Proper Video output signal from FCPX for Color correction

I have bene color grading/correcting on my Macbook Pro, but I recently found out (should have known better) that the colors are not very accurate or even universal so I am really correcting colors in the dark.
I want to get a proper device that I can get a REAL UNIVERSAL VIDEO SIGNAL out form my macbook pro to a monitor.  Right now it is a computer signal.
I heard of the Matrox box, but I am not sure how it works.
Really looking for something inexpensive to do some basic correct color grading.
Anyone can help me steer in the right direction?
Do I need a new seperate monitor, or justa  device to get the correct video signal?
Thanks

Bump... anyone?

I have been able to upload videos to vimeo from FCPX in the past. However, now FC gives me a message that my password is incorrect. This is despite the fact that my password allows me to sign into the Vimeo website. I have reset my vimeo password, restarted final cut and restarted my computer. Any ideas?

Log in to Vimeo and change your password on the Vimeo site. Then update your FCPX settings for Vimeo to reflect the new password.
I think Vimeo required this in light of the Heartbleed hack.

When I change my work space from editing to color correction CS5.5 crashes.
Can get it to change from editing to audio work space without crashing, but when I want to change back from audio to editing it crashes then too.
    Any help appreciated.

In my quick search (check me out there), THIS DRIVER appears to be the latest. I would install and test with it. I find it a good idea to do a System Restore Point for before a driver install, and to also keep a few older drivers available, just in case one needs to roll-back.

  • Advice for logical workflow for color correcting and color grading

I am an experienced user of  PPRO CS5.  I am a novice with color correcting and color grading.  I am also just barely competant in AE CS5.  It has been suggested that I use AE for color correcting my footage.  Can you advise me as to the most logical workflow for doing this in coordination with PPRO CS5?  Are there some tutorials that you recommend?  I subscribe to Lynda.com and I think that they have some great tutorials, I am unsure as to where to begin looking and what to search for.
    Thanks so much,

You can do it that way, sure. But you don't have to. You can accomplish quite a lot without leaving PPro. This has two major advantages. First, if you aren't using AE for anything else, it gets you out of using AE at all, so gets you out of climbing another set  of learning curves.
Second, even if you are using AE for other things (I use AE to make motion lower thirds, for example), doing the work in PPro can improve exporting speeds. This is because AE gets restricted to a single processor core in some workflows as discussed in this thread and others (search around if you're interested). This can make exporting take 3x as long or longer, depending on how much footage has to be processed by AE.
So, how to do color correction without leaving PPro? Use either a luma corrector or luma curve effect to set black and white points, and contrast (use a waveform monitor to help). Then use a three way color corrector effect to get rid of any residual color casts (use the vectorscope to help, and the RGB parade, etc.).
If you find you have specific colors that need to be fixed, you can apply another three way color correction effect and use it to make that secondary color correction (for example I find the blue dyes used in many labels tend to fluoresce under fluorescent lighting, and has to be desaturated with a secondary color correction or it "blooms" on an HDTV -- IOW, it has to be made "broadcast safe").
If you want tutorials for using these tools, the ones on Creative Cow by Andrew Devis are quite good, and free. The ones on color correction with PPro cs6 start at tutorial number 47. There's a bunch of them. All good.
Finally, get a copy of Van Hurkman's Color Correction Handbook. May be the best technical book I've ever read, and it'll certainly point you in the right direction for doing color correction work regardless of which tools you use to do it.

Is there a recomended way to delete proxy and optimized clips once a project is completed and is ready for archive? also, can proxy and optimized clips be removed (to save space) once a project is ready for color correction and the original clips are used

No, they are NOT the same as proxy or optimized.
When you add a clip to your timeline and, say, apply an effect to it, or superimpose a title on the clip, FCP X has to make many calculations to determine what color each pixel of each frame should be. If a section of your timeline is not rendered, it has to do all these calculations every time you play those frames. A render file has the frames already "calculated", so it plays fast and smoothly.
For simple compositions and a fast computer, you may avoid rendering completely - and you may also choose to only render the portions where playback stutters.
Render files can be safely deleted. FCP X can recreate them if needed (either automatically if you have "background render" on, or on demand, when you select the "render" or "render all" commands).

    Hi,
Final Cut will output the video at the resolution of your project's timeline.
You can change the settings and scale your project up though by adjusting the sequence settings and then, if necessary, copying and pasting attributes to scale up the sequence.
I had this question before and made a video explanation of how to re-scale a sequence here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=***9d-rHsKo&feature=youtu.be .
If you have any more questions about this then just drop me a message here.

