Proper Places to Install Applications

Hi everyone again,
It seems all I've been doing since I got the 2nd HD is asking questions.
But here is another one. I'm planning to purchase Final Cut Studio, sometime in the near future (I hope) and as we all know at installation, it takes quite a bit of a HD space. So, with this set up where should I install the program;
HD1 (where the application folder is and OSX is) 160GB about 90GB available.
HD2 (new HD where I am moving all of my docs) 500GB and will have about 400 available.
Now, logically, I should install FCS on HD1 as that's where the applications folder is and OSX is, BUT then I will have no space on it whatsoever, and I believe that I should have at least 15% of the free disk space available to allow for proper computer speed & operations. So, my other option is to install it on HD2, but can I do that? and How will performance of my machine be after that?
Please advice
Thanks

From what you state, you have not completed the process of moving docs to the 500GB drive. That being said, the easiest way to do what others have suggested - make the 500GB drive your boot drive - would be to put all your docs back onto the 160 and use a cloning utility to clone the 160 to the 500. I can recommend SuperDuper, it will clone (make an EXACT copy) of your boot drive (the 160) onto the target drive (the 500). You can then test the 500 to make sure your system will boot off of it, apps will run, etc. Once you have tested the 500 as cloned and are sure that it will boot correctly you can then erase the 160 and migrate your docs to it. The reason for moving your already transplanted docs from the 500 back to the 160 is that when SuperDuper clones a drive it erases the target drive first and then clones the data from the original to the target.
As far as how to add another 500GB drive to your system and then use the 160 as storage, I can recommend using an external Firewire enclosure that you can install the HD into. The only caveats I would make are, make sure the external firewire enclosure has a fan or fans to keep the HD cool, there are many brands available ranging from about $40-!00+ depending on what kind of case it is (single-bay/multi-bay etc.) Just make sure it has a fan. I CANNOT recommend external USB cases, from my experience they just have/cause problems. Check Other World Computing or the major Mac retailers or just Google external Firewire enclosure. Installation of a hard drive into an external case is easy - I have 3 external drives that I put together this way and have no issues once I figured out that you must have an enclosure with a fan.

  • I can't get an installed application to work on a ...

I've apparently installed divx player on my 6220 classic. It shows under the list of install applications in my application manager, but I've no idea where to find it or how to get it to work. There's nothing in my application folder itself.
Is there anything I'm not checking? I install PC Suite and accepted all possible updates I was asked for, before using the suite to install the downloaded divx player file.
    Appreciate any help.

have tried putting the style sheet in the same folder as the class file, tried
putting it in the Java Source folder, tried it all over the place really...In your web application, it should go in the same directory where you would put an HTML file or a JSP file. All those places you tried are places that the web server keeps hidden from clients. You should be able to request the CSS file from your browser in exactly the same way you would request an HTML or JSP file.

  • Installed application works fine for administrators, not for users - LV7.1.1

    Hi,
Someone must have posted this before, but I can't find it anywhere after much searching of the knowlege base and user forums. Feel free to point me in the right direction...
I have an application that loads and plays a wav file, and applies a filter while playing it back. The user may select the filter being used from the control panel. Filtering is done in1/8 second chunks, so changes in the filter appear instantanious.
I'm using LabView 7.1.1  (i.e. 7.1 with the 7.1.1 maintainence release applied). Filters have been created with the Digital Filter Design tool in the Signal Processing toolset.
I have created an installer using the application builder in LabVIEW. The runtime engine is included in the installation, as are the filter files.
Once installed on a target machine the application works fine for anyone logged on with administrator rights/privileges. For anyone with user or guest privileges the filter either doesn't re-load or isn't applied to the wav file regardless of the user's efforts on the control panel.
The audio file is however loading and playing back.
This problem is seen on W2k, WinXP Pro SP1 and Win XP Pro SP2. I can't comment on other O/S, that's all I have available to test on.
This is tricky to debug, as in the installed application you can't view or step through the source code.
Your ideas and observations much appreciated.

