Proper SFP module for use

Hello,
I have a 15' optical handoff run from our ISP Flashwave to a 3845.  We need an SFP capable of handling 1310nm single-mode transmission, but the GLC-EX-SMD has far more power than we'd need.  I'm thinking a lower-powered SFP that still meets the transmission criteria would be less expensive and wouldn't require a 5dB attenuator.
I can't find another suitable option, can anyone suggest something different?  And if not, perhaps a link to optical attenuators that would work well with the GLC-EX-SMD?
Thanks in advance!

You're welcome and thanks for the rating.
Actually Cisco refers to it both ways (1300 and 1310). Please see Table 4 in this document (and contrast with Table 1).
The GLC-LH-SM/D is very commonly used in just this application - metro Ethernet and service provider type of handoffs.
You may also want to take a look a the excellent document on this forum that Tom has put together. I keep it bookmarked.

  • Proper drive modules for a G5 Xserve?

    Hi all,
We need up upgrade the drive modules in a G5 Xserve. I checked in the apple store, and the 750 GB SATA modules have this line:
"These Serial ATA Apple Drive Modules are qualified for use only with the new Intel-based Xserve. For Xserve RAID or older Xserve (G4 based) products, use the Apple Drive Module with Ultra ATA (parallel) support only. For Xserve G5 systems, use the previous generation Serial ATA drive modules."
The problem is, I don't see this "previous generation Serial ATA drive modules" anywhere. Similarly, the Ultra ATA drives have this line:
"These Ultra ATA drives are qualified for use with Xserve RAID only. For Xserve G5 or Intel-based products, use the Apple Drive Module with Serial ATA only. "
My question is, what drive modules should I be using?!
Also, does anyone think Apple will be coming out with 1 TB modules in the near future, and if so, what are the odds of compatibility with the G5 Xserves?

    Hey guys,
A heads up.. I've had 4 flavors of SATA ADM:
    1. 80GB SATA Hitachi (xserve g5 gen)
    2. 80GB SATA Seagate (intel gen)
    3. 250GB SATA (xserve g5 gen)
    4. 750GB SATA (intel g5 gen)
Needless to say, all 4 work in either the xserve g5 or intel, and either can boot as long as the partioning is setup appropriately (guid or apple). With that said, there actually is a GB size difference between the 2 80GB models, which does make life complicated if you have an only xserve g5 and want to get a new 80GB to make a raid 1 (either the solution is to look for an older model on ebay or to wipe both drives).

  • Creating Plugin Modules for Use with Compiled Code

    Hi all,
While programing a data analysis package in Labview, I've run into a problem that I don't really know how to answer.  It goes something like this: my program receives data from measurement devices in the form of ASCII or binary files, which I must then process and evaluate.  The problem is, the data files can have a variety of different formats.  Right now, I only know of 4 or 5, but more could literally be added at any time.
My thought is this: I'd love to have some sort of modular plugins for reading the data files.  In other words, I could have a subfolder under my application's space in the "Program Files" directory.  The subfolder would contain any number of "ReadFileX.xxx" modules.  Upon initiation, my code would scan that folder, determine the possible formats (based on the *.xxx files therein), and be capable of reading any of the files.  Ideally, the user would select a file, I would note its format, and call the appropriate plugin module to handle reading the data into my code.
What is the best approach for doing something like this?  I looked (briefly) into using DLL's, but (from what I can tell) I would need to explicitly define the function name and the inputs / outputs in the "Call Library Node" function.  This would appear the break the modularity feature, as I want to be able to load the software, and then develop new plugins down the road when the need arises.  I also found some information on source distributions (in an LLB).  This option would probably work, but my efforts at coding a basic test of VI-Server were met with errors.
Does anyone have any experience performing a similar task?  If so, would you share your knowledge / secrets with me?  I would be extremely grateful for your feedback.
    Thanks!
    Mark

Mark - there is a Coding Challenge currently going on, and I have submitted an entry that shows how to dynamically instantiate a class based on a class that resides on disk. Specifically, you're going to be interested in "Get LV Class Default Value.vi" under the "Cluster, Class, and Variant" palette that allows you to create an instance of an object based on the path of the .lvclass file. The class you load is going to be what's called a child class of a parent class (or base class), where the child class implementation overrides the function of the parent class. The "Get LV Class Default Value.vi" is very loosely analogous a Class Constructor.
You can deploy your application having implemented all the base class functions, then subsequently develop and deploy new classes to reside in a "plugins" folder without needing to change the original app code.
If you find that contest entry helpful, consider dropping a vote, huh? The LabVIEW Communities have had access errors sporadically the past few weeks, so if you get a "Server Error" you may need to try again later. There's also going to be Forums maintenance today and tomorrow.

  • Cisco 2960S-24TS-S using SFP modules between switches

I am using Cisco 2960S-24TS-S using SFP modules for two different speed requirements, I have two SFP ports using 100Mbit modules and the other two SFP ports using 1000Mbit modules.
I have two Cisco 2960S-24TS-S switches connected together via a fiber optic cable, and each SFP module is on port 28, with a 1000 Mbit SFP module in each, and the two switches will not connect. The fiber was checked with a light tester not a db kit.
Do I need to have SFP port specific setup details in a configuration file for the Cisco Switch or does the SFP module handle this?
" interface GigabitEthernet1/0/28" - set up in config file for the port. Does this need to dictate "interface 100" or "1000MbitEthernet1/0/28" instead?

The ports should auto-negotiate speed you should not need to hard code them to get them to come up , Are the ports showing up/down or down/down can you post the show interface for each side and the show run int x/x for each port

  • FAS2554 UTA2 Ports SFP+ Module requirement

Hello, Have anyone know the Netapp FAS2554 UTA2 Ports have any specific requirement for the SFP+ module?(I means if I purchase one other brand SFP+ moudule, it is possible to comptiable with UTA2 ports?) Thanks in advanced!

