Project Folder or Program Files???

I'm having problems with drive too slow error messages and system overload, and shouldn't be... I'm using an external firewire 7200rpm drive for my audio. I've reformatted my audio drive, as well as reloaded Tiger onto a freshly formatted system drive, and still spinning @#$&*@ pinwheel! I'm on a quadG5 pre intel with 8GB Ram.... Is it better to save all audio instruments, ir responses, and audio samples to the project folder or use them from the system folder????? Pinwheel and error messages are very infuriating.... Anyone any ideas???????

The default location for an iTunes library is your profile's Music folder.
Assuming you are not bothered by ratings, playlists etc. then start by connecting iTunes to your largest library. Use the menu items File > Library > Organize Library... > Rearrange files in the folder iTunes media (if availible) and then File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files.
Next move the media from each of the other libraries into the Automatically add to iTunes folder  of what is going to become your only library. When iTunes has finished processing all these additions you can delete the library files & folders of the redundant libraries.
You can now move the library to <User's Music>\iTunes and connect to it, or alternatively move it to the root of a drive that has room for growth.
Your combined library is likely to have accumulated a number of duplicate files. I've written a script called DeDuper which can help tidy up. See this thread for background.

  • ITunes fails to install update "folder path program files contains an invalid character"

I'm trying to get the newest version of itunes, but I keep getting "the folder path program files contains an invalid character." I've seen on here before attempts to use Microsoft fix it and Windows Clean up which I've tried and both haven't helped. I've gone to youtube and tried to delete the appropriate folders under the registry edit. Nothing seems to work. I need the new itunes to update my iphone because of the recent hardware crash via the new update.

At what stage in the process does this occur?
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • ITunes Update attempt: "The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character"

How can I install the latest version when I get this message : "The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character"? The message appears when I try to install the update and it appears when I try to uninstall the previous version. The instructions for manual uninstall says to use the Control Panel Uninstall Programs first and then "clean up" -- but I can't use the Control Panel Uninstall. I am running iTunes from an external drive. What to do?

That's normally produced by a damaged iTunes.msi. The basic treatment for it is given in the following user tip:
["not a valid short file name" and "invalid character" install errors|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2368028]
... but since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Downloads Center, things have grown more difficult. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now start with *step 4* from the user tip, and proceed from there.
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • Error 'The Folder path 'Program Files (x86)' contains an invalid character

I get this error (as it is in the title) when I try to install Itunes. I don't have quicktime or a previous installation of Itunes on my computer. How do I fix it?

yes, itunes will not run without quicktime but when I try to install quicktime it says "the folder path 'program files' contains an invalid character".  have you figured it out yet?

  • Error Message:The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character

I have an 80G iPod. I never had a problem with the itunes program until I switched to Vista. When I try to open iTunes I get the following error message:
*The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character*
I have itunes installed on both my HP and on an external hard drive that I use as my backup in case something goes wrong. Neither one opens and I get the same error message on both. I have tried to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall and get the same message so I can't uninstall.
I'm really frustrated, I need to get to my music for a huge presentation in a few days. Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Why does the folder "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements" open automatically when I start my PC?

Why does the folder "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements" open automatically when I start my PC? How do I adjust settings to stop this from happening?

    Hi,
This folder is probably treated as a program to run at startup.
So you will have to look at the places where such programs are referenced.
For instance, you may have a shortcut to that folder in your Start Menu > Startup.
Or it may be in the Registry.
Click on Start >  Execute, the type msconfig and click OK.
This will show you in the Startup tab all the programs launched at startup.

  • TS1538 I do not have the Driver folder in this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support like it says I should and myApple Iphone appears in Portable Devices. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it.

I do not have the Driver folder in this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support like it says I should and my Apple Iphone appears in Portable Devices only, not in Universal devices. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. My Iphone is still not recognized by Itunes when I plug it in. I can see my photos in the internal storage folder on my Windows 7 system though. So I know my PC sees the device. The Iphoneis an Iphone 4 with IOS 6 installed. It was working fine until I had to reinstall my Windows system. Now Itunes does not see it. I've uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled it (64bit) to no avail. Where is the Driver folder article TS1538 talks about?

Sorry I missed your post. Anyone else with the same issue should find useful resources at Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

  • HT1925 i am russian remuved itunes at all i wont instal folder C:/Program files/itunes what i must do

i am russian remuved itunes at all i wont instal folder C:/Program files/itunes what i must do

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • I cannot uninstall my current version or install the new version because I always get the following error "The folder path 'Program Files (x86)' contains an invalid character."

How do you get ITunes to actually uninstall or install new versions when it doesn't like the path for some completely unknow reason.  This is on a Windows7 system and by the way a lot of other programs are using this folder without any issues so it is clearly an Apple problem.

    Try the following user tip:

  • Upgrade from 6.x to 7.01 today lost saved passwords (Win7) (installation folder is \program files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox 4.0 Beta 10\

I was alerted to new version when Ubuntu upgraded yesterday; this morning I did manual upgrade on Windows 7, and all my saved passwords and bookmarks are gone. History seems to be complete, and somehow this morning (without my noticing any crash) Firefox prompted me to restore the previous session, and then gave me windows from yesterday.

Solved: Firefox 7.01 was installed "as admin" from user account and it started up using admin profile. Restart of Firefox returned me to user profile.

  • ITunes 10.4 on Windows 7, empty program files folder and no icons

I uninstalled iTunes on my pc and not I am reinstalling iTunes 10.4 x64 on my Windows 7 PC.
The program states that it install successfully.
However, there are no icons for iTunes AND the default install folder, c:\program files (x86)\iTunes, is empty.
I have uninstalled all itunes components from previous install (bonjour, mobile device, etc).  I have removed folders after uninstalls.
    Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks

    Guess what ...
I gave it a last try, and followed the uninstall procedure from the Apple support site (again),
then checked that all directories they listed were gone (they were), then removed every trace
of "Apple" and "Apple Inc." from the registry, rebooted, then installed iTunes 10.4.0.80 again
after downloading it from the Apple site.
After it started - surprise - it still knew about the different location of my library, and all my settings,
from sync to encoding, were still there!
Then I connected the iPhone, waited until Windows 7 told me the drivers were installed and working,
and I right-clicked the iPhone in iTunes and selected "save" (backup).
And - oh wonder - the backup finished in less than two minutes, INCLUDING music and video files!
Next I did a regular sync - and, oh horror ...
First, it told me some 30 contacts would be changed. Although I couldn't see any difference from the
conflict display (guys, when there is a conflict, show me WHAT is different - is it THAT hard?!?!). I told it to update the entries in Outlook, let the iPhone win.
Next - shock number two - it told me one entry in my calendar would be new, but some almost 400 would be different. It seems they all have one day offset ...
Great ... now I need to check out all my data in Outlook.
Oh boy ... three years that this problem comes and goes, by now it hadn't hit me personally, but now it has.
I'm really done with that **** - now I *can* sync and backup, but what's the point if it corrupts my data?!?!
    Hey APPLE ... I'm soooooooo p*ssed !!
