Proper Backup???

I have my iphone activesync to an exchange server.
What is the best way for me to back up my data on my iphone(personal settings, ringtones, apps, etc.) so that if I do run into a problem and have to reset my phone I will not have to re-do all that?
Please help.
Thanks

I recall reading somewhere purchased songs could not be transfered from HD to HD
You've misread that information or it just was plain nonsense.
Your purchased song are just files like any other audio file.
They can be transferred to any storage medium (HD, Data CD/DVD, Zip, memory stick etc.)
If you do a clean install, save your entire iTunes folder including the important library files
Hope this helps.

  • How can I tell if I am getting a proper backup?

I am a new Mac owner and have a Time Capsule for backups. How do I know/see my backups and or set the times for backup?

The built in backup software in the Mac is called Time Machine.. The Time Capsule is nothing but a target for the backups..
TM has automatic settings to backup hourly.. it is better to leave it alone and let it do its thing.
Please read the TM FAQ here for more info about TM.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
The question in your heading is a hard one. There is no way really to tell if a backup is actually going to work without restoring it.
Time Machine will attempt to verify the backup but the proof of the pudding is in the eating .. as they say.
Doing a test restore is not fun but you can have a try.
If you want a more reliable backup which you can test immediately. Use Carbon Copy Cloner and simply make a clone to a USB drive.. this is bootable.. so you instantly know if the clone is good.. it will act and behave exactly as the internal disk and you will see all the files and applications as you had them before.. that is secure backup method.

  • Proper Backup Procedures with External Hard Drives

I use external firewire drives for all of my photos and I have a quick question about backup procedures. I currently use Intego's Personal Backup X5 software solution and I wanted to know whether it is better to backup your files or Sync your files when making duplicate drives?

Aperture's vault function will "sync" your library with your vault. This means that the vault will only hold one specific version of your library, which is fine for most users. The vault file will be more or less the same size as your Aperture library file.
If you want to make incremental backup of your library (which will allow you to restore specific versions of your library) then you could take a look at "Backup 3" which can be downloaded in a trail version here:
    http://www.mac.com/1/solutions/backup.html
Incremental backup will mean that your initial backup file plus all your incremental backup files will fill up more space on your harddisk than the size of your Aperture library. (incremental = adding)

  • DAG Database Storage Location in addition to Configuring a Proper Backup/Restore Policy

Hello everyone! I have two questions that have LOTS of detail so I'll jump right into describing our Exchange 2010 layout and then the questions:
    EXCHANGE SERVERS:
    - cvnit-ex01.***.***.*** - Hub,CAS,MB
    Database: MBDB1
    - cvnit-ex02.***.***.*** - Hub,CAS,MB
    Database: MBDB2
    - Both exchange servers have one DB and they are both part of the same DAG.
    - Another server is the DAG witness server.
    - Only two servers in forest.
    - Members of CASArray, using 3rd part DNS for round-robin
    - DAG failover has been actively tested and works - users with mailboxes on MBDB2 experience less than 5 seconds of an outage if I shut off cvnit-ex02
OKAY, so here is my question/statement. I spent a lot of time on the storage side creating LUNs for each exchange server to hold its edb and logs. For example, on cvnit-ex01:
    MBDB1.edb = G:\
    MBDB1 logs = H:\
I then also created a separate LUN, assuming I could tell DAG where to store the passive copies of a database on the target server.
    "passivedb.edb" = I:\
    "passive logs" = J:\
The problem is, I see DAG copied the DB from cvnit-ex01 over to cvnit-ex02's G:\ drive. Is there any way I can configure it to store the copied databse on that separate, designated LUN (I:\ for edb and J:\ for logs)?
The end goal would be for ex01 and ex02 to have four drives EACH: 2 for its primary db and logs, and two for the passive db and logs. Both edb files are relatively the same size and the capacity of the LUNS holding the passive copies is not an issue.
    On to the other one...
Is there any step-by-step instruction on how to properly enable DAG backups of databases so that I can use lagged copies and then in turn enable circular logging? Keep in mind that this is a fresh exchange 2010 installation and implementation, and I still
have time before it goes into production. I don't quite understand the whole "need three copies of databases and a lagged copy" ordeal.
    Thank you in advance!

for the 1st question: No, that letters must match. If the Database is on the G: drive and you replicate to another server, G: must exist.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979802(v=exchg.141).aspx
All copies of a database use the same path on each server containing a copy. The database and log file paths for a database copy on each Mailbox server must not conflict with any other database paths.
I was not a big fan of lagged copies in Exchange 2010. Some instructions:

  • Proper Backup Before Upgrade

    Gang,
I will soon upgrade to 10.4. As I always do it will be a clean upgrade. This means a full backup is needed. Can I assume the only thing I need is a complete copy of my personal user directory or are there 'pointer' files elsewhere I need as well? My main concern here is iTunes, iPhoto and Mail.
    TIA,
    James

An external hard drive with a clone of your entire system is your best backup solution. That way, after you install 10.4 you can use Setup Assistant to port over data, files, settings etc. Make sure it is firewire so that it is bootable. Two good brands are the LaCie d2 and OtherWorldComputing's Mercury Elite drive.
I keep mine with a complete system and all my software on it, that way it is easy to boot from the external and run utilities like Disk Utility, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior, etc. on the internal and vice versa.
I also backup of all my data to it at the end of each day. I use Retrospect Express which does an "incremental" backup, that only overwrites the files that were worked in since the last backup. Then if diaster ever strikes, I just boot up my external and keep working - fix the internal when I have time.
Short of this solution, backing up your Home folder is a second best solution. But you will have to re-install third party apps and reset some system prefs.
If you choose this method, here is a list of where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "home"):
    Your data in ~/documents
~/library/application support/addressbook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/library/application support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~/library/application support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /library/keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/library/mail (copy the whole folder)
~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist *This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
~ /library/itunes (copy the whole folder)
~ /library/safari (copy the whole folder)
~ /library/imovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/pictures/iphoto library
    ~/music/itunes
    ~/movies/imovie
    If you want cookies:
    ~/library/cookies/cookies.plist
    ~/library/application support/webfoundation/HTTPcookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in documents/microsoft user data
    Also in ~ /library/preferences/microsoft
internet explorer favorites are in ~/library/preferences/explorer/favorites.html

  • Proper Backup of Apple Configurator

Has anyone else tied the Apple desktop or laptop they configured to use with Apple Configurator to a backup system yet and tried restoring?  I have read this Apple KB article, but wanted to know if there are any gotchas or anyone experienced anything else that was detrimental in their backups.  It says just to the ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.configurator directory is important, but this is a departure from the iPhone Configuration Utility where Apple representatives warned us about ever removing that device, because the certificates for signing profiles could never be exported to another system (despite certificate export utilities).  I do not know if I should be so worried, so I was curious if anyone else had experience.

I haven't tried what you are asking specifically "Has anyone else tied the Apple desktop or laptop they configured to use with Apple Configurator to a backup system yet and tried restoring?"
but I have moved the com.apple.configurator folder to other user accounts and computers and had Configurator work correctly under the other accounts and on the other computers.
The reason I've done this is because I've set up several mobile iPod carts. I originally prepared the iPods on an admin account on a MacBook that is with each cart. Then I moved the com.apple.configurator folder to the generic account that teachers and the school tech will use to manage the iPods at the schools. Apple Configurator hasn't complained about the move to a different user account.
I've also had to do some troubleshooting as I was learning to use Apple Configurator, so I would move the com.apple.configurator folder from the MacBook I was working on to my own computer, and once again, Apple Configurator worked without complaints, and retained all the settings, apps, etc. that I had set up in it on the MacBook.

  • Can a Time Capsule hard drive store external memory besides backups (eg. HD Video, iTunes library, ETC.)

I'm going to get a MacBook Pro soon, and I'm going to get the 256GB Flash Storage, but I will need extra memory, mostly because I edit a lot of HD video. I may store my iTunes library, but I'm not sure on that one (I currently have almost no songs, and my 254 GB hard drive is almost full on my PC! I do not plan to transfer all of my files, though, but in then long run, I will need more memory.)
I know that time capsule has 1 TB of memory, and it is marked as an external hard drive, and I know it's meant to store backups of your computer, but can it store things other than backups, and serve as a full external hard drive (Like a giant USB flashdrive), and store thing like HD Video, music, and any other sort of file?
I just need an external hard drive, and time capsule seems like a good option, but I need to know if it's for backups exclusively, or if you can store anything on it (Again, like a giant USB flashdrive!).
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to seeing the replys!
    --Wubadub

Ok..  the TC can be used as network hard drive.. you can put all your files on it.
BUT.. please think carefully about this.
The Time Capsule is designed for Time Machine as backup target.. principally for wireless laptops.
If you use large files remotely.. and by wireless .. they will take forever to load.. the TC is slow but wireless is even slower.
It is not a giant USB.. but you can buy a cheap USB drive now that we have USB3 on MBP latest version?? it is fast and cheap and a local drive.
Time Capsule has no raid.. no backup.. no protection against failure of the disk or the device or accidental deletion or corruption. That makes it unsuitable as a file store.
Apple do not sell a file store..
You can buy a true NAS.. Synology or QNAP.. Netgear also make some good ones.
Or you can get a Mac Mini and run it as file store.. with or without a server version OS.
Anything that offers you proper backup and fast file transfer.. which the TC fails to do.

  • Backup on External HD

I have to say I've never done backups before, but I'm about to go from Panther to Tiger and want to prepare by doing proper backups for both my iBook and iMac. This is a very basic question. I just purchased an Iomega 300GB external HD. If I backup my iMac G4 to it (I mean actually backup the entire HD using Retrospect or Super Duper), is the drive then unusable for dropping files on it - say copies of my iPhoto libraries, my documents file, etc. Can I backup both the iBook and the iMac on the same external drive?

    iMac G-4 w/Superdrive; iBook 14 1.2ghz combo drive; 40Gig iPod Photo   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Jim,
it all depends what kind of external hard disk you bought. If you bought a firewire drive you can do everything you need. If you bought a USB drive then you are out of luck since USB is not a bootable interface with MacOS X on PPC-based computers.
If you want to create bootable clones of both of your computers you will have to partition the backup drive. Personally I use Carbon Copy Cloner for these backups.
And yes, of course you can drag&drop files to that drive as you would do with any other hard disk.
If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

  • Disk Utility:  Backup to partition on external drive?

Hi people. Would be glad of an answer and any comments on this.
I have 3 Macs at home, a new G5 dual core and 2 G4 imacs, networked wirelessly. At this point I only backup my G5 to a second internal HD, by using Disk Utility's 'Restore' function.
My preferred plan is to get an external Firewire 400 drive, make 3 partitions on it, and do the Disk Utility 'Restore' for the 3 respective Macs. That way it's not only a backup, but a bootable solution if one of the machines dies.
My second choice is to add one of those generic network hard drives to the router and try to back up to that(essentially as an FTP/Samba disk), but it would be slow and not bootable at all.
Question: Will disk utility allow a partition, either on a firewire drive or network drive, to be the destination for a 'restore'? Or will it only recognise whole volumes?

    Hi, Daniel.
You wrote: "Question: Will disk utility allow a partition, either on a firewire drive or network drive, to be the destination for a 'restore'? Or will it only recognise whole volumes? "Disk Utility will recognize a volume (partition) on a FireWire drive as the destination for a Restore.
Using the Restore function for backup is quite time-consuming as it has to backup everything every time you perform a backup. You will get much faster results by using a proper Backup and Recovery solution that supports incremental backups, i.e. backing up just the changes from the source to the destination (backup) so that the two are synchronized. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
People have had mixed results using NAS (Network-attached Storage) for backups. I frankly think that it's still a bit early to try that route. Using an external FireWire drive has always given be good results.
    Good luck!

  • Backup to external drive question

Alright, so I have been trying to partition my Macbook HD for a little while now (to install Bootcamp), but it is now telling me to backup all data and format my HD.
So, after looking around for a little while, I found a backup program on the Apple download site called "SmartBackup". It says that I should be able to backup my information to any external HD. I have a 250GB external HD that is in NTFS format (so I can use it on my Windows Desktop, too).
My question is, will I have to partition the external drive to be in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format to do a proper backup? I've been a Mac user for a while, and this is my first time doing a full backup to an external HD. Also, if I partition my external drive, do you know if it will erase the data currently on the external drive?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
may I suggest a setup for the external HD with two partitions, one for OSX and one for NTFS:
Open Disk Utility (found in Applications / System Applications) - choose your external drive from the left pane - go to the Partition Tab - from Volume Scheme choose two partitions - set the size of the partitions - click on Options to verify that GUID is set - click on the first partition and choose HFS+ as file format - click on the second partition and choose MS-DOS (is FAT32) as file system
Start the process by clicking on Partition.
To get NTFS (if wanted) for the second partition you have to reformat it while in Windows since Disk Utility can not do this.
Use SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html to make a full bootable backup of your internal OSX system to the external HD (makes it easier to do what you need).
Caution: Using the a.m. procedure will delete all files that curently are on your external harddisk !

    Stefan

  • How to restore from Time Machine when backup is larger than HDD

In an attempt to upgrade my 13 inch, 8GB 2010 MacBook Pro (750 GB HDD) from Mavericks to Yosemite, the Yosemite install was stuck at "about a minute remaining" for hours (overnight).  So I cancelled the install and tried again only to be stuck at the same spot.  I took the mac to an Apple Genius Bar to have it looked at while it was stuck at that install step.  They couldn't fix it and did a fresh install of Yosemite.  Luckily, I had backed it up about a week before, so I wasn't losing a whole lot.  I attempted to restore from the Time Machine backup using Migration Assistant (2TB external USB 3.0) of the latest backup but the estimated time to restore from backup kept climbing to more than 150 hours.  Eventually it had an error message that there wasn't enough free space on the HDD (the same 750 GB drive that my backups were from).  There was less than 100GB of free space on the HDD before attempting the upgrade.
How can I restore at least a portion of my Time Machine backup, like my Documents and Apps?  I don't even mind going back to Mavericks so that I can use my computer again!  For example, I need MS Office but I cannot use it on Yosemite if I do not first get my original backup working again so that I can unregister the current version (the product key is "lost" with my inaccessible backups!).
Most of the information I can find online is how to prepare for a proper backup, but at this point since Apple Genius did a fresh install, Time Machine has my only backup!
    Any advice would be great!
p.s. This may be useful to know:  I had several virtual machines from Parallels: Windows, Ubuntu, etc before I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.  Mavericks required an updated Parallels that I never got but I'm sure those VMs are hiding in my backup drive.

OS X Yosemite: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.

  • Warning:  Don't use Time Machine to backup disk containing existing TM backup files

I ran into a problem while starting a clean TM backup on a new hard drive.  I found the solution on this board and wanted to do a clean post of it in case it might help someone else.
A few months ago, I had got a new external to put my Aperture referenced masters on.  When I first hooked up the drive, IIRC, I got a message from Time Machine asking me if I wanted to use that drive as a TM backup drive.  I didn't have a proper backup plan in place so I said "Sure why not" and never thought any more about it.  So that drive contained the TM backups as well as a lot of Aperture files.
Fast forward to now when I decide to do a proper backup plan including a new drive just for TM.  So last night, I hook up this new drive and tell TM to use it to backup my iMac as well as that previous external.  But I specify in the preferences that I want to exclude the old Backups.backupdb folder of course.  Great.  I go to bed expecting to find everything backed up the next morning.
Uhhhh... not!  This morning, the TM preference window is still spinning on "Excluding items" and it is currently at 35 millions!  (That millions with an "m").  ???  So I did a search on this board and found this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2520870?start=15&tstart=0
in which another user had a similar problem and, after fishing around a bit, Pondini discovered that this old Backups.backupdb folder was the source of the problem.
So I stopped TM, and this time I told it to exclude the whole original external drive. TM immediately started doing a proper backup which only took a few hours.
The one thing I wanted to point out is that even though Pondini suggested Excluding the old Backup.db folder, this apparently is not enough.  Because when you do that, it wants to go in there and exclude every little file one by one and for god knows what reason, there is a huge number of these buggers.
So it looks like if you have an external that contains an old TM backup, you have to copy the other files (the ones you want to keep) somewhere else, erase the drive and put those files back on it before you can do a TM backup of it.
Thank you to Pondini once again for his invaluable help.
    Bo

Thanks for your reply V.K. much appreciated.
I have gone into the options and I can see my external drives there, but for some reason I can't remove them from the exclusion list. I can add and remove the Laptop HD from this list, but for some reason the "-" button becomes disabled whenever I select the external Hard Drives.
Is there a reason for this? I've been using both drives for a while, so they are both Mac formatted.
    Thanks again.

  • Mail backup folders corrupted

I have been trying to restore my mail folders with Time Machine (total 10G or so). The actual restoration goes fine but the folders seem to have been corrupted in some way so when Mail is restarted it insists on re-importing all my mail. This process takes hours and invariably fails (Mail crashes out and on re-launch tries again to import and again fails after a couple of hours).
This seems to leave me having lost all mail for the last month (back to the last proper backup made with a normal backup utility), which is frankly pretty disastrous!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to recover the mail? I have re-restored several times both manually and with TM, and also overwritten the Mail prefs files. Is there any way to make TM restore the Mail folders properly so I just get back to the Mail status some hours ago, as Time Machine says it does?
I wonder if the corruption is because TM is trying to offer a single-message restore facility - I am not sure if I can turn this off so as to get a normal backup.
All help appreciated! I thought I was well-protected but I seem not to be!

Well in case it helps anyone there seems no way to get things back. Even a full system restore does not work - the (119,000) messages still need 'importing' and this still fails.
It is very frustrating that restoring a few (like the last month's) messages from within mail still fails - the messages can be seen and even read but not restored - TM eventually (an hour or so) freezes. This may be because the 'inbox' of a few hours ago shown in the TM window is not in fact this - it contains a massive 69,000 messages going back several years and takes 20m to load instead of only the last few months as it should.

    Dear Pierre F.;
Actually, I just added in my backup plan to have daily backup through RMAN, instead of COLD backup.
I have planned to take cold backup once a week. here is the side of data:
    *** datafile 410
    *** size of database : 86 GM
    *** relog files size : 250MB
    *** daily archive logs are : 250MB * 4(number of files) = 1GM aprox.
yes, time constraint is there; just because of the size of database. and we r going for 24/7
Is this script going to run only one per week ?
Ans: no I this was level 0 backup; i will take level 1 incremental backup with same script daily too.
Do you have any other RMAN script ?
ANS: no, I will modify same script for incremental.
after local copy of backup all backup files (RMAN) will be copy over network to backup server or we can install LTO tape device to copy directly from database server.
kindly advise me I am new in RMAN.
    regards;

  • Mounting a VMware netapp backup to retrieve deleted files

I've got a 2012 R2 server running a managed document suite (Laserfiche) on VMware vSphere Client 5.1 and some folders on the managed document software were deleted and need to be recovered.  Therefore I need to restore\mount a netapp backup of this VM from 6 or 7 days ago to recover the data (while the current server is still running) and I'm wondering what would be the best approach to take?
I've tried creating a new VM based upon the .vmdk file in the data store from the proper backup date with no joy, receiving an "Insufficient permission to access file" error.
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    Hello ProjectExtraSpa
Unfortunately once a file has been deleted from the unit it is gone.  There is not a "recycle bin" or undo deletion option even in the web interface.
For issues such as this keeping a valid backup in place would prevent human errors like this to cause data loss.
If the data on the unit is the only copy of the data, then it is not considered a "backup" even with RAID 1 running it would be considered primary/active storage.   RAID is not the same as a backup.
The recommended backup practice is to have two local copies of the data and a remote/offsite backup. i.e. the original copy on your computer or primary storage, a local backup such as usb drives or even another NAS/computer, then a offsite backup such as a remote NAS, cloud storage, periodically updated usb drive, etc.
If a good backup strategy is in place it becomes difficult for data loss by accidents, natural disasters, or malintent to occur.
