Project X - Turning a Pismo into an iMac

Hi everyone,
Some of you may remember that last year I bought a Pismo with a smashed screen, specifically for the 500MHz processor, RAM and HDD. Well, now I've decided what to do with it - I'm going to make the machine into the world's first TFT iMac G3.
In plain English, I intend to basically bolt the Pismo's logic board assembly to the back of a 15" TFT screen and wire it up to create a desktop Mac. A little ambitious, I know, but it'll be unique. All parts are fully functional bar the screen, so what I really want to do is just reroute the display signals from the built-in LCD to the external. Is there any way I could do this using the internal display connecter, i.e. adapt it to a D-Sub 15-pin connector that would make the external display the primary? I could make do with a wiring diagram for the Pismo's internal display connector.
Failing this, could I disable the internal connector and make the external display connector the primary display without Mirroring?
I would also like to disable the 'Book's battery power system, but removing the Charge card (the thing under the touchpad) results in the machine playing dead i.e. not booting.
I'll most likely build a custom enclosure to hold the workings on the screen (got to find a nice, stylish screen first - anyone got any recommendations? 15-inch, 1024x768 native resolution, reasonably cheap, Apple-like styling?), and try to keep the internal drive bay usable; failing that, I've got a USB drive I can use. The machine runs Tiger 10.4.8 on a 400MHz G3 and 128MB of RAM (and works quite well - I wrote this post on it using Firefox with my CRT monitor and an external keyboard and mouse).
I'll keep you updated of my progress. Wish me luck!
Thanks in advance,
Rob Johnson

Don't worry about taking it apart unless you have an enclosure for it. It doesn't have to be an imac, does it? It would work just fine as a "Mac Mini". Just take the screen off so you have easy access to the power on/off button, plug in a monitor to the VGA Port, and you can use thi built in keyboard and touchpad. If you want it to look even nicer, hide it away, and plug in that keyboard and mouse you were talking about. It would also allow you to have much easier access to the DVD-ROM Drive. If, however, you do decide to go ahead with the rewiring, good luck, as that's not my field of expertise.

The candara font in italics is turning my words into what looks like another language (it's only happening in the italics version).  Does anyone know how to fix it? (I'm running OSX 10.8.3 on a new iMac and the only change I've made recently is to install MS Office for Mac 2011)

This is what the font turns it into (it's supposed to say Chrysler Building & New York Public Library).  The font came with Pages which is what I'm working in.  It worked before but isn't now.

  • How do I move an imovie project on a macbook pro to an imac

I have an imovie project on a macbook pro.  I can't seem to export the movie.  I keep getting processing error -108.  I want to shift my project from my Macbook pro to my Imac.  How do I do this and import into imovie?

    Hi
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
    BTW:
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • Can i plug an usb drive into a iMac and access it with a Macbook pro?

I have an iMac that is less than 3 months old and my wife now has a two week old Macbook Pro.
    IMac:
    21.5" screen
    3.1 quad core i7
    16 GB Ram
    1 TB Fusion drive
    Macbook Pro:
    13" screen
    3.0 dual core i7
    8 GB ram
    512 GB Flash storage
    Both have Mountain Lion.
    Both are running iOS 6.1.2
I would like to attach an external USB hard drive to the iMac and allow the Macbook Pro to be able to have full access to just the external USB hard drive.  Either it can't be done or I am just not getting the Sharing settings set correctly.  I played around with sharing last night on both machines.  When I would plug in a FAT 32 thumb drive into either machine and find it, I would add it to he shared folder but it would only allow me and "Everyone" to have access.  I could not change "Everyone" to "No Access" because "Everyone" was greyed out or add my wife.  I can access the Macbook Pro as Mark with the iMac but I can only access the iMac from the Macbook Pro as a "Guest".
I am using a Netgear WNR3500L router.  I currently have the USB hard drive connected to the router via the Readyshare USB port but it is formatted as NTFS for Windows shared files.  This router does not recognize HFS+ formatted hard drives in the USB port.   When I move it to the iMac, I will back it up and then reformat it as HFS+.  Since the router is about a year old and working fine, I would buy an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule if that is my only choice.
I don't normally turn off the iMac.
I would not want to allow access to any other device.
Since I am very new at Mac's, I would appreciate any help that any of you can offer me.

    Topher Kessler,
    Thanks for commenting to me.
My thumb drive is formatted as Fat 32 so your first paragraph explains what I am seeing.
You are correct that my existing router does not support HFS+.  It is visible from my MAC and some file are read only.
The drive that I will be wanting to attach to the iMac would be formatted as HFS+ so it would not be accessible from my router.
So, if I setup sharing (If it is possible) and thern plugged in a USB 3.0 hard drive into my iMac, would it be accessible to my Macbook Pro?  If it would not be, it looks like an Airport Extreme or a Time Capsule are my only options?
I see that a Netgear 4500 is Time Machine compatible.  Any idea what that means?  When I read pages 80 through 82, it appears to me that you format your drive to HFS+ and then eventually plug it into the router usb.

  • Installed airport card into my imac G4 flat panel and now it work

I purchased an airport card from Mac-pro as Apple does not sell them anymore. I installed it into my IMAC G4 flat panel as per the instructions. Now, when I turn on the computer the power light comes on, and the screen is black and it really isn't making any noise, as though it is not starting up. It was working just fine before I installed this card!!!! can anyone help??!?!?!?!?

