Projects thumbnails disappearing?

Using iMovie 08, after I've been working awhile on a project by dragging and dropping clips from the events browser into the projects browser, the thumbnails for the project don't show up. It's a completely grey area in the thumbnails section of the project.
It can be remedied by fiddling with the slider at the bottom of the project pane that adjusts the size/length of the thumbnail, but only after sliding it back and forth for quite awhile and then it's not always at the size I want then.
Another semi-remedy has been to click on another project for awhile and then click back to my first project. Doesn't always work, however.
I'm thinking maybe it only happens to the longer projects, although I haven't made anything over 20 minutes ever (and do want to go longer eventually)?
VERY frustrating.
Any ideas why it has started doing this and help as to how to fix it?
Thanks, Deborah

This seems to be a problem that occurs when memory gets too full and there are too many swap files all at once. A quick solution is to Quit iMovie and restart it. (This resets the iMovie swap files and frees them from memory). It will work even better to reboot your Mac (this resets all swap files). You also may want to consider purchasing additional memory.
There is a free utility that you can get for your Mac that lets you see the state of your swapfiles. It is called Memory Stick. It is available here. When you notice that you have 6 or more swapfiles and you are doing a lot of paging in and out, it is probably time to either reboot or buy more memory,

i was editing vacation photos in aperture 3 all of a sudden the thumbnail disappeared and now all i have is a vertical white line and an orange flag... how do i get my photo back?  thanks

         Hi Frank.
I have just had jb Atlanta's problem while adjusting the contrast on a photo. I was creating a slideshow at the time. After a lot of reading up I was about to give up when I tried restoring the file to its original settings as you suggested. Bingo!
However, that would only work for me, if I restored the settings while in the slideshow. All data had 'disappeared' when I attempted to open the photo in its original project folder.
Hope this is of help. Many thanks.

  • IMovie '08 Thumbnails disappear

I am a recent Mac convert and defintley need some help figuring out how to troubleshoot anything on this machine.
When dragging clips longer than 5 minutes into the top (project?) screen all the thumbnails disappear... randomly. If I adjust the interval of the thumbnails (from 10s to 5s or from 10s to 30s, for example) they sometimes come back, but it is definitly not a reliable solution. In general it is a HUGE pain when editing my videos. i can drag my mouse over the area where the thumbnails used to be and it plays the video as if the thumbnails were there... but i can't see them. I'm left feeling around in the dark trying to drop my clips in the correct place. So frustrating!
    Help!
I had this problem on a couple different machines, my brother's MBP and my new iMac. Is there a way to get rid of it for good, or am I going to need to upgrade to Adobe premier or final cut to avoid this ridiculous glitch?

I still have not downloaded the huge OS update. In the meantime the following (forcing iMovie to recreate the thumbnail files from scratch) may help (I had some slightly different problems so dont count on it):
    Close iMovie.
Go to the Movies folder for the user with the missing thumbnails. Go to the iMovie Events folder and then the specific Event folder for the event(s) with the corrupted thumbbails. There should be a "Thumbnails" folder - move this (ont delete it yet kust in case this does not work).
When you restart iMovie it will spend a few minutes (or more if you had a lot of clips) recreating the thumbnails.

  • IMovie 10.0.2 The iMovie unexpectedly quit and after restarting it projects were disappeared

iMovie 10.0.2 unexpectedly quit and after restarting it  2 (out of 3) projects were disappeared. However I can see "All Projects - 1 of 3selected". I am quite disapointed!!!

    No, I did not.
Meanwhile I have found the reason for the projects disappear in my libraries! The problem is caused by using the dash "#" symbol in my project names.
I have created another project with a dash in the name and the project also disappeared in iMovie with the same effect that the underlying data was still in die library.
Apple should release a warning that some special characters are not allowed to be used in project names or better should solve this.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Thumbnails disappear

why  do the thumbnails disappear in iphoto for the iphone 4 when you put the privacy mode on sometimes is it a glitch or its a way to do it

The thumbnails have not disappeared.  In the first screen you have displayed the apps for which there are privacy settings on your phone.  You have then tapped on PHOTO and the second screen gives you details of settings of apps on your phone for which you have not allowed access to your photos.  I do not see a problem here

  • Iphoto thumbnails disappear with each reboot

My iPhoto thumbnails disappear any time I reboot or log out of iPhoto.
I use the rebuild command and get them back, but they don't  stay.
Is this a problem with iPhoto or the address where the thumbnails are stored?

