Project duration error requiring DVD+RDL disc

When going to burn a project, I encountered a project duration error. It read: "Your project is too large for a single-layer disc. Insert a double-layer disc." So I ran out and picked up a stack of DVD+RDLs, came back, and popped one into my SuperDrive. Alas, I am still receiving the same error message. Ideas anyone? (The DVD+RDLs are the Memorex brand.)

Did you tell iDvd you are now using DL Media as opposed to SL? (This is one item the app doesn't yet detect on it's own).
Btw .... if you are still having issues even after addressing the correct settings, then you may wish to consider trying Verbatim or Maxell as opposed to Memorex. The 2 former brands are a bit more reliable on most macs than Memorex.

  • I'm trying to burn a 6.75GB video file onto an 8.5GB blank DVD+RDL disc and being told the disc is too small. Why?

This occurs whether I use an alias or the original file to burn the disc, and whether I use a burn file or try to burn directly to disc from the Finder.
I get the same result on both my MacBookPro and my MacBook Air, each running Snow Leopard OS 10.6.8.  Each has about 100GB of free space on its HD/SSD.  Also with two brands of discs, Memorex and Verbatim.
Several months ago, I replicated the same video file on an 8.5GB DVD+RDL disc using the MBP, with no problem.  Now this.
The only thing new is a reinstall of SL 10.6.8 I did on my Air after tiring of Lion's inadequacies.  But the MBP has only run Snow Leopard, never Lion.  I wouldn't think that would make a difference.
Your advice is welcome.  Happy Holidays.

I have been using an free app called BURN to do my disk burning.  Give it a try.  Works great.

  • "Project Duration" error when burning

I have a 2x Superdrive in an iMac G4 800Mhz, and I am using iDVD (ver. 5.0.1) to burn a iMovie HD (ver. 5.0.2) file to a 2x DVD. When I hit the "burn" button in iDVD, I get the following error message:
"Your project exceeds the maximum allowed content duration. You will not be able to burn your DVD while your Encoder Setting is Best Performance. This can be changed in your iDVD Preferences."
First of all, my project is only 29 minutes long. So, the project duration should not be an issue. Second, when I go into the iDVD Preferences and change the Encoder Setting from Best Performance to Best Quality (as the error message suggests), I am able to begin the burning process, but I eventually get this error message:
    "Error during rendering/encoding."
I have 21 GB (out of 60 GB) of free space on my internal HD, and I have 29 GB (out of 60 GB) of free space on my external HD. The external HD is where my iMovie HD file is located, as well as my iDVD project.
Can anyone help me burn this to DVD?

I can think of two factors that might lead to this problem. the first is that, since your project length is under an hour, iDVD will probably try encoding it using "Best Performance" settings. Check Preferences>General>Encoder Settings to see if this is the case. A quick fix might be to simply change this to "Best Quality" instead, which accomodates longer DVDs.
As for how a 29 minute DVD can exceed the maximum duration of a disc, there is a problem a few people have had with transferring iMovie projects into iDVD (myself included) where the project length mysteriously doubles in iDVD. Annoying for small projects like yours but deadly for those exceeding 1 1/2 hours.
...check your status tab and confirm that your project is indeed 29 minutes still and not something like 58. if your footage has in fact doubled in length please see this post:

  • Project Duration error message when loading short iDVD 5 project in iDVD 6

My iDVD 5 project is very short - a total of about 7 minutes (including video and an audio loop for the menu). The video clips were exported as DV NTSC non-self-contained quicktimes from Final Cut Pro.
When I attempt to load the project into iDVD 6, I get the following error message:
    Project duration
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn this project, remove some content.
Twirling down the triangle for more info gives:
    Project:
    - total project duration: -2147483648:-2147483648 minutes
    - total project capacity: 429496729 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)
Also, trying to open the Project Info window crashes iDVD.
I haven't attempted burning, but I'm pretty sure it'd be a waste of a DVD.
My only thought is that iDVD 6 somehow is misreading the non-self-contained quicktimes, but I've never had an issue with them before, and it'd be a drag to redo all my projects with space-hogging self-contained versions.

Many people had trouble opening iDVD 5 projects in iDVD 6 when it first came out. My one iDVD 5 wouldn't open at all.

  • "Project Duration" error -- preference does not affect message

"Project duration: Your project exceeds the maxiumum project duration. To burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in iDVD preferences to Best Quality."
but it doesn't matter if it's set to Best Quality or not. i still get the error message and can't burn my DVD.

    Hi.
Had he same problem. Changing the setting in the preference did not help. What solved my problem was to open project info (Menu -> Project -> Project Info , or Apple - I) and change the setting there. It immediatly readjusted (and also had to re encode from beginning of course).
Hope this helps you as well.

