Project Resolution for Encore CS5

I've recently started using Encore CS5 to create Blu-ray discs. I'm creating my projects from sequences from within Final Cut 7 and creating the Blu-ray files using Compressor.
I've noticed that Encore asks you to select a project resolution when creating a new project. For my first disc, everything was shot at 1920x1080, so the choice was easy. However, I'm now creating a second disc which uses material that is both 1920x1080 and 1280x720. I've once again created the Blu-ray files in Compressor.
Suppose I set the project resolution to 1920x1080 - what will I have to do to the 1280x720 files? Can I just insert them into the project? If I do that, will Encore re-encode the files to match the 1080 resolution? Or, should I up-res them in Final Cut by dropping them into a 1080 sequence and re-export them? Or, if I drop them in, will they just be left alone and unchanged?
Is it possible to have a disc with mixed resolutions? I'm confused on how to proceed...

Another thing to watch out for is the whole interlaced and progressive scan thing.
Primary Video reolutions and frame rates allowed are, I believe, as below.
In this case, you must be very careful to match frame rates or else transcoding may well ensue....
i/.     1920x1080 (aka"Full HD") allowing frame rates of 29.97i, 25i, 24p and 23.976p
ii/.     1440x1080 allowing frame rates of 29.97i, 25i, 24p and 23.96p
iii/.     1280x720 allowing frame rates of 59.94p, 50p, 24p and 23.976p
iv/.     720x576 allowing a frame rate of 25i
v/.     720x480 allowing a frame rate of 29.97i

  • Are user manuals available for download for Encore CS5 and Premiere pro

I've been told that there are user manuals for Premiere Pro and Encore CS5, but I've spent considerable time trying to locate where to download them from. I've found then from what appear to be third party entities, but I have trouble trusting many of them. Doesn't Adobe offer them? I've tried searching their website, but come up with nothing. I don't doubt that it is in there somewhere, but they don't exactly manke it easy to find.

  • How to Scale Up UI Resolution for Adobe CS5?

I am using a  Windows installation of Adobe CS5. I have the Master Collection. I recently upgraded my computer to a laptop with a very high-resolution display and now everything in Photoshop, Bridge, and After Effectrs is RIDICULOUSLY tiny. I can't use it. Illustrator and InDesign look and function fine. What's the deal? How can I fix this?

Here, I found a solution. It's not a "perfect" solution, but it seems that it's best I can hope for since I refuse to pay a monthly fee for the right to use Photoshop. Adobe App Scaling on High DPI Displays (FIX) | Dan Antonielli It basically tells Windows to scale the software like it does all other low-res software.

