Proper Surround in Windows

Hey board people,
I'm currently having an issue regarding surround sound in Windows x64 Professional. If anyone is interested in a little backstory which may or may not shed some more light on the subject, it's included below this paragraph - otherwise, please skip directly to the bottom. I apologize if I am re-asking old questions but I've been unable to find a definiti've answer or solution to my problem.
Here's the backstory. I recently purchased a completely new system, excluding a sound card and sound system which was the "Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS" and the "Cambridge SoundWorks DeskTop Theater 5. DTT3500 Digital". As I've purchased a 64-bit based CPU I decided to install Windows x64 Professional on my system. Unfortunately - I did not have any luck getting the system to properly produce surround sound. I could get sound out of the rear speakers by setting the CMSS 3D to "Stereo Surround", but actual speaker tests always resulted in the front speakers acting as rear speakers. Meaning that both phrases "front left" and "rear left" would come from the front left speaker. Additionally I experienced smaller sound irregularities as well as newer games not utilizing EAX properly although supposedly EAX 4 is supported by the "Audigy 2 ZS". After a long and unfortunately fruitless discussion with the Creative support team, I chose to purchase some new hardware. Please note here that I bare no ill will towards the creative support team, but I am of course sad that the issue could not be solved.
Anyway... Thinking that this is perhaps a hardware issue as the "Audigy 2" is quite dated - I proceed to upgrade it. I purchase a "Sound Blaster X-Fi? Fatalty" and the "Logitech Z-5500" sound system. Aside from fixing the sound irregularities and presumably fixing the EAX support (haven't tested that yet) - I am still unable to properly utilize Surround Sound. I am beginning to suspect this is a Windows x64 / Creative Driver related issue. Everything is the same as before, I can utilize the rear speakers when up-mixing sound, but any and all actual tests using Creative software plays the rear channels through the front speakers...
Back story done. The obvious question (for those who have read the backstory) is, has anyone successfully utilized Surround Sound in Windows Professional x64 Edition. And if so, how? I can only utilize them when upmixing sound with CMSS 3D to "Stereo Surround" - not in any real games
Thanks in advance,
Gazoo

Hi Gazoo,
The answer is........... yes and no!
When you say you don't have surround sound, do you actually mean in any specific games/apps? I too, have got XP64 installed, running an X-Fi Fatalty and also connected to the Cambridge SoundWorks DTT3500.
When I install the O/S from fresh and put the X-Fi drivers on there, I always select the 2. option (digital only, iirc). If you do a test from the X-Fi utilities - sure enough, you hear sound from the front speakers, but nothing from the rear ones.
However, this is decepti've. When you run a game that will support surround sound such as Quake 4, BF2, Civ IV, etc - the surround sound <EM>will </EM>be there. Stick your head next to the rear speaker, if you don't believe me.
It is frustrating - it took me ages of trying out loads of options to work this one out. However, I've noticed that you need the latest X-Fi driver for it to work properly with XP64. If you use the standard one off the installation CD, you get a whole host of issues.
Hope this hel
ps.
All I need to do now is to find out how to use the X-Fi Fatalty with the RC version of Vista 64. What a pain in the ricker that is proving to be!
D.

  • What is the PROPER plugin for Windows Media Player 12 - Prompt leads to WMP 11

Is the plugin for WMP 11 the proper plugin for the WMP 12 64 bit system?
Is this WMP 11 plugin the version of the plugin itself or for WMP Version 11?
One web cam I tried to view said it needed this plugin, it wouldn't download; said to do it manually. When I tried it listed the Windows systems w/bit system information and Windows XP SP2 (x86)
    Windows XP SP2 (x64)
    Windows Vista (x86)
    Windows Vista (x64)
There is nothing offered for Windows 7 at all, much less for this 64 bit system as it does for the two above systems. This is very unclear, and with so many problems posted all over the Internet.... and having lost graphic card ability and later memory burn out on last computer due to this same issue in Vista, I would really appreciate the proper plugin information relating to this issue so I can safely use my computer.
Who creates the plugins?T Firefox or Microsoft? How can this problem go on for so many years unresolved? Thanks for your insight.

You need a 32 bit Windows Media Player and a 32 bit plugin for it.<br />
I don't think that the WMP plugin will work with a 64 bit WMP version.<br />
Firefox is 32 bit as well.
The WMP plugin that you found works with WMP 12.