You're right Sacha, it takes almost no time to rate an answer. Only 4* for you, as the info is interesting and relevant, but in this instance I wanted to stick with read only access. These filter files are an integral part of my application, and I certainly don't want users changing them .
A little further investigation has provided the ideal fix for my needs. Burrowing down into the Read DFD coefficients.vi provided in the signal processing toolset I found the files are opened for read & write. The mode isn't actually wired, so read & write is selected as it's the default. As Windows only allows read access in this location to those with user privileges the files won't open.
I now have a modified version of Read DFD coefficients.vi that has the files opened for read only (this has to be done in 2 places).  I have tested this on Win2k and XP SP2, and it works exactly as I require. This is different to the user in your other thread Sacha, as they specifically want everyone to be able to write to their files.
Perhaps it's a question for the LV developers - should the Read DFD coefficients.vi be changed to only give read access? (assuming it hasn't been changed already in V8). I'm in no place to assess the impact on other users. As the .vi is only a read function, which opens the file, reads the coefficients and closes the file again I can't see how it would be a problem though - the write access isn't required.
Thanks to all for their help on this. Problem solved, and I'm a happy bunny .  (Thinks - what about some bunny smilies on the forum?)

  • All previously installed applications remain after "fresh" install of OS X 10.8.4

    Hey guys,
So this may or may not be a problem.  The issue is that I was having some system screen flickering/freezing on my Macbook Pro (Early 2011) so I decided to reinstall 10.8.4 Mountain Lion to see if this would solve the issue.  Went through the procedure of creating a reinstall flash drive and proceeded.  Chose the drive containing my old OS (10.8.4) and installed.  Process took about 1:30 hours to download and install necessary files.  When the OS install is complete and the machine boots back up nothing has changed.  All previously installed applications remained and the machine home folder is still named for the previous owner? (bought on ebay)  Does Apple auto reset all previous settings through my AppleID?  Or did this OS re-install not complete correctly?  I need to FULLY wipe this machine and after going through the process I am not even sure if anything took place.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

I am reading an article suggesting that I can use boot utility to format all drives if I boot into the recovery partition.  From there I can reinstall using the internet recovery.  Is this a wise move to avoid buying Snow Leopard?
The Early 2011 Mac originally came with 10.6
10.7 and 10.8 are paid upgrades tied to the previous owners AppleID, therefore you can't apply security updates to that previous owners copy as you don't have their AppleID and password.
The object to go back to Snow Leopard 10.6 is so that when you upgrade to 10.8, it's yours and you can upgrade all your paid software and operating system through the AppStore concept.
Later, if you need to erase and install 10.8 fresh, then yes, you use Internet Recovery or RecoveryHD as then your AppleID and password will work as intended and there is no need to use the 10.6 disks any longer, they can be sold if you wish as you don't have 10.6 on the machine anymore.

  • Uninstalled software deployed by SCCM still remains in Installed Applications

    Hi experts
I noticed when we manually uninstalled a software which was deployed via SCCM, in Software Center, under Installed Applications, the software is still listed as installed there.
I know the only way to make the software unlisted under Software Center is to remove the software deployment on the Primary Site Server, refresh the client policy and the software will disappear from the Software Center, but that means it will disappear for
all the other computers which will need the software as well. I don't think this is a workable solution.
Possible to share if the uninstalled software will automatically disappear from the Installed Application to Available Application? If yes, how long would it take, does it depend on the next cycle where the SCCM client get new policies from the Primary Site
    server?
The reason why I am asking this is because it might confuse the end user.
User: I thought you have uninstalled the software!
    IT: Yes we did
User: Then why is it still listed under Installed Application in Software Center. It is bugging me! You didn't do your job.
    Thank you

    Hi,
You could check AppEnforce.log and CIAgent.log to confirm the current state for this application after running the Application Deployment Eval Cycle.
    1. Find the ScopeID of the application in AppEnforce.log.
    2. According to the ScopeID, check the current state for this application.

  • My TaskSequence aborts prior to installing applications

Hi guys, so I've been using a task sequence that lets the user pick and install applications from a list.
For halv a year now without any issues.
a few days ago I upgraded the server from SP1 to R2, I thought that everything was now set as it was suppose to..
but apperently its not. Cause my task sequence aborts.
Right after installing drivers, it restarts then goes to windows.. it leaves this folder behind
C:\_SMSTasksequence  - filled with stuff in it. furthermore no applications are installed.
I googled the folder cause I had never seen it before and its clear this is still here because the task sequence aborts unexpectedly
As the task sequence is completely identical to the one before I upgraded to R2, I don't understand whats wrong.
Hoping you can help me decode the log so I can start looking at what issues there might be, here is the

Whats really weird about these 2 applications is, that they aren't deployed to the variable..
They are however deployed to the collection the device is placed in.
I need a place to start... cause the logs dont help me much at this point.

hi Peter and thx for the answer.
are you refering to main.cpp:319 ?  I see you are right it does have three digits there.
First I wanna say I'm sure you are right its somewhere here the problem lies. My UDI Wizard that I use to Display applications on a list, got updated aswell and I had to redo settings.
    I wanna point out again
This task sequence I'm about to show did work prior to the Update from SP1 to R2..
    Convert List to two digits:
I already have a step thats suppose to convert to, two digit numbers in my TaskSequence. Anyways here is my step, do you see any problems with that?
    Install Application
And here is the step where I set a variable for installing applications, in UDI Wizard I use the same variable, to display and select from a list of 15-17 apps.
    UDI Wizard
And here to show you what COALSCEDAPPS is pointing too.
(This I had to rename, it had 'APPLICATIONS' set as variable after the update)
I did however try both without luck

  • Linux installing applications requires root password.

Can anyone explain to me why it is that on Linux, Air
requires a root password to install an application even if the
installation directory is specified as somewhere within my own home
    directory?
That it asks for a root password under such circumstances
seems very wrong. The application files are being written to my
home directory, I don't need to be root to write there and I do not
want files being created in my home directory with root as the
owner, as Air does when it installs an application.
Asking for the root password also means that users who have a
Linux machine that is administered for them by someone else and do
not have root are unable to install Air applications themselves
even if the administrator has installed Air on their
    machine.

First of all, on behalf of myself (and anyone else who has
been wondering about this particular detail of Adobe AIR) let me
thank you for your helpful reply. This does still leave me with a
    couple of questions, however...

AIR applications are similar to regular native applications -
they install as native rpm/deb packages. This requires access to
the rpm/deb system database (e.g. rpm database lock). And this is
required even if the installation folder is chosen to be one that
is owned by the current non-root user. In addition, with root
privileges, it's also possible to install applications to a
location that is accessible to other users on the system.
I have confirmed for myself the accuracy of this information
and I thank you for pointing it out. While this does make some
sense on the surface, it does leave me wondering something about
the security level of this install process. When I install
applications from my Linux distribution's package sources, I have
GPG (or PGP) cryptographic key signatures ensuring that all the
packages are un-altered from their original form on the
distribution's package servers, and a team of programmers assuring
me that the code of these packages are (at least somewhat) safe as
far as they are able to tell. I am thus far unable to find
information leading me to believe that there is similar assurance
that I am not willingly installing unknown malware (keystroke
logger, spyware, etc.) disguised as a desktop widget (for example)
when installing Adobe AIR applications. As a code savvy user, I can
personally download and examine the code of many AIR apps to ensure
their safety myself before installing, but what about users who
understand code as well as they understand Martian language or
ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs? Is there any assurance process in
place for the average user similar to that of native distro
packages? If so, can anyone point me to where that is discussed on
    the Adobe pages?
Also, as an aside note; root privileges are not technically
REQUIRED in order to install an RPM package in a location which the
user already has write access to, as I personally have on many
occasions installed source code packages (SRPM) from my
distribution's package manager in my home folder while logged in as
a normal user (without the use of 'su' or 'sudo' or such) for the
purpose of building newer versions of the RPM packages which they
    correspond to.