  • Trancode burn hangs/crashes in Encore CS5 but works fine in CS4

    Hi,
I've been reading lots of stuff in the threads about Encore CS5 crashing at various times, and I wanted to see if someone could shed some light on my circumstances..
Windows 7, LG Blu-ray burner, everything always worked fine in CS4.
I had been using Encore CS4 to burn my Premier CS5 projects because I couldn't ever get Encore CS5 to work prior to the latest update..
I did a new project in CS5 and when I did a rough cut burn it worked ok..
Since then, no joy.. It imports it from PP to Encore (CS5) and starts rolling, but then seems to freeze along the way in transcoding and crash. If I load the same project saved by Encore CS5 and try burning to blu-ray in CS4 it transcodes, burns and works.. So it does seem to be some difference between Encore CS4 and CS5. I really want CS5 to work for the promise of not needing to transcode AVCHD, and make it look worse
Couple of things to note that may or may not matter:
I read somewhere that "blank space in the timeline" crashes Encore CS5 .. I mean really? I have a couple of gaps of black in the timeline when I switch sections, but this never caused a problem before, and this seems like a bug that Adobe just couldn't have could they? For real?
I have both CS4 and CS5 installed. Does this matter? I haven't uninstalled yet, because CS4 works, and CS5 doesn't.
I have a GTX 295 (not the 285 and I did the "hack" to load and take advantage of the GPU's with the mercury engine). Everything in Premier CS5 seems to work fine, but admittedly, the one time I did get Encore CS5 to work, this was not in enabled and now it is.. Could this really matter?
Right after I post this I'll be doing that roxio update thing, but I have a pretty fresh copy of Win 7, totally updated that I the only thing I do with it is use it for Premier, so the point is I don't have a bunch of junk installed and use to for all sorts of other stuff.
I really want to fix this because I have noticed that after CS4 transcodes and I burn the blu-ray, it doesn't seem to look as good.. And since nearly all my footage is in AVCHD, and it wouldn't need to transcode it, this not only saves time, it probably looks better, so this would be a super powerful feature of Encore CS5 I really want to take advantage of..
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for the tips..
I changed every file including the name of the project to have no spaces.. I also don't have any breaks in my sequence, I'm not using a timeline, I'm just importing the sequence straight into Encore...
I don't think the GTX 295 thing could be related the only issues I'm having are in Encore, not Premier Pro..
But I guess the news now is that everything seems to be working pretty well and it looks to be transcoding, but I keep getting a:
"Blu-ray Object: Sequence 01/Cozumel_2010.prproj, Export file not found"
The Sequence part is obviously the name of my project file..
I've been trying to read about why this would come up, but no one seems to have an simple answer.. I've cleaned the media cache and renamed the project, but the old project name gets the same error..
And here is the point, as stated before, I open the exact same Encore project in Encore CS4, and bingo everything works..

  • Wish list for Encore

I don't see a wish list category here so maybe we could start one.
My number one irritant in Encore 2.0 is the default ON of "Sync Button Text and Name." This in on by default and it should be off or unchecked in my opinion.
I do all my menus in Photoshop and import them into Encore. My buttons are all set. Then when I start assigning buttons to timelines I forget to uncheck this and it screws up my PS buttons by changing them to whatever I called my timelines. I really hate this. Thank goodness for undo, but when a default is never what you use, then the reverse should be the default. At least that's my two cents worth.
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

posted this earlier in another thread until i found out that this is where i should have posted.
    so here is my list:
    1. The ability to import power point slide shows into encore as a slide show. This would make it really handy to import some ones previously created slide show and turn it into a DVD slide show. It doesn't have to do all the fancy animations or transitions, just import the slide shows. Yes I know I can export from power point to jpgs. Have you really looked at the results? Crap is all I have to say. Of course I could recreate them in Photoshop or some other program that lets picture and titling be created. You know how much extra time that step costs?
    2. Could you make a project manager for encore that is similar to the one in premier? I would like to be able to trim the project and remove "temporary files". I especially hate the number of temporary menus that accumulate in the menus folder. I want to be able to back up the necessary files only, not all the junk. it would also be nice if it would grab the video(I) that make up the project and compile them in to the folder that I designate as the new project folder, just like premier does.
    3. its not really to hard to now, but it would be nice if there was some method for telling encore that you are creating an Easter egg. Currently there are a few steps to doing it and it is all manual. It would be nice if you could designate a button as being an Easter egg and then tell encore which choice of ways you want it to handle it. For instance is it just a simple Easter egg where you go on the right direction on a button and viola, you found it. Or is it a button that you go to and it goes to a duplicate menu and then you need to hit the right button a couple of times and then viola, you found it. Any thing to make my DVD creation to have a few less steps.
    6. Another thing that I think encore needs has to do with the flowchart. Give me some zoom on that baby. I like it, but it would be nice if I could zoom out to look at the overall structure.
    7. The ability to normalize the audio across the entire DVD. My wife made a disc and some parts were loud and others were so quiet. It would be nice to not have to do this for each clip before in premier, but leave it till the final stage of DVD production so that it only has to be done once.
    more to come :)

  • Where is the Wish list for Encore 2?

