Promise controller acting strange, known issue?

at this point, i tracked all of my problems down to my promise controller..
while my hd's are on the promise controller, raid0, no go on the win2k install, and strange things with xp, like slow datatransfer..
but there are loads and loads more strange problems.
now i've connected my s-ata hd's to the via controller, using softwre raid0, but no problems anymore..
is it a known problem with the promise controllers?

Hi fboecom
Yes, you need Via IDE ( PATA IDE) enabled otherwise your CDs and IDE HDDs won't function.
To use Via SATA, the S ATA IDE needs enabled for SATA1 and 2.
I see I am going to have to do some work on the promise, it may well be the IDE3 connector works, except for optical drives.  Ser1 & Ser2, I have had working in conjunction with the Via. But that was when originally trying to set up the Maxtors. I think I may have had the promise either disabled or on SATA.  I will be ordering stock this week, so I will get another SATA drive and see just what works.
By the time you buy another disk next year, Promise will have rewritten their drivers, they will have to for new MS systems in pipeline, plus new 939 pin chips coming soon and Mobos to match.
Read this link, if you want to see how Merlinen got, is it 10 HDDs to run, I#m still thinking about his next advance.

my macbook pro started acting strange after a safari reset.
the mouse no longer: animates the dock, activates hot corners or selects pages from safari 'top sites' (without a hassle). attempts to reset dock and hot corners from preferences has been fruitless
the mouse also gets 'stuck' in logic precipitating force quits.
i run osX 10.6.8 on a 2007 macbook pro that has had 2 motherboards replaced autumn 2010.
my troubleshooting has been: restart, pRam and safe boot, also checking a 'test' account to find the same issues extant.
pRam restart caused airport to quit and say there is no airport card, and wouldn't respond untill another reboot.
macbook pro 15" 2.4 GHz intel core duo.2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
i have treated this book with care, yet run logic pro studio to the limit of this book's abilities.
    what shoud i do?

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).

  • Strange character issue in textfields

I've created a form in Livecycle Designer ES2 for a government company.
The form contains several pages with text fields, radio buttons and check boxes.
Also javascripts to enhance the form.
I've used their company font for static text and Verdana for the textfields.
My customer uses Windows XP (SP3) and Adobe Reader 10.1.x on all of their computers.
When they open the form and start typing text in the formfields something strange happens.
It looks like that if the first key they hit on the keyboard, directly after opening the form, acts strange in the entire form.
    For example:
If the hit a letter "a" as the first key, after opening the form.
The letter "a" will be followed with one or several spaces through the entire form.
Also some letters shows on top of each other.
I've tested the form on several other Windows XP computers with Reader 10.1.x and the problem didn't show.
The test where made on different locations and companies.
The problem only seems to exist on all of the computers of my customer.
Is there a known problem dat looks like this?
Maybe a third application is cousing this problem, but i don't know what it can be.
    Anyone seen this behaviour before??
I recently upgraded to ES4 and exported the form using ES4, but the error seems to stay.

    Hi Kavipriya,

I am not getting any issue..
but in place of special character , it shows some squar box symbol.. remaining ok..
and remaining special characters are working fine..
the following examples which I got in my excel output..
    CM&U Enertrag Randow-Höhe (8) SDL
    CM&U Prützke 1-4  SDL  I & II
CM&U Kulder Hof Tönisvorst (4) SDL phase I+II
the output is generating perfect.. but client reports some bad characters are coming in place of Ö. Ü,ß,.....etc

  • Safari is acting strangely on several counts

For the last several days, Safari is acting strangely on several counts. I haven't downloaded any updates or plugins recently, and I am not aware of any Safari viruses on Mac OS X, so I'm totally lost here. Please help!
    1. Periodically, Safari will stop loading a page completely. So it will start and then the url bar will be partially blue and the circle will keep circling but nothing will happen. Once it does this on one tab in that window, it will start doing it on all new tabs opened up in that window, but any original tab there might still go through. If I close the window and reopen another window, all sites on all tabs will go right through. I tried disabling DNS prefetching, and that helps Safari behave for a few minutes, then it goes back to such strange behavior. I tested using my wireless and using a different network, and it happens on both, so it's not my router. Sometimes, opening a new window doesn't help. So I shut down Safari and restart. Sometimes that doesn't help either, so I end up having to reset Safari. Obviously, having to reset Safari multiple times a day is neither productive nor ideal.
    2. When it does that url thing, it also seems to become incapable of completing from history or bookmarks. So for example, if I open a tab and type a website name, it won't complete it, even though I have that bookmarked. Generally when that happens on the first tab of a window, I can pull up the site from bookmarks and it will load immediately. But the next tab I open in that window, will do the webpage not loading business I described in #1 above.
    3. A short while ago, i tried resizing a window and it did the strangest thing where it would expand the window space, but just give me a "gray area" rather than expanding the whole web page. I closed the window, opened a new one and resizing worked fine again.
    4. A short while ago, another strange happening: everytime I opened up a new tab in the window and loaded a site, it would merge that tab with my old tab and delete the first tab, so at any given time, it was just a single tab window. I closed the window and reopened, and voila normal tab behavior again.
Strangely, if I have two windows open - as I often do - only one window will be affected by such strange behavior. The other one will function normally. But such odd behavior is not limited to instances when I have two windows open. It's also happening when there's one window open. For reasons I do not understand, it seems something in the processes of a window gets corrupted after a little while on Safari and that window starts acting strangely.
Odd and irritating and difficult. I'd greatly appreciate your help!
    I'm using Safari 5.0.6 on OS X 10.5.8... thanks!

