Prompt shows IP address instead of domain/host

Our server is setup at 10.0.1.1 (actually it is at public IP address. Here I am giving this like that). Our DNS server (on another system) maps this IP to ourdomain.net. Everything was working fine. If anyone logs into the server, he will get prompt like this:
ourdomain:~
All of a sudden, this started showing our IP address instead of ourdomain at the prompt. DNS is working fine. I checked host and dig. But for some reason, IP address is showing up. How can I fix this ?
Appreciate any help.
Thanks !

You mean when logging in using ssh?
You say you checked the DNS but is this IP used publicly and the DNS IP used on that server you own ("public") DNS which is the DNS responsible for public lookups (SOA) of that servername/domain?
If it is a public server and the DNS is correct any public DNS IP/server (which allows recursion from your IP) can be used on that server to look itself up.
What does "hostname" in terminal on that server say?
Remove any HOSTNAME=-ourdomain.net- from /etc/hostconfig on that server.

  • Ciscoworks Expert needed--RME show IP address instead of hostnames

Please take a look at the pics,
In RME and many other modules, it display the IP addresses , instead of the Hostnames as the ID for the devices(we want to use the hostnames for the devices). I saw the settings at Common Service/Global Setting was at IP(see the attach pictures). I then changed it into SysName and rediscover the devices. It didn’t work. It shows the same thing.
Anyone can advise me how to correct it?

I am new in domain system, i set up domain controller myself at my office, every thing was working fine, but after 3 or 4 days outlook was unable

According to your description, Outlook on client machines couldn’t receive emails until entered IP address of the Outgoing SMTP server? What about sending emails, are there any issues?
In addition, have you tried to run NSlookup.exe in command prompt as Sean suggested?

  • JDBC Connections showing IP Address instead of Hostname

We have recently installed BEA WebLogic Integration 8.1 with SP4. Our first implementation of BEA WebLogic Server was with 6.1 with SP3. The JDBC Datapool connections to our SQL Server showed the Hostname of the physical machine the BEA Server was on, in addition to the application it was using to connect with. The current implementation of 8.1 with SP4 shows the IP address instead of the Hostname and DOESN'T show the application that is being used to connect with. Is there any way to force it to show the hostname and the application it's using to connect to the SQL server via the JDBC connection pool?

  • NAM shows MAC address instead of IP address in host

    Hi,
Product: Cisco Prime NAM Appliance 2304
    Version: 5.1(3)
Problem: We only can see MAC address on Hosts table in NAM, not IP address.
Does anyone know what happen and how to fix it?
    Thanks!!!

I wouldn't worry too much about the address shown in the Remote Management tab.  The ARDAgent process, which is what is listening on his computer for connections from Remote Desktop, binds to all active network interfaces and ultimately that's all that matters. Of out curiosity though, to what IP address does the "unknown-b8-8d-##-##-##-##.home" dns name resolve?  Is it the WAN address?  I can't imagine it resolves to a private address like a 192.168.
In any event, let's focus back on the network structure. Does the BT router have both a hard wired LAN ethernet port as well as a WiFi radio for LAN connections?  My guess is yes. I am also assuming that he does *not* have another router attached to the BT LAN ethernet port like an Airport basestation that is serving the WiFi connections.  Typically, the LAN ethernet port is given, via DHCP, a real Internet accessible address but the addresses served via DHCP for wireless clients are private network addresses only.  It's seems unlikely to me that the router is automatically forwarding incoming connections to a private network address on the WiFi network.  But if he plugs his Mac in to the ethenert LAN port on the BT router then you should be able to connect directly to the address given to it via DHCP because it *should* be a real Internet accessible address.

  • Customer used IP address instead of domain name

A customer of mine used the IP address in his XML feed instead of the domain name. I recently moved servers not knowing that he had done this and the old server is gone. How can I help him fix this? I have already gone into his xml and changed every one of the IP addresses to reflect the NEW address, but I am not certain that this will help.
    Thanks.

That's a good start. Problem is that when he submitted his podcast he probably used the IP address there as well. iTunes is probably still looking at the IP address URL. Changing the URL that iTunes has on file for a podcast is tricky. There are only two ways to do it. Either by using a 301 redirect on the old server which will point iTunes in the direction of the new server and feed or by using the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag in the OLD XML file on the old server to point it in the correct direction. By either method, iTunes needs to be able to access the old location in order to update it to the new one. If the IP address and server no longer exist and can't be recreated the only other solution, removing and re-submitting the feed may be the only option.

    Hi,
your WebLogic server is not setup to listen for the IP address. You can change this in the WLS console for the server configuration. Note that when you install WLS and don't define any hostname then it will listen to all addresses (which also is the default for the integrated WLS)

  • DCR Shows Ip address instead of Hostname in Ciscoworks LMS 3.1

I've struck a problem with not being able to update the device hostnames when I do a discovery.
I'm aware of bug CSCsv65933 Discovery does not update display name in DCR and have ordered an upgrade.
I am still concerned however that there may be something more fundamentally wrong in the name resolution process.
Testing name resolution using the resolver.pl script fails for reverse lookups. Reverse lookups using nslookup work fine (output below)
    D:\Program Files\CSCOpx\bin>perl resolver.pl 192.168.36.7 BNE3750-A-L31
    d:\PROGRA~1\CSCOpx/www/classpath/com/cisco/nm/cmf/desktop

    Name:    bne3750-a-l31.acme.com.au
    Address:  192.168.36.7
Based on other posts I studied it would appear that resolver.pl should do reverse lookups.  Any clues why it might be failing for me.