    Hello
I have a few things that I would like to wish for in the next patch / version.
2. Could you please put a tab in the project pane for a list of slide shows, play lists and assets? I actually like the tabs better than organizing by folders.
    4. Can you make a key that would allow me to select multiple files when using the pick whip? Or could we just drag and drop files to a play list or to the box where the end action and such are? The pick whip looks cool, but it is so slow to get things done with it.
    5. its not really to hard to now, but it would be nice if there was some method for telling encore that you are creating an Easter egg. Currently there are a few steps to doing it and it is all manual. It would be nice if you could designate a button as being an Easter egg and then tell encore which choice of ways you want it to handle it. As time goes on and I think of more I will add to this list. If you have an idea put it here, maybe it will end up in the next patch / version.

    > My wish is they get the bloody software to work properly in the first place. There are many inadequacies in the software that I would like to see added, but frankly, this is the WORST product I have ever seen Adobe relese. I cannot produce a single DVD project without it crashing, bugging out, and generally being a pain in the butt. If you see the forums on here, and across the net, you will see I am not the only person voicing this, and I have used $20 software that fares way better than this.
    Hmmm.
I think I will probably be wasting my time here, but things are not as bad as you are making out by a long, long way.
I have personally created many hundred successful DVD projects with Encore, and whilst I have indeed experienced difficulties from time to time, I can assure you the first - and only - time I went across to the Dark Side and used DVDSP, things were considerably worse. Never has Encore taken my Audio files, and muxed them almost to the end & then replaced the audio with complete digital silence! So before you seriously go elsewhere, I would take a long hard look at all the complaints in the Apple forums as well.
As I have pointed out far too many times, the grass may look greener.....but in my experience it seldom - if ever - is. There ois no such thing as bug free software, it's impossible to achieve.
    >but from what I can tell, Encore was a "bought in" product that they absorbed when taking over another company. It seems that maybe it wasn't such a good move after all.
It wasn't a move at all - EncoreDVD is
    i licensed
from Sonic Solutions, and Adobe have not bought Sonic Solutions.
    >My concern is that software companies should not release faulty software. With regard to my hardware, I am a professional graphic and video designer with two high end, quad core workstations that I rebuild with operating systems and upgrade new hardware regularly. They are not used for anything else besides professional software. All files are saved across to a server.
I can see one of the possible problems right away.
Quad core? AFAIK, these systems simply did not exist when Encore was coded. It's quite possible you have a hardware setup that is completely untested. I may be off the mark here though.
    >I am well aware that people use hardware and situations that the developers never envisaged, but that is what Beta testing is all about.
    Twaddle.
Beta testers simply have no chance of being able to test on every possible software/hardware combination. It's not reasonable to try & achieve this - the Beta cycles are (usually) all about making sure the software works properly on the largest number of systems that can be assembled. This is not going to stop people constantly attempting to install & run it on untested combinations though - and to be brutally blunt with you, no professional company would even consider being right on the bleeding edge of current technology without having an older system set up that actually conforms to the system requirements as laid out in the product documentation. For EncoreDVD 2, this is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 1.4GHz for DV
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz or Dual Intel Xeon 2.8GHz for HDV
AMD must have SSE2 instruction sets.
There is no mention at all of Dual Core, or Quad Core CPU here - therefore this has to be considered as untested, and whilst it may work, it will not be guaranteed to work.
There is also NO mention of guaranteed functionality to a server. The specs actually say:
i Dedicated 7200 rpm drive for DV and HDV editing. Striped array (RAID 0) for HD
(This is my personal opinion, not official word from Adobe, I have to add. I do not work for Adobe in any way)

  • Best practices for Flash CS5 and Flash Builder 4 integration?

