video freezes until the next "good" clip comes up in the timeline. All the while the music still plays over the frozen video. Also, the clips are taken from longer video clips that still play in iMovie. For example, in one case a video clip is 11 seconds long and I'm only taking the first 4 seconds. It is these 4 seconds that won't play. The rest of the clip plays fine if I bring it into the project but the first 4 seconds that I originally had in my project won't play no matter what I do. Thus I know it is not the format of the clips. Also, the clips still play fine in QuickTime, just not in iMovie.
I've tried suggestions such as deleting the iMovie preferences file (plist file), taking the movies out of the Movie folder, restarting iMovie, closing iMovie, moving my projects back to the Movies folder, and re-opening the projects to no avail.
    I'm using
    Mac Book with OS 10.6.4
    iMovie 8.0.6 (821)
    Quick Time 10.0 (114)

I've got a problem with premiere, when i start it, the source monitor is white and it wont playback my project. And after a couple of seconds premiere is not responding anymore and quits. I've tried to close the source monitor but still won't playback...
Starting a new project is not solving te problem.

    Any ideas???

    Mehmet,
The "white screen" is a classic result of an obsolete video driver.
Let's get that one out of the way first. What is the make/model of your video card?
What is the number/date of the installed video driver?
Is that the latest driver FROM the mfgr's. Web site, say nVidia, or ATI/AMD? Do not rely on the OS, or any utility to tell you if you have the latest driver - check that out for yourself.
    Good luck,

Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project in iMovie? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. Whenever I add audio or song it covers the whole project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!

Thank you for your reply Karsten but unfortunately this didn't help me so far. Or maybe I'm missing something?
First the link is a tutorial for iMovie on a Mac. I'm using iMovie on iPad so the steps are inapplicable.
Second it is only possible for me to manipulate the end part of the sound clip to whichever duration I want. But I can't do the same with the 'beginning' of the sound clip.
I simply want to place some photos in the beginning of my video with no sound in the background then after like 2 secs I want to start the music clip. For some reason that is not possible! Cause every time I drop the music clip unto my project timeline it automatically place it self along with the first frame in the project! And consequently the photos and music are forced to start together.
    Hope I'm making sense...

  • How do I fix a project that won't open?

I have a few Final Cut Pro X projects that won't appear in the Project Library.
Here's a link to the file, could someone try opening it on there system to see if it works for them?
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/nswzlfw285ys936/CurrentVersion.fcpproject
    I'm on FCP X 10.0.9 running on OS X 10.8.5.
    A few facts:
I beleive the .fcpproject file is corrupt somehow.
I have projects named "Draw_01" through "Draw_13", but all the projects after "Draw_10" don't show up.
Since each new project began as a duplicate of the last, I believe that some sort of corruption must have happened when I created Draw_11.
I'm pretty sure that it's not related to the names themselves since I played around with renaming working and non-working projects with no change.
Each time FCP X opens now, it asks to update projects to the latest version. I say Okay and yet next time I open the program it asks again.
I see no error messages. I only notice that the projects in question don't show up.
The Old Version folder on the problem projects are filled with over 126 files wheras the working projects only have 4 or 5.
Almost all of those 126 Old Versions files are the same size (8.1 MB) with the same date (Oct 10, 2012 9:11 PM).
And a new one is created every time FCP opens up and tries to update the version of said project. And it has the same date and size.
I've tried removing everything in the project folder and leaving only the .fcpproject file, to no avail.

Yes, I tried the Backup and I tried different projects from the Old Versions folder, to no avail.
As long as the file was the same size (8.1 MB) and therefore probably the same content, it wouldn't open. I tried an earlier project from the Old Versions folder that was smaller and it successfully opened. But of course it was missing most of the changes to the edit.
Obviously, at one point these all worked in a previous version of of FCP X, but along the way, maybe as it got converted by FCP for new versions, something got corrupted.

  • Saving projects on external hard drive in imovie

I am not really sure how to phrase this question, but here is what I am trying to work on. I have a project I am currently making a large project in idvd. I have 4 projects completed in imovie that will go on it and I have 1 more that will be completed shortly. My problem, is I am running low on my hard drive space. Is there a way for me to save the projects I have worked on in imovie after I have shared the movie to media browser AND then delete the actual movie clips in imovie to free up space? I am trying to figure out a way so I can include all of these 5 projects on the same idvd project, but need to delete movie clips in imovie... help!
Also, When I drag and drop 1 movie clip up into a new project, it takes FOREVER to load it before I can perform any other function in imovie. Usually about 30-60 seconds, per movie clip. What is wrong?
    Thanks,

I had the same problem and bought an external hard disk (Iomega MacCompanion, 2 TB, Firewire). All my footage is placed on this external HD and in iMovie I only work with this external HD. Works fine.
But you can also work from your internal HD in iMovie to the external HD. IMovie "sees" the external HD.

  • Where is my project archive?

I am trying to share my Final Cut Pro X project with my co-worker.  I am able to select "Duplicate Project", which simply makes a copy of the same project back into my Library.
From watching several tutorials, I know I am supposed to be able to click "Duplicate Project" and a promp is supposed to ask me whether I want to duplicate the entire Library, or just the Project. But I can't get that promp to appear. Right-clicking on the project and choosing "duplicate project" simply makes a copy of the project inside my library. But what if I want to send that project to my co-worker? And what if I want to duplicate the entire Library and share that with my coworker as well?
The tutorial also shows a button on the bottom left of the screen that looks like a back arrow with a film reel inside of it. I believe it's supposed to be the Project Archive, from which I am also supposed to be able to duplicate projects.
But the Project Archive button does not exist in my copy of FCP X, and I can't get it to show up. It's almost like I'm running a different version of the program than the one in the tutorial. What am I missing??? I am running version 10.1.1 of FCP X, which I purchased through the App Store.

Since it's external media, does that mean I have to copy it manually through the Finder, as opposed to duplicating the Library from within FCP?
No, when you copy the library to the other drive it will copy with symlinks to the original location. You then need to consolidate the new library in the new location to copy the media into the new library. This will not move the media; it will copy it from one drive to the other, just the files that are used in the project of course. If you want to get them out on the new library onto a new external location on the other drive, you can consolidate again and this time select to move the files into a new exetrnal location on the new drive, which will replace the files inside the new library with symlinks to the new external location. Make sense? Everything can be done and should be done from inside FCP.