My iPhoto library is in the correct location on my laptop hard drive.
This all started with editing photos.
I backed up to time machine, then deleted @350 photos from a recent download.
iPhoto froze up with this, and I did a force quit.
Re opening iPhoto came back with all black thumbnails.
I option-command opened iPhoto and rebuilt the data, and the thumbnails.
The photos are there, but every time I log out of iPhoto, the thumbnails are gone again, and I have to rebuild.
So...  I restored from a journaled copy of iPhoto photos, from time machine.  The problem persisted.
To restore however I had to move my iPhoto library (30 Gigs)  to an external hard drive because I did not have enough
room on my hard drive to restore from time machine.
The data is all there, but the thumbnails just won't  persist.
    I think it is haunted.
    thanks

  • Events and project thumbnails missing after moving to new computer

I just helped a friend to move to a new Mac. I have copied all her personal data to her new computer, so iMovie Events and Projects are present in her new Movie folder. However, after opening iMovie '08, all events and project thumbnails are missing. How could this be? Is there perhaps some library file that keeps track of all this that I need to copy as well? Is there a way to re-link iMovie with the events folder?

    Try this:
First, make sure you've quit out of iMovie. Then go to your Movies Folder > iMovie Events > and then into the folder of the even that's giving you trouble. Drag the folder "iMovie Thumbnails" to your trash. Then open the folder "iMovie Cache" and drag the file "Cache.plist" to the trash. Restart iMovie. It should rebuild the thumbnails, and by regenerating the .plist file, it should have the data it needs to reed the new thumbnails into iMovie.
It worked for me. Hopefully it will work for you too.

  • Thumbnails disappear in Grid

I have used LR since v1.0 with every single update in between and never had any major issues with LR including out-of-memory erros, upside-down red text on pics, adj. brush performance, now ahve run into this problem.
Thumbnails disappear just before the final high-quality pass. Scrolling out and into view make them redraw, just to disappear again together with the three dots. The neweste thread on the topic I was able to find was dated Sep, 2007: Grid thumbnails disappear after 1/2 second . It didn't solve my problem.
    Some observations:
The problem only affects JPEG images, all other work fine.
Filmstrip is not affected, only grid view.
It's only when the thumbnail info includes the file extension, both in compact and extended mode. (see screenshot 1 and 2)
Metadata panel info is not shown for affected images. Keywording panel is fine.
Synchronize folder fails (does nothing) if the folder has at least one JPEG.
Exporting to a new catalog doesn't cure the problem.
Importing images into a fresh catalog does solve the problem.
    Trashing prefs, TranslatedStrings.txt doesn't help.
Since the only thing that helps is a fresh catalog, my conclusion is catalog corruption. Unfortunately this is not an option for me: too many collections, VCs, flags and stacks lost. I need to cure the catalog. Binary, the catalog seems to be fine — it's been optimized and it passes the integrity test. Also I have opened it with 3rd party utilities (SQLiteSpy).
I attached a small catalog (change extension from .txt to .zip, sorry) with 1 image that exhibits the problem. It was exported form my main catalog.

    DonRicklin wrote:
Actually, though she will likely pass them on it is Daniel Tull at Adobe that has been investigating and repairing Catalogs. He can be contacted at dantull at gmail.com to see if he will still take one and how to send it.
That's what I did and, voila, my catalog is healty again! :-)
For the record, Daniel found that this behaviour was caused by a null value in the sidecarExtensions field of the AgLibraryFile table in the catalog. It has to be an empty string ("") rather than null, otherwise Lightroom goes nuts. Why was is null? Because I did it myself, stupid me. Too much fooling around with my own catalog.

