Proper Port Name Mini-DVI or Micro-DVI or Mini-DisplayPort

Hello.
I have got a new Macbook Pro but the connection for external monitors on it does not fit with my DVI connections for my old macbook pro.
What connection do I need to connect to a DVI cable coming from my monitor?
Is there a cable that works for VGA too? like a splitter from mac port connection (dunno name) to both VGA and DVI?

Hi,
Apple has introduce the Mini DisplayPort connection to the MacBook Pro with the "Late 2008" models.
Here are the various technical specifications for the MBPs through the years http://support.apple.com/specs/#macbookpro
So you need a Mini DisplyaPort to DVI adapter like this http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NTE
There also is a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1NDg
But to my knowledge no such thing a splitter to connect both at the same time to your MBP.

  • Is Mini DVI = Micro DVI??

I have an iMac (Model N.: A1224) and I want o conect it to a Samsung Plasma TV. According to the manual, this model has a video output in MINI DVI. So I have to buy a Mini DVI to DVI converter and also a DVI to HDMI converter. But at Apple Store in Brazil there are only Micro DVI to DVI converters, are they the same? Besides, isn't there a Mini-DVI to HDMI converter? Thanks a lot guys, Bruno.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
At some time or another Apple has used DVI, mini-DVI and micro-DVI ports on various models of Macs. They are not the same.
Apple only has a mini-DVI to DVI-D adapter. I use one of these with my Mac mini. And I use a Belkin DVI-D to HDMI cable. It works perfectly.
If you want a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter, there are some 3rd party manufacturers that make them. Then you could use a HDMI to HDMI cable.

  • How to connect a micro DVI display to a macbook

I want to connect a new 27" apple display to my macbook from 2008.
I can not find a mini DVI to micro DVI or thunderbold adapter. Does this exist or do I need to vonvert from mini DVI to HDMI and the to micro DVI ?
    Thanks in advance.

The FireWire cable is just for the FireWire ports on the display.  The display will run without it.

  • Micro dvi port, sound or not

can anyone tell me if the micro dvi port on my new macbook pro supports audio. I was hoping that I could plug into my hi def tv with a micro dvi to dvi adaptor, then to a dvi to hdmi lead and watch movies.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

No, DVI is Digital Video Interface, video only, no audio.
To route the audio to your TV, you need either a mini-stereo-to-RCA cable for analog audio, or if your TV has a digital audio input, you need a mini-Toslink-to-Toslink cable.

  • Apple Micro-DVI to Video Adapter New MacBook Air

    Hi All,
I am brand new to the Mac world (Been a PC user my entire life). Thought I would take a gamble on a Mac and see how it goes. So far I have been really impressed and happy!
I bought a MacBook Air a few weeks ago. It's a 2.13 GHZ MacBook Air. I would like to connect it to my "old school" standard TV which has S-Video and RCA (Yellow) inputs. I went on the Apple Store and found the Apple Micro-DVI to Video Adapter which says it is designed for a MacBook Air. Previosly though, I saw a discussion on another Mac type site that said this adapter was designed for the old MacBook Air laptops. Does anyone know if this adapter will work on my new MacBook Air? The techspecs call my MacBook Air video output a "MiniDisplay Port". Is this just a new name for Micro-DVI?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Peter

No, there is currently no adapter available to go from mini displayport to a compostie or s-video tv. Monoprice.com sells a mini displayport to hdmi cable. That's the closest there is.
    Your mba doesn't have a mini-dvi port.

  • Apple Micro-DVI to VGA Adapter for a White Macbook

When I read about the Apple Micro-DVI to VGA Adapter it talks about how it's designed for the MacBook Air and works with MacBook Pro, but will it work with a regular MacBook? My MacBook seems to have the same port necessary...