With Flash CS5's new XFL file structure/format, what's the best way to structure project files for Flash CS5 integration with Flash Builder 4? Flash CS5 autocreates a folder named after the xfl file as the outer container, and then all the assets/xfl within it. Should this folder be used as the project folder for Flash Builder 4, or better to nest the xfl container folder in a "real" project folder? I would presume the latter, since you might have multiple XFL files in one project. I was hoping to see some automatic linkages between document class of the Flash CS5 XFL file and any default ActionScript class created by Flash Builder, but so far I seem to need to specify a document class directly in Flash CS5's environment and making sure that the path to a default class created by Flash Builder is correct.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Most likely, you know that, but just in case, you can integrate new Flash project into existing Flex 4 project  from within the Flash Builder by choosing either Flash Component or Flash Container from the FB Design view. In such workflow Flash Builder opens the Flash CS 4 (I assume that should be the same for CS5) and takes care of the integrating the newly created Flash project into original Flex 4 project.

  • Encore cs5.1 security certificate expired update

How do I get an updated security certificate for Encore CS5.1?

Windows 7 says that the security certificate is outdated, cira. Nov 2012. The program works, but I have to accept the security certificate is out of day and the program can modify this computer. Encore 5.1 is a 32 bit program and Premiere Pro is a 64 bit program. The Account Controls settings is the brakes to programs making changes to the computer/system. This is one of those updates from Microsoft that finally stopped the Premiere Pro from making the Adobe Dynamic Link to Encore due to this certificate being out of date.
Also in the quick launch tray the Encore icon has a Microsoft security shield icon overlaid on it as well. If I turn off the account controls then Premiere Pro will through the Adobe Dynamic Link to Encore works. The only bad thing is that every other program has the same permission. My statement that it is a licensing certificate may be a wrong choice of words, but the fact remains that Adobe may not be supplying the certificate update anymore.

  • Project Settings vs. Encoding and Encore Resolution for BR

I am editing HDV footage from a Canon HV20.  When I setup my project in Pr Pro I used the recommended
default HDV project settings.  Hopefully these are correct.  I will be burning a Blu-Ray disc for the project.
I assume like other products I have used, the best answer here is the native resolution of your source which hopefully is what I am getting.
Now when I render it via media encoder, it asks me for the "frame size"/resolution for the Blu-Ray disc output.
Also when opening a new project in Encore, it asks for similar information.  I am in NTSC land.
I am familiar with the HD standard and resolutions, and the end result of this project is a Blu-Ray disc played on HDTV's.
However what is the best media encoder resolutoin and encore "frame size" settings for a Blu-Ray disc with an HDV source?
I saw several articles and videos from Adobe about these settings and they explain what they are, but not what the recommended selections are.
As a sidenote, once you are working on a project in PP can you change the settings/resolution of the project?
    Thanks,
    BJBBJB1
PS...Did not know which forum to post this in as it straddles all 3 products!!

First, thanks to both of you for your help!  Hmmm, I am sure the confusion is on my end....
Both of you recommend H.264 vs. MPEG 2 for encoding.  If I am rendering a 1 hour 20 minute Blu-ray, for burning Blu-Rays that I need to paly on a white variety of standalone players, what is the better choice and whay?  I was planning on burning to single layer Blu-Ray at best quality. I am also using 5.1 audio.
For the encoder, I was going to use "HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality" as my rendering preset with MPEG2.
However now I am wondering if I should be using H.264?  Harm, you mention it and you also mention "square pixels".  I am familiar with this concept due to my photography work and slide shows vs. video, but where is this "square pixel" setting in the media encoder??
Anna, I appreciate your comment regarding keeping it simple, however, although I am far from a PPro expert, I definitely am into Home Video and understand quality and resolutions, etc., so I want to get the best quality even if I have to do a little work.. So I'll get there.   I see that clicking on that menu item allows you to choose maximum render quality.  I have plenty of RAM but since I am not going SD to HD or SD to HD, perhaps it won't matter much.  However I am confused by the resolution you are showing there, 1440x1080?
As far as my initial question regarding how to setup my encore project, I may have answered it myself by playing around with the media encoder box.  I opened up the drop down advanced section and I see it presents the frame dimensions there.  I would assume I would use the exact same frame dimensions in Encore when setting up my project.
So I guess at this point my only decisions are:
    1) What codec should I use when exporting from PPro?  h.264 or MPEG-2.  If it matters, I am using 5.1 audio also.  (thanks for all your help with that Harm months ago, it works great!).
    2)  What resolution to use in media encoder?
    3)  How do I set square pixels?
    4) Once exported, in Encore, is my assumption correct that I will just use the same resolution as exported from P Pro.
Perhaps that is what Anna was recommending, keep the same resolution and then let Encore render to 1920X1080 however I would want to get all my rendering out of the way during the export process and just keep it all the same in Encore if that is a good workflow.
Thanks again for all the help!

