Prompt to Hold down power button to restart MBP
I have not had any major problems with my MBP despite a few freezes, but recently i had plugged in my old ipod touch in the USB jack. Within a couple of minutes of syncing the ipod touch, a gray screen descended which prompted me (in different languages as well) that i was required to hold down the power button immediately and restart my computer. i have no clue what happened and hope there is no internal damage to the hardware or software or viruses although i am aware that Mac's "cant" get viruses

iPhone 5s intermittently powers off. I have to do a hard restart (simultaneously hold down power button and home button). Is there a cause and a fix for this?
Hello TJLapplesupportcom,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue you're having with your iPhone.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?
Contact Apple Support.

Try a SMC Reset first
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Then it could be a failed firmware update
need to know the right machine and download it here

What's with the hold down power button screen?
The OS locked up and then a screen with several different languages popped up saying something about holding down the power button to restart the computer.

Do i create bad disk sectors when holding down power button?
Hello - My mac happened to freeze (Snow Leopard 10.6.1) and the only thing I was able to do was hold down the power button to restart. In the process of doing this I was concerned that I may have damaged my hard drive.
Can somebody verify that this was or wasn't good and is there anyway to check the sectors?
ThanksYou will not damage the drive by forcing a shutdown, but you can clobber data on the drive.
If you are concerned then run "Repair Permissions" and "Verify/Repair Disk" from Disk Utilities. -
Help! While doing workaday tasks on my 15" MacBook Pro with 10.6, I got the dreaded slowly unfolding darkened screen with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off." Kernel panic, I guess.
In the past, in the few times this has ever happened to me, I held down the Power button as instructed, and the Mac turned off.
HOWEVER, this time around, holding down the Power button does absolutely nothing! It doesn't make the computer turn off, no matter how long I hold it down, nor if I try holding it down in combination with other keys.
Needless to say, the OS is completely frozen otherwise, and no keyboard or trackpad actions have any effect.
And since this is the new kind of MacBook Pro -- there's no way to remove the battery!
So, is the only solution, to unplug it from the power supply and simply wait for 8 hours (or whatever) until the battery runs out of juice? Say it ain't so!
(I'm writing this on someone else's computer, needless to say.)
I NEED access to my computer's files TODAY for important work-related matters. Am I out of luck, or is there some secret way to get this darn thing turned off and restarted? If you insist! :

White screen of death but can see screen when hold down power button?
I've had my iPod Touch 4g for a few months (in December it will be a year) and for the past two months, I haven't been able to use it because of the white screen of death. I tried reseting it, restoring it (which didn't work because of error 1394 or something like that) and NOTHING seemed to work. Today, I decided to try restoring it again, and it worked!...for all of two hours.
Now I have the white screen of death but it shows the screen if I lightly hold down the power button (not enough that it clicks).
I've tried restoring it again, but it stays the same- white screen of death that shows the screen when I lightly hold down the power button.
Can anyone help me :\Contact Apple and get it replaced/serviced.

It said Hold Down Power Button Upon Shutdown
Hi.I have the late iMac 2009 with 8GB and the latest OS X . The memories were installed by Apple. I've had this since March 2010. I don't leave it 24 hours ON or any. I have Boot Camp at 80GB For the first time when I shut it down it said hold the power for 4 seconds. It looked like a hardware error. Is it normal from time to time? Is it the Seagate hard drive or the memory? What can I use to test this iMac if it's OS and components are all good? Please advice. Thank you in advance.

if it looked like this ...
you've see a *kernel panic*
read all about KP's here _*Resolving Kernel Panics*_ and here _*http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546*_. for OS X 10.6 specifically, see this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html.

I can get it started when I hold the button down, but then it's extremely slow. What can I do? I ran disk repair yesterday, then it worked fine, right until it just crashed an hour ago while I tried to wake it from 'sleep mode'.
I thankfully got to update my Time Machine on my external harddrive yesterday when I finally got it working.
Anyone who can tell if there's anything I can do to get it up and running again? If this started happening without your having made any changes and without a warning of low disk space, then it's likely that the boot drive is failing, or that there's some other hardware fault. Run the Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics.
Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly. -
It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a DVD or a CD it just won't eject :-(
Is there a very small pin hole, just inside the drive opening on the right? If true, you can very gently press the tip of a paperclip into this hole (with the machine on) to eject the disk.
With the mini off. Turn it upside down and thunk the bottom with your hand a couple of times. This may dislodge that stuck drive sufficiently to allow normal eject.
It may be possible to (again gently) pry up on an edge of that stuck disc with an old, unused credit card.
If you made it this far, better make an appointment with an Apple store to have the drive removed, disassembled, and reinstalled. If you go this route, might as well upgrade the memory too if it needs it.