The following Apple article provides the details of
installing an AirPort card in the Flat Panel iMac
G4s. You may want to double-check it to see if you
might have missed something in the the installation
    process.
I installed the card properly, as per the instructions you forwarded to me. I did have some trouble getting the card to completly fit into place, one side seemed to go in easier than the other, but it did go in. Is there anyway to get this machine up and running again?

  • I made a Blurb book through Lightroom 5, on another computer, backed it up on an external hard drive and tried to import it into my imac.  I got the picture files, but could not get the book I had worked on.  How do I find my book?

I made a 'Blurb' book using Lightroom on a computer that was not mine.  I backed up the book on an external hard drive and then tried to import the book into my imac.  I wasn't able to retrieve my book.  The photos I used for the book project are there, but the 45 page book I made is not there.
What do I need to do?

You would need to go to the computer containing the book.
Select the saved book in the Collection panel.
Go to Grid View [ G ] and select all the images [Cmd/Ctrl][A]
File>Export as Catalog and store on media you can use to transfer
Bring this catalog onto your computer
File>Import from another catalog and bring the transitory catalog into your master catalog.
It should bring the images, your collections (including your book) and other settings into your own catalog.

Everytime I insert a blank CD into my iMac, it spits it out. How can I fix this so I can burn CDs?

Try using a LensCleaner Disk first off. If that won't even run try a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
Then use the Lens Cleaner again. Make sure your disks are immaculately clean.

  • Turn Windows Phone into a video streaming server (not client)?

I want to stream video from a Windows Phone 8/8.1 device but I'm not sure where to start.  I have done extensive web searching for C# examples or libraries to do this but everything I have found so far covers using the phone as a
    client, not as a source.
I'm guessing I need to turn the phone into an RTSP server? If not, what is the correct technique or starting point for doing this?  Main concerns are that the streaming be smooth and with minimal lag, since the Windows Phone (camera) is mounted on a robot
for remote navigation.  Too much lag or video performance problems and navigation will be impossible.  Any libraries or samples that show how to do this are greatly appreciated.

  • HT1386 When I plug my iPhone into my iMac via USB I can choose to "back up to this computer".  On another sync to my iMac, can I choose to " back up to the iCloud"?  This way I could restore all my info and settings from either source.  Is this possible?

When I plug my iPhone into my iMac via USB I can choose to "back up to this computer".  On another sync to my iMac, can I choose to " back up to the iCloud"?  This way I could restore all my info and settings from either source.  Is this possible?

On the phone, under Settings > iCloud you can select to turn iCloud ON or OFF.
One iTunes, it senses that toggle and if you had selected iCloud it will say backup to iCloud. Here you can change the toggle to backup to computer and click "Apply" prior to syncing.
I do both for good measure. I backup to computer and then after i disengage the device from the computer, I set the iCloud toggle back to ON and then perform the iCloud backup over wifi.
I found that using iTunes and saying to backup to iCloud isn't always successful in the "last backed up" time and thus I do it separately.

  • When I insert an audio CD into my iMac, it automatically starts playing

When I insert an audio CD into my iMac, it automatically starts playing, and I can't figure out why, nor how to stop this behavior. When I click in the upper right corner of my screen where it says "Finder", it shows the Finder as the only application running, and yet SOMETHING must be causing the CD to play. If it is an Extension that is being loaded, is it possible to terminate the Extensions one by one without restarting the computer to see which one is playing the CD?
Is the OS9.1 operating system supposed to automatically play audio CD's when they are inserted into the iMac? Or could it be an Extension that is doing it?And if so, why is no means provided to actually CONTROL the playing of the CD (such as a control panel with PLAY, STOP, SKIP, etc. buttons)?
On a PC, I can press Control/Alt/Delete to bring up the "Task List" that will show me ALL applications and processes currently running, and then terminate apps and processes one by one without having to restart the computer to see which one is playing the CD. Is there an equivalent way to display this information on an iMac that will show me which application or process or extension might be causing the audio CD to play, and allow me to terminate them one by one without restarting the computer until I can see which one is the "problem"?
    Jerry

    Hi, Jerry -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Finder uses QuickTime in the background to do that, hence no specific app is shown in the Application menu (the far right item in the main menu bar) in addition to Finder.
To unset automatic playing of CDs (and DVDs) -
Open the QuickTime Settings control panel (Apple menu > Control Panels > QuickTime Settings).
In that control panel, select AutoPlay from the pulldown menu in the control panel. Uncheck both the items shown in the new window. Close the control panel.
No restart should be needed in order to make the change effective.
Doing this will also guard against the (now ancient) AutoPlay virus, which could still be lurking somewhere on the net.

  • How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?

How do I turn off messages on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite?

    Hi,
    Open the Messages app.
Go to the Preferences item in the app's Menu.
Select the account pane in the Preferences.
Each active account should have a tick in the Enable this Account box.
    This can be unticked.
This will stop accounts logging in but will not stop the app Launching in certain circumstances.
First of all check the app is Quit before shutting down the computer.
The fact the app is open even if all windows are hidden can cause the app to restart when you Start up the computer.
Messages is a  Multiple window app and using the red button on the top left of a window only closes that window and does not Quit the app.
Also check the System Preferences > Users and Groups > your account > Login Items tab.
This will list items that are set to Start up when the computer does.
I have a couple of External Drive on other computers, some Anti Virus software and the common iTunes Helper plus an old version of TextExpander that will work if I launch the Preference Pane this way.
