Project/event storage

So its my understanding that if I want to put the event and project folders on another drive (as you should), they have to be in the root of the new drive. This messes with my way of organising... Is there any way to have these folders deeper on a secondary drive?

No.

  • 10.0.6 Projects/Events on External Drive Issue

Ever since the update of 10.0.6, I seem to be having an issue with the projects that are stored on my external media. They are no longer shown in the project manager (infact one of the storage devices flashes up with the project but then it dissapears instantly). Not only that but when I come to "Duplicate Project" or "Move Project" FCPX no longer recognises the external devices as an option.
    A little more info:
        - I am testing on my Macbook Pro (13-inch, 8GB RAM, i5, one prior to the Retina) and my iMac (27-inch, 8GB, i5, prior to the newest one)
        - I am testing two external storage devices (SD card and USB HDD)
        - Both devices are recognised by the new Media Import feature AND Finder
        - Occasionally flashes up project once in the Project Manager
        - Both Macs updated to the latest FCP update
        - Both Macs are running Mountain Lion
Has this feature been moved/removed? Do I need to do something different now? Is there a work around apart from manually copying over projects/events?
This was a really useful feature for me as it meant I could just use external storage and switch between computers.
    Thanks for your help,
    Mike

This comes up pretty regularly. The most common cause is that there is a folder at the root level of the drive with a name like Private or Video or DCIM or something that makes the application believe it's a camera drive.

You do not open the project from Finder. You do that from FCP. They are  in the library.

I cannot access Content Library in iMovie - Content Library doesn't show on the iMovie screen and is greyed out when accessed through "windows" tab at the top. Also unable to update the projects/events (a suggested solution for a similar question). I haven't had this issue before, I have always used the content library on the screen but haven't used this for about a month. How can I make the Content Library available?

Thanks so much! I am backing up the entire computer now with an external hard drive - this should be fine right? And surely if I am backing up the whole computer these projects/videos will be backed up too? I wasn't sure how to do this any other way and I am clearly not great with tech issues. Once this is done and I am sure my projects/videos are safe I will do the delete and reinstall bit. Thanks for taking the time to help

  • Will Deletion of project & event impact movie already sent to .Mac Gallery?

Will Deletion of project & event impact movie already sent to .Mac Gallery? - I want to free up drive space on my MBP (120 just doesn't cut it!), and deleting my multiple projects and events will help immensely. FYI, I have saved all the media DV clips on my external for future use. So I already broadcast / sent medium sized movies to .Mac Gallery, and I assume that since the media files (assuming quicktime .mov) are already on the web gallery (in my iDisk?) that I can delete the iMovie assets without any impact. Is this true? What is a good workflow, given what I have described above?

    WORKFLOW
    1) import clips into iMovie 08
    2) create movie and share the quicktime to my hard drive (for viewing, posting, whatever) ... and broadcast to .Mac Gallery
    3) move video assets (DV files) to external hard drive for future use, posterity, whatever
    4) delete projects and events in iMovie
    5) Run import into Foottrack for a compressed version of the clips on my Laptop
Sounds good to me. Not that familiar with FootTrack as I use iTunes for management of the "portable" files (i.e., single file compressed for iPod, iPhone, TV, and/or web use).

  • I am trying to update  to 10.1.1 from  backup project/event folders

am trying to update  to 10.1.1 from a backup project/event folders and all I am getting is the new library with clips ( in/outs marked) but no sequence file for the program. Can anyone shed a little light my way?

Here's the location on media drive 2.   I navigate to update on FCP.
Hee are the results. Clips are there but no project?

  • How to update old projects/events FCPX 10.1.1?

So back when I updated FCPX to version 10.1, I updated most of my old projects and events to be consolidated into a new library. However, at the time I still left some of those projects/events in the "hidden" folder, so they were then placed in the "OLD FInal Cut Projects and Events" folder. I'm working locally on my computer because these are older, smaller projects.
Now, when I go into FCPX to try to update these old projects and events, it won't let me update them. When I go to locate into the "OLD Final Cut Projects and Events" folder, it is all greyed out and won't let me update anything. Does anyone know a way around this?? Seems counterintuitive that they've made the old projects/events obsolete, because now I need to work off them!
Specs: MBP 17 in. OSX 10.9.2, 2.53 ghz, 8GB RAM.

The app needs to see those projects/event in the right place and in folders named Final Cut Projects and Final Cut  Events, respectively. Those two folders should be at the root level of an external (non boot) drive and/or in your Home Movies folder on your boot drive.
If they are correctly named and located, FCP will see them when you chose Update Projects and Events from the Fiue menu…choose locate then navigate to the drive/folder.

