Project Server or Project Online

Since we do not have SharePoint and it's not coming soon, what options do we have for Project Server or Project Online?  Will either work without SharePoint?
The biggest need for project management is to allow the staff assigned to tasks to be able to update their portion of the project.  More and more of our project managers are using MS Project Professional at their desks.   Any recommendations?

Doug:
Project Online/Project Server are SharePoint applications. You cannot have one without the other. If you are not familiar with these technologies, I suggest that you consider at least discussing your direction with a certified partner. It may be that you
can accomplish what you want using Project Pro and SharePoint online with Project Online. You can synchronize an individual Project with a SharePoint task list and users can update their assignments in SharePoint. If you need Enterprise features, cross-project
reporting, resource management and the like, Project Online is the way to go.

  • Allow collaboration on un-published / checked-in project on Project Server 2013 and Project Online

    Hi All,
Before a project is officially published specific resources in the project team need to be able to "collaborate" i.e. create tasks, change dates, etc. before the project is published. The complication is that we need this collaboration to happen
on un-published / checked-in versions of the schedule. For example, the primary Project Manager adds tasks and makes changes to a published version of the schedule, saves and checks-in the project (doesn't publish), tells a secondary PM to go in and review
the changes, the secondary PM should be able to see the changes the primary PM made, even though the schedule changes weren't published, be able to check-out the schedule, review what the primary PM did, make some more changes, save and check-in the schedule
(again, without publishing it), and tell the primary PM to review. Then the primary PM could go, check-out the schedule, review it, save it, publish it, and check it in.
Can Project Server 2013 or Project Online allow to do this? I looked into permissions and Server settings but I couldn't find anything that would indicate it is possible.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    George

    Hi George,
If you perform some tests, you'll see that even from PWA, the schedule can only be edited from the draft table. When you access the schedule in read only (as a team member for example), you see the published version, but as soon as you edit it (after clicking
on the edit button assuming you have the appropriate permission), you'll open and update the draft version of the project.
As far as I can remember (I don't have it in front of me now), you have a "line" in the schedule PDP (don't know how to call it in english) that will tell you if you are accessing either the draft or the publish version.
    Hope this helps,

  • Development tools for Project/Server Project Online in O365

    Hello,
My company is seeking to unify it's IT PMO using Project Server or Project Online. I notivced that the Project Server certs have been deprecated and the pages ar eno longer available. Does that mean Project Online is the replacement/continuiation of that
    product?
If so, what are some development tools you would advise for me to have to be able to develop/modiify and administrate Project Online in O365?
    Thanks,
    T

    Hi,
Indeed Project Server and Project Online are 2 different products. You have to notice that Microsoft regularly releases new version of Project Server (2003, 2007, 2010, 2013). Some old version feature might be deprecated indeed. Moreover Project Online is
a new version on the Microsoft solution that doesn't require to have on-premise infra.
Note also that Project Onlie is meant to be used quite out-of-the-box whereas Project Server on premise allows you doing custom development.
Below a link for Project Online:

  • Project Online - Schedule PDP disappearing for some Project Owners and Project Server Administrators Group

Current Project Online environment is currently setup with Project Server Permissions Mode. All projects follow a customized workflow that enables Schedule PDP on Planning Phase/Stage, among other rules. For some users the workflow and
expected PDPs are working fine, but for other the Schedule PDP just disappears under unknown conditions, even if they are part of the Administrators Group. Has anyone come across these behaviour?
    Saludos!

As you said they belongs to Admin group it means they have required permission still double check the permission assigned to the users.
Also ask those users to try to log in form different system then check is issue is occurring.
If this issue is occurring for few users then this may be because of Browser. check the following :
    1. Open IE then internet options --> Security --> Trusted Site and add your PWA site. then check
    2. If still issue is occurring then click on F12 button then select browser mode as IE 9 then check.

  • Security Groups when in 'Project Server Permissions Mode' - Project Online

    Hi All,
We have Project Online up and running, by default the PWA instance we added to O365 was in "SharePoint Permissions" Mode, we changed to "Project Server Permissions" Mode because of some complex security we need to configure. For some
reason (different from Project Server 2013) Project Online creates a number of Security Groups by default that seem to be duplicates. For example for Administrators there are:
    - Administrators
    - Administrators for Project Web App
    - Web Administrators (Project Web App Synchronized)
    For Project Managers:
    - Project Managers
    - Project Managers (Project Web App Synchronized)
    - Project Managers for Project Web App
And there is something similar for all the groups (compared to Project Server 2013):
I have looked online, with no luck, for some guidance on what all these groups are and if I can delete some of them without causing PWA to crash.
If anyone out there can point me in the right direction / send me some documentation or links it will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Jorge

Hi Jorge, I had the same thing on two different tenants within the last week - one today. I will just clean up the SharePoint groups manually. The ones with the descriptions are the correct Project Server permission mode groups... Hopefully Microsoft will
fix this soon, you could raise a support ticket on your office 365 tenant - support is pretty quick! Paul

  • How to migrate Project Server 2003 to Project Online?