  • Encore CS5 has started freezing on "Preparing project for build..." in disk burn attempt

After routinely burning DVDs with Encore CS5, the program has started freezing after I choose my settings and click "BUILD" on a window that reads, "Preparing project for build..."
I checked for solutions online and read about problems with Quicktime versions after 7.5.5.  So I uninstalled Quicktime and installed the 7.5.5 version.  Still had problem.
I reinstalled Encore.  Still had problem.
Further research suggested I install the Roxio patch
PX Engine 4.18.16a   I installed the patch.  Still had problem.
I reinstalled the latest version of Quicktime v 7.7.4  Still had problem
On my desktop computer, I'm running
    Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
    Intel i7 CPU  930 @ 2.80Ghz 2.80Ghz
    24 GB RAM
    nvidia Quadro GX 4800
Raid config on my data drives
Luckily, I also have Encore loaded as a part of the CS5 suite on a laptop computer, so I transfered the project files to the laptop, which burned the program without a problem.  This tells me the problem is with the program on my desktop and now with the project files.
    LAPTOP:
    Windows 7 Professional - 64 bit
    Intel i7 CPU  2620M  @  2.70 Ghz  2.70 Ghz
    4 GB RAM
    nvidia NVS 4200M
I'd appreciate any suggestions about how to get my desktop to again burn DVDs in encore.
Message was edited by: Dan 101 Just realized that when I reinstalled Encore, I got a message that instructed me to shut down two processes. One was related to Encore, the other was something like dynamiclink.exe. I couldn't find any such process running when I checked the Task Manager, so I couldn't shut it down before I continued with the installation.  Could this be related to the issue?

I am not using any quicktime files.  I started with 1920 x 1080p avi files to build a number of Permiere projects (one for each chapter of a 50 minute DVD, then converted these segments into H.264 files, (with an .mp4 extension) and built a master Premiere project.  I used H.264 files because it seemed the best option to keep the quality as high as possible before converting to m2v files.  Then I converted the master Premiere project into  m2v and wav files which are being used by Encore.  Should I convert the individual projects into another format (rather than H.264) to build the master project?  Does Encore look at the files converted to m2v from  mp4 as Quicktime files?  Could I avoid this by converting to Microsoft AVI or Uncompressed Microsoft AVI to buld my master project?  I didn't built the entire project into one master premiere project from the start because I was concerned it would be too complex with all the elements and tracks.
Now I can work with Encore and burn files, but the Encore program routinely freezes after I burn a disk.  The Quicktime thing is a puzzle, especially because I stopped getting the freeze when attempting to burn disks after I reinstalled Quicktime 7.6.5. I was trying a number of things and kept a log.  Now I'm trying to figure out why the program freezes after a disk has burned. I turned off Windows DVD Maker, Windows Media Center, and Windows Media Player, rebooted and turned the features on again, but that didn't seem to have an impact.  Also, when I attempt to make changes to a subtitle track, I see the changes in the subtitle track, but they don't appear in the burned disk -- unless I delete a subtitle and recreate it.
Does the Roxio PX engine have any bearing on this?