  • Proper Fix for Windows 7 Desktop Gadgets not Displaying Correctly

This is not a question, this is an answer to a common problem with an easy solution.
DO NOT delete the registry subkey "Zones" the proper method to restore your gadgets is much simpler.
    Here is the proper fix:
    Right-Click Taskbar > Task Manager
    Right-Click sidebar.exe > End Process
    Start > Run (Windows Key + R)
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\
Delete the Settings.ini file in this folder.
(If you do not have extensions showing it will just read "Settings" in the [Name] column with "Configuration settings" in the [Type] column)
    Right-Click Desktop > Gadgets
Place your gadgets on your desktop.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your sharing.
You may refer to the following KB to check the issue:
Windows 7 gadgets may not work or be displayed correctly
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2515657
    Thanks again.
There is some great information, however it doesn't include the fix I mentioned. That's the whole reason I mentioned it. Referring to the KB does nothing, instead of providing autonomous replies try reading the title and content.

  • X-Fi SB 1090 USB - No 5.1 Surround Sound - Windows 7

    Hardware: X-Fi SB090 USB 5.1 soundcard.
Operating Systems: Windows 7 Professional Edition
Notebook computer: Dell Latitude D620 w/ 2GB RAM
    Latest Drivers installed including Beta.
Recei'ver: Denon AVR 60 connected via, Toslink (optical). Recei'ver is set to Auto. Other options : PCM or DTS.
Setting the Entertainment console to 5.1 Speakers, only Main Left and Right channel can be heard. Rest of the channels are inaudible.
The last time I tested was when the Laptop was running Windows XP OS and used my old Marantz SR 680 Receiver which was just Dolby Digital.
    Any suggestions or ideas?

I am playing DVDs and MP4 or AVI that has 6 channel audio. I am decoding the audio with my Denon AVR Recei'ver. The Denon Recei'ver decodes DVDs played on my BD player via, HDMI.
If I play DVDs from my Optoma DV-0 Projector, the Decoder via the same Toshlink - Optical link works and proper 5.1 channel decoding occurs.
It looks like this is a Windows 7 drivers for the Unit.

  • How can I get my files back in their proper folders in Windows Explorer?

For over 10 years I have meticulously put my photos in folders according to month, event.  So a folder is in directory labeled 2013, with
I've successfully used Adobe Bridge to browse, edit, final edit in Photoshop.
Now I use Lightroom and everything is put into a Lightroom Catalog with weird numbers on the folders and all my pictures have vanished from my carefully created folders on Windows Explorer?
How do I put the pictures back to where they were - short of going to my backup files.
Also since using Lightroom, Photoshop is hanging saying it is waiting for Network I/O threads - so I cannot save (on my own disk - why Photoshop CC should look at the network for every task beats me - I had about 5 threads waiting on the network).
All I'm trying to do is find my best 12 pictures from 2013 to make a Christmas letter and I've already spent a whole evening trying to get this to work.
Is this how Lightroom works, or is it a terrible bug, or is there an option to not move the original files when making a Lightroom catalog?
I am a single user, so don't need sharing, network, workflow.
I only want Lightroom to Point to my files, not to move them.  Maybe I should go back to Bridge?

I discovered a wonderful blog that explained:
Lightroom is a database and it holds the pictures
Bridge is a browser that browses files on the disk
I'm getting used to Lightroom, even though I have many pictures because I organize them and only look at recent ones, it does seem that Bridge is better for me - so I am not locked into Adobe's database.
All is clear now - except Photoshop is hanging a bit - maybe graphics driver or memory problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it seems to time out.

  • I have 64bit windows and install proper one for windows and get error saying wron i tunes and to reinstall the right one

i cant get itunes to install also get error after 1 use that itunes does not work again

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if AAS won't install normally.

  • Proper installation on Windows 2003 - SQL Server - SSIS Package

We are attempting to access an Oracle 10g database from a SQL Server 2005 installation through SSIS (Windows 2003 x64). Our admin has installed the Oracle 11g client tools, we are developing in VS2008 (on XP x86). We seem to be connecting to the server through VS, but when running the package on the server we get errors as follows:

We suspect the issue is in the initial installation steps. (BTW - we used a TNSNAMES.ORA that worked on our local machines.)
    Can anyone help?

The errors you are showing are Microsoft errors not Oracle errors. You should take this up with Microsoft support.

  • Is it even possible to edit surround sound on a Mac Pro?!?!?!

