Propagate Permissions grayed out

Hi,
I recently have taken over a Mac file server, os version 10.4.10. I have a sharpoint named DOCUMENTS. I am trying to add a group to that sharepoint. The problem is that propagate permissions is grayed out. I've logged in using root and as the user who created the folder, but still no luck.
As a test, I created another folder (TEST) under that sharepoint, then a subfolder (TEST2). So it looks like DOCUMENTS/TEST/TEST2. I added a user to TEST. Propagate permissions is still grayed out.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to get this to work?

The rights you want to propagate cannot include root. This is one reasone why the button will be grayed.

  • Repair disk permissions grayed out

    Hello,
I have a WD External Drive that I use for Time Machine backup. Recently have had no backup (about 20 days) and finally decided to look into it. I use this one at work and have brought it home to work on what is wrong. Have tried to repair disk permissions, but option is grayed out. I have however been able to repair disk. It took 8 hours to repair disk which reported no problems.
I have tried to copy files from the backup disk to another disk, but it won't work (don't remember exact message-but it was something odd).
From another thread, I was trying to do this command:
    sudo /usr/sbin/chown _installer:admin /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
    and got this response:
    Home-Power-Mac-G5:~ paul$ sudo /usr/sbin/chown _installer:admin /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
    Password:
paul is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
so, I then try this command:
    ls -leO /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
    and get this response:
    -rw------- 1 _installer wheel - 266133504 Dec 15 22:03 /Library/Receipts/db/a.receiptdb
WHAT do I do now? I want to first back up all files then reformat drive to start anew.

    Hi Christopher Graham;
Since Repair Permission is repair the permissions for the system there has to be a system on the partition in order to not have that button ghosted. As far as Disk Utility can tell a Time Machine backup is not a System hence it is ghosted.

  • Verify/repair permissions grayed out in disk utility

I recently replaced my main hard drive and now when I go into Disk Utility the option to verify and repair disk permissions is not available on the other drives that were in the machine before the upgrade
I am thinking it's a permission issue but not sure what needs to be set to fix it

No problem. It puzzled me for a while. Now I check it every time I format a drive since DU doesn't correctly set the permissions needed. It's a pain that when you clone one startup drive to another, say for backup, and erase the destination in advance that the drive's ownership and permissions will be wrong. Then you try repairing permissions like the OP did and find those options are grayed out, and you are staring at the monitor trying to figure out why. PITA.

  • Repair Permissions Grayed Out On External Drive

I was having some strange issues with my firewire disk in Final Cut Pro so I decided to repair the premissons using disk utility. For some reason "repair premissions" is grayed out. I did a repair disk and everything showed to be fine, but repair premissions is still grayed out.
Any idea what's going on? Or what I should do?
    Thanks.

    Rick,
Did you ever solve this problem? I'm having the exact same issue. I have a Late 2011 MBP 17" with the i7 2.5. I have 16GB RAM installed and a Samsung 830 250GB SSD in the original HD spot with a 750GB Hybrid drive in the optibay. When a heavy load is being placed on the 750gb drive, it'll unmount and I will get the "didn't eject" error. I have to turn it off for about 5 minutes then boot it to have the drive recognized again. I especially notice this when I'm running VMWare Fusion along with my Mac and the Windows side is having to do some "hard" work.

  • Lion "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" grayed out

    Please help!

Repair using Disk Utility was OK on the volumes, but Repair for the drive was grayed out.
That's very odd.  Is your drive G.U.I.D?
Boot into Safe Mode (Hold Shift-Key), then boot normally.

  • External Drives Locked. Permissions grayed out

Ever since upgrading to SL, my external FW800 drives have been locked to 'read only'. When I open the 'Get Info', the option to unlock or change permissions has been disabled. I can unlock the disks by running Disk Warrior, but each time I restart, the disks are locked again. Is this a bug?

Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Repair Disk Permissions is Grayed Out

I have a 2011 iMac with an internal SSD as the boot and another internal 2TB drive. I was working with an HTML file but was unable to display any JPGs/PNGs file in any of the browsers correctly. The files are located on the 2TB drive. I think this could be a permissions issue. If I copy and access those same files on the boot drive instead, the JPGs/PNGs displayed fine via HTML. I launched Apple's Disk Utility and when I select the 2TB, both Permissions buttons are grayed out. The Verify and Repair Disk buttons are working fine. I ran those anyway. No problems there.
So why are both Permissions buttons grayed out for the internal 2TB and how can I fix this?