You're sure that that port does not look like that:

In this case it's a Mini DVI port

  • Micro-DVI Adapter question

I just bought a new MacBook with a Micro-DVI port. I still have several Mini-DVI adapter cables from my previous MacBook. Is there a Micro-DVI to Mini-DVI adapter so that I can buy just one adapter instead of replacing the 4 adapter cables I already have?
    -Darrell

    Yes, it will work.
DVI comes in 3 flavors: DVI-A, DVI-D, and DVI-I. DVI-A is analog-only and, in practice isn't used. DVI-D is digital-only and works with digital monitors but won't allow you to use something like a DVI-to-VGA adapter (because VGA is analog).
The Mac uses the more common DVI-I ('I' for 'integrated'), allowing it to be connected to both analog and digital DVI displays.

  • Mini-DVI doesn't fit current mini-DVI adapter??

I'm trying to do something relatively simple - connect a second flat panel display to my iMac. The problem is, the mini-DVI adapter being sold by Apple right now is a male plug, and my socket is also male. Argh!
Is there a female/female adapter that will solve this problem for me? Help!

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
The current Intel iMacs have a MiniDVI port which can use one of the following three adaptors:
    Mini DVI - DVI
    Mini DVI - VGA
    Mini DVI - Composite/S-Video.
However, the iMac G4 uses the Mini VGA port and can use these two different adaptors:
    Mini VGA - VGA
    Mini VGA - Composite/S-Video (1.0/1.25GHz only).
The iMac G4 can output Video or VGA but will only support display-mirroring (there is a firmware hack available to enable dual-display support on some iMac G4s but it is not 100% safe.)
I think you've been sold the wrong adaptor.

  • Mac mini display is flicking via HDMI to DVI adapter and DVI cable

i have received mac mini server (mid 2011) recently. mac mini is connecting the display via HDMI port using DVI cable with a HDMI to DVI adapter.
the display shows constant flicking. white dots/lines show randomly. it is like those signal noise when watching analog TV.
the same display works fine and well with macbook pro (early 2008) via DVI port.
    please help. please advise.

So you know the display is working.
It seems to me you have a few possible problems.
    1 HDMI-DVI cable is bad
    2 DVI-cable is bad
3 Connections between cables or computer or monitor are bad.
4 HDMI port on the computer is bad.
I assume you've tried #3, and re-connected cables and wiggled inputs.  So then try replacing 1 and then replacing 2 which are cheaper fixes than replacing/fixing 4.........
FYI, I'm connect my mac mini using the same setup you describe, with no issues....also inspect the cable ends carefully to look for any problems.

  • No video output from MacBook Air micro DVI to Polaroid HDTV via DVI to HDMI

Grrr! What's going on? The Apple online store finally sent me a micro DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI adapter cable as well as headphone output to RCA adapter cables (for separate audio, since DVI will not transmit audio) and I hooked it up and - NOTHING! When I initialize the appropriate input setting on the Polaroid 27"HDTV the MacBook Air seems to get some sort of query signal as its screen flickers for a moment and turns to a grey screen for a couple seconds but then, that's it! Nothing! The Polaroid's screensaver remains and no signal, audio or video, is transmitted. Now, the micro DVI to DVI adapter is Apple proprietary so I don't think it is a DRM related issue where the chip might block the video signal coming out of the MacBook Air. The longer, DVI to HDMI adapter cable is by Belkin. Am I overlooking something? Could the new 27" Polaroid HDTV not be compatible with DRM protocol? I don't think so since all digital TVs equipped with an HDMI input are supposed to have DRM compatibility built in. What gives?

Well, BSteely, where to begin? After my extensive discussions with more than one support engineer at Apple in Toronto as well as in Austin an interesting picture is emerging. Seems that I'd omitted a few things: First, I was not trying to display HD content but rather standard definition content. Second, I made the mistake hoping for an elegant and easy solution in hookup via HDMI (new flatscreens don't even have a DVI port anymore) - bad mistake! As one of the technicians put it, HDMI is an "unsettled" platform when it comes to HDCP, currently in version 1.4 , meaning, I should have tried VGA instead, a "settled" platform after all. Now, whether this will work remains to be seen because I don't have a micro DVI to VGA adapter yet but suffice to say that in essence I've been getting the message from Apple that, yes, the MacBook Air will - in the near future - support HDCP, but for now it does not contain the necessary software simply because HDMI is in its forth incarnation; plus, as they put it, Apple can't be responsible for testing compatibility with every single HD television set on the market - while it is true that there are thousands in existence, at the same time there are only four versions of HDMI with different HDCP specs! So, while I may be partially answering my own query here, it seems that Apple at this point is not particularly eager to make this software available because they rather would like to sell their new displays with the micro DVI ports instead of us endusers being able to hook the computer video signal up to just ANY monitor or TV. In the end, it is my hope that they will reconsider and not forget who their customers are, maybe after the Christmas season....