    Hello,
I've just been reading this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2924869?
Which among many things discusses the fact that Mac Pros, even through an optical cable, are not capable of exporting live 5.1 audio - they can only playback already encoded 5.1 dolby audio from DVD's for example. Apparently the optical out is a purely stereo affair otherwise. I've finally received my Logitech 5450 speakers (took weeks and weeks) and hooked them up. They can indeed playback 5.1 from a DVD, which is splendid. However, one of the things I was most looking forward to was working on surround mixes in Soundtrack Pro. However, firstly STP doesn't want to convert stereo files into surround (like the video online showed), but only means that the surround panner pans between the two front speakers. (I know there's another thread about that, but the proposed solution of adjusting the collapse slider does nothing).
Secondly, and perhaps more confusingly, if I load an actual 5.1 file from the STP content, it still doesn't play in proper surround - the centre speaker kind of works and I think something's rumbling through the subwoofer, but both of the left speakers and right speakers are 'compressed' into the front one alone - nothing comes out of the rear speakers (they are perfectly connected I assure you!). In other words, f I move the puck in the surround panner so it's solely on the front right, and then over to the rear right, it's exactly the same (coming out the front).
I'm sure there must be a solution. Why would Apple advertise the ease with which one can now mix surround if the Mac Pro (I'm not exactly talking about a mac mini here) cannot export live 5.1?
Something which I'm sure is related, but which I can't solve, is that if I go into Audio MIDI setup in Utilities, and try and 'Configure Speakers', only two channels are recognised, and it won't let me select any of the multichannel options (such as 5.1, which is greyed out.)
Anyone know what I'm going on about? I'm totally lost - not really an audio person in general, but hoping to enrich my short films with some surround magic.
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Steve
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Typically 5.1 is mixed, and monitored on a 5.1 monitoring system, which means you need an audio interface and setup capable of outputting six channels of audio.
So of course the Mac Pro is capable, but not without additional multi-channel playback and monitoring hardware.
Encoded surround sound, which you hear on playback from things like a DVD, is entirely different story and the encoding is done at the end of the mixing/mastering process. Sometimes you will encode a mix in a variety of formats, Dolby Pro Logic, DTS etc.

  • There must be a real solution to "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
I've spent hours researching this error - Seems like many people have the same issue although there is no difinitive fix or known cause.
I'm hoping someone here has an answer.
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM (HP)
This is not an upgraded Vista system.
It's not a specific driver related issue as it's the same response/effect be it graphics/chip set/usb/printer drivers.
Please dont suggest to flatten and re-install or run a repair install - It's not an option, I only have remote access to the unit
as it's currently in field use.
This is a machine specific issue - identical machine purchased at the same time and configured the same has no issue.
    So the story.
User has been fine for weeks - no hardware of software changes except Windows Updates.
A Camera/USB connection that was working no longer does.
    Tried in all USB ports
Plug in - windows announces found new hardware, tries to install drivers then fails
with "Windows found software for your device but encountered an error installing ...."
Device manager finds and identifies device although it is in the 'Unknown Device" category.
Manually updating drivers via search/internet or point directly at a driver has exactly the same effect.
Thinking this was just the camera drivers - I researched and downloaded new drivers from camera manufacturers sites
    Fuji and Canon.
    Same effect.
Deleted/uninstalled drivers completely, deleted/uninstalled all USB root hub and USB devices (hidden and visible)
    SFC /Scannow finds no error
Cold boot finds USB and chipset(?) devices on boot attempts to reinstall then we get
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
So now I have no usb devices at all - memory stick/card reader/printer...... nada.
in fact if I try to update any device driver I get the same message generated.
Restore point does not help either.
After much trawling I found reference to a permisions issue and stale driver cache data.
(This is using an administrator account - not user with admin permissions?)
I'm willing to try anything at this time
I deleted the infcache.1 and other .dat files under c:\windows\system32\driverstore
Copied the usb  .inf and .pnf from the appropriate FileRepository directory into c:\windows\inf
Uninstalled all the usb/unkown devices from device manager again.
    Rebooted
Takes a little longer to boot as I take it it's rebuilding the driver cache then
    a very short hurrah!!!
I can now use usb memory card and pen drives - no issue
Plug in a camera or printer...
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
Several attempt at this trying different driver versions.
It should not be vendor specific, the other field machine that works is using Microsoft drivers for these devices.
I even copied the drivers from one machine to the other - repeated everything above...
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
And then the nail in my sanity
    Try windows update....
    Reboot
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
    but this time its different.
The device it thinks it cannot install is the generic MTP-PTP drivers  (Photo Transfer Protocol -so am I getting somewhere)
so it still finds but cannot install.
The cameras are always found but appear as 'unknown devices' and cannot be accessed
Uninstall all USB/unkown again - reboot..
Same message and this time I've lost all the USB again.
Restore point to before Win Update gets me USB back again although I still have no cameras  - so theres an update issue as well.
This has to be tied down to a file access/ registry problem although I'm loath to go cutting about without some guidance.
I'm no great believer in 'registry cleaners' unless anyone can point to a definitive/no ad's/sales version that really works.
As I said above, flattening/rebuild at this time is not an option - the user is not best pleased and I'm completley stumped.
If anyone has experienced(manu of you have) and fixed(still to find one) this issue please let me know how as soon as possible.
    Chris