  • Project duration error

    hi all,
i downloaded the french hack to allow idvd to see my dl burner and can now access dl under the project info. unfortunately, my project is weighing in at 11.7 gig.
in toast, if the image is to large, it compresses the image just before the burn to what ever available space is on the disc. is there anything that i can do to decrease the project size in idvd? i even tried saving as an image to burn with something else but i get the same error.
i'm desperately trying to get this project burned onto an anamorphic dvd (plays letterboxed on a standard tv and widescreen on a 16x9 tv) but seem to be hitting a roadblock.
    any help is appreciated

  • Drive error with DVD-DL discs

I just bought a case of TDK DVD-DL's and so far on two discs it has burned so far but stopped with this error:
    The drive reported an error
    Sense Key = Medium Key
    Sense Code = 0x0C
    Write Error
Is this a faulty drive or faulty media, I tried using the built in burner and Toast.

    Hi-
Media errors are commonly due to incompatible or poorly made media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
As far as the drive goes, if other media burns properly, I would try a different brand of DL discs.
Taiyo Yuden is recognized as one of the top, quality disc makers.
    Verbatim is also a winner.
Slowing the burn, burning after a restart of the machine, and using a hard drive with ample free space are also ways to improve burn performance/reliability.
It is also possible that a firmware update for the optical drive could help the problem.
Firmware updates typically address media compatibility.

  • No DLT Machine? Writing a DL project to 2 DVD-R discs as DDP images

There is yet another way to get a DL project to the factory if you do not have a DLT machine, and do not have access to DL discs in the correct format.
Write the DDP images to 2 single layer discs instead!
This requires the use of GEAR Pro Mastering Edition again, and is incredibly easy to do.
What you need to do here is follow the original guides in the FAQ sections for setting the Layer Break manually, but instead of writing the project to DLT tapes or to DVD-R DL/DVD+R DL media, what we do next is write the project to a DDP file on the HDD instead.
This will result in 2 folders appearing - Layer 0 and Layer 1.
Each of these has the necessary information for the replication plant to manufacture the discs - all we need to do is get them onto 2 discs instead of 2 DLT tapes.
    This is simplicity itself.
    Launch your burning application.
    Create a new DVD-ROM project.
    Name it (Project)_Layer_1
Broswe to the 2 folders with the DDP files in them, and add the contents in this exact order
    DDPID
    CONTROL.DAT
    IMAGE.DAT
    (Checksum.txt - optional)
    (Log file - optional)
    Burn the disc.
    Repeat for Layer 1.
That is all there is to it.
What will happen at the factory is the Eclipse verification system will look for the DDPID file at the root level of the disc. If it cannot find it, it will assume it is dealing with a standard DVD-ROM disc instead, but if it is there it will know what is going on, load the files, and ask for Layer 1 after it has finished in the normal manner.
    EDIT.
I have just been informed by a VERY reliable source that you can also write a copy protected image to DVD-R discs in this manner.
So that DLT machine is finally obsolete.

    >Everyone's an expert.
ARcoSS and RipGuard aren't flags, they use a non-standard file structure (i.e. delibrate errors). This requires you create the DDP set (author) using a low level application. They support Sonic products. Try reading the requirments over ta sony DADC and Macrovision...it won't wortk w/ Encore.
Who care about the ACP flags it's useless.
I wouldn't call my self an expert (An EX is a has-been, and a SPURT is a drip under pressure :) ) but I have managed to successfully author countless titles with no problems.
Wat I can state for you hyyt99 is that you do not seem to understand this at all.
CSS costs you nothing - it is free. As far as "pointless" goes, it is not much use as a copy protection system but then again, there is absolutely
i no way at all to guarantee any DVD-Video disc cannot be copied.
    Period.
NONE of the available options will protect against anyone for long.
Let's go through the lists again.
CSS - Free at point of replication. Flag has to be added at creation of DLT master or DDP/CMF image.
ACP - or Macrovision. Works as long as the analogue device respects the system. Type 1 is the sole option for PAL, as Types 2 & 3 use Colourstripe, which only works on NTSC standard discs. It tells the copying device the signal strength is much higher than it really is and results in an extremely low level copy. Copying to VHS tapes is very common in Asia, Africa & Arabian countries. Macrovision tend to buy up the patents or rights to boxes that can defeat it.
Flag has to be set at creation of Masters (DLT, CMF or DDP) and carries a setup fee & a per disc royalty. The replication facility must be licensed by Macrovision.
    ARcoSS/RipGuard.
You're only correct in saying that the flags are not set in authoring. They are not. They do NOT, repeat NOT need to be set at all for the DLT/DDP/CMF masters. You need to tell the replication plant you require these, there is a setup fee & a per disc royalty involved, as there is with ACP. There is certainly no way at all to create these discs at home - it is done at the factory, and only at the factory.
Truth is, you cannot protect any DVD-Video disc, or Blu Ray disc, or HD DVD disc at all. It takes a maximum of $30 to buy an application that strips the lot out.
The *only* uncracked protection system is Verance's Watermarking technology for DVD-Audio. And the supreme irony here is that this format is in a deep coma. Yet the watermark travels, and any copies will simply not play. A version of this that can go to DVD-Video is apparently in the works - and speed the day. Who would bother with a disc that has no audio!!