Hi, From Hardware universe : The onboard UTA2 ports can be configured as FC Target/Initiator or CNA (FCoE target/Ethernet). The UTA2 ports are based on a dual port ASIC and both ports on each ASIC must be set to the same mode (enforced by Data ONTAP). Install X6589-R6 10GbE SFP+ modules or approved copper twinax cables when using in CNA (FCoE target/Ethernet) mode. Install X6596-R6 16Gb FC SFP+ module when using in FC Target/Initiator mode.  Thanks

  • Disabled GBIC SFP module

I have 2 WS-3750-48PS switches in a stack, i have today installed 2 x MGBSX1 sfp's to link new fibre to other building on the grounds.
I have now got 2 types of error messages showing :-
    EVENT NOTIFICATION -
Description: Gi1/0/3: This port has been disabled because Non Compliant  Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) connector detected.
Recommendation: Replace connector with cisco compliant Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) connector. Refer switch technical documentation to determine cisco compliant connector. Enable the port again.
    SYSTEM MESSAGES
unfortunately i haven't got the full message but it was saying thet there was a CRC error in the EEPROM and that maybe a software update would rectify the problem.
The stack is running 12.2(35)SE5-IP-BASE software at the moment and i have seen on a Cisco page that ALL cwdm sfp's are compatible with my switches (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4999/products_tech_note09186a00807a30d6.shtml#support3)
Should i upgrade the software to 12.2.55-SE3 ?

The reason for the Non Compliant error message is that the MGBSX1 sfp is not a "compatible" product with the WS-3750-48PS switch, per the following compatibility document:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6981.html#wp137837
According to the document you referenced, the following statement may be the reason you are receiving CRC errors on the port.
    "Use Third Party SFP Modules
The use of third party SFP transceivers with Cisco devices is not supported by Cisco. Cisco-approved SFP modules have a serial EEPROM that contains the module serial number, the vendor name and ID, a unique security code, and cyclic redundancy check (CRC). When an SFP module is inserted in the switch, the switch software reads the EEPROM to verify the serial number, vendor name and vendor ID, and recomputes the security code and CRC. If the serial number, the vendor name or vendor ID, the security code, or CRC is invalid, the software generates this security error message and places the interface in an error-disabled state."

  • SG500 5Gb SFP module

    Hello,
I was wondering what fibre SFP module I use to stack SG500 switches at 5Gb.
In the datasheet it says SFP-10G-SR can be used for 10Gb stacks with SG500X switches but doesnt say if it can or can't be used on the SG500.
I am using mulitmode fibre and the distance is less than 200m.
    Thanks.

Hi David, yes you are right I have neglected the fact it is twinax. It is also correct about fiber. The problem will remain an actual distance.
The copper modules will work perfectly fine for the 5 gig slots up to the available wire length. A 1 gig fiber module such as MGBSX1 would be a suitable 550 meter or less multi mode solution if the distance does exceed the length of the copper or ethernet.
However, what is not clear is a factual distance. Less than 200 meters is ambiguous and there are 3 correct answers. If this is within 30 feet let's say then the 5 gig is by far an exceptional choice. If it will be outside of the 30 feet then another solution such as a multimode fiber using MGBSX1 will do the trick for a 1 gig link for 550 meters. Also running regular Cat6 can also do this trick for less than 100 meter. Or for a different approach, MGBT1 using Cat6 which is an ethernet module.
It is just a matter of having all information since the ONLY distance mentioned is less than 200 meter. Perhaps I could do better and first ask "How far are you truthfully going"? or "Here's 3 options..."

  • Help about SFP module

    Hi all,
I bought two Cisco 3560X-24T switches, both wit network module and SFP module for fiber connection.
During the power on process all the light of the network module are on, so this should means that the module is operating.
I've no alarm on led and no alarm on web console.
I can see the SFP module on console (web and telnet) and I can enable or disable it correctly, and from log I can see that the module is detected properly (100Mb) and the port is auto configuring.
Now the problem, after connecting the fiber patch both switch show that the link is down. So I tried to change the patch but same results. So after I looked at SFP (I've 4 for each switch) and none of the 8 SFP is emitting light.
    Do you've any suggestion?
Many thanks in advance to all that will answer.
    Kind regards

Can you post the output from 'show inventory'?

  • DWDM SFP modules - where to use?

Hi, we are considering to interconnect two sites using DWDM. What type (colored, non-colored 1310) SFP modules should we use on our switches connecting to multiplexer/OADM? Does it depend on the actual MUX device?

DWDM multiplexers and OADM filters have wavelength specific ports, that are connected to an optical transceiver of the same wavelength.  Below is a link to the Cisco DWDM pluggable optical transceivers,

  • Developing adapter modules for PI 7.0 using NWDS 7.3

    Hello all,
Did someone have already developed adapter modules for PI 7.0 using NWDS 7.3? I can´t find the EJB libraries for Java 1.4.
I'm able to develop mapping programs, but I'm not sure if it is possible to create EJB projects.
    Thanks,
    Marcos

    Hi Marcos,
I haven't tried developing adapter modules in NWDS 7.3 for PI 7.0 myself, but according to the documentation from SAP it is possible to develop J2EE 1.4 compliant applications i.e. EJB 2.1 components, which is used by SAP PI 7.0.
Because of this backwards-compatibility I would expect that the EJB libraries for J2EE 1.4 should be available directly in NWDS 7.3 somewhere.
    Best regards,
    Jacob