I know I am replying to an old thread - but I have the answer and resolved this error, and since this message comes up first in search results, and part of my answer came from this thread, I wanted to help someone else as this took an extra
12 hours and a lot of technical insight to resolve. See below for detailed explanation that others ask for above.
My original issue was that iTunes didnt reinstall. generating this error that said I am trying to access an unavailable network resource and to browse to find itunes64setup (again). This may partly have been due to me deleting old install version folders.
Research led me to completely uninstall apple products and reinstall per their instruction and fixed the issue with iTunes. see
Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support
The SAME error I had while updating itunes recurred while uninstalling it from my Windows 7 SP1 system...so I went to microsoft Fixit and attempted to correct and it properly uninstalled iTunes for me, which allowed the reinstall.
What didnt work was my USB web root/ root hub, which partly involved my older system and USB 1.0, and the delete/reinstall existing drivers with the c:\windows\winsxs folder as source of drivers (thank you Magon Liu!!!) which I had to figure out what/why
    and how.
Then I had an intel chipset issue...my new Iphone wasn't recognizing in plug and play, and there was an error with installing the device drivers for my new iphone 6. Manual applications didn't work, even though a generic device showed in control panel -
device manager with a yellow !
Per above blog answer - I tried to remove and reinstall my USB controller or update the drivers (I have an Alienware M15 laptop - a few years old.) I discovered that the USB host controller - an Intel(R) 5 Series / 3400 Series Chipset family USB Enhanced
Host controller - (port) was not covered by current Intel chipset programs which are Series 6 and later, but did have an update (8/20/2009 v9.1.1.1020)  that supported USB 2.0 (and therefore 3.0 backwards compatibility which as an issue with my new iPhone
and some USB thumb drives.) To find this I had to look at the Support - Downloads and Drivers - browse for drivers and somewhere found an option to look for older no longer supported drivers. I found infinst_autol.exe for my case.
Once downloaded I tried to install and failed. Found the log in C:\Intel\Logs and contains:
    [InstallDev]
              [Device]
                Driver = C:\Users\DAVIDS~1\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7\ibexusb.inf
                INF = C:\Users\DAVIDS~1\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7\ibexusb.inf

                Using RegDeleteKeyEx
!!!         ERROR 0xE0000246: DriverPackageInstall generated an unexpected error
HERE'S THE ADDED EXPLANATION TO BRIAN'S POST THAT EXPLAINS THE SECURITY ISSUE:
This turned out to be an error for two reasons. First, after manually running the command in an "run as administrator" window (same error result), thinking it related to my anti-virus (turned that off/disabled firewall and A/V), and from this thread
granting my user administrative rights to files in an install folder and trying to reinstall inf files and drivers from C:\Windows\winsxs vs my copied infinst_autol.exe expansion (as found from log in C:\Users\David Samuels\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7 folder).....that
there was an easier solution as the reason this error actually happens is a permissions problem.
To access the proper windows system folders - you have to be the TrustedInstaller service - not just in the administrator group...or you have to be the actual "Administrator" account. To become actual administrator on
your own laptop, Open a command window "run CMD.exe as administrator", then execute command
    > net user administrator /active:yes
This creates a local PC Administrator account with no password. Coincidentally it has proper permissions to windows directories for installing drivers. Log in as this user, go to device manager and update the USB hub and any other drivers. if updating the
USB root - it doesn't replace it right away as the system cant disable the currently resident in memory "running" driver  - you have to update, then restart the system, log in as administrator and repeat at the next lower layer that has issues.
Once completed - log in as yourself again and disable the administrator account in a command window with > net user administrator /active:no
This in my case enabled all my USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices on my originally only USB 1.0 laptop and everything else works properly again - I hope this helps many of you to resolve your own issues that were difficult to find and resolve and that got as far as
    this thread. Good luck!

