Project suddenly freezing as if I had too little ram!

Am on a deadline editing a project that's about 2 hours. I'm a little over an hour into it, it's a one-camera of a performance, and I'm mixing three sources of sound (left/right of mics into camera as well as some wav files recorded using a Zoom digital recorder). Everything's been going fine, and now suddenly I can't get past
a certain point. It just freezes and then crashes.
I can't even go back and play earlier parts which were working fine. It starts to play, freezes, but the time line marker is still moving forward, then starts again, then stops... Then after a while I can play it again, but can't play more than a few seconds.
Any ideas? Something went seriously south on me and I don't have a clue.

I am starting to think that my firewire drive, where I have some of the footage for this project (and others), is failing! That's because all of my projects are suddenly having this problem...and I notice when I open finder and click around, there is a serious lag when opening directories on the firewire drive. The rest seem okay. So I am going out first thing and buying a new one, moving everything over!
And yes, source footage on a different drive (actually different drives) than OS S... Video is HDV. Not a free space problem, thanks.

Qosmio X300 - Windows shows too little RAM

Dear all,
I have just bought X300 with 4GB memory. When I looked at the "Physical Memory" in the Windows Task Manager, it has only 1789Mb physical with 1056 Cached. It that normal?
I have also installed "All CPU Meter" for Windows sidebar... it shows the same thing.
Is it true that if you set your virtual memory to another drive (not c:), it will improve the performance.

Why?
Well, the physical address space is used to address more than just RAM. Its also used to address all of the memory and some of registers presented by devices. So if a notebook or computer is configured with the maximum of physical memory, some of that memory will be unusable because some of the physical address space is mapped for other uses.
The following components require memory address space:
- Integrated PCI devices such network cards
- Graphic cards
- Sound cards
However, to use 4GB or more RAM, you must install a 64bit OS like Vista 64bit.

Compaction error since old issue of too little free space........

I continue to have an issue with apple Mail. This started when I had too little hard drive free space. I have now upgraded and added an external hard drive with 2 partitions and have deleted a ton of stuff from my original 8.5gig hard drive to leave me with about 3gigs of free space. I began using Carbon Copy Cloner to back everything up on a weekly basis. Now my issue is that e-mails wont delete and mail will shut down occasionally. It will also give me "compaction errors" and revert the mailbox to original settings. I have tried all of Allan Sampsons suggestions, like going to Applications/Library/ etc. and moving the Inbox to my desktop. etc. etc. etc. ALL has not helped and is just seeming to compound the issue....things keep getting worse. Until just the last few days I was also having shut down issues and "sleep" issues. I ran disk utility and this seems to have been cleared up. I really believe that I have some corruption in my Mail program and would like to remove Mail and reinstall it fresh. Does anybody have any other suggestions? I think I can reinstall with no problem, but I'm unclear how to remove the old corrupted version of Mail. Could someone give me other suggestions or help me through the removal of the corrupted old Mail?

Deleting and re-installing the Mail.app rarely resolve this or any problem.
All Mail.app data is stored in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail and all email account information and general Mail.app settings are stored in the Mail.app preference file.
Since your hard drive did not have adequate free hard drive space required for OS X to function properly until recently, it sounds like some of your mailboxes (mbox files) have some corruption (not the application itself). If so, re-installing the Mail.app will not resolve this since no data is stored in the application.
Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Move the entire Mail folder to the external hard drive for later use.
Launch Mail and a new Mail folder and account named folders within will be created automatically. All mailboxes will be empty and any created rules and signatures will not be available along with Junk Mail "learned" settings lost but this will determine if the problem lies within the old Mail folder which I believe it does.
If this allows the Mail.app to function properly, you can use the Import Mailboxes function to import selected mailboxes from within the old Mail folder moved to the external hard drive and I would import only a number of available mailboxes at one time since one or a number of the existing mailboxes probably have some corruption due to the lack of free hard drive space you had previously.

Well, if the internal hard drive is no longer readable, there's pretty much nothing anyone here can do about it. There are no magic words that will fix a hardware problem.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and have it looked at.

Premiere pro project suddenly degraded

My 50-minute Premiere Pro project suddenly degraded between work sessions. It contains mixed footage - mov files the smallest and the sequence settings match that - and dv footage.
It looked perfect, but when it was opened to resume work on another day them image quality had degraded badly. When rendered It plays ok but is degraded in pause. Color correction is now impossible.
I hope you can help.

For starters, you can't perform a proper color correction using the built in monitors. They are not designed to show you an accurate image, as you're now discovering. You MUST get the signal off the computer and onto a properly calibrated TV. This will ensure you're seeing the signal accurately, which is the first step in color correction. Trying to remove too much red that was put there by an inaccurate display is an exercise in futility.
Having said that, click the wrench under the Program Monitor and make sure Playback Resolution is set to full.

Sudden FREEZING issues!

As of today, my macbook keeps suddenly freezing up. The mouse won't move, none of the hot keys work, and when it did momentarily unfreeze, it wouldn't even restart properly because it froze up mid-process. Why is it doing this?? I know I need to bring it into a genius but with it being a holiday weekend, I don't foresee having the time to do so. I've been backing it up too and I know there is plenty of memory still so what gives??

Based on your description, I had a very similar experience with my old iBook G4. How's the battery life on your Mac? On my iBook, I noted that I had far far fewer freezing issues when it was powered from the mains. This was confirmed by the fact that my Mac was completely dropping dead while on battery.
Alternatively, check your RAM is seated properly and that it isn't going bad (Rember is a good app for this). Likewise, check your HD isn't about to go bad (I use the freeware app Onyx).
Failing that, go see the Genius...! I'd be interested to know what Apple thinks the issue is.

