Project File Saving with FCPX

Former FCP7 user who last year switched over to Adobe Premiere Pro CC and considering coming back to Final Cut via FCPX.
MY PROJECTS: 100% AVCHD 24 to 35 mbps, from Canon DSLR's, Canon Camcorders, and GoPro Hero 4 Silver.  Most videos are multicam of 3 or 4 cameras, sometimes up to 6 or 8 (although infrequent) with Audio captured on all cameras via on camera audio except camera 1 and/or camera 2 which will have XLR direct wired or wireless fed.  All raw/project work will be on an external Thunderbolt Duo Raid Drive.
Q 1:  Am I best to use a new generate MacPro 3.7 GHz with at least 16 Gb ram and dual FoxPro Vid cards with 2Gb vmem each OR will a iMac of similar speed processor i7 with same memory limit work?
Q 2:  With Adobe Pr I was able to put all of a video project into one file folder, can I do the same with FCPX?  That is, a single folder entitled PROJECT 1 with the following files in it:
     -  Project file
     -  Folder containing all the captured or raw footage (file based)
     -  Folder with images
     -  Render files
     -  Any other files for that project
This idea being that once the project is created with all the scratch and other raw files into a single folder, the project could be off loaded onto portable drive and sent to another editor who in turn would copy the entire folder onto their Project Raid Drive, edit then off load to that same original portable drive, and then sent back to the original editor and/or another editor to follow the same process and continue the edit and/or wrap the project up and output into a NEW FOLDER within the same original folder.
Q 3:  What would be suggested for DVD Authoring with menus and the like to produce near Hollywood style looking DVD functionality?  I have Toast Titanium and now defunct (EOL) DVD Studio Pro and DVD Creator.
Thank you in advance to those who respond and help in this matter.  My special priced CC subscription is running out in January and want to make a decision before then or will renew (although I don't really care for Adobe Pr CC.

FCP X with a recent iMac can do everything you want except the "Hollywood style“… DVD functionality. DVD's look good but menus and other authoring are very spartan. I'd suggest Encore remains your best bet.
In FCP X. rather than a folder with your project and assets, you would have a library with managed media (copy all your imports to the library).
Multicam projects are a strong suit.
Good luck

  • How do I revert to replaced audio files being saved with the project file, *not* with the original audio files?

In the latest release, when you send an audio clip to Audition, the newly created audio clip - which was previously saved in the same folder as the project file - is saved next to the original audio file.
Makes sense, but for reasons to boring to go into, it's a major headache for my workflow, because it means combing through folders to find the files, instead of having them all in once place.
So how to I turn this off and revert to those files being saved next to the project file?

  • Project Files & Saving

There is often confusion between Saving a Project and Exporting/Sharing a Video from that Project.
Let’s look at what a Project file is. In PrE, this is a .PREL file. In PrPro, it’s a .PRPROJ file. These are just XML database files, that define the Project, show where the media used in that Project was located the last time that you had the NLE (Non Linear Editor) program and that Project, open. Then, there are instructions as to what one has done to those media Assets. There is no media, of any sort included in it.
If you open it up in WordPad, or an XML editor, it looks something like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <PremiereData Version="3">
    <Project ObjectRef="1"/>
    <Project ObjectID="1" ClassID="62ad66dd-0dcd-42da-a660-6d8fbde94876" Version="20">