I don't see anything in your post regarding the Safari cache. BTW, a "reset" does not empty the cache.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache. Restart your Mac, try Safari.
If that didn't help, quit Safari if it's open.
    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db (or ApplicationCache.db) file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Try Safari.
If nothing above helped, make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
If nothing above has helped, try Safari in another user account. If you see the same issues there, log back into your admin account.
Launch Disk Utility. Select the startup disk in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:   Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks.

  • Why is it that over 60 Complaints have been made to verizon about the razr screen cracking, and there is still no known issue ? Any answers Verizon?

I have taken the privilege of reposting several comments about the droid Razrs MANUFACTURE DEFECT!!!!!! I have highlighted what I felt where key points in each statement. I hope and entice any one with a similar problem to post your story so Verizon will see this is a "KNOWN PROBLEM"... My questions to Verizon are, when does it become a known problem? What does the consumer have to do to convince you, that we are not all liars.. and Is it impossible to think the producer can make a mistake?

I have had my phone less then a month and now there is a crack running vertically between two points of contact, starting at the exact point where my thumb grips on the left side across to the point where my pinky grips on the right side. I made a phone call last night, set my phone down and out of nowhere a crack appeared on the phone. I have been researching the problem and found out it is much more common than not. Verizon will not do any thing to help and I am not willing spend $100 on an insurance claim for what I believe to be a manufacture defect. They need to take ownership! This is a Known problem!
I am currently fighting to prove my phone had a manufacture defect. I am sending it in to motorola accompanied by my own testimony also with links and statements of other people I found online with the similar problem. I have also contacted Corning asking them if their is any truth behind the articles I read, stating that due to the cutting process of the glass it automatically has microscopic fractures on the edges which are prone to crack with pressure on the sides. (Which ultimately would be a manufacture issue!) They should respond within 24 hrs. They will either tell me yes there is truth, They cannot comment, or they might not respond. But I thought it was worth a try, especially to have certified documentation when confronting Motorola who claims to have never heard of this problem… As they tried to tell me today! This is a very frustrating situation and I am tired of Verizon and Motorola always passing the blame onto the consumer. One of Motorola’s sales pitches “THIN NO LONGER MEANS FRAGILE” if thats the case back it up!

I had some happy news about 3 weeks ago, when I finally gave up on my Droid X and got a Droid Razr Maxx.  I love the phone and the battery life.  It actually lasted all day which is awesome considering how much juice smartphones need to stay smart. I sent the old X into the Best Buy shop to be discombobulated and returned. I had my new Razr Maxx for about 2 weeks when the unthinkable happened.  A mysterious screen breakage.
I don’t believe most people when it seems obvious they are lying, but after having this happen to me, I now believe most people when they say they don’t know how their smart phone screen broke.  These things must be fragile, so it is user beware regarding breaking the Razr Maxx screens.  My story is as follows:
Checked the phone for messages/emails before leaving for work.  Chilly morning.  Go to work.  Get out of vehicle.  Phone rings while walking to work, and when I get it out it the screen is smashed and broken.  I sent it to Motorola and they won’t cover it.  They sent it back.  It’s a shame the Gorilla Glass more resembles candy glass.  I thought I was going to have a long lasting affair with the Razr Maxx and then this happened.  If you have had something similar happen, please leave a comment here and hopefully we can prove a trend of the screens failing without abnormal wear and tear.
Lucky for me I have the insurance again on this phone and my Droid X is back and functioning properly while I deal with this new ***.  Anyone that gets a smart phone without the insurance is a fool.  These things can’t even last through being removed from a pocket.
If you try to send it in to get fixed, please reference this post so they know that this isn’t an isolated incident.
PS – the comments problem is now fixed, so fire away.

I just had a similar situation happen to me!! I have had the Razor Maxx no more then three days…when I noticed this afternoon my screen was cracked!! Not only is the screen cracked, it’s cracked in four areas!! Now, I’m a person who takes extra special care of my phone not to drop it or be rough with it & I get all necessary protective accessories with my smart phone investment. My phone is so new, I am still waiting for the protective accessories to come in the mail!! All I know is my phone was in my car in a GPS holder, I drop off some of my clothes to the dry cleaners & low & behold while driving back I notice my screen is cracked in multiple areas!! Iwent to Verizon to argue my case that I didn’t do anything abnormal to cause the screen to be cracked. They said their was nothing they could do!! I was planning to call Motorola tomorrow, but after reading this post that may be futile. I just can’t believe that this “Kevlar Gorilla Glass” cracked like peanut brittle!! Of course I have insurance on this phone & I can file an insurance claim & get another phone, but I believe I shouldn’t have to pay for something that I didn’t cause!! I really think their has to be some sort of defect with the glass for this phone…

Our only hope is that everyone with this problem leaves a message here and we can take it to Motorola as proof that their phone is defective and it isn’t abuse that caused the screens to crack.
Sending the phone back to Motorola will just cause you to be without it for over a week.