  • Encore CS5 crashes on importing  _sessionFiles....ac3 for blu-ray.

    Ok, for starters, I've been using cs3-4-5 for a while to create DVDs, no problem whatsoever. Even with ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link). I've been able to burn 1 perfect blu-ray project, it was on a fresh install of CS5. Since then Encore CS5 keeps freezing when re-importing the files right after the transcoding. It always freezes at the same place on many different projects;
    The filename is: _sessionFiles_Asf_session_1_audio.ac3
I've tried many things: run as admin, holding ctrl/shift/alt on startup, cleaning cache. I even used the compressed files from the transcoded folders. My audio and video are of the same length. I just re-installed the suite today just to try it again on a clean install.
I've also tried the audio as pcm:

I was able to burn a blu-ray disc with my latest project but not without any hassles!!! I had to remove all audio from the menus except the main one. The software allows me for 1 menu with audio along with my main timeline. If I add audio to another menu, it crashes.
My project is a 4cam live show with 1 audio track.
The source format is from my HDV Camera. So it's a .m2t file.
The audio track is from the soundboard, a .wav file.

I've done another project and have encountered the same problems. So what I do now is main menu with audio, rest of the menus no audio.
I like Encore coz I can do popmenu with it, other softwares don't offer it. With other softwares I can do a perfect blu-ray with audio on all menus but no popmenu. That's why I'm working so hard to try to resolve the errors with Encore, so I can have projects with popmenu!!! If other softwares would allow for popmenu I would drop Encore.

  • Encore CS5.5 New Install crashes when I assign a drive to the project - Win7

Encore CS5.5 open fine but when I have assigned a drive and named the project then enter, it crashes with this error:
    "Microsoft C+++
    Runtime error
    Program: C:\Pr....
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
Then when I chose OK it says "the application has stopped running and Windows will search for a solution" of course it can't find one and so it closes the program.
This is a new install and the first time I've tried to run Encore on this new computer.
I've been editing in Premiere and exporting out thorugh AME just fine, but now I need to make a DVD and Encore won't stay open because of this error.
I've tried opening to another drive beside the raid but I get the same error.
I also have a Matrox MO2 aqttached but that doesn't seem to be a problem with Premiere either.
    Can you help?
This is Win7 on an Asus P9X79 MB with Intell i73930 and 16 gigs of ram.

    >This is a new install and the first time I've tried to run Encore
Have you checked to see if there are any updates for Encore?
All Adobe updates start here and select product, read to see if you need to install updates in number order, or if the updates are cumulative for the individual product http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
Have you also made sure Win7 is updated?
And, some other things to check...
As well as the below, right click the Encore icon and select Run as Administrator, which is NOT the same thing as running the computer with the Administrator account, and which fixes several "odd" problems... To create a two layer DVD (or a BluRay?), you MUST have Encore set to use the Run as Administrator option

  • Encore CS5 freezes opening project

I am running Production Premium CS4 and CS5 on Vista Business 32-bit.
I can't use the Dynamic Link in Encore CS5 as I don't have After Effect CS5 or Premiere Pro CS5 installed so I've created a new project in Encore CS4, imported footage from an After Effects project and saved the project. I then try to open the project in Encore CS5 and it freezes at 13% of the 'opening project' popup box every time.
Can anyone suggest how I might resolve this problem? Thanks.

Just did a search for this problem as my progam also started to hang all of a sudden - at 13% while opening.
I figured it might have been something to do with my clearing out the massive Adobe cache last night. (Useful to do if you suddenly find that you're missing hard drive space and it's not the shadow files. Look in hidden file AppData Adobe Common....)
Anyway, after reading this post, I opened the Premiere Pro file that was used to create the film file originally (even though I never exported this file directly to Encore. I used Media Encoder first.)
As soon as the file loaded in Premiere, the Encore problem resolved. (I had tried it several times before with no luck.)
I didn't need to go back into the Cache folder or rename anything.