Note: in the actual Project file, there will be much indentation, that does not show up above.
There is much, much more, but this should give you an idea. You cannot "play" this file with any media player. Remember, there is zero media in it, only links to that media. Also, there are only two programs that can do anything but allow one to edit the various text lines in a Project file. PrPro can open both types, .PREL’s and.PRPROJ’s, with a few exceptions. PrE can ONLY open .PREL files and will give you an error that "this Project was created in PrPro. Use that program to open this Project." There are no exceptions to this, though who knows if PrE 8 will be able to open .PRPROJ files?
Now that we know there is no media in these files, what good are they? Well, they contain links to the location of the media and also instructions on what one has done to that media. They are the instructions for PrE and PrPro, with descriptions of all edits. They are the working tools of both of these NLE programs. They also must be set up, before one can do anything else in these programs.
As one works with the Project, they will want to Save their Project files, or any edits will be lost. There are basically three ways to this, plus one additional variation.
First, there is Save. It records all operations and instructions to the previously created Project file, overwriting the previous version. I do this often and usually use Ctrl+s for this purpose.
Next, we have Save_As. This does a Save, but with two variations: it allows one to set a new name, or location for this Project file. I use this and increment the Project file’s name, as I go. This does NOT overwrite the existing Project file, but writes another one, with the name, or location that the user assigns. The second part of this, and quite important, is that not only does it Save with the new name/location, but it keeps this new Project open in the NLE. You are now working on the new version, and not the original. To me, this is especially useful, if I want to leave the original version untouched, in case I need to go back to it at some date. After a day of editing, or after some big changes, I’ll make sure to do this, so I have the original, plus this newly edited version. By incrementing by 1, I know that if I am working with [Project Name]_05, it came after [Project Name]_04, so it is newer.
Then, we have Save_As_a_Copy. How does this differ from Save_As? The biggest difference is that it does not overwrite the original, allows one to change, or increment, the file name/location, but it does NOT stay open in the program. You are still working with the original version, and this Save_As_a_Copy version is tucked away, in case you need it at some time. I use this, when I just want a record and a backup of that moment for possible later use. It’s more of a "snapshot" of how things were at that moment.
Last is the "variation" that I mentioned. This is AutoSave. Depending on one’s Preferences, these will be stored in the AutoSave folder in the Project’s hierarchy. By default, one will have five of these and they will reflect that they are AutoSave files. Note: one must do a first Save in an editing session to start AutoSave, which will make an AutoSave copy at the time interval set in Preferences. Also, Premiere is pretty smart. It will NOT just AutoSave every 5 mins (or whatever time interval is set in Preferences), unless some work has been done. This is a good thing, as AutoSave will overwrite the previous files in that folder. If you go to lunch, if it did not keep track of edits being done, one would end up with 5 exactly identical copies of the same file in AutoSave. This would not be that useful.*
Now, because it does overwrite your previous AutoSave files, you need to pay close attention, should you ever need to use an AutoSave Project file. By default, there will be five files, _001, _002, _003, _004 and _005. However, because of that overwriting (basically FIFO), you need to change the View in Windows Explorer to Details, and sort by Date/Time, to make sure that you are getting the latest version. Remember, _003 could well be newer than _005. Watch out for this, and do the Sort on Date/Time to be sure.
Hope that this helps one distinguish between Project files and Video FROM that Project, plus give some tips on Save, Save_As, Save_As_a_Copy and also AutoSave.

    * It has come to my attention that as of PrPro CS3, things have changed with Auto-Save. One does not need to do an initial Save to start Auto-Save, but if left Open, though no editing is being done, the Auto-Save will keep on overwriting the files at the set interval, say every 5 mins.. What this means is that if you leave a Project Open for 25 mins., have the number of Auto-Saves at the default of 5 and the default of every 5 mins., you will have 5 copies of the same Project file. I do not know what Adobe was thinking here, as Auto-Save should not be active, if no editing is being done. I often have a Project Open, but am working in PS, AI, or Encore, so there is no editing being done in PrPro, but there soon will be. I do not want all previous Auto-Saves being overwritten with the same exact file. With PrPro CS3 or higher, I strongly recommend that one does a lot more Save_As and Save_As_a_Copy, than in previous editions, or they might be in for a rude surprise, if they went to lunch, or just left the Project Open for a half-hour.

There is a special use for the Save, Save_As and Save_As_a_Copy, that might not be readily apparent. As we have discussed how the three differ, I will only cover this use, and the user can then choose which works for them.
Often, an editor will work on a large Project, but need to break out segments of that Project into separate "mini Projects." The easiest way to do this is to make sure that a Save has been done for the full, large Project. Then, just Delete anything not needed in the new mini Project. This could be Clips on the Timeline, Assets in the Project Panel, or Sequences (in PrPro only). When done, just choose Save_As, or Save_As_a_Copy. If more "versions" of that large Project are needed, Open the original, repeat the Deletions, and then do the appropriate Save_As, with another name, or into another location.
Remember, all forms of Save are for the entire Project, and not just elements of it, unless you remove all unnecessary elements.