I just switched from X2 to Droid Razr yesterday. Today was my first day carrying it. Had it in my back pocket while walking on the production floor. Apparently bending down was too much flex for it. Didn’t notice it until just now. So mine lasted approximately 3 hours before breaking. Sucks since I really like the Razr. I don’t want to go back to 3G, but at least my X2 was robust.

    @ Andrew
That really stinks man. Hope you have the insurance. And really, if a phone can’t handle being in a pocket what good is it? I do really like the phone, but hate it’s brittle nature and can’t recommend it unless they fix that aspect of it and take care of customers that are getting hosed like us.

Just received a droid Maxx yesterday and one large crack from top right down the entire screen to the bottom in less than 24 hours. It is my sons. Not exactly sure what happened but he said it wasn’t dropped or anything. He had the original droid for over 2 years w/o any issues. All my other 5 droids never had trouble, droid 1, droid 2 global and droid 3′s.

I’m getting one person a day leaving comments about similar situations here. But of course, it couldn’t be Motorola that is wrong here, it has to be the lying customer base abusing their faultless equipment.

I had my Maxx for barely a month, most of which was it still in its box as i hadn’t transitioned over to it. I’m not sure if the “Cracks” in my phone are the same as all of you sound like its a visible crack. Mine i noticed is when the phone has light coming through from the back (such as when the flashlight app is on) i see a cluster of cracks in the top left corner and then additional cracks/marks throughout the screen. I went to verizon and they tried to tell me that its the type of screen that it is and the they had seen it before….which is crap since there is no logic to that and my brother has a maxx as well without this issue…sounds more like bad manufacturing.

Update on my phone – turns out it is the actual video screen that is cracked, not the gorilla glass. So you can’t feel any of the cracks, but the screen still doesn’t work. The phone is still functioning, but there is no way to interface with it. Since mine is purchased through my corporate account, it may be replaced at no cost. However, if so, I imagine that will not be the norm.

I have had my Maxx for exactly two months to the day when I was sitting eating lunch when my phone fell off of my lap onto the floor. I pick it up to find a hair line crack on my screen which no longer functions. (I had a screen protector and a phone case on my phone while this had occurred) Luckily I had insurance. I have called Motorolla and got nowhere and the best reccomendation that Verizon could give me was to call Asurion. My previous phone was a Motorolla Devour which is ancient. I’ve had it for roughly 4 years and dropped countless times. I don’t understand how the screen on a 4+ year old phone is alot tougher/better than the supposed “upgraded” glass screen.

Mine cracked and went blank yesterday (3/21/12) for no apparent reason other than having it in my pocket. Thought this was supposed to be a tough phone. Don’t have the insurance since I am not rough with my phones and over 15 years have never damaged a phone. Guess I’m screwed.

Ok. Add me to the list. Got the Razr Maxx for my son and the screen lasted 4 DAYS! Now it has a nice crack across the middle. No abuse. I know for certain he does baby his phone and really loved this one. Now he’s heart-broken. Whole family has various Motorola Droids. None have had any problems. 4 days? Didn’t get the insurance since never really needed it before. To say I’m angry is an understatement.13.

I too am having the same problem. I have had my new droid razor maxx for only 13 days. I woke up this morning, turned my phone on and saw multiple cracks all over the glass screen. I did not drop it, sit on it or hit it on anything. I went to Verizon wherein they told me I must have done something to cause the cracking of the phone and that all I could do is file an insurance claim (which I have) and pay MORE money on top of the $300 already paid for another replacement phone. I would be more than happy to do that if it was in fact MY fault but it wasn’t. I take care of my personal items and seeing that it isn’t even 2 weeks old I do not feel it is right to make me shell out even more money for an obvious manufacturer’s defect. I have contacted Motorola about their gorilla glass and can only hope that they will rectify this issue. I have been a loyal customer of Verizon and find it very disheartening that they would not fix or replace the phone at no cost to me. I had the original droid for over 2 years with absolutely no problems. Clearly, there is a problem with the manufacture of this phone if so many of us are finding ourselves on this website writing about the same issue.

Ive had the razr maxx for six weeks. While using the phone, i ended a call. Pressed the homepage button and the glass shattered in my hand . The phone has never been dropped, impacted by anything or otherwise misused or handled roughly or improperly. Ive taken the phone to 3 different Verizon stores and got the same replies that ive aeen written here. I also contacted Motorola and got a very unwelcome runaround. I sent them an email today demanding contact information for the president of Motorola. I have insurance and have filed a claim only to be told by Asurion they have no razr maxx’s in stock and i will have to wait. This has been a circus! I have insurance in case of accidental damage. This was not accidental damge, its a manufacturer defect in the glass. I was treated so poorly by Verizon and Motorola that i will now not let this go. Why should i have to pay an insurance deductible six weeks after i bought an already expensive phone because of a manufacturer flaw? When i get my new phone i will be happy to send this phone to someone who can forensically identify what ive told motorola and verizon. The glass shattered through NORMAL use.

Got my Razr Maxx 6 weeks ago. Dropped it yesterday and the screen shattered. I don’t have insurance as I have never damaged a phone before. My prior phones have all survived my 8 year old as well. Seems really questionable that this product is so delicate. I got no where with the store in when questioning the quality of this phone.

Same story. I baby my Maxx and have never dropped it. I was driving and set my phone on the passenger seat (it did not move). I get home, put it in my pocket and go inside. Take it out a few minutes later and the LCD screen had cracked (not the glass) near the SIM card slot. Only thing I can think of is I put some pressure on it when I put it in my pocket but nothing more than what I’d consider normal. If you didn’t get the insurance Verizon just did open enrollment on their website for anyone who still wants it. I don’t know if it ended yet.

I have had my maxx for 6 weeks. I protected it with an otter box case, but only to be disappointed when it feel from my work desk on to CARPET and shattered my screen. Called Motorola got nothing accomplished they really don’t care about their customers. And Asurion has been trying to get me to down grade it seems like to me this phone was put on a pedelstal for its greatness when it was cheaply made not great screen wise. Never had this problem before with any my other droids smartphones. I am highly disappointed, and very angry. I really hope the problem with this phone reach the right source to escalate it so that something can be done about it.

I had the same thing happen to me. I have the original Droid Razr. I have had it for a little over 3 months. It was sitting on my kitchen counter when I noticed a crack in it. It has NEVER been dropped. There is a small parabolic crack right over the SD/SIM card door that can be felt, and another from the top edge of the SD/SIM card door across the face that cannot be felt. Everything still works though. It seems to me that the SD card door is the weakest part of the frame and the phone probably flexed there slightly cracking the glass. I guess gorilla glass and kevlar don’t mean a thing. I otherwise love the phone but if it can’t stand up to VERY gentle handling I don’t know what to do. I do know that my next phone will NOT be a Motorola/Google debacle. I am all about open source and the Android OS but the OS doesn’t really matter if the hardware can’t stand up to LIGHT everyday use. It is a shame when my last phone, yes up until a few months ago, was the original Razr flip phone. That thing was awesome. I have carried an Apple iPod around without a case for two years and it has not a single scratch on it. Guess my next phone will be an Apple iPhone 5 LTE or whatever name they decide to give it.

I have had my Razr MAXX for almost two months now. I put Pandora on jumped in the shower, got out of the shower to discover my screen was cracked from the inside. Phone is now completly useless. I also called Verizon who claims they have NEVER heard of this issue…Even though it happenend to my brother in laws phone the day before. He was within his 14 day window so his was replaced. I now have to go through insurance claim..kicker line is they want me to take a down grade as well…they say they dont have a phone to replace it with. Why do i pay insurance then? Dealing with Motorola as well, but they are acting the same way as Verizon. I was upset to pay my deductable after all the money I already paid, but my thing is, are we gonna have to pay 99.00$ every two months?
I seen on another blog that whats happening is the phone gets hot from NORMAL useage…due to the size of the Razr and MAXX the battery swells and creates pressure causing the screen to …yup you guessed it CRACK…so irritating.

Dropped my RAZR MAXX last night at home. It hit my soft shoe and the carpet. When I picked up the internal screen was cracked/smashed in multiple places. In the first week or two I had it, I had actually dropped it in a parking lot. A little nick on the corner, but fine. When I drop it on something soft, the screen shatters. The external gorilla glass is fine, but internally it looks like somebody beat it on a rock. Definitely an issue.

Had phone 5 days, nothing happened to it. Finished a call, put phone on counter and screen cracked. Verizon says can’t replace and have to pay insurance deductible because it’s damage not a defective product. Motorola says 5-7 business days after they send a label (up to a few weeks without a phone??) to determine IF it was defective or damaged. Then defective phones are repaired–”we don’t exchange products” What a racket!

Didn’t get insurance because had last two droids til contract ran out got free upgrade, thats two year per phone without a scratch this max looks like I taped a few firecrackers onto screen and blew it up. Maybe they need to design a replacement we can just snap a new one on ourselves for 10 too 20 bucks and we all would be mo happy:)

Yesterday, I got a phone call at an irritating time and kinda smacked my phone with my fingers and it slightly cracked something inside. The screen is blank and won’t come on. I can’t believe I broke it with the tips of my fingers.

Mine is already broken but if someone had a video of it charging every time they might catch it breaking on its own. Publish that and save us all.
I never dropped my Maxx and does not show a single scuff, I believe the screen broke from internal pressure from a hot li-po battery.

I had my phone for four days. It fell out of my pocket while having lunch. No crack then. Had a long phone call later that night, when I was done there was a crack in the glass. Verizon wouldn’t do anything.

My son had this phone 6 weeks dropped it the glass shattered. Luckily we had insurance on the phone, got a replacement less than a week ago, dropped it on the carpet tonight and the glass shattered. Called Verizon and they said they have had no prior complaints of glass breakage. The Gorilla glass obviously isn’t what they say it is! Just a piece of JUNK!!!! Don’t waste your money!!!!!!!

I had my new Razr for eight days when I noticed a crack in the screen. The crack goes all the way thru the glass to the bottom of the phone. I did not drop the phone or do anything that would damage it. I was taking extra special care with my new phone. I contacted customer service via email. They told me to get insurance and then file a claim. I did that and of course the claim was denied because the damage occured before I got the insurance. It is an unethical business practice for Verison Customer Service to have told me to do that. After getting the insurance, filing a claim…it was outside the 14 days I had to return the phone. The first service rep I spoke to should have told me to return the phone right away, instead I was told to file an insurance claim. I have emailed with 4 different service reps from Verizon and they keep suggesting I file a claim even though I have explained that I did file a claim and was denied. I am very disappointed with Verizon’s customer service.

On April 11th, I followed my normal morning routine. I removed the phone from my end table and its charging cable, and placed it in my purse. I then walked from my home, approximately 50 – 75 feet to my car. When I arrived at my car, I placed my purse on the passenger seat, and got into the car. Upon removing the phone from my purse to make a call, I saw that the screen had a small crack in it. The crack begins/ends right at the location of the power button, which must be pressed each time that the phone is to be unlocked/activated for use. I state this simply because it could be considered a ‘stress’ point, and perhaps have some bearing on how the phone may have been damaged. It should also be stated that this same routine had been followed for the previous 7 days since I purchased the phone. The phone was not being subjected to any treatment that would fall outside of what one would consider normal use. This is the same routine I have followed for years, with several other phones, including a BlackBerry Curve and a Sanyo Katana. Each of which I maintained service on for approximately 2 years, to the best of my recollection. I mention each of these phones specifically because unlike most ‘clamshell’ style phones, the Katana has a small exposed screen and the Blackberry has a fully exposed screen. Neither of them have any cracks to their screens, and even the scratches to them are minimal. This Motorola Razr phone is advertized to have ‘Gorilla Glass’ which while not unbreakable, is supposed to withstand quite a bit of stress. One website (I believe Corning or Motorola) indicates that the breaking point is around 121 pounds of pressure. I believe that there was a defect in this single particular piece of equipment (that may or may not be a singular incident) that caused it to break under normal use. It is also my belief that even if there is no current record of a ‘known issue’ with this product, it stands to reason that someone has to be the first to have the problem before it becomes a known issue.

Had this phone since early February. It is the best phone I’ve ever had. It has survived absolutely horrible drops. down stairs, onto solid concrete (multiple times, I work in a warehouse.) It has been stepped on. It has been rammed or bumped into table edges while in my pocket (glass facing out). Not a single time did it crack. I went to band practice last night and it was sitting on my guitar bag. I put it in my pocket to go home, then I pull it from my pocket after I get home and the gorilla glass (NOT THE LCD) is cracked right next to the earpiece. It is shattered and there are cracks leading down the screen.
I called Motorola. They want $160 plus tax, which makes it $177, plus shipping to and from Texas. No doubt going to add it up to $200. That is 2/3rds of what this phone cost me. Called Verizon, no help, they were surprised that the actual gorilla glass shattered. I did tons of research on replacing the screen. Most of the time you need to purchase the digitizer (gorilla glass screen) AND the LCD. If you are really skilled and have nimble fingers and a clean work environment, I have learned you can replace just the digitizer. But it is pathetic that the gorilla glass had a nasty shatter, not crack, but SHATTER and the LCD works fine.
I have called numerous cell phone repair places. And they have given me the estimate of $220-250. This is absolutely ludicrous. I might as well buy a new one. Be this a warning to all people who buy this phone. This phone is amazing, when it works. But please do NOT skip out on the insurance. The most you will have to pay with it is $100. Do not make my mistake. Do not rely or trust the Gorilla glass.
Motorola is so very much designed to scam its customers. Physical damage voids the warranty. Are you kidding me? The most common problem, voids the warranty. And it must always be the customers fault. No, nothing goes wrong in manufacturing. Nothing. I will suck it up and probably use it with the cracked screen until Motorola gives me a better offer or I just cant stand it anymore and just get the f***ing repair. It makes me grit my teeth that Motorola offers the lowest price on screen repair.

My 3-month old Razr screen cracked (never been dropped) when I had the audacity to press the lower left button with right hand while holding in my left. Apparently, the “Gorilla glass” is not designed for the rigors of, you know, using the thing like a phone and pushing buttons. Store basically called me a liar and told me not to bother sending it in, they’d send it back. I plan on a claim (probably arbitration, since they usually make you sign away your right to sue). I’ll see how it goes. This phone felt for three months distinctly like a beta version they rushed to market in time for holiday shopping season.

As a follow up to my prior post, the Verizon agreement says you can either arbitrate or pursue in small claims court. There is a dispute resolution form on verizon’s website you can use to initiate the process. I’ll try to come back and weigh as I navigate the process with thoughts/issues.