Thanks for clarifying. I am still trying figure out what is it about the internal SSD boot drive and the 2TB drive that seems to interfere with displaying the pixel base files. This is the scenario.
I am following a tutorial on Lynda.com called "Design the Web: Illustrator to Animated HTML5 Canvas." I am using a plug in called Ai2CanvasMac with Adobe Illustrator, It essentially generates an HTML file from an Illustrator file. The Illustrator file has an embedded PNG file as a background image and a small vector graphic in front and centered. After the plug-in generates the HTML file, it automatically opens the file up in the browser. This is where I am getting mixed results.
If the files I am working with are on the 2TB, the PNG does not display in any of the browser correctly. If I work with the same files on the SSD boot drive. The PNG displays fine.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

  • My own user ID is grayed out in sharing/permissions.  Why?

I just moved to a new (to me) Mac Pro.   I can't update any files in my data folder that I copied from my old Mac.  When I tried to save a changed file, it asks me for my password, giving me my ID as xxxxxx (for example).  I enter my password (I know it's correct), which it accepts, and it then says I don't have update access to that file.  When I go into Get Info/Sharing & Permissions, and click on the + the ID xxxxxx is grayed out!  In other words, even though I'm logged in as the administrator it won't let me add that ID.  I know I'm logged in as an administrator because I can unlock the lock in the bottom right corner of the Get Info dialog box.
    What is the problem?

Because this site is malfunctioning, I can't post instructions here. Find them on the page linked below.
This procedure will unlock all your user files

  • Windows Server's "Components Services" and "Regedit" permissions are grayed out for my Admin Account

I am working with Developers who are using TFS to do their work and they suddenly get authentication error when they are connecting to TFS remotely through Visual Studio.
When I checked Event Viewer, this is the error I am getting.
"The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} and
APPID {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC).
This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool."
By checking through the "component services" to edit the permissions, I found that they were grayed out.
I moved to "regedit" next to try to enable the permissions from there, went to edit those keys....
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AppID\{000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
And found that it was not giving me access to edit it !!
What is the fix for this issue ?

There will be another similar event logged at a similar time, which you will need to correct, but first you need to adjust the Registry permissions for this {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} [MSIserver] COM problem.
It's similar to these [SharePoint] errors: grant yourself/admins permission to this key, then you can apply the needed corrections via Component Services admin tool for the TFS/VS COM problem.

  • Grayed out repair permissions in disk first aid

on a large external drive which once was read/write is now read only in 10.5
    permissions read:
    user(Me) Read&Write - false info
    (unknown) Read&Write
    everyone Read&Write - false info
    ignore ownership is checked
the internal and system drive appear clean of this issue
other posts mention how directories within the internal get this bug but it seems no one is having an external permissions issue.
    i am.
    i've tried:
disk utility but repair permissions is grayed out for that drive whether from the install disk boot or the internal.
various unix solutions but all return a "denied" statement
creating accounts with a 80 GID as well as assorted system and admin groups
attaching the drive to a mac running 10.4 but permissions arent accepting changes there either.
now i know some of you are thinking back off the drive and initialize it.
you're right but it is sizable and would be costly in time and hardware to manage that.
so it seems a matter of running a repair on permissions would be best...
but how to enable the option?

In general whatever the problem it is NOT a good idea to run DU file permissions on an external drive. Permissions only apply to the active OS on the active drive.
If the external drive is a bootable system, then you can run the proper DU on it, but only when it is the actual system.

  • Propagate Permissions...

Workgroup Manager has stopped giving me the option to propagate permissions. It's just grayed out. What have I done?

    Hi
As the other post has already advised. However there is another possibility. Propagating permissions may be grayed out because (a) you have disabled ACLs or somehow ACLs have been disabled (b) there is a problem with the drive/directory structure. If you are only using standard POSIX permissions then look under the Protocols tab and re-define them from there. If ACLs are enabled, disable them, Save, unshare any sharepoints and restart the server. Re-enable them, Save, re-share share points and restart the server.
If there is a problem with the drive/directory structure, boot from the installer disk and run DU's repair disk on all volumes as well as repairing privs/permissions for the boot drive. Consider using something more robust in addition to DU, something like DiskWarrior, Drive Genius, TechTool Pro etc. You may be ultimately looking at backing up, reformatting and reinstalling. If all of your drive bays are not full you could purchase an similar or larger sized drive, install that, clone the existing server drive over and boot from that to see if the problem goes away. If you are going to clone a server boot drive make sure it is not active. Target disk mode is a good method of doing this.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Cluster (sub menu) submit button grayed out

    hello all
as of today my compressor has stopped allowing me to submit the batch i set up.
having sent an item from FCP to compressor, i get to set the options for settings and destination and then when i hit the submit button a second menu pops down regarding cluster options of which i have none. i add a name to this box yet no mater what other options i change the *submit button in this sub menu remains grayed out!*
    http://twitpic.com/jj7n2
i have tried reinstalling compressor, and eventually the whole suit. i have removed the various prefs and qmaster stuff. i have used the fix compressor utility from digital rebel, repaired permissions and cleared out cache, but still *grayed out submit*.
    what thoughts cloud genii?

    I'm having the same problem.
This comes after suffering persistent crashing of Compressor 3.5 on launch and finally having to reinstall to at least fix the crashing problem. But now I can't submit any processes - the button is greyed out.
Can't remember setting this up originally, but it use to say "This Computer" for processing - do I need to add my computer to a list of available processors?
    Any help hugely appreciated,
    Simon

  • In DCOMCnfg "Run application on this computer" is grayed out for my application on two Windows 7 machines, but it works fine on all other machines

We have a COM application that is installed on hundreds of machines around the country.  We have instructions included in our install doc of how to set up DCOMCnfg.  On one machine in the field and one machine in our lab (both happen to be Windows 7 machines) the checkbox "Run application on this computer" on the location tab in DCOMCnfg is grayed out and therefore we cannot access our engine remotely.
I turned off UAC before installing  (we found that the install works much better than way)  and it is actually still off.  I do not get any DCOM errors in the Windows Event logs when I try to access via DCOM, I just get the standard -2147023174 Server Error.  I have added CallFailureLoggingLevel to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE and set it to 1 to enable logging, but still no errors in the event logs.
I pulled a DCOMTest utility off of the Microsoft site.  Initially it failed, but there were entries in the event logs indicating that it did not have the permissions it needed.  I opened up those permissions and now that test utility works fine.  So, DCOM is functioning between the two computers.
This application is used with DCOM by hundreds of people, so I know the application should be working properly.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled to verify that everything is registered properly.  I have tried turning off the firewall and the anti-virus.  I am logged in as an administrator
I am at a loss.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
This issue can occur if the current user profile does not have enough permission or related system file is corrupted. Please try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
    1. Assure the current user account has administrator permission. If not, please add it to Administrators Group and then test the issue again.
    2. Restart the machine in Safe Mode and logon to the machine with the account: administrator. Then, please check whether the option is grayed out.
    3. If the option is still grayed out, please try this step.
    a. Open C:\Windows\System32 folder and change the ownership of the ComUID.dll file from "trusted installer" to administrators group.
    b. Rename that file as ComUID.dll.org
    c. Copy the attached ComUID.dl_ file from the Windows 7 installation disk to C:\Windows\System32 folder and rename it to ComUID.dll
    Thanks,
    Novak

  • Disk utility says repair needed but repair grayed out

I ran a disk utility verification, which indicated that repair was necessary.  However the repair option was grayed out.  How do I effect a repair?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Save for Web and Device Grayed menu grayed out

Using Photoshop 11.0.1 (CS4) and Mac OSX 10.5.6), I have an action that saves a retouched file first as a high quality jpg and then as a optimized jpg for the web. It has worked fine in the past, but today when running the action I received a warning that the Export command was not available. I tried manually exporting the using the Save for Web and Devices menu item, but it is grayed out and not available. The file is sized to 1024 pixels on the longest side, no layers and in 8 bit mode.
So far I have done the following:
Trashed the Save for Web preference file
    Repaired permissions
    Scanned for viruses
    Rebooted the system
Any other ideas short of a reinstall?
