Promise PDC20579 SATA/RAID controller

I'm trying to get the piece of shit working with Linux, but haven't had any luck. I'm not sure which Promise add-on cards use this chip as this one is built into my mobo, where it provides 2-SATA and 1-PATA port. I'm using the PATA with 2 drives (160GB, 60GB) and I don't want to setup a RAID array, but just use it as an extra IDE controller.
The BIOS detects the drives correctly but linux doesn't recognize the Promise controller, so it's not assigning device nodes for the drives (no hd* or sd*) and I can't seem to make it work. The correct kernel module, according to the net, is sata_promise, but I'm not certain it supports the PATA part of the controller. When loaded, it prints info about the connected drives to dmesg, but never assigns device nodes.

Okay, so I found a patch in the Red Hat kernel mailing list that seems to work. It patches the sata-promise module to attempt to detect PATA ports when nothing is connected via SATA. I don't have any SATA discs so I cannot check to see if it breaks anything in regards to SATA.
If anyone else is interested, I'll strip the RH specific stuff from the patch and submit it to the Arch kernel devs for review. Not sure if enough people would find is useful tho.

  • Promise 20376 SATA Raid Controller Drivers?

Hi I'm trying to install WinXP with an K7N2GM2 - ILSR board and I'm having problems with the SATA drivers I've downloaded (from http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_list.php?part=1&kind=4&CHIP=4&COM=19). The 'make disk' instructions included is a bit awkward but I tried putting the different files on a floppy several different ways, but to no avail. When windows asks for a floppy to install the sata drivers, it reads the disk for a while and returns back to the 'insert a disk and hit ENTER.' I went to Promise's website and download some drivers from there but again to no avail, the drivers included on the CD with the mb have not worked either.
Just to make sure I'm simply not putting the correct files on floppy or not putting them in the proper directory structure, I'll give you an example of what I have put on the floppy:
    WinXP <-Folder containing drivers
    txtsetup.oem
    ULSATA
    fasttx2k
and the text files like 'makedisk'
I've also taken all of the files out of the WinXP directory and had all files in the same location A:\ . I'm not sure what to do at this point, I'm adept with computers and I know that sata can be finiky, but this one going nowhere fast. Could somebody help? BTW I'm only using one HD, a WD 80GB Sata HD which I had to put in an array ('functioning').

  • Oracle Ent. Linux  drivers for HP Smart Array B110i Sata Raid Controller

Trying to install Oracle Ent. Linux (OEL) release 4 update 8 on HP DL 180 G6 server. Where we can find OEL drivers for the sata raid controller ?
(HP Smart Array B110i Sata Raid Controller)
    Thanks in advance.

The HP support side shows a Linux certification matrix at: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/linux/hplinuxcert.html
From there you can also download the necessary drivers and instructions or use HP smartstart CD which prepares the system for the OS you need to install. Oracle Enterprise Linux is binary compatible with RHEL. You will need to click on "Archive" to see support for Enterprise Linux version 4 and older.

  • Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID Controller not working out of the box

    Dear all,
I'm using, for my tests, an old server with a supermicro X7DBN Server motherboard.
This motherboard comes with an embedded Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID Controller.
When I try a native installation from the technical preview DVD it sees the RAID1 volume that has been created (2 disk mirror) but when I select it to proceed with the installation there is an unknown error stating that it's impossible to write to this disk.
The same installation works perfectly with 2012R2 and the out of the box driver provided bin the install media.
An update from the previously installed 2012R2 to the Windows Server Technical Preview also works without problem.
It would make sens for MS to revert to the driver version embedded in 2012R2 for Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID Controller which is:
    Name : Intel(R) ESB2 SATA RAID Controller
    Date : 10.08.2010
    Version : 8.6.2.1025
    inf section : iaStor_Inst_RAID
    Device ID : PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2682&CC_0104

    Hi,
Thank you for the information. As you said from the behavior it seems that the build-in drivers of Windows Server Technical Preview will not work with the specific motherboard hence the RAID1 cannot work well.
    I'll log the issue down.

    Hello!
    Is SATA/RAID enabled in BIOS?
Have you hit F6 during Windows installation, for allowing Windows Set-up to locate the drivers?
If SATA/RAID was disabled, it wouldn't even appear in Device Manager
If the RAID is secondary storage, then hitting F6 won't acheive anything as Windows is already installed
You will however need to go into the RAID BIOS and create an array before you can use the RAIDed disks

  • KT4 Ultra (6590) need update of the Promise SATA RAID Controller PDC20376

The last Bios update AMI 1.4 for the KT4 Ultra (6590) have built in the bios version 1.00.0.18 for the PDC20376 (Promise 376).
    I can configure 2 maxtor (6E040T0) sata1 in a raid0 array and it works under WinXP SP3,
but the 2 drives are working in UDMA5 according to the FastBuild Utility when the motherboard specifications talks about 150Mb (SATA1).
It's not an OS problem because the FastBuild Utility at Bios startup show the UDMA5 mode for HDD.
It's not a Maxtor 6E040T0 (SATA1) problem because have no jumper to set.
The Promise support center don't provide support for built in raid controller but the responce was that it's related to a known bios issue of the controller, so i have to update.
For the last Bios version for the S150 TX4 controller look at:
    http://promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=all&os=100&go=GO
It's impossible to update the bios with the promise tool because the controller is integrated in the motherboard.
I read for example than on the motherboard K7N2 Delta-ILSR the bios version of the Promise 376 controller is 1.00.0.21:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=92756.msg665966#msg665966
I think the only solution is a modding bios, where i have to replace only the Promise controller bios but:
    1) The tool amibcp.exe can't open the A6590VMS.140 AMI bios (renamed .rom), i don't know why!!!
    2) What promise controller bios rom file is good?
Can anyone out there help . . . please ?

This is my results compared to my other UDMA6 HDD on IDE1, HDTach long bench stop with "Read Error" and only quick bench works.
The version of the Controller driver under WinXP-SP3 is 1.0.1.29 and I configured the driver in the PAM Utility with:
"Driver Write Cache" enabled and "Write Back" as cache settings (The 2 Maxtor SATA1 in RAID have 2MB of cache, but i don't know How many cache have the controller!!).
The Burst Speed is too strange!!! quick bench error?

  • Promise 378 SATA Raid question

Can someone tell me if my SATA drives are setup correctly given the details below?  The only driver that works is the FastTrak 378 (not the SATA 378 driver).  I want to make sure I am taking full advantage of my SATA drives.  In the Promise setup it shows them operating as "Mode U5".  What is this?
    Any help appreciated.
My Drive COnfiguration is as follows:
SATA Drives are on SATA3 & SATA4 (Promise 378 Controller)
    (as RAID 0 for performance)
Primary IDE Master - Sony DVD/RW
Primary IDE Slave - not used
Secondary IDE Master - ASUS DVD ROM
Secondary IDE Slave - ATA 133 Drive bay (Empty)
    3rd IDE Master&Slave - not used
    On Board Promise settings
    FastTrak 378 BIOS Ver 1.00.0.27
    2+0 Stripe - Functional
    HIT CTRL+F for setup and
(in the setup it shows RAID 0 Drive Array as Mode U5)
    Bios Settings
    Boot Device Priority
    1 - Floppy
    2 - ASUS DVD ROM
    3 - BBS-0(RAID):FT 378 Ary 1
On Board Promise IDE - As RAID
On Chip ATA's Operation Mode - Legacy Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - no
    * PATA Keep enabled - no
    PATA channel selection - both
    * Combined Mode Option - PATA First Channel
    * SATA Ports Definition - P0-3rd/P1-4th
    * Configure SATA as Raid - no
    (where * is greyed out)
Bios sees both DVD ROM & Sony DVD/RW
    Boot to CDROM
    Start Windows 2000 install
    F6
    "S"
    load Promise FastTrak 378 Controller
    Windows 2000 setup continues...

Everything looks good to me. Like Danny said though, you will need to change Bios to "Native Mode" for the Intel controller if you ever intend to use the Serial connectors. If not you're fine.
Also it's not clear from your post if you understand that you are using the 2 SATA drives as a Raid array. This gives you better drive performance but increases the chance of losing data. MAKE REGULAR BACKUPS.
The Promise SATA drivers are for using the Serial1&2, IDE3 connectors with single/separate drives where Raid arrays are not used.

  • SATA RAID Controller under Solaris 10

I want to set up my Sun Ultra AXMP on a SATA RAID5, but i did not find yet a controller wich is supported by Solaris 10.
I already looked for support on the Adaptec 2410SA and all other Adaptec Controlleres (searched here: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/search.jsp), but did only find one wich is only supporting 2 drives...
Are there any Controllers wich are supported by Solaris 10 OS and are RAID5 ready?
If they are only supported by other Solaris versions, its also ok.

  • A85 SATA Raid Controller

hi guys, didnt find any new posting about this, I just found out one of my mirror drive is damage and my controller is running in degraded mode. question is how to replace faulty HDD without losing data, this is no software that comes with the machine that allows me to do that like the servers do. When i go to BIOS, everything says it will destroy all data and I wasnt sure it means destroy ALL or just the broken raid drive?
    Anyone tried?

    losmeme wrote:
Yes, it will destroy the data. Most HDD manufacturers have programs that will mirror drives for you. If you have a Western Digital HDD, download the Acronis True Image software from HERE.
Ah, what is then the point of having RAID??? Actually solution exists, check Link for example.
P.S. Always have backup copy of your data. RAID is not backup. Many things can go wrong, not just HDDs.

  • Q45MDO does not initialise Promise RAID controller boot ROM

    Hi all,
I have an MSI Q45MDO with a Promise EX8350 SATA RAID controller plugged into the PCI-E x16 slot, as I am using the board's onboard graphics for display purposes. However, when the system is booted, the Promise BIOS (which would allow me to configure the attached hard drives) is not displayed.
Does anyone know why this is and how I can get the Promise BIOS to be shown on bootup again?

Your Promise Card is explicitly listed in the Support list for your mainboard:
    http://eu.msi.com/uploads/test_report/TR2_1750.pdf
You might wanna contact MSI Technical Support about this.  Maybe they can point you into the right direction:

Also, get in touch with promise to find out if there is a new BIOS available for your Controller Card.

But under DISK DRIVES, the Promise 2+0 stripe /raid0 scsi device shows up as an unknown, and if I try to update the drivers.. nothing ever changes..
The drive(s) does work, more of a comsmetic issue?

What do you mean with that?

array is already created (Note: there is important data on it, can't recreate it! Only Segate 80GB is free and empty)
I don't want to boot from raid.

I already tried the XP-Install routine to specify additional mass storage drivers. (Note: 1 single 80GB Drive was attached)  Which are the suitable ones? As mentioned I tried the following:
    1. Attached floppy 'Fasttrack family drivers'
Result: Message: Driver is for Win2k only. Not a single  Harddrive shows for installing XP.
    2. Attached Floppy (Promise Ultra 100 lite, 256 only)
Result: Driver is for Win2k only. Installation procedure hangs.
    3. Driver from MSI-Site for pdc20265. Same as 2.
    4. Extracting via4in1 drivers and putting WinXPIDE drivers on floppy:
Result: Installation routine doesn't recoginze drivers on floppy.