I’ve had this phone for just over two weeks. I was pushing some icons up to trash and the screen cracked – I now have a nice thumb-sized crack near the power button. As with everyone else, Motorola and Verizon decided there was nothing they could do other than charge me more money. Glad to know that the $$$ I spend on a cell phone account means nothing to them.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Strange performance issue with 3510/3511 SAM-FS disk cache

    Hi there!
I'm running a small SAM-QFS environment and have some strange performance issue on the disk storage part, which somebody here might be able to explain.
Configuration: one 3510, dual controller, RAID-5 9+1, one hot spare and one disk not configured for whatever reason. The R5 logical drive hosts a 150GB LUN for SAM-QFS metadata (mm in SAM-FS speak) and a 1TB LUN for data (mr in SAM-FS speak). Further, there are two small LUNs (2GB, 100GB) for some other purpose. Those two LUNs have nearly no I/O. All disks are SUN146G. Host connection is 2GBit, multipathing enabled and working.
Then the disk cache became too small, and the customer added a 3511 expansion unit with SUN300G disks. One logical drive is a RAID-1, 1+1, used for NetBackup catalog. The other is a RAID-5, 8+1, providing two LUNs: 260GB SAM-FS metadata (mm) and 1.999TB SAM-FS data (mr).
For SAM-FS, the LUNs form two file systems: one "residing" in the 3510, the other "residing" in the 3511 expansion. Cabling is according to the manual and checked several times by several independant people. Operating system is Solaris 10, hardware is a V880.
The problem we observe: SAM-FS I/O on LUNs on disks inside the 3510 is fine. With iostat, I see 100MB/s read and 50MB/s write at the same time. On the SAM-FS file system which is running on the two LUNs in the 3511, the limit seems to be at 40MB/s read/write. Both SAM-FS file systems are configured the same in regards of block size.
In case I have activity on both SAM-FS file systems, I see 100MB/s+ on the LUN running inside the controller shelf and another 40MB/s on the disk runnin in the 3511 expansion chassis. So, the controller is easily capable of handling 150MB/s.
Cache settings in the 3510 controller are default I think (wasn't installed by me), batteries are fine.
Is this 40MB/s we experience a limitation by the expansion shelf? Don't think so. Anybody has any ideas on this? What parameters to check or to change? Any hint appreciated. I can also provide further details if needed. Thank you.
    wolfgang

SUN300G disks sound like 300GB FC disks.
Depending on how many files are in the SAMFS file system, sharing the mm and mr devices on the same RAID array can be a pretty horrible idea. In my opinion and experience, it's almost always better to NEVER put more than one LUN on a RAID array. Period. Putting more than one LUN on an array results in IO contention on that array. And large, unnaturally configured (9+1? Why?) RAID arrays will have problems from the start.
What are the block sizes used on the RAID arrays? It wouldn't surprise me to see that the RAID array on the expansion tray has a very large block size. Larger block sizes are, in general, not better. Especially for SAMFS metadata - which IIRC is something like 8k or 16k blocks.
I suspect what is happening is most of the metadata updates are going to the mm device on the new array, contending with the IO operations on the file data.
How much space is left on each mm device? What does "iostat -sndxz 2" show when you're having the IO problems?

  • Strange import issue .. no longer works in 2.6 or Beta 3

    Strange import issue.
I use LR-2.6 everyday but have only played around with the LR-3 for a limited amount of time so the other day I decided check it out and tried to import a handful of RAW(canon) files on a SDxc-8g card via a USB card reader. I set it up to copy and convert to DNG, apply a few keywords and Metadata but when I tried it acted like it imported the first image and then froze. Card reader lights stopped blinking and just stayed on, program task bar doesn’t show any progress, not even for the first image. I then went to the folder that I was going to have the images copies to and it contained a file of the first image, but there is no indication that LR-3 even created it and it doesn’t show up in the catalog. When I tried to close out LR-3 is popped up the “in the middle of a task warning” so I just closed the program and tried it a couple more times to no avail.
So I though o well I will just open up LR-2.6 and import them from there, guess what now LR-2.6 does the exact same thing!!
I thought maybe my card reader was a POS but I was able to drag all the files to a new folder on my desktop and import them from there, nope. Tried rebooting a couple times, even opened a new catalog to test with, in both LR-2.6 and LR-3 and neither will work..
    I am stumped any ideas?

    Thank you for everyone's assistance
I actually figured out what the problem was, like most issues it comes back to operator error, it seem I had inadvertently chose a "rename file on import" template that I had set up to name the files based on a custom fill-in field in the Meta Data, I normally only used that template when I was exporting images that had been completely edited, so being these images were new imports that field was blank, hence it would import the first image and then do to " don't import subjected duplicates" being checked it would just stop the import process.

  • Indesign CS6 acting strange at times

I am not loving Indesign CS6. Not because of it's functionality but because it acts strangely. When I quit it, sometimes it takes forever to quit and you start wondering if it is going to, sometimes it says it's closed but the tabbed windows still remain in view only grayed out with the beachball spinning. Eventually it goes away but it is disturbing. anyone know why?
Another thing is that when I change a font size, it will look like it changed but still have the after image of the previous size. Irritating.
One more, and I've had this problem for all of the last versions since I think cs4. When I try to replace a pdf with a current version, (unless I have restarted my computer since the last time I created it,) it tells me that I don't haver permisson or that file may be in use. I end up going to the pdf and trashing it physically. Not very efficient.
I know there are 3 issues but I've only had it for a couple of months at best.
The first issue is the most disturbing.
Mountain Lion 10.8.2, 8 gb memory, processor 3.06 ghz intel

Again, please remove your auto-signature when replying by email.
Let's try a couple of diagnostic experiments, please.
First, create a new user account onthe mac and log in with that and tell us if there is a change in behavior in ID.
Second, try starting in with extensions disabled by holding down the Shift key while booting the Mac. Does that make a difference?
Do you run any sort of utilities -- anti-virus, Mac Keeper, etc.?