  • How do I burn a DVD R disc with Windows Movie Maker?  It indicates disc error on my DVD player.  Someone thought it had something to do with Itunes?  I reloaded Itunes 1 month ago and had no problem creating this disc then.  Help

I have made several DVD+R discs in the past using Windows Live Movie Maker sucessfully.  I made one about one month ago for my son's b-day.  I am using the same discs as I had then.  When I tried to burn the disc, it indicates that it is burning, however, when I insert it into the DVD player at home on our TV (like I"ve always done), it indicates disc error.  Someone mentioned that the burner goes out every now and then when Itunes is uploaded?  When I burn the disc, I can pull it up on my home and work computers, so I know that it is there.

Yes, you can distribute a burned disk of the project to those who can create duplicate disks.  Or create a disk image of the iDVD project using the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.
Then you can distribute the disk image to those who will burn the disks.  For PCs you'll have to convert the .dmg file to a .iso file so they can burn it.  This website describer how: Mac Help - Convert and Burn Mac .dmg or .img to .iso Windows PC-Compatible Disk Image
Suggest to them to burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
It would be prudent to rest your optical drive for about 30 minutes after burning 3 disks in a row. That will give the laser time to cool down before you start another batch.

  • Project Duration exceeds the maximum content duration ERROR.

I can't burn my movies with idvd. The following message occurs.
    Project Duration
Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn your DVD, change setting in the Project Info window.
Now, the file is about 690 MB, but the total time of the project is 1:30:00.
How do I get my movie burned?

    Hi sunilinjapan
Welcome to apple discussions. How many GB's of available hard drive space do you have currently on the boot volume? Assuming it's at least 25 GB's, then try making a disc image to the desktop from the file menu within iDvd. Then use apple's dvd player to test for proper playback. If you get to this point, then chances are it' not your mac but rather the media (assuming the s-drive is doing it's job and you are not trying to burn back to back dvd's w/o allowing the burner to cool a few mins.)
Hope this helps but if not feel free to come on back.

  • I have a football game recorded on a DVD R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • Sense Error burning DVD disc in Toast

    HI there,
I'm trying to burn an ISO (DVD R disc) using Roxio's Toast Titanium and no matter what brand of disc I use, I keep getting "The drive reported an error: Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03.
    I'm using a 2008 15inch MacBook Pro, running OSX 10.8.5

    hope this is enough info
    thanks in advance

This reply is late, and I hope your issue was solved, but here is what I did when getting the error "Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03" repeatedly when trying to burn a DVD in Toast:
    Researched the web for help.
Ran Disc Utility off of system installer CD to no avail.
Deleted Toast pref file from library – no luck with this.
Wrapped credit card in eyeglass cleaning cloth and inserted several times into SuperDrive (iMac Intel Core Duo machine) – voilà! Successful burning!

  • When attempting to burn a dvd to a memorex DVD Rdl 8.5GB blank disc, the program says it's not a recordable disc.  The content is a 6.5GB Quick Time Conversion video.

When attempting to burn a Quick Time Conversion video to a Memorex DVD+Rdl, 8.7GB blank disk, the program reponds that the dic is not recordable.  It's a new blank disk.  The video is 8.29GB in size.

    Hi
    I see two problems
    • Memorex never worked OK on Mac when doing Video-DVDs - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in them)
    • Size in Gbs - iDVD doesn't care about Gbs at all only duration. And Duration is the sum of Movie time AND MENU TIME.
I have 500Mb files that are to large to fit and 50Gb files that fit's nicely.
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.

  • How do I split a project in IMovie into two projects?  When I try to burn a DVD RDL in IDVD, it tells me the movie is too long.

I am running  IMovie 8.0.6.  (OS X Mavericks 10.9.5) How do I split a project into two projects?  When I share it in Media Browser to IDVD, and try to burn a DVD- RDL, it keeps telling me the project is too long.  Do I split it in IDVD and how do I do that?

AppleMan  Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents"  but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb.  Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong.  Babowa  It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion
