Promise Ultra ATA-100 (20265) puts drives in PIO 4

Before I get to the problem, here's my hardware:
- Maxtor D740X Ultra DMA133 80GB
- IBM Deskstar 60GXP (supports UDMA100)
- MS-6915, BIOS 2.01 (build 34) (Promise Ultra100 Controller that was bundled with the 694D-Pro board
- MS-6321 (694D-Pro motherboard, BIOS version 1.9)
Onto the problem:
I have the drives setup to both masters with no slaves attached; the IBM is on IDE 1 & the Maxtor is on IDE 2. When they're both connected, the ultra 100 controller uses PIO 4 mode for both disks. If I disconnect one of the drives, the controller uses Ultra DMA 5. --as I said, this works for either drive when it's alone, but not for both at the same time.
I don't know if the promise controller has a flashable bios, but if it does, I'm thinking that that may help. However, I'm having trouble finding any information on the subject.
In short, I want to use both hard drives in ultra dma 5 mode at the same time!
Any ideas?  ?(

You will need some software utility from either Syba or Silicon Image.

  • Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board~ Is it worth it???

I was considering installing a Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board to run my ultra ATA devices.
Is it worth the trouble or would it bog my system down for a small increase in transfer rate????
    Thanks
    DD

I've got two IDE hard drives that have the converter board that plugs into SATA on my mobo. I didn't see that much of a performance gain until I went to RAID. I had IDE RAID and it worked alright. When I put the adapters on, the speed increased by at least double. I would say this is due to a more refined RAID controller, though, but it definately wouldn't hurt your performance any.

  • Serial ATA vs. Ultra ATA/100

    Hi.
My Macbooks HD crashed last weekend (folder with questionmark, etc.) and I went online to find out what the reason is. After reading some discussion boards I decided to order a new one. So I did order a TravelStar 5K160. It arrived yesterday and when I tried to replace it, that the interfaces do not match. Looks like the new harddisk has a Serial ATA interface, where the old one had a Ultra ATA/100 (Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/11/11/fastandfurious/ My new one looks like the one on top, where the old one looks like the one below.)
Is there anything I can do to make the new one working or did I just really order the wrong HD???
    Message was edited by: Coolcumber

Hi Coolcumber and welcome to Discussions,
the MacBooks have always had SATA as the connection interface for the internal HD.
Can it be that the new one is a IDE/PATA and not your old one ?
When the new HD is a SATA the it must fit into the MacBook.
If the new one is a IDE/PATA, then try to send it back and get the one with SATA.

  • Will a HDD Ultra ATA 100 work in a MacBook?

I'm planning to replace the HDD with a 120 GB. The one I like is the Western Digital WD1200VE 5400 8MB Ultra ATA. Now I'm not sure will it work? Is Ultra ATA compatible to S-ATA?

No… you need an SATA version of the drive.

  • Ultra ATA 100

Are there any drivers for the UltraATA 100 Controller which is onboard of the Asus A7V?
    Thanks in advance!

    Yes
Exchange it for SATA. And with Seagate, there have been discussions of firmware and model number on the Barracuda 7200.9 and .10s. Safer bet: Hitachi 7K500 500GB.
Reviews and SR benchmarks show it is an excellent drive.

One last thing, some drives like the WD Raptor w/ 16MB cache (the 150GB model and the newest 74GB) won't work on the native SATA ports of PCI/PCI-X G5s and require a controller that is also bootable, like SeriTek series.

  • How to install solaris 8 in 30 GB ata/100 drive ?

Solaris installation fails saying that there is no suitable hard disk or partition available in my system.
If I run format utility I can see the hard drive but
Solaris does not recognize it's partitions and requires me to enter nr of cyls, heads etc...
I do not go further because it may destroy my whole partitions.
have 30 GB ata/100 Seagate hard drive and there is
a 5 GB empty slot reserved for Solaris installation.
It's just after a 12.5 GB of first primary (with logicals) and just before a 10 GB of another primary.
    I've tried followings without success:
    1- Leaving 5 GB unpartitioned
2- Created a 5 GB primary partition without format
    3- Created a 5 GB ext2 (using linux) partition
    4- Created a 5 GB ext2 with ufs format
Everytime I've got same error, Solaris cant find a partition. I suspect it does not recognize hard disks larger than either 8 Gig or 1024 cylinders or ata/100.
    What can I do?

I downloaded the Solaris 8 for x86 yesterday and burned them into CDs.
I have the following hardware configuration.
    - Intel i815E mainboard
    - Intel PIII 733
    - KingMax 256M 133MHz
    - Maxtor 30G hard disk
    - Acer 50X CDROM
The inistallation initially gave me a warning.
WARNING: ACPI Table not in Reclaim Memory
And it gave more warning during the installation process:
Resource Conflicting -- Both devices are added
    The conflicting devices are:
    - PNP0C01
    - ISY0050
Unfortunately, I don't know what they are. :(
However, these are not the whole story. The installer went ahead to
let me fdisk my 30G hard disk.
I accepted the "Solaris Default" and answered Y to the question "Can
swap slice start at the beginning of the disk?". Immediately, the
system hangs there but the keyboard is responsive that I can type
    anything I want.
In addition, I use the 512M as swap as suggested by the installer.
Can anyone help me with this situation? I have tried installing this
version of Solaris for several times but with no luck. :S
Any insights are highly appreciated! Thanks!

  • ATA/100 and  ATA/66 question

    I'm trying to build a server from a Dual 1.25GHz G4 MMD
    The KB specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP63
say "Support for up to four internal ATA drives (two Ultra ATA/100 and two Ultra ATA/66)"
The only ATA/66 HDs I can find are only like 20GB (twenty) and expensive.
    I want to put 4 x 500GB
    What am I missing?
Also, is that box capable of cooling 4 x 500GB or am I asking for a fire?
    Thanks

I'm mainly building this server as study for the OSX Support Essentials exam. I got a sweet price, and it's a whole lot cheaper than a US$1500 class. It's not a hardware exam, but I need expendable system to work through the networking chapters.
I just thought maybe I'd get a file server for myself as a bonus. Seems like running external drives defeats the purpose.

  • Does anyone know when the Mac Pro switched from ATA to SATA DVD Drives

Does anyone know when the Mac Pro switched from ATA to SATA DVD Drives ?
I tried to find this answer online but failed.

Appears the Mac Pro (Early 2008) is the last model to suggest Ultra ATA/100 optical.
And with an optional card, use Serial Attached SCSI via Mac Pro Raid.
This kind of information gets sketchy in that the hard drive bus and other parts are SATA
and only this (and earlier) model Mac Pro has optical drive interface w/ Ultra ATA/100. The
logic board on the early 2008 appears to have two Serial ATA ports, 3.0GBPS; so to check
these, you may need to look into specification in iFixit.com repair guides, any takeapart
guides, and note specifications in everymac.com and those from mactracker.ca.
The MacPro after Early 2008 model build series (Early 2009) appears to sport an optical
drive with 18x speed, compared to Early 2008 & before, whose drives indicate 16x spec.
Other changes may be indicated by certain parts and differences; processors, graphic
support, and those kinds of things. 2008 shows dual-core, afterward, quad-core.
So on what little I found, that would appear to be the divide or when optical drive spec
on the logic board changed from Ultra ATA/100 to SATA versions. But double check.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Seagate Ultra vs. SATA internal drives

I recently went to Best Buy (my first mistake...) to buy an internal SATA drive for my PM G5 Quad. The guy there said the Seagate 400GB Ultra ATA/100 was a SATA drive. The product number was ST3400632A-RK. I don't think this is a SATA drive at all.
After spending/wasting 40 minutes on the phone with some guy at Apple support who knew absolutely nothing, I am about to return the drive to Best Buy, because I'm pretty sure this isn't a SATA drive -- the data connectors look parallel to me.
    Anyway, my questions:
    1. Am I right, and this is not a SATA drive?
    2. What is the name of Seagate's true SATA drive?
    3. Does Seagate's true SATA drive work in the PM G5 quad? (I read something about compatibility problems.)
    4. When you install the drive in the lower drive bay, do you mess with the primary system hard drive at all -- or do you just leave it alone and connect your new drive to the motherboard?
    Thanks.
    Paul S.
Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    1. You are right. That is not SATA.
    2. It'll be called SATA.
    3. The Seagate 400GB ST-3400832AS Barracuda 7200.8 SATA w/NCQ Hard Disk should work fine. Watch out for the 7200.9 drives though. Check http://www.barefeats.com and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for drive tests and recommendations.
    4. I think on the quad one of the cables isn't pulled out for you and you have to fiddle with the primary drive to pull it out before attaching it to the second drive.

  • 815M Pro (MS-6334) - how to use ATA/100 disk?

"Q:I don't have a system that supports Ultra ATA/100, can I run the Ultra ATA/100 HDD in it?
A:Yes, the HDD will not run in UATA/100 mode but instead is a slower compatible
    mode such as Ultra ATA/66, Ultra ATA/33 (33.3 MB/s), DMA Mode 2 (16.6 MB/s)

CD-RW as Secondary Master (no Secondary slave).
I've tried to replace the Fujitsu with a Western Digital WD400BB 40GB EIDE (Ultra ATA/100) disk but when I power on the BIOS starts the memory test but machine powers off after a few seconds.

You mean, that it is during detection of ATA-devices computer powers off? If that should happen, I would never use a WD disk on this system. Halting is one thing, but powering off like that is unknown to me. Seems dangerous, if it is true.
yep its possible, can personaly confirm it.
"I would never use a WD disk on this system"
well dont worry about that, that happends with old WD HDD's only. WD is still TOP brand. like you probably know good brands has bad times sometimes, like IBM before they was buyed by HITACHI( 1st revision of IBM Desktar series). Quantum(Maxtor at thease days) has pretty malfuction series also like 1st SE series, MAXTOR with flat series lots of defective also, Seagate also with 7200.7 2nd revision IDE 80GB models lots of defectives(43 of them caput for 3 moutns personally happend to object where im support still remember numbers.....) and so on... every brand has their bad moments.

I have a 250W PSU and don't believe that just replacing the Fujitsu by the Western Digital drive could cause a power problem. I just have a floppy, HDD, CD-RW and a PCI graphics card on the motherboard.
The system works fine with the Fujitsu drive.
The Western Digital drive is not faulty - it works fine in another machine.
I'm inclined to go with the theory about ATA66 - hope someone can provide the Ultra ATA Management utility!

random instant unexpected power offs are caused by either an overheating CPU or an overloaded PSU
yep in most of cases yes, but dont think PSU overload can be coused by replacing Fudjitsu HDD with WD HDD.
he also dont have "random" shutoff" his shutdown is always at same place when HDD is began detected(not random).
about overheating CPU also cant be.. CPU is at full load at post??? and overheating but this happend only with WD HDD and PC shutdown?(dont think so) dont forgot all is alright with other HDD Fudjitsu HDD. if it is CPU heating or PSU should happend with other HDD(Fudjitsu) also not only with WD HDD.

  • MS-6534 & ATA 100

Hi, I have the MS-6534 motherboard with the following bios - Award Software International Inc, Version 6.00 PG, Date 09/28/2001. I read on the MSI.com site that this board supports UDMA Mode 5 (Ultra ATA/100), yet I cant see anyway of enabling this option in the bios or under device manager in Win XP. The highest I can go is UDMA Mode 4 (Ultra ATA/66). My hard Disk is a Seagate ST340810A 40GB which also supports UDMA Mode 5 (Ultra ATA/100), but it is only running at UDMA Mode 4 (Ultra ATA/66). I assume I have the correct IDE cable because ATA/66 & ATA/100 use the same type from what I've read? ???
I tried using the Intel Application Accelerator Software which according to Hdtune set the drive at UDMA Mode 5 (Ultra ATA/100 & I noticed things were alot faster, but unfortunately I experienced problems sometimes when booting so I uninstalled this software. :(
If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful, thankyou.

Uninstall the Ultra ATA driver from the Device Manager and restart?
I just tried this & now device manager reads:
    Intel(R) 82801BA Ultra ATA Controller -
    Driver Provider: Intel
    Driver Date: 01/10/2002
    Driver Version: 2.3.0.2160
Digital Signer: Soft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
What seems to have happened is that it has installed the same drivers as the Intel Application Accelerator Software. The old date was 2001. But, now the tab for the DMA is missing from Device Manager which also happens when you install the Intel Application Accelerator Software. HDTune says the drive is running at ATA100, but like before when I installed the Accelerator Software I get a click sound & then a short beep on boot up then the bios flashes up briefly on the screen which just seems to list the IDE drive installed. I cant see any error message, but I dont know if this is normal because it dont usually do this. The CDR/CDRW drive light seems to flash for longer when these drivers are installed.
Do you think that the SP2 of WinXP installs these more up to date drivers, as these seem to be different drivers from what I get when doing a clean install from a disc pre sp1 or sp2, I am confused!
What should I do now? Leave it as it is? I dont know how I would get those old drivers back now anyway if needed other than a clean install? Is the boot up I mentioned a problem of any kind?
    Thanks.

  • Will Serial ATA or SATA Hard Drives work in a Powerbook G4?

I have a 15" Powerbook G4, 867MHz, and I'm looking to buy a new internal Hard Drive. After a few searches, it appears I need a 2.5" HD, but I don't know much about hardware so I'm hoping someone can clarify for me:
Will a Serial ATA or SATA HD work or do I need to find an ATA-100 or older drive?
Is there a maximum RPM or size capacity that will work with my Powerbook G4?
    Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. For anyone else looking at this thread, I was also told at fries that PATA (Parallel ATA) is the new name for ATA/IDE Hard Drives. I just installed a Western Digital 2.5" 250GB PATA drive and haven't had any problems so far. Actually, when I updated from 10.5 to 10.5.8 and restarted, I was stopped at the gray screen with the prohibitory sign (circle with a line through it), but this could be unrelated. After powering off and rebooting, everything booted fine, so I'm assuming things are ok at this point.

Started windows and new hardware found. Not OK
The hardware found was "Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA storage controller".

It seems to running on a std IDE controller, however I get the new hardware message everytime I boot.
Feels like something set in bios is not recognised by OS or driver is corrupt.

    Thanks for that
Checked everything as suggested on the doco. I cannot see anything obvious. I would appear that windows see's it as a SERIAL ATA controller. However, I cannot find anything on Intel's site that refers to a "Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA storage controller".

  • KT4 Ultra w/ 2 hard drives ATA 100

    Hi,
I have 2 hard drives ATA 100. One is plugged as master on IDE1 (40Go) and second one as master on IDE2 (160Go).
On the first one, I can activate Ultra DMA mode 5 while on the second one I can only go up to Ultra mode 2.
I tried to connect the second hard drive on IDE1 (still in master mode) and then I can reach Ultra mode 5 (first hd being unplugged).
So it seems that the ATA 100 is not activated on the IDE2.
I am not a geek, sorry, and I am wondering if there is a mistake somewhere (jumper to be set) or a bios feature to activate ?

    Hello Fred:
Have you installed the most recent drivers?
It is possible there is a driver problem.  There was a driver release for Win2k in January of 2005 of the 'VIA 4 in1 drivers'
It says  'Enable VT8251 IDE DMA function under Windows 2000'
    It is at this  link:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=356&kind=1
These don't do you much good since you are using Linux 2.6.  You didn't identify your distro but you should check for any updates if you haven't already.
It's possible that the Win2k bug was also in the Linux drivers.
I assume you are probing the Linux message boards as well.
Besides this, I'm not sure what your problem is.  You could try disconnecting the CD burners (slave) and see what happens.

I set the RAID and stuff up everything is working fine but first I realized that my RAID benchmarks are low. I tried different stripe sizes(16/16 - 64/64), drivers and even tried both drives independent on different chanels RAID card.
I was still using old installed OS from my old HDD and I decided to install new OS on RAID 0 array and see how fast it boots up. I installed windows properly no problems but when I restart the system without WinXP CD in the CD drive RAID card did not boot up, I was getting an error message saying "error booting from the previous device" but when I put WinXP CD back in after cd boot screen it boots from RAID drives.