  • Nokia 6500 on 3 - known issue with signal recepti...

Does anyone know if Nokia and 3 have yet developed a fix for the known issue with 3 reception on the 6500?
I just spent close to two hours talking to 3 about this. We got a 6500 "upgrade" from 3 and have discovered that the phone doesnt work anywhere around our home, or the locality of our home. We have reverted to a 4 year old 6680 from the back of our wardrobe which will show 4 bars of signal when the brand new 6500 shows no signal at all.
3 advised that very poor ability to get a signal is a known issue with this phone, however as we did not report it to 3 within the 14 day period they expect us to stay out the contract or pay a near £400 termination fee. (or take a much inferior phone which is "the only model we are authorised to offer as a replacement"). (The reason we didnt report it was that as we had been happy with our existing model we didnt swap the sim card over straight away. When we did discover it we tried 3's suggestion of upgrading the firmware (the phone arrived with a 2007 version) but this did nothing to help.
What really bugs me is that 3 contacted us in September and spent close to an hour an the phone persuading us to upgrade to the 6500. That's five months at least after it was a known issue and being worked on by Nokia and 3. (There are posts within this Support Forum discussing the issue that go back to April at least.)
I will be reporting 3 to trading standards but am curious as to what progress has been made (if any) on sorting this issue out?
I also thought it may be useful for others to be aware of as it will allow them to make a more informed decision about the phone, and about 3's attitude to their customers. We have been with them for over 5 years.
At one point, when I told the manager/supervisor that I had become aware of the fact that it was an issue that was well-known 5 months before 3 persuaded us to upgrade, he suggested that it was out fault for not researching the web and forums well enough, and that I should have discovered this before agreeing to take the phone.
    Amazing.
    Be warned!!!!!

Hi all - sorry I stopped monitoring the thread in the run up to christmas but thanks for your replies.
    shumboy, redroxy, roslily, ginger25
very sorry to hear you are all experiencing the same problems and that 3 are as unhelpful with you as they were with us. my guess is that the problem with this phone is so widespread that they would let themselves open to too much cost if they started actually doing the right thing and replcing them like for like. I also think the suggesiton that the only way out of a contract is to pay out £260+ (£300 in our case) after it was their own promises of what a good phone it is, despite the fact that this significnt problem has been known about for months, that persuaded people to take the contract is tantamount to fraud and that certainly trading standrads should be informed.
gaz_level2 - thanks for the information you gave which confirms that there are known issues with H3G signals and the 6500 especially. I didnt understand some of the detail as I am not technical but I hope others seeing this post may get the info they need to make an informed decision should 3 continue with their despicable practice of enticing people into signing up based on what a great phone this is.
wafush - if you are considering 3 : NO NO NO
Ben - you are lucky to have a 6500 that is working (based on replies to this thread and on other boards) and you are right that people dont start threads complimenting phones. I started this one for two reasons: a) to see if/how-many others had the same problem and b) inform people about it and what help they could expect from 3 when the problem does occur
Steve/Hamraam - we seem to be in a ridiculous situation where the newest phones are actually less good at making and receving phone calls than phones of 5-6 years ago! They're brilliant for taking photos, browsing the web, playing MP3's. But for simple phone calls... ? And dont get me started on battery life! My old 6310 can last two weeks if I switch it off overnight. Most of the new phones require re-charging at least every other day and if you use push email make that once per day minimum.

  • New Socket() acting strangely under Windows

    Hello,
    First a little background:
I have a client application that connects to a server application through a socket. The client first checks to see the server is 'reachable' using the .isReachable() method. If this return true, all is good. If it returns false, the application sets up to use a Microsoft Windows DUN connection and VPN to connect to the server. This is handled through a 3rd party .jar file called jdialup. Oh, one more thing, the client pc is connected to the network through a hub. In other words, the pc is connected to a hub. The hub is connected to the network using it's up-link port... Everything so far is pretty simple enough...
    Now the issue:
If I disconnect the network cable from the back of the pc and run my client application, it says that the server is not reachable, which is fine. The application then dials out to our ISP and connects to our VPN. The client application connects to the server application through a socket and sends the request and receives the response. The client then disconnects. Everything is GOOD.
Now, if I disconnect the network cable from the up-link on the hub, thus removing the client pc from the network, this is where the strangeness happens! I run my client application, it again says that the server is not reachable, which is fine. The application again dials out to our ISP and connects to our VPN. This is fine. Now though, when I attempt to make the socket connection to the server, it times out! The actual call to
    Socket socket = new Socket(ipaddress, port);times out...
This seems very strange to me... Any ideas?
PS: In both situations when I connect to the VPN, I can ping and telnet to the server. It is the Socket call that is acting strange...
    Thanks,

I've been following this and I'm baffled by the
discussion so far. Has the thread been trimmed? I believe we got off on a tangent, but the problem is that in certain circumstances the client application tries to connect to the server application the call the 'new Socket()' times out... You will have to read my original post...
Anyway, I believe that I have figured it out. It was related to the gateway option in the network setup on the client pc.
Originally I had the gateway option set to be an ip address internal to our network. Our network guy said that in this situation, I needed to set the gateway to an ip address outside out network. When I did that, everything now work beautifully. Why? I have no real idea as I am not a network guy, but it work now and I am happy...
Thanks for everyones help and sorry for all the confusion.