  • Can I re-mix audio by importing iMovie Project/Events to FCP X, and mixing in a pro studio?

This needs a little backstory: I edited a promo of Select Scenes from a doc that I shot on a Canon SF105 HD, doing a quick job on iMovie for my website. I did the best I could as both an amateur mixer and using consumer software. The audio "mix" is horrific, of course, and being old school film, I need something a whole lot better. It was suggested by a pro edit studio (& friend) that I might IMPORT the iMovie Project & Events library to FCP X, and using these "mix elements", they could use their system (probably AVID or a hybrid) to do a proper mix. They would then lay back the track to the picture. They don't use FCP X, but again, with separate sound tracks, they might be able to do  something of it. Am I dreaming?

If the project is in a recent version of iMovie you might be able to. Clean up the iMovie project of all extraneous transitions, effects, and titles, and any DRM audio. Download the trial version and give it a shot.

  • Final Cut Pro Update - Old Projects & Events

Hi, Final Cut updated my folder structure (making it super confusing) and now I have a folder with a purple icon that has 4 stars that says "Macintosh HD's Projects & Events" and also a "Macintosh HD Old Final Cut Projects & Events" folder.
The "new" one is 315GB and the old one is over 500GB. Between the two I am now very low on harddrive space.
My question.... Can I delete the "Old" folder of projects & events? When I look at the new folder it appears to have everything in it, but I just wanted to make sure before I delected 500GB of projects.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Don't delete anything until the update process is completed and you are happy with the results.
A thing called Hard Links has occured that really uses little drive space.
It may appear that there are TWO large files but it's not really the case.
Check this info to know what's happening:

  • Converting legacy FCPX projects/events to 10.1

How may I go about converting just a SPECIFIC project and a SPECIFIC event from 10.0.9 to 10.1? (That is to say, I wish to cherry-pick. I do NOT want to convert an entire batch of projects / events that I have archived on an external drive.)
    Please advise.
    Thanks!

Move all projects and events out of the FC Projects and FC Events folders into FC Projects - Hidden and FC Events - Hidden (or use Event Manager X), leaving just the project and event you want. Update.

  • FCPX Projects & Events HUGE GBs!

I have a new Mac Pro, just started using Final Cut X.
My FCPX Projects & Events is 300GB but I only have 3 current projects, containing 70GB.
What's happening? Is the render cache hiding old files/renders?

Thanks Russ! Never noticed "Show Package Contents" before.
In one current project, I have a few folders, one of which is "Original Media" and another is "Transcoded Media". I'm not sure what Transcoded Media is about, but it appears that it creates High Quality versions of my original clips at way larger file sizes.
For example, my first original clip is 21.1 MB, and the Transcoded one is 9.8GB!
What's weird is that my 7th original clip is 1.27GB, and the Transcoded isn't much bigger at 3.85GB.
What is this all about? Do I need these things?

  • How to Import iMovie v9 Projects/Events to iMovie v10

I had a heck of a time finding info on transitioning from the previous version (v9.0.9) to the current version (v10.0.7). One of the problems I was having was getting the new version to recognize my old Projects and Events. After some digging here and elsewhere, I figured out what was wrong and how to fix it.
In my case, I had provisioned iMovie 9 to keep the Events folder on an external hard drive while the Projects folder was on my iMac's internal drive in the Movies folder. Don't ask me why they were separated; I can't remember why I did that or even if it was a mistake. Whatever the reason, it caused trouble when it came time to upgrade.
iMovie 10 keeps all the Projects and Events in a single Library file. By default, this Library is placed in your Movies folder on your Mac's internal hard drive. During the initial installation, iMovie will ask if you want to import the old versions Events and Projects. You can opt to do it right then or wait until later. When you do attempt to import these files, iMovie 10 will look in the Movies folder for the previous version's iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders. If you have both of these folders in their default position, the new iMovie should be able to immediately import the files by copying them to the new version's Library. The old files will remain in their folders and will be useable by the previous version without any problems.
If you have the previous version's Projects and/or Events folders somewhere other than where iMovie 10 expects to find them, you may encounter an error when you try to import the old files. Even if the attempt fails, iMovie 10 creates extra files inside the old folder that prevent a successful import if you try it again. You'll need to look inside the old iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders for a file called "UpdatedToiMovie10" and delete it from each folder. (In my case, I deleted these files from any drive that had these folders, not just the internal hard drive.) Restart iMovie 10 and select File > Update Projects and Events... to restart the import process. As long as the new iMovie Library is in the same folder as the old iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders, this should proceed without a hitch.
If, like me, your old projects and events were stored at least partially on an external hard drive, you should consolidate them onto a single drive. DO NOT do this from the Mac's Finder. Move the projects and events to the drive where you want them by dragging them in iMovie 9's browser. Hold the Command key while dragging to move the files instead of just copying them. (If you copy the files instead of moving them, you'll have duplicates on both drives. It's not a problem, but the files will take up at least twice as much space on your drives.) Once the files are located where you want them, you can quit iMovie 9 and re-attempt the iMovie 10 import process by selecting File > Update Projects and Events...
I hope this helps anyone else having this issue. I also hope that anyone who can see where I've explained this incorrectly will please post a correction as a response.