  • Project File Sync with SharePoint online across time zones

We have a Project file that we have synced with an 0365 SharePoint site.  The project teams are working in US Central Time and Vladivostok Russia.  The original Project file is set up in Vladivostok time.  Users see the SharePoint Task Dates
in their local time.  However, when the project manager opens the file in Central Time Zone, the project file automatically reschedules start dates that are on Monday in Vladivostok (which start on Sunday in US Central Time) to non-weekend US Days and
then updates the SharePoint Tasks.  If the project manager in Vladivostok opens the file, more auto-scheduling occurs to move Start Dates to non-weekends in Vladivostok.
Is there anything we can do to avoid the auto-rescheduling based on the time zones that will not affect the file if we need to change the Start and Due Dates due to late starts?
    Kim Frehe

The level of sophistication that synchronizing to a SharePoint site is minimalistic. This is a very simple collaboration scheme. AFAIK, there is nothing you can do other than to all play in the same time zone, or at least pretend to by observing the offset.
For international collaboration, Project Online would be your best answer. I suggest that you request a 30-day trial, which you can obtain from a Gold partner such as my company.

  • Cannot open Project files from previous FCPX versions

    Hello,
I'm currently on 10.0.8, and have not upgraded to 10.1.1.  Here is my issue:
A documentary project I've been working on since 10.0.1 is not showing up in 10.0.8, and I'm wondering how to "manually" update the Project.  I upgraded FCPX versions a few times while working on this Project (I think all the way up to 10.0.4), but then I stopped as I noticed it was negatively affecting parts of my project and making the application run slow (and Apple recommends you don't update versions while in the middle of a project).  I finished that project, but now fast forward and I'm in 10.0.8 and I need to revisit that Project to make a few changes, but FCPX won't even recognize it.  It successfully updated and recognizes the Events I used for this particular Project, but not the Project itself.
    Any help/suggestions would be great.
    Thank you!

Thanks Russ.  After all this time, I actually solved the problem myself.  I forgot that back 6 months ago, I renamed my Project file, from the default "CurrentVersion".  I just came across another post that said you're not supposed to do that, so I changed my Project file back to "CurrentVersion" and now FCPX recognizes it.  After all that toil, the answer was just too simple!!
    Thanks.

  • Reader can't open file saved with "Extended Features"

    Any help would be appreciated.
File created with Acrobat Pro 9.
File opens fine under Windows and Linux, but can't be saved.
Enable "Extended Features in Adobe Reader" in Acrobat Pro 9.
File can be saved under Windows, but gives an error in Linux.
"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader.  The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available.  Please contact the author for the original version of the document."
The file opens, but is unusable.  Nothing can be entered into any of the fields.
    Thanks,
         -matt

I had the same problem earlier this week -- I created a PDF with Acrobat 9, enabled for commenting, sent out to coworkers, who then reported the "use of extended features is no longer available" message. After many, many troubleshooting permutations, I finally found the problem to be related to the timestamp on the file.
I am on the US east coast, and the document was sent to coworkers on the US west coast, 3 hours earlier. When they opened the document, it appeared to be "from the future" (lol) and therefore suspect. This was born out by the fact that the next day, the file behaved as expected for them. I also verified this on a test system, where I was able to switch the time setting. By the way, this happened with both Reader 8 and 9.
So, I guess the workaround is either to change your computer's time before sending a file with rights extensions to someone in an earlier time zone, or create it and hold it until they have caught up with the time in the file's timestamp.
That has to be about the weirdest bug I have encountered to date...and I have no idea why it showed up this week. I have been sending out PDFs enabled for commenting for a couple years.

    Hi all:
I want to read Mircorsoft Project File in Solaris, but it too difficult to me.

most of microsoft documents (doc, excel, mpp) files are formatted in propriety way. at the same time they follow some xml standards.
i think you can get those xml DTDs and try to build read mpp as xml.

  • Thumbnails in Bridge lost in files saved with AE CS6

On Windows I have some templates (aet) from AE 7 and CS3 that include thumbnails in the XMP, and Bridge CS6 shows these.  If I open these templates in AE CS6 and save them out, no thumbnail is preserved/added to the XMP.
I looked through the preferences for AE CS6 and I can't find anything related to saving out previews/thumbnails in the XMP for a project or template.
Is there a setting that will allow me to get thumbnails in the XMP that I would see in Bridge?  Was this a capability that was dropped some time between CS3 and CS6?
    David Blake

I can contact my customer and see if he wants to contact you about his templates that have thumbnails.
The files I am testing with are from Adobe Exchange.  The metadata in the file doesn't indicate who they are from or who created them.  The thumbs are in the screenshot below.