  • Is there any known issue about mutex lock used in JNI on Solaris 10?

    Dear Oracle,
I'm facing a strange behavior when running a JNI application that use the mutex lock. The application hanged after running for a while on one of our Solaris 10 machines. After investigating the stack trace of the application, it shows that one of all the application's threads that access the JNI hold the mutex lock forever, and that cause the other threads cannot access the JNI. The same application works fine on other Solaris 10 machines.
The mutex function I used as show below:
    mutex_lock(&mutex)
The application hanged at this line:
    0xff2cc940 ___lwp_mutex_timedlock + 0x8
The Kernel version is SunOS 5.10 Generic_142900-14
Since this issue occurrs on only one Solaris 10 machine in our environment, we are wondering if there is any known issue regarding the mutex lock used in JNI on Solaris 10. We tried to search the Internet and the Java Bug database but found nothing related to this issue.
    Best regards,
    Krit K.

Different environments mean just that. So something could be causing it outside java.
Additionally if anything at all is different in the execution data, such as even a name having a different size, then it would change the execution path.
Which would cause a problem in the JNI code to manifest itself on only one box. Probably isn't a pointer bug but all sorts of odd behavior can result from that.

  • We have a MBP with the NVIDIA known issue--purchased in August 2007. Is there any course of action for us?

    Hello!
Our daughter's MBP was purchased in August 2007.  It died over the weekend and the diagnosis is this known issue. Apparently Apple is fixing these computers up to four years out from purchase.  We are a few months shy of five years. The computer is at an Apple certified repair center but not at an Apple store. Do you think there is any course of action we can take for Apple to fix this? I thought I'd ask before just giving up.
We are an Apple family---two iMacs, two (soon to be three as we have another graduate) MBPs, iPad, multiple iPods, 5 iPhones, etc.  I don't suppose there is anyway to play on Apple's sympathies but thought I'd ask for advice!
    Thanks for any advice/help!
    DeLynn

My 15" 2007 has the same issue, and what's especially alarming is I brought the machine to the Apple Store to test for this issue before the 4 year deadline was over and they said my machine wasn't part of the same batch.
However, I'm experiencing the same video distortion issues as described by others who have it. Definitely narrowed it down to the video chip, even a electronic specialist friend of mine says it's the video.
It's a shame because everything else, except the weak keyboards Apple seems to enjoy creating, works perfectly on it. I could replace the keyboard and sell the machine for $650, but now I'll have to scrap it out for parts.
Another thing, is the grill exiting the machine where the fans are blocks dust on the inside!, which is totally stupid, dust should be blocked from entering the machine on the outside, where one can wipe it off and improve air flow.
Removing the fans to clean the grills violates one's AppleCare/warranty.
Don't get me started about them denying security updates for 10.5 uses since July 2011.
Intel 10.5 got a mid May update, only because there is a 600,000 strong Mac botnet that they acted.
Apple is good at getting customers, not good at keeping them.

  • DW acting strange - does not go to code view

My Dreamweaver CS3 has started acting strangely since I
upgraded to a new version of CS3 studio.
I have been working with CS3 for a while now without needing
too much of an adjustment from DW8.
However, I just bought a new computer so I had to reinstall
    all my software.
On the new box, DW is acting mighty strange:
    1) When I am in Layout view and click on an element to go to
the corresponding line of code for the element it no longer goes to
the line. However, it does when I r-click on it. It is a bit
annoying since it also opens the contextual menu at the same time.
    2) When I am in code view (which is 99% of the time) and I
click on an element, it no longer shows me the corresponding CSS
rule in the CSS pane. Again, if I r-click sometiomes it works, but
this one is not reliable either way. Sometimes it works if I double
click, but most of the time it doesn't.
    3) The comment icon on the code toolbar is often grayed out.
No reason I can see and just as often it wil work on the same line
of code where it didn't work a minute before.
I combed the preferences line by line without success.
On my old computer I never had any issues like this. I find
it very strange and it is crimping my workflow considerably. Is
anyone familiar with theis behavior or how to fix it?

The times I have seen others post things like this, it's been
    due to a bad
    installation - reinstalling fixes it.

  • Safari's Tabs Acting Strange After 10.6.4 Update

    Hi guys,
After the 10.6.4 update Safari's tabs have been acting strangely. Say I have Apple.com open in one tab and I hit Apple-T to open a new tab. It then changes that tab (which Apple.com was loaded on) to the Top Sites, keeps the focus on this tab, then opens a blank tab right next to it. I effectively lose the page I was using and a blank one appears. Any ideas as to how to fix this?
    Thanks for the help!

    HI,
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still having problems...
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
And if you didn't repair disk permissions after you updated Safari, it's a good idea to do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Files Made in CS5.1 Layers Palette Acts Strangely When Opened in CS6

I have files that were created in Illustrator CS5.1 that when opened in CS6, the layers palette acts strangely; the names of layers are not there unless you mouse over, very odd. Has anyone else experienced this? I do have a Pantone Live Plugin installed on Illustrator CS5.1, could this be creating some strange issue? Thank you.

Probably, but without further info on your system and other details, nobody can be sure.