i have problem in Display Brightness i am not able to change Brightness by function key or by manually from windows settings.
    2. my Function key are not working properly . all key are fliped whiout holding function key it work as function key. 3. bluetooth is not working when i search for new device not able to find any available discouable bluetooth device. 4. wireless button software is not wokring in windows 7 i already updated my bios that available in drivers support and install alll drivers too properly so please give proper drivers for windows 7 for this product that works perfect.

Sorry that driver didn't work. You can try this graphics driver and if that doesn't work, unfortunately, I won't be able to help you with that issue. This package provides the AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. For notebooks with switchable graphics modes, this package includes drivers for both graphics processing units (GPUs). Switchable graphics enable users to switch between a power-saving graphics mode (normally used under battery power) and a high-performance graphics mode. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. File name: sp71253.exe As far as the Fn keys being 'flipped,' I have no idea what you mean by that, or what to do about it. Did you install the software that controls the funtion keys? This package contains the HP System Event Utility, which enables special function keys on supported notebook models to be programmed. For example, HP System Event Utility enables users to press the Fn+ESC keys to view system information. This software works with the supported operating systems. File name: sp71156.exe

  • Just bought a new PC with Windows 7 installed on it. I'm having trouble Adding my Lexmark Optra S 1625 Printer ( no drivers found )?

I have contacted Lexmark and they claim that the OS has a compatable driver included.   But, so far I have NOT been successful at adding the printer.   The Optra S 1625 is currently shared by one of my XP PC's on my network.   My new, Windows 7 PC, is finding the printer just fine, but is not able to locate an acceptalbe driver for it.   Perhaps, I am just not familiar enough yet with how to work with Windows 7 to get around the issue.   I need some help.   Lexmark claims that Windows 7 should have a compatable driver included with the OS ???  Please Advise.

    Hi Fidmon,
After performing a research, I just get the same conclusion as Rick Dee and Shadow Walker. There is no Lexmark Optra S 1625 Printer driver for Windows 7 provided on Windows Update Catalog. Also, no driver downloading information for your printer listed on the Lexmark Product Download Center.
At this time, you can try the suggestions raised by Shadow Walker to install the similar printer driver to check the issue. For your convenicen, I have located a driver for OPTRA S 1255 printer. Please download and install the driver to test the issue.
Please note: Since this is a Windows XP driver, I can't guarantee if it works for you, but we can try installing the driver under Windows XP Compatible Mode.
    OPTRA S 1255
If the driver did not work, I strongly suggest communicating with Lexmark Support and ask them to produce the proper driver for Windows 7.
    Judy :)

  • Dual Boot Arch and Windows 8 from Windows Boot

I tried doing some research before posting but haven't had too much luck. I just upgraded to Windows 8, but after having a nice experience with Arch previously on VirtualBox, I thought I would dual boot this time... and this is my first post.
I followed the Beginners Installation Guide and the Win Arch Dual Boot and then did some reading on setting up the BCD manager in Windows following from the link in the Arch Wiki.
    My setup is as follows
    /dev/sda1 = Windows (>150 GB)
    /dev/sda2 = /boot (100 MB)
    /dev/sda3 = / (15 GB)
    /dev/sda5 = /var (8 GB)
    /dev/sda6 = /home (~65 GB)
The linux portions are all ext4, but after reading the above article on the BCD Manager, I realized I left out the FAT32 partition so Windows can see it (note... if I get this to work, I will try and update the wiki to mention that).
So the problem is I used up all my hard drive space and need to make room for the FAT32 section. I was wondering
    a) how to resize the /home partition to make room for the FAT32 partition
    or
b)if I were to delete the /home entirely and just add an sda4 (FAT32) and sda6 (/home) (since I forgot to use sda4), do I need to go through the pacstrap process again, or generate an fstab again, or just edit the fstab manually?
    or
    c) there is a possibility that I missed something where I shouldn't need to have an FAT32 section.
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks for the help!
I was able to use GParted to add that extra partition and was able to generate the proper file for Windows to see, and then copy over to the C: drive (which is what's missing from the Wiki).
I unfortunately had some issues that kept me starting in emergency mode, so after some time spent in the fstab section and setting the right filesystems, I was able to get it to work!