iMovies are not designed to be viewed in iPhoto. You should watch your movies from iTunes. You can SHARE/To iTunes and your movies will be in iTunes. From iTunes, you can watch them on your Mac, on your Apple TV, or you can sync to iPhone, iPad, iPod. You will also be able to access them through the Media Browser in Keynote, Pages, GarageBand, Logic, and iDVD.
The only movies that should be stored in iPhoto are short, unedited clips taken by a still camera. iMovie can edit them without taking them out of iPhoto.

  • Crashes when trying to open project/event

I have been working on a large (very, very important) project for the last three months. I had an hour and 20 mins of footage over three camera angles to edit together. I have experienced continuous crashes throughout working on this, I would get about 20 mins workflow max before the whirling beachball appeared then would have to switch off and let rest for a couple of hours before the mac would even start back up. Coming to the very end of my edit as I was adding in the end credits and mp3 soundtrack to this, FCPX keep saying there was no more memory to save edits and to clear some space, I was running the project from my external hard drive that was full to the brim so I copied the project to the hard drive on the mac (which had nothing else on it at all) the project opened but with missing files throughout. Next for no reason at all FCPX unexpectedly quits on start up, I uninstall and reinstall, this does not solve problem. I hid the events and projects which enabled me to open FCPX.
So now I can open FCPX with the event im working on showing in the events folder, but it shows up with missing files still and when I click on the event to open it, FCPX closes up showing the unexpectedly quit box.
I have basic editing knowledge and very basic mac knowledge so I really dont know how to get out of this problem!
I hope someone can please HELP!!!

OK, go back to your original set up, with your Project and Events on the external drive.
"Duplicate" the project (Project Library, highlight, right-click, "Duplicate") inside of FCP X, select the option to include all referenced Events. Then disconnect the external drive before launching FCP X.
You may experience a degridation in performance running Projects and Events off of the internal drive, also.
Even if you reinstall the app, that doesn't effect preferene files.  I'd download the free "Preferene Manager" from  Digital Rebellion (dot com) and trash the prefs.
Also go into each Event and Project specific folder in the Finder, trash all Render files.

  • Updated to 10.1, now can't find projects/events on external drives

Yesterday, I blithely updated my Final Cut Pro X to version 10.1. Now I am totally lost...
I have gradually got used to the way FCP operates and now, all my Events and Projects are on an external drive, organised in a series of folders; current, finished etc.
When I started FCP yesterday, instead of finding any of my events and projects, FCP created a new Library on my HD.
I use a Macbook Air and do not use my small HD for FCP... how do I tell FCP where all my files are?
I can create a new library on my HD but if I try to move it to the external drive, it is copied and if I delete the original, FCP creates another one on the HD...
Getting lost and confused as there appears to have been a wholesale change of the basic way in which FCP functions.
I don't want to use my HD library as a 'working' library, not least because I don't know how to then find the files, to transfer them to the external drive to back them up.
Also, the HD is far too small for this purpose.
How do I go about persuading FCP to set up and then use libraries on my external drives?

You have to let your projects and events sit in the expected folders in order to have FCP X 10.1 update them to new libraries. If 10.1 sees old events and projects in your external drive (they need to be in the places older versions required them, i.e. at the root level in "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" folders) it will offer to update them to a new library.
You should heed Philip Hoggetts' advice about using Event Manager X (now free) to help with managing the transition. You probably don't want to gobble up all your previous projects and events in one mega-library, but give it some form of organization. See here: http://www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/1304-upgrade-your-events-and-projects- to-fcpx-10-1-libraries-the-smart-way