Your hard drive's directory structure can get messed up when forcing the computer to shut down. It's a good Idea to get DiskWarrior and run that periodically to rebuild the hard drive's directory. It's like a preventive maintenance.
ALso, sometimes the Disk Utility will not repair the drive because the directory is too messed up. That's when DW does it's magic.

Elements 10 project slideshow freezes during output

Elements 10 project slideshow freezes during output. When writing to CD it freezes about 70%. When output to hard drive is selected, it freezes around 39%. This is a show I have been working on for a few days. It has been working but can no longer use the output feature.
O/S: Windows 7
I downloaded the trial of Premiere and the show outputs without any problems. I don't really want to buy another program. Can anyone think of a solution?

a lot of that didn’t apply and I’m not tech savvy enough to figure the rest out... but. I uninstalled elements and elements premier, I didn’t realize this allows you to de-activate as part of the uninstall process, in e9 I de-activated from the toolbar. I saved my projects folder from my catalog to a disk. When I re-installed everything and loaded my projects I was able to open my slide show. I also “refreshed” my Windows 8 because it was having problems as well.
I attempted to save the slide show as WMV again and again if failed, halfway through playback it froze and kept flickering. This slide show is only 4 minutes long with around 30 photos. I had used a different transition between each photo, I changed all but 2 to fade, this time it worked perfectly. I’m strictly an amateur, learning as I go, I intend to watch tutorials and learn more, but does it say anywhere that using multiple transitions in a slideshow can result in problems? I can’t believe it is my PC, I am using a 2 month old Dell XPS 8500 Special Edition, i7 3rd gen., 32Gb memory, Bluray burner, Radeon 7870 graphics with Windows 8, every driver is up to date.

What operating system version, and do you have any backups of your data off the machine? TimeMachine? Option Key bootable clones? Storage? DVD's?
A reinstall of the operating system may be in order as a last resort, so if any of these steps on these links get you into the machine, make sure to backup your personal data (Music, Pictures, Documents, Movies) off the machine to a non-encrypted powered external drive regular storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted too) and disconnect as soon as possible.
Good Luck and report back all what you tried.
Also report what change occured before this tragedy happened, was there a Software Update? A EFI firmware update? Etc.

To boot off the 10.6 install disk, hold c or option key while the disk is in the machine.
To boot into 10.7 Recvoery mode, hold the command and r keys down while booting.

K7N2-ILSR Sudden freezing due to onboard sound

I have had a few problems from the start with the K7N2-ILSR, i have overcome them all except my machine freezes when the onboard sound is enabled. I do not have any other cards in my machine except for my Geforce4.
The problem will only occur when the onboard sound has been eneabled in the bios it will happen when you play sound or not it just locks up or restarts!!!
I have read through alot of the posts and i havn't come across any problems that are the same.
Could you please give me some help as i am getting really annoyed with it.

No If i enable onboard sound or install a PCI card i will get a lockup whenever! I don't have to be doing anything it will just suddenly freeze.

I installed win2k on the HDD on IDE1 (Master) after setup finished i added the second HDD on IDE3(Raid) set it to a "0" array.
I am going to try a fresh install onto my HDD on IDE3 (Raid) with WINXP chosing the Raid option in setup then install all the latest drivers from nvidia and so on.... The only problem i have is time or lack of!
i have ran the memtest86 V3.0 and i din't get any errors but i ran the test while i had dual ram setup. I will try again seperately.
I have also changed my DDR settings to 333 to match the CPU this has had no effect.
What powersupply would you say is the best? Where to get it from? and how much?

your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro requires 1066 MHz RAM, but you have 1333 MHz RAM installed. Try replacing the 1333 MHz RAM with 1066 MHz RAM — Macs can be picky about the RAM which they find acceptable.

I finished adding my transtions to my timeline. I was having crashing issues so I shut down everything before I rendered the project and now it tells me that the project is unreadable or the file is too new for this version of final cut. What Happened?

What Happened?
No way for us to know. But if your system was crashing, there definitely was a problem. The FCE error message you got normally indicates the FCE project file has been corrupted. This probably happened due to whatever caused your system to crash & shutting down the system.
First, make sure your system is running correctly. Then, use the Finder to navigate to /users/yourusername/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents/Autosave Vault and find the most recent backup copy of your FCE project file. Copy the file to your Final Cut Express Documents folder (copy the file, don't just move it). Then double-click the copy to open it in FCE. It should open ok, but will probably not have your most recent edits (transitions). You may have to rebuild the transitions, but at least you will be back in action.

The laptop suddenly freezes without warning, the screen turns black, while the hard drive apparently stals and the system no longer responds. The only way to resolve this issues is to restart the computer via a hard reset. After restarting, an error message box shows up asking me to report the error, which I've already done on numerous occassions. The problem occurs at a frequency of 1 every 2-3 days, sometimes more often than that. The error message that comes up is very complicated but contains some key words amongst which includes "kernel." This makes me believe that it's an issue with the video card, and was wondering how I can remediate this problem so as to get the normal function of my laptop back. If anyone can be of any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

A barcode scanner that was connected directly to the Mac's USB port stopped working as the "USB had too much power drawn", even though it has worked for over a year in that port. WHen we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why?

When we plugged it into the port on the keyboard, the device works. Why? Obviously the device is operational. Could the USB port have burned out from having too much power drawn? If so, is it reparable?

It can't draw "too much" power, it can only draw as much as the USB port is able to provide and no more. IIRC, the keyboard port has a lower power output than the iMac's port.
That being said, yea, it's possible that the port has failed and it can be replaced or if another port works you can use that one. Although if it is still under warranty or covered by Apple Care, then I would take it to an Apple Store or service provider to get the port repaired.

Reset the PRAM
Reinstall the operating system from the dvd (you will not loose your data)

Project suddenly freezing as if I had too little ram!