  • Strange Problem -- Thumbnail disappears and I can't open the photo.

Please help. Just upgraded to V1 last night (a few bumps but everything's up and running, lot of work to do still reorganizing my library) and one of my five-star rated photos is acting strange. I can see the thumbnail in the library when I scroll through the folder, but as soon as I try to open it it disappears and blank space is left in the grid where it once was. if I remove the cursor and scroll, the thumbnail shows up again, but I can't get that picture selected! I though it might need to be reconnected so I tried to reimport, but it told me the image was already in the library and asked me if I wanted to open it. When I said yes, it showed me the thumbnail but then the thumbnail disappeared again when I tried to open it!
any thoughts? I need this picture.
    many thanks.
    Dave

mine are raw. i don't want to delete the folder because I have lots of edits on other images in the folder that I don't want to lose. fortunately, I was able to find another image in that sequence that suited my purpose so I re-edited that and used it. one nice thing is that with cloning/healing I didn't have to go into photoshop at all! :) but that other image is still acting strange....

  • Unable to Update Project Thumbnail - Disk May Be Full

When I open iMovie, all of my projects have an alert message indicating "Unable to update thumbnails for project 'XXXXX.rcproject'. Your disk may be full." Thankfully when I say OK to each alert message my project thumbnails do appear and each project appears to be ok. Any thoughts on how to get rid of the alert messages?
    Thanks

I have had the same issue, but it does not appear that others have answered. Wondering if you have received any answers independently? I have an Elgato 250 plus and an iMac 27" computer for background. I also sent a query to Elgato last evening - no response as of yet though.
"I have successfully recorded through my eyeTV 250 plus older home movies that had been recorded in several formats (VHS tapes, 8mm cassette tapes, some DVDs where I recorded some old tapes via a Panasonic HDD, and in some cases I had to use the Master DVD RAM disks as some of the original tapes were degraded. They transferred successfully as eyetv recordings.
Next I exported these to iMovie. In total there were 90 recordings that I made. Most transferred satisfactorily and were ok. But a total of 16 gave me an error message as follows (one example):
"Unable to update thumbnails for project '1996-09_ PMHS Soccer - Roberto - PMHS vs Western Wayne - September 3, 1996.rcproject'. Your disk may be full."
The disk is not full as I have some 800gb of total disk space. I do not know if it is due to a recording issue or choices made when exporting or an iMovie issue. I have not been able to find any on-line similar issues published, so I am exploring this issue with you as well as Apple in parallel. I also recall seeing another error message once referring to "quartz video card??".

  • A garageband project completely disappeared.

Garage band project completely disappeared.  The only thing I did recently that might have caused it was backing up my hard drive. Is this possible?  I'm a bit leery of connecting the back up harddrive for fear that i might lose more!  Suggestions?

But how did you backup? Is your backup drive directly connected (USB, Thunderbolt) or a network attached storage? Did you use backup software that came with the drive, or Time Machine, or did you simply copy the project by drag-and-drop to the drive? Copying between drives should not delete a project from your system system drive, but if you hold down the options-key while dragging a project to a different disk, the project will be moved instead of copied and deleted from the original location.

  • Encore project file DISAPPEARS

This happened to me twice today. The first time I thought I made a mistake but happening twice makes me think it's a software issue. Luckily I had the saved file from end of day yesterday and the changes I made today were minimal.
I made changes to a Blu Ray project in Encore. I burned the disk and everything seems fine. When I save and quit, the project file disappears. GONE! The only reference to it anywhere on the computer or external drive is the project is in the recent items list from the Apple menu (and my backup drive but that is from yesterday).
I'm running CS5 and the latest version of OSX.

    Welcome to the forum.
The first thing that I would check, and in depth, would be your complete I/O sub-system, i.e. your HDD's and your controller. This should never happen, and Adobe programs are usually very careful to NOT directly affect any existing file on the system.
Any other anomalies with regards to files and folders?
You mention externals. Are any USB? Read/write errors are common, when working to/from those, though they function nicely for archiving - just not when working to/from.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