However, do note that when they are launched, AIR
applications run with the privileges of the user launching the
application and not root. The primary executables of AIR
applications (under the bin/ folder in the installation path) do
not have the setuid bit set. You should not be worried about AIR
applications running with root privileges, based on the fact that
their installation required superuser access - the two are
    completely independent.
This does still go back to the original point about the
security of the code itself which is being installed in the first
place. What quality assurance process is in place (beyond the star
ratings system on the application showcase site) to ensure that
malware was not installed (as root) and then happily being run by
all the users of a system while blissfully unaware of the capture
of their passwords or other personal information? (Again, an
example, and not the only such possible worry.) If such an
    assurance system
is already in place, where can I (and other AIR users) read
    more about it?
The reasons for this concern should be obvious when one
considers that a malicious application does not necessarily need to
be run as root to still do a great deal of damage on a system and a
sufficiently sneaky malware application could possibly even
obtain root privileges once installed on a system through
some other privilege escalation exploit. As an administrator of
multiple systems and networks, I have to be cautious about which
applications I allow on to a system or network for this very
    reason.
Please be aware that I am not making these points and asking
these questions to be a "troublemaker" or to shoot down the
achievements of the AIR team, or Adobe. To the contrary, I am very
impressed by the technology that I've seen so far and would
very much like to see AIR become and stay a genuinely useful
part of the web ecosystem on all platforms. As a matter of fact,
I'm personally reading a few different resources currently about
how to develop AIR applications in anticipation of satisfactory
answers to my few remaining concerns about AIR security worries. ;)
P.S.: If this forum was the wrong place to be discussing
these specific types of issues and concerns, please feel free to
point me toward a better place where such things should be better
covered and where like-minded individuals and groups might either
continue the discussion or resolve / close this concern entirely.
An IRC channel where AIR devs hang out maybe, or perhaps another
Adobe forum where security concerns are discussed, etc.? :)
Anyhow, sorry about the long rambling post. Thank you to
Ashutosh Sharma for your initial reply to this thread, and thank
you in advance to whoever may reply further and bring final
resolution to any remaining worries I and others may have regarding
these and similar potential security concerns. :)

  • Installing Applications Question

    new user here.
I sometimes get a "ThisApp.app" is an application downloaded from the Internet are you sure you want to open it?" /both/ when I start an app from the ThisApp.app icon in Applications (I think) and from the icon that I have Kept in the Dock. It then goes on to say "ThisApp.app is on the disk image....".
Can someone explain if this is a problem and more generally help me understand the disk image?
The deal is that I download a disk image, double click on it - and then ostensibly I am given a dialog box that gives me an opportunity to drag the app to the "Applications folder" (which I see as an image in the dialog)? After this I then eject the disk image?
Should all apps give me an opportunity to drag it the an Applications folder and if not should I do this manually?
    Thanks.

    Hi. Many thanks.
Happy to be back for a number of reasons but still a sharp learning curve.
I am inclined to keep the dmg's in a folder that has all my installed applications so that I can back this information up for future installs/re-installs.
Can I please ask you about the error in the OP however? For instance, if I d/l a dmg, double click on it, drag the App icon into the App icon folder (for instance or in some instances I guess it installs automatically and I don't get asked to do this?) - and then I open the Application -
I get an icon on the dock which in many cased I "Keep in Dock". Yes?
If I then doubleclick the icon in the dock I get the "error" I listed which is confusing to me. For instance it says something about the app being downloaded from the internet. But since I installed it and kept the icon in the dock, shouldn't mac know this is no longer an issue and just let me start the software?
Is this an error that is happening because the dmg is still in the same place (not moved or deleted) and mac /thinks/ it needs to warn me?
Will this "error" go away if I delete the dmg or otherwise move it perhaps?
It seems like an unnecessary warning...
Thanks again and yes I am liking the feeling of being back...

  • How do I not let certain users run an installed application?

I have a computer lab at a school that is running Snow Leopard and a Snow Leopard server.  Is there a way in Workgroup Manager to disallow the student group from running an installed application?  I know that I can "always allow" all the rest of the applications, but there is just one that I specifically want to disallow and I don't want to have to be constantly updating an application whitelist.

Hang an ACL off the bundle and — presuming your students are all associated with a group I'll refer to as "student" group — use the ACL to deny access to anybody in "student"?  That's sort-of and sort-of-not WGM, but it'll work.

  • TS2446 i have a problem in my account every time i want to install application from app Store on my iphone a message shows that my Apple ID has been disabled, what is the problem? what can i do ?

i have a problem in my account every time i want to install application from app Store on my iphone a message shows that my Apple ID has been disabled, i creat a new password and still that message shoes ,what is the problem ?can you help me please???!!!!

If your account is disabled then you might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
You might then need to log out of your account on your phone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on it
If that doesn't fix it then you might need to contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