    Hi Guys,
    Is it possible to migrate Project Server 2003 to Project Online directly? I heard we normally have to take 3 hops for this;
    1. Project Server 2003 - Project Server 2007 migration.
    2. Project Server 2007 - Project Server 2010 migration.
    3. Finally, Project Server 2010 - Project Online migration.
Is there a migration tool we can use to simply jump from Project Server 2003 to Project Online?
    Thank You,
    Arnel

NO, directly you can not migrate. You have to follow the sequence
    1. Project Server 2003 to project server 2007
    2. Project Server 2007 to project server 2010
    3. Project Server 2010 to project server 2013 online.
Unfortunately we dont have nay tool which will help us to do this .
Microsoft has a virtual machine (2007) that you can use to jump to 2007. Basically the databases of 2003 must be converted to 2007. Once this is done (database at 2007) you can use this database as start point to be converted to 2010.
Microsoft has virtual machine for 2010 too if you want you can use it rather than creating your own environment.
Don't use 2007 backward compatibility mode in 2010, we experienced some issues with it.

  • Custom fields with the same name in Project Online

Today I discovered something interesting when creating custom fields in Project Online.
I usually create a certain set of custom fields that are useful to have on both the project and the task level. An example of these is Reportable, which I use to determine which tasks to roll up into reports and also which projects overall to report on.
So I created a project level custom field called Reportable. No problem.
I then created a custom field on the task level called Reportable. And the computer said no!
I then learned that although you could do this in Project Server 2013, you can't in Project Online. You can't have duplicate custom field names, even if they are of different types.
This has led me to use a naming standard, such as Reportable Task and Reportable Project. But I really don't like that as codes are for computers, not us humans. So I hope this changes in the future, but for now you just need to think about how you approach
    the fields.
    Good luck!

    Hi Ryan,
I would follow Ben on this..
Just made a test on a Project 2013 instance on-premise and I cannot create a task ECF and a project ECF with the same name. The same test on a Online instance returns the same result: the ECF names must be unique whatever the entity is.
    Waiting for Ben's confirmation.

  • Importing existing project to Project Online

Hello, my company recently purchased Project Online to add to our existing Office 365 environment.
From the Project Web App home page, I would like to use the Create or Import projects tile to add an existing .mpp project file that I have uploaded to my SkyDrive to Project Online, and manage this project from the Project Web app.
However, I cannot figure out how to do this or if it is even possible. The tile itself says "Create new or import from Sharepoint sites and project files.".  To import an existing project you're then referred to this site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-server-help/more-ways-to-create-or-import-projects-HA102923810.aspx.
On that site the only listed ways of importing an existing project are to import a Sharepoint task list (not what I want) or by connecting your local Project Pro to Project Online and publishing the project.
Importing or uploading an existing project file directly to Project Online would seem to be a fundamental basic usage of Project Online. Do I really need to also purchase Project Professional in order to import existing project files to Project Online?
    Thanks

Project Online cannot read mpp files, hence the reason for requiring Project Professional 2013 if you want to import these into Project Online - even if you only want to manage them via Project Web App from then on.
If you've not got Project 2013 Pro, you could cut and paste the existing task list from Project into a SharePoint list, and create the project from there.
The way forward will depend on the complexity of your schedules, remember that PWA does not have all of the capability of MS Project 2013

  • Project Online 2013 Licenses/Subscription

I am actually new to the  Project Online 2013 ( not the project server )  So have a question regarding the correct subscription for my users.
A bit background, we are trying to implement a Project Portfolio Management solution at our organization and we are researching to see if Project Online is a good fit.
I currently brought Project Online with Project Pro for Office 365
    which has the following licenses
    1) Project Pro for Office 365
    2) Project Online
    3) Office Online
    4) SharePoint Online ( plan 2)
I got 4 user licenses for the above subscription where the Users have access to PWA and can create projects and do stuff.
We are planning on implementing it as an integration of SharePoint Online & Project. So now we are having our other team members who not PM's or Portfolio Managers who needs access and I am not sure what license to buy for them.
    1) SharePoint Online (Stand alone) : If they will be just working on the project sites / Team sites Do I need to get SharePoint Online Subscription so that they can have access to the tasks.
    2) Project Lite : If I get this license will my team members be able to access the PWA and even the SharePoint online sites, Will it cover both the options of Enterprise Project Types & SharePoint Task List Project Types.
I think I should go with option 2 of buying Project Lite for my Team Members but wanted to make sure if this is the right Subscription to buy.
Can anyone help me with this?? I tried contacting Microsoft Support through phone but they weren't able to help me or they created a ticket and I am waiting on their specialist to contact me.
But any help is appreciated. Thanks

    Hello,
For the Team Members to access the Project Sites and certain pages in PWA (Timesheets / Tasks etc.) the Project Lite license will be fine. See the links below for details:

  • Project Online vs EPM Live

    Hi there,
I'm looking for a Project Management software online - Cloud based.
I came across EPM Live and it seems good. But now Microsoft come out with Project Online which really looks promising.
I would like to hear from someone who had used any of them before.
Also any resources or link would be appreciated. Also let me know if you have used  EPM Live before and whats your taught.
    Thanks in Advance

Do you want to be on the Microsoft bandwagon, or do you think a niche provider can serve your needs? When you choose Project Online, you are getting an entire platform of services with integration across the Microsoft stack.