  • C7 breaks down after choosing the resolution for a new project

    Hello Community,
finally I succeeded in installing C7 on my MacBook Pro with Mavericks 10.9. But it breaks down every time after I choose the resolution for my project. The beachball appears for one second and then C7 breaks down.
On the same MacBook I can open C7 on another account. But I want to use C7 on my account.
Has anybody expereienced the same problems?
Has anybody a solution for my problem?
    Cheers,
    Tom

    Hi there,
can you please try deleting preferences by using the "CleanPreferencesMac" present in the Captivate installation location/Ultils folder, relaunch Captivate and see it resolves the issue or not.
    Thanks,

  • How do I best compress a multi file project in Encore CS5 to fit a standard DVD?

    Hello,
I have created a series of small films in Final Cut Pro X, they have been exported as seperate audio and video tracks, ac3 audio and mpeg video from the presets in FCPX.
I want to use Encore CS5 to create DVDs out of them and I have used it before but only know the basics. The problem is that after I import all the media files, that I want on the first DVD, as assets and put them on the timeline it adds up to 7.23 GB, even though the time is just under 2 hours. I know that that might be pushing it a little bit in regards to the amount of time that I can fit on a regular 4.7 GB DVD, but it should't take up that much space. I removed a bunch of files from the timeline to see what I could fit and only got just under 1 hour. I can see that it is possible to decrease the file sizes, for instance by going to 'file'-'edit quality presets' and doing stuff there, but 'm not sure of the best way to do that.
In other posts I have seen mentions of encore compressing files to fit automatically, but what i want is a way to fit all the video files, not the audio i guess, to a dvd with minimum quality loss. does anyone know the best way to do this?
the only thing i can think off is either to use more DVDs than I feel that I should have to, or to burn a 7.23 GB image and then shrink that using soomething like DVD shrink, but that seems unecessary.
So I have a feeling that there is a smart way to do this and would appreciate any help.
    Thanks. Nik

    hello,
Firstly: John, if I export as a .mov and then import to Encore and transcode there will that mean that the file will be shrunk with minimum quality loss? because the .mov file i get using a simple movie export is massive.
below follows my findings and more questions. I suppose I should maybe be moving over to a FCPX & Compressor 4 forum. I think I need to do some studies on Bitrate here.
I tried the option of automatic transcoding in Encore to fit all files on a DVD and the results weren't terrible, in fact they are almost good enough, but not quite. it's sequences with fast movement that really are affected. So Stan, not much difference.
the problem is that the footage i am working with is pretty poor quality to start with. I am working with a bunch of Super 8 family films that have been scanned on to DVDs.
In FCPX a film that is 32 Min Pal SD 25p surround sound keeps coming out way to big. Below are some examples:
-When I export directly from FCPX as a movie (.mov) with the simple export settings and 'keep current settings' the file ends up being a massive 11.16 GB! With all other setting options the file is also expected to be very big ranging from something like 2.3 GB to 23GB.
-When I send it to Compressor 4 and choose the 'SD video sharing' option for uploading online it ends up at 1 GB. These are the settings and summary:
    Name: SD Video Sharing
Description: SD for upload to web sharing sites such as YouTube and Vimeo
    File Extension: mov
Estimated size: 783.36 MB/hour of source

        Temporal quality: 50
        Min. temporal quality: 25

-When I export the film under the standard DVD export settings I get two files and sizes, one for audio (.ac3) 108.4 mb and one for video .m2v 1.89 GB. The general video setting summary follows:
    Name: MPEG-2 for DVD
Description: MPEG-2 elementary stream for DVD Authoring

    Estimated size: 1.89 GB

well thanks for the help both of you. it seems that outputting way too big files might be one of the many annoying bugs of FCPX.