  • Very strange hard disk problem - Boot Camp/Windows related?

On my first gen 1.83 GHz MacBook Pro (now at 10.5.2 with all System Updates applied), I've had Win XP Home installed under Boot Camp (from the very first beta, updated to the release Boot Camp assistant now) for well over a year. At one time about 14 months ago I tried using Parallels, but that used too much battery power, so I deleted Parallels. I don't know whether that left any traces of itself behind.
More recently I've been amazed at how well VMWare Fusion works on my Mac Pro, so I decided to try it on my laptop. I installed the Fusion application and tried to "adopt" my Boot Camp partition installation of Win XP. I think I goofed and didn't install VMWare tools at the proper moment, because Windows went on a self-directed hunt for drivers after installation, and when I tried to start the virtual machine inside Fusion, Windows told me it needed to be activated by Microsoft and wouldn't even allow me to log in to do the activation.
Wondering whether there might be some residual of the Parallels "hooks" to Windows contaminating things, I decided just to reinstall Windows.
I used Boot Camp Assistant to remove the Windows partition. The first clue that something was now amiss was that I decided to reboot the laptop after reclaiming the Windows partition, and when I did so I encountered a black screen with a decidedly "microsoft pre-start up" text message on my screen, something like "press any key to start up from the removable media drive", then "press any key to start up", neither of which would work (even with a bootable disk in the optical drive).
So, I rebooted holding down the option key and was able to start up Mac OS X 10.5.2. Only one volume was shown now in "About this Mac" and on my desktop, so I ran Boot Camp Assistant again to re-create a Boot Camp partition. UNFORTUNATELY, in the midst of this, I encountered my first ever kernal panic ("windowshade" effect descending down the screen and multiple-language dialog telling me I needed to reboot).
I rebooted and ran Disk Utility, which told me my partition map was wrong and that I was missing about the amount of disk space I'd allocated to Windows in my previous Boot Camp partition. I thought at THAT point I'd solved my problem - I could just run disk utility from my Leopard startup disk. HOWEVER, the Leopard installation disk will no longer reboot the laptop!
I confirmed that the problem is not the Leopard installation DVD, because it will boot my Mac Pro and it mounts on the desktop and Disk Utility says it's fine.
So, I tried to repair my laptop's drive using DiskWarrior 4. That worked (at least it made a new directory, and after it did so, when I boot into the Mac OS, Disk Utility run from the hard drive also says the disk is fine). HOWEVER, the Leopard DVD still won't boot the MacBook Pro. I made one more attempt to create a Windows partition using Boot Camp assistant, and once again generated a kernal panic in the midst of partitioning.
It seems that I've done something to the stuff on the hard drive that's needed at boot time or partitioning time. I can't erase and reformat the drive, because the Leopard install DVD won't start up the machine. Even though DiskWarrior creates a directory that Disk Utility says is fine, I cannot recreate a Windows partition.
Any advice what I can or should do next? I can try using the System Install DVD that came with the laptop, or perhaps the system restore DVD, but my bet is they won't start the machine either.
Please feel free to ask any questions, send me to any other resources, or contact me via email if you have ideas. I have a 10 day business trip beginning Sunday March 30, and I desperately need a working laptop by then.
    Thanks so much.

"Responding" to my own post: the Install DVD that came with my MacBook Pro will boot it!
So, I'll try running the earlier version of Disk Utility that came on IT (10.5.4, current Leopard version is 11.0) to repair the MacBook Pro's internal hard drive, THEN see if I can boot from the Leopard install disk (the notion being that I can (groan) recreate a virgin Leopard environment on the laptop with no traces of prior disk formatting nightmares.
(a few minutes later): the Leopard Installer DVD will now boot the MacBook Pro. As one last attempt to avoid the whole reinstall nightmare, I'll try running Disk Utility from the Leopard Install DVD, and if it passes, make one more attempt to create a boot camp partition on my hard drive. If that doesn't work, next step is to wipe the internal drive and do a clean install of Leopard and all my other necessary stuff.
    Any other ideas?

I found the solution to my problem, download these drivers from AMD for the Radeon graphics adapter. This will get audio out on HDMI working with surround on WIndows 7.