  • Cannot find .TIF file saved with Acrobat 9 Pro

I have a Canon document scanner that I use with Acrobat 9 Pro on Windows 7. I can scan the document into Acrobat, and save it as a PDF just fine. However, if I try to save it as a .TIF or a .TIFF, it appears to save just fine, but I'm unable to locate it afterwards. Here's what I've done so far:
    - Checked to make sure hidden files are visible in Windows Explorer
    - Made sure the permissions for the folder allowed writing files (even saved the TIF files to the same folder as the PDF files)
    - Searched for the filename with Windows Search. It finds the file, but when I try to click on it to open the file, Windows says that the file cannot be found.
We're needing this for importing documents into a LIMS program, and we can't get that working until this part gets resolved. Anything that you can think of to help would be great. Thank you!

Solved: It appears to be a Microsoft Word issue as it doesn't occur with other apps. When using the built-in 'convert to PDF' tool within Word the file name length is respected. It's an older version of Word (Word 2002 SP3). I printed a file using the same name length with Wordperfect and it works fine.
I know this isn't a Word help forum, but if anyone does have a solution to offer it would be appreciated :-)

  • File Saving with Linked Images

Why does file saves take longer when images are linked (not embedded.) ? It's just linking to the file, it should be nice and quick to save, such as it is in inDesign.

You are probably saving using the default save options. This means Illustrator is saving the file twice in one file: once as a native Illustrator file and once as a high resolution PDF with images embedded. The PDF is used when you place the Illustrator file in InDesign or rasterize with Photoshop. If you don’t need either of those things, do a Save As and turn off PDF Compatibility. I have seen files drop from over 200 MB to under 1 MB.

  • Are INDD files saved with trial software good to go...

... with the purchased software I will receive later? I am anxious to get start converting PageMaker files, but do not want to waste time doing so if all my editing is not saved in files that can be used with the purchased software. Thank you.

    They'll be fine.

  • Retreiving files saved with Time Machine on a different computer

I am trying to view files on my external hard drive that I saved from my Macbook Pro on an older Macbook that does not have Time Machine on it. Any folder I try to open is locked and I get a message saying it is empty. When I checked the backups on the original computer, they work fine. Is it possible to view these files on a different computer?

An older MacBook that doesn't have Time Machine would not know about hard links to folders. So, when you look in them, you don't see the linked files and thus it looks empty. TM uses hard links to keep track of files that have not changed. Somewhere, there is an actual file, but if it doesn't change, TM just puts a hard link in all the subsequent backups. Trying to dig through the backup, especially after changing permissions on the folder, will likely destroy the backup.
Perhaps one of the Finder replacements or Time Machine helper apps can understand the hard links to folders, but I'm not sure.

  • Will I lose my old project files etc with upgrading to FCP 2

    Hi
I think after upgrading to Leopard with FCP Studio 1 not able to use compressor or DVD Studio Pro to burn. I think I need to upgrade to Studio 2 as my only logical answer without major problems. If I upgrade from 5.0.1 PowerPC version to Studio 2 will my old projects be moved over to upgrade no problem?
    Thanks
    Jason

Thanks for the reply guys! Do any of you see another solution to the problem of leopard and using the older apps? I guess it is better to start new after installing leopard. Lastly do I need to trash the old FCP 1 before install of FCP 2 or does it just upgrade it?
    Thanks Jason

  • File saving with Frame 10

I can not save a file to the same location that I got it from. I get error messages saying: can't open the .lck file and 2. that I don't have permission and yet I can save other file formats perfectly well. I can save the FM files to a different location, for example my desktop.
I installed some Windows updates earlier on. I'm using WinXP SP3.
I'd like to know if there is a known reason for this?
    Graham

You shouldn't be trying to open the .lck file - you should be opening the regular file and getting a message that someone is still working on it and if you know that no-one is, then you can override the warning. Your problem may also be that the file itself has gotten set to view-only within FM - you can reset it. Check the Help file or the forums for view-only - there are instructions out there for doing it (I just can't remember off the top of my head).

  • Why are my InDesign 6 files saving with Acrobat extensions

This has just recently started happening. Suggestions?

In terms of Adobe, an "extension" is something like a plugin or a script.  Something you can manage in the Extension Manager. Are you sure you mean that?
And it most certainly did not happen without you taking any previous action to cause it, an action like system updates, software updates or wildly changing preferences.
Suggestions? One: restore your OS to a date prior to the first problem appearance and then leave it untouched.