  • Project Online Resource Management

We will be using project online for Resource Management - managing the workload on many machines - and do this function across the team collaboratively.
I was wondering how resources are managed in Project online. After loading tasks on my resources/machines , I need to be able to see/view how much workload is distributed on these resources/machines and if I can assign a pending task to the resource or shuffle
    the work around.
I would like to use 2 project pro and 2 project lite licenses to manage resources/machines.

    msayani2 --
Firstly, all of your people and machines need to b entered in the Enterprise Resource Pool.  For each of the machines you list, enter a Max. Units value that represents 100% multiplied by the number of machines you have.  For example, if you have
three road graders, you would enter 300% in the Max. Units column for a Road Grader resource.
Next, you will need to build enterprise projects, add the required people and machines as team members in the project, assign the resources to each task as needed, and then save and publish each enterprise project.
To see how the workload is distributed for your resources, navigate to the Resource Center page and select the resources whose assignments and availability you want to study.  At the right end of the Resources ribbon, click the Resource Availability
button.  On the Resource Availability, select the time range you want to use and you can then see the availability of your selected resources.  You can also click the Resource Assignments button to study how the resources are being used on tasks
across all projects in Project Server.
    Hope this helps.

  • Log file in project online

    Hallo,
I Need crate a log file which will contain all transactions made by project online users.
    how can i do that.

    Hello,
It depends what level of detail you are after? You could exact the Project Server queue log each day if you using the APIs, you could create a console app that runs on a windows schedule task and uses the PSI to exact the queue details. An simple example
of this for on-premise using PowerShell and the PSI can be seen below:
    https://pwmather.wordpress.com/2012/03/05/projectserver-2010-2007-high-level-audit-export-via-powershell-msproject-ps2010-epm/
You would just need to probably move this to a console app and get the authentication working for Project Online and the PSI - all doable.
Alternatively if you wanted more details than what goes via the queue services, you could create you own remote event receivers for Project Online to capture the details.

  • What soft do I need to use Project Online?

I would like to use Project online. What soft do I need to install?

    Hi,
You have the choice to install or not MS Project Pro 2013 in order to schedule your project with the Office 2013 Project software. You'll just have after the installation to connect MS Project Pro 2013 to your PWA instance in order to open your projects.
Note that you might choice not to install MS Project Pro 2013, since you can use the web interface (Project Web Access or PWA) to edit your project plan, evenif the web interface has a few scheduling limitations.

  • Authentication using CSOM with Project Online

How are we to connect to Project Online with CSOM? All the SDK articles do not include any type of authentication. So if we are trying to use the CSOM to list out projects, and I try to create a credentials object and pass that to the ProjectContext.Credentials,
how would this work with the Project Online solution?
If I try to use the standard network credentials, I get "(403) Forbidden" when I pass in my onmicrosoft.com account and password for credentials. I am the admin on my instance.
So a little help on understanding how to connect remotely to Project Online via CSOM would be great.
Here is a sample PowerShell script I am using. Same result in C# too:
    Add-Type -Path 'C:\Sync\Microsoft EPM\Scripts\Microsoft.ProjectServer.Client.dll'
    $credentials = Get-Credential "[email protected]"
    $pwaPath = "https://bossnunyatest.sharepoint.com/sites/pwa"
    $projContext = New-Object Microsoft.ProjectServer.Client.ProjectContext($pwapath)
    $projContext.Credentials = $credentials
    $projContext.Load($projContext.Projects)
    $projContext.ExecuteQuery()
    #Receive (403): Forbidden although I am admin
    #This works fine against OnPrem
    $projContext.Projects|select Id,Name
    Thanks,
    Kirk

Project Online is a part of SharePoint. Programmatically accessing Project Online uses the procedures that are described in the Office and SharePoint app development SDK; see
Build apps for SharePoint.  PowerShell can be used to administer Project Server 2013 (Windows
PowerShell cmdlets for Project Server 2013); I don't know of a way that PowerShell could be used with the CSOM for Project Online.
App development with the CSOM requires Visual Studio 2012 with the Office and SharePoint tools and other client components installed. See
How to: Set up an environment for developing apps for SharePoint on Office 365. The simplest way to start is to create a SharePoint-hosted app; the other app types require using
OAuth. The procedures for Project Online are essentially the same as described in How to: Create a basic SharePoint-hosted app, except you'd provide the URL of your PWA site
instead of the URL for SharePoint, and instead of the SP.ClientContext, you use
    $(document).ready(function () {
    var projContext = PS.ProjectContext.get_current();
    var pwaWeb = projContext.get_web();
    ... and in the Default.aspx page, set a reference to PS.js, e.g.
    <script type="text/javascript" src="/_layouts/15/ps.debug.js"></script>