  • KVM switch one Cinema hd display (dvi) with macpro (dvi) and macbook pro (mini displayport)

I want to use a KVM switch to share one display with two computers.
Computer one is: MacPro 1,1 dual core 2.66 Ghz with two DVI ports.
Computer two is: MacBook Pro 4 core 2.66 GHz with one Mini Displayport.
Display is: Cinema HD Display with DVI connector.
To do that KVM switches only use (at least that is waht I found) one system either DVI or Mini Displayports
    http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=3113
    DVI --> KVM SWITCH<-- DVI
                         V
                   DVI (monitor)
    http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-2x1-Mini-DisplayPort-KVM-Switch.html
Mini Displayport (Macpro) --> KVM SWITCH <-- Mini Displayport (Macbookpro)
                                                             V
                                                     DVI (monitor)
    However what I want is:
DVI (Macpro) --> KVM SWITHCH<-- Mini Displayport (Macbookpro)
                                           V
                                  DVI(monitor)
I couldn't find an existing KVM switcher that does this.
Then there is the following solution
DVI (Macpro) --> KVM SWITCH <-- ADAPTER (Mini Displayport to DVI) <-- Mini Displayport (Macbookpro)
                                        V
                                DVI(monitor)
The question is: Will this work?
I've been told that adapter behind adapter never works. Hope someone can help with this before spending money on nothing.
    Thanx David

Maybe you're right just try and see if I can return the stuff if it's not working.
I won't be using a higher resolution then 1920 x 1200 however I still would buy the adapter
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng
for connecting macbookpro to KVM DVI switch.
However if there's still someone with experiencing the exact same thing I would be much obliged.

  • What do i need to hook up 2 dvi monitors to a mac mini

what cable do i need to hook up a second dvi monitors to a mac mini

    XLR8off wrote:
I think I figured it out... use the HDMI to DVI (supplied) and get a Mini Display to DVI cable for the second monitor...?
You are correct. Get the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter, in addition to using the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter.
Mini Displayport is physically identical to the Thunderbolt, and a video signal (for one monitor) can be passed through the Thunderbolt port.
Also note the max. resolutions under "video support" on Mini's tech specs:
Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution
That may determine which of your monitors you hook up to which port. Also don't go nuts with monitors, the mini might not be able to drive them to their max resolutions.

  • Newbie Question, MacBook Air with Micro DVI to 24" Cinema display, possible

  • MBA micro-DVI - iMac display

I have been looking into the possibility of displaying my MacBook Air on my iMac screen. My MBA's screen is a little broken and being the early 2008 release (probably the one Jobbs pulled from the manilla envelope!) I don't want to pay so much to get it fixed. The keyboard's fine, but I really have come accustomed to my 2011 iMac 27" display and wanted to see all of the keystrokes made on my MBA on my iMac.
Of course the new machines simply use a Thunderbolt cable to get the job done, but it's never that easy is it when you don't have the money. So, I'm stuck with a micro-DVI slot, the converter cable that takes it to DVI and I think, from there I could use a converter again into Thunderbolt to get the job done, so, would that work please?

I had since found out that my early 2008 13" MacBook Air offered the unique connection of micro-DVI, which came with a converter to DVI. I then found a DVI to DisplayPort adapter which would fit the Thunderbolt port on my late 2011 27" iMac and while everything fit, it did not work.
I think it's because anything later than 2009 for iMac's (specifically of a 27" variety) would not support anything by DisplayPort input, so I was out of luck. It was a tumultuous time for video connections, easy now of course as it's been settled with Thunderbolt, but those years saw several changes and ultimately a trail of incompatibilities.
Still, there was a generation difference between the two and in the computing world that makes a big difference.