  • Terminal-IP address instead of computer name is showing

Hi, my computer is behaving strangely lately and I noticed that in terminal the host name is displayed like this:
    c-XX-XXX-XX-XX-XXX:~ myusername%
with XX numbers corresponding to my actual IP address
When I looked in my 1 month old backup, it is displayed correctly there with an actual drive name.
In addition, the current shell is tsch, despite the fact that I am running OSX10.4.11 where it is supposed to be bash as far as I understand.
Is displaying IP address in terminal instead of computer name normal? If not, how to reset this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    BDAqua,
    My report:
    1. Moved preferences.plist from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist into trash.
    2. rebooted.
    3. Computer now shows [localhost] in terminal as a host name-success. However, now Internet does not work.
    4. Went to System preferences>Network>Built-in-Ethernet. There was a blank page (all settings gone).
    5. No matter. Inputed comcast.net in Search domains field (Comcast is my provider). Clicked on Apply now. All settings came back, internet works.
    6. Now Terminal again shows my IP as a host name, but at least I know that this change came from Comcast.
Unexpected benefit: Apparently this procedure got rid of annoying "Your settings are being modified by another application" bug-Good to know, thanks.
Conclusion: For some reason Comcast sees fit to modify Terminal settings.
Big thanks for making the problem clearer.

If i understand what you are saying then you are seeing the WiFi indicator after connecting but Apps are saying that they are not connected to the internet?
Your router may not have given your iPod a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be to restart your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPod (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

Programs usually aren't the biggest culprits in terms of space usage, it's normally data files that take up more space. This kind of huge library really is best installed on an external drive, provided you don't mind carrying it around with you. Here's how you install it on an external:

  • How do you host a domain and several email addresses from that domain with OS X Server?

Right now I have a domain name through GoDaddy.com and one email address to that domain...we will have about 5-8 in total...How do I setup OS X Server to host our own domain (without using GoDaddy) and setup our own mail server?

There are several steps that you would need to do.
Set up OS X Server with mail services and users. Also, you may have to have your OS X mail server relay messages through your ISP so you can email people at other domains.
Set up firewall/router to forward IMAP/POP and SMTP ports from your external IP address to your server (which is either in the DMZ of the firewall or on LAN).
Set up DNS records so your domain name points to your server (and if you do not have a static IP address, you will need to set up dynamic DNS). At a minimum you will need 2 DNS records: an A (or AAAA for IPv6) record for the server (I think it can be the root of the zone) and a MX (mail exchange) record.
If everything is set up correctly, you should have a mail server hosting on your domain with your server.
Those would be the major steps you would need to complete. Details on the exact procedure for each of these steps can be found reading the OS X Server documentation, documentation for your router/firewall for port forwarding/NAT, and your specific DNS service.

  • DNS server returns IP addresses even for domain na...

Like a number of other people I have been looking at the BT Broadband service and have found that there is an issue with the current DNS server. What I / we have found is that the DNS server returns IP addresses even for domain names which should not resolve. See following -
    DNS results wildcarding (?): Warning
Your ISP's DNS server returns IP addresses even for domain names which should not resolve. Instead of an error, the DNS server returns an address of 92.242.132.15, which resolves to unallocated.barefruit.co.uk.
There are several possible explanations for this behavior. The most likely cause is that the ISP is attempting to profit from customer's typos by presenting advertisements in response to bad requests, but it could also be due to an error or misconfiguration in the DNS server.
The big problem with this behavior is that it can potentially break any network application which relies on DNS properly returning an error when a name does not exist.
The following lists your DNS server's behavior in more detail.
    www.{random}.com is mapped to 92.242.132.15.
    www.{random}.org is mapped to 92.242.132.15.
    fubar.{random}.com is mapped to 92.242.132.15.
www.yahoo.cmo [sic] is mapped to 92.242.132.15.
    nxdomain.{random}.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu is mapped to 92.242.132.15.

Any DNS that can not get resolved goes via this service and returns a page showing paid adverts and/or links related to what they think you were looking for.
BT refer to this as 'BT Web Address Help' and can be turned off on an opt-out basis via this link: http://preferences.webaddresshelp.bt.com/selfcare/
I assume BT's view is this helps improve the user experience and provides some directed help instead of a blank error page.

You need to link your iPhone number to Messages - and Facetime if you use it. For Messages go to Settings>Messages>Send and Receive at>You can be reached by iMessage at. Hi Sunny C,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The "From" field should be showing by default, but you can check or change your settings for Mail with the instructions below:
    Mail (Yosemite): Set Mail preferences
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19178
In the Composing pane, you can set the email account that you want to send new messages from.
Also, check the View command on the Menu bar.  View > Message Attributes should have a checkmark beside the "From" field.