  • No DVI Output signal from PC

Hi, recently i bought and HP P2-1394 model PC, first i was using it with a "normal" monitor, VGA PC input without problems, but last week i bought a new TV with HDMI input the problem is that i can;t configure it well,
    I'm using DVI-HDMI cable.
First, i can't get video signal if the old monitor is not connected, once i get the signal, i disable the old monitor from vga configurations, after restart i can't get signal again. so i need to connect old monitor again and restart PC.
I only want on my desk the new one, not both. Do you know how can i solve this.?

    Hi,
Review this posted document for the HP p21394.
The specifications for the HP p2-1394 do not indicate that the integrated video processor will support dual video outputs at the sametime.  This may well be a documentation oversight or dual monitors are not going work at the sametime.

  • Video output separate from screen

This may be more complicated than I suspect. We have had a string of thiefts from my office lately. The thieves are only taking things they can fit in their pockets, loose change, digital cameras, digital video cameras, stuff like that. My iMac is always on and running in screen saver mode. I'd like to have the imac camera signal being fed to my Security DVR device, while the screen saver is still running. I can get the signal to my DVR via the video output, but of course it only show what I see on the primary display. Can I separate those two video signals and capture what the camera see's while the screen saver is on?
    Thank you,
    Todd

Have you tried using *extended desktop mode* and setting the external display (ie your DVR) as the primary display? That would make your iMac display the secondary display and provided you don't drag any windows onto it, it should only show a blank screen.
You will need to have a separate display connected to your DVR so you can see things to set it up once you switch the iMac into extended desktop mode & set the external display as your primary display
You do this in +System Prefs > Displays+ but the controls for the external display only appear when you have an external display connected. You start extended desktop mode by UNchecking the mirror displays item. Once you are sure everything is working correctly, you could turn off the external display while your DVR continues to record.

  • My new (2 weeks old) Macbook Pro, wont send video output signal to beamer... What can I do?  I have the adapter to vga but it does not work...

Hi, I have a new MacBook Pro and I dont get video output to a beamer although I have the regular
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and it works fine with my older MacBook...
Thanks a lot for your tips...

That should work. When you first hook it up it will probably have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In SystemPreferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.
If you also want audio you'll need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable

  • Generating 1mv output signal from AO1 using NI 9381 card

    Hi,
I am using NI 9074 cRIO & NI 9381 IO card, I am trying to generate 1mv signal from the AI port.
    1. Programatically i am supplying 1mv to AO port and reading AI port.
    2. On the AI port i am getting 22mv without connecting AO port to it .
    3. Is there any method to achieve this task.
Please help me in this.Thank you.

According to the specifications the offset error can be as large as 16 mV depending on calibration and temperature.
Devices with input multiplexers can experience an effect called ghosting which results from capacitances in the input circuitry charging to unknown voltages due to leakage currents from adjacent channel inputs or other internal circuit nodes. Measurements made with the input open or floating do not have any meaning. The manual recommends input source impedances less than 1000 ohms.
As has already been mentioned the resolution is larger than 1 mV. When you combine the offset and gain errors of both the AO and AI channels, in the best case you will not know the output within 11.5 mV and in the worst case the error could be greater than 66 mV.
If you need both 1 mV resolution and 1 mV accuracy, you will need a better device.

  • Output signal from an array of excel to servotube

    Hi All,
I'm doing a test that the input of the test should be an excel files of 2D array (for example, we can have 1000 point sinusoid here). I want to get analog output from this 2D array and send it to a servotube. The problem is how I can send this sinusoid analog output to the servotube. Two files are attached here, the post-filter and sensor test with servotube. The array analog output comes from the post-filter. What I wanna do is to send this analog output to the servotube which shows in the case of Another VI.
    I appreciate everyone's help.
    Thank you very much.

  • Suggestions for Color Correction or Encoding?

I've begun videotaping concerts for a local venue in Chattanooga, TN. I use three Canon HV40s, record the sound from the board, and edit in FCP7. I have Magic Bullet but do not use it for these concerts. Finally, I use Compressor 3.5 to encode. Here's the link below, plus the encoding specs. Does anyone have any recommendations to make the video sharper or better color? I have not been happy with the 3-way color corrector, because even the slightest adjustment to the lows blows them out. I know one of the problems is that the HV40 is not a prosumer camcorder and does not handle low light very well. The other question, about the sharpness - should I change my pixel ratio from default to square? That's the only thing I can think of that would make it pixelated like that (it's not terrible but I think it can be better). Thanks for any feedback!

You really gave yourself the answer -- better lighting and gear will help a lot.
I'd take a look at Color for messing with your footage. It will take some time, more time than better shooting does (going back to the "don't try to fix everything in post" theme). Now you know why the big guys spent so much time setting up to get it right (and why they cost more).
I see you're rendering MP4, but what's your final output? Is it for web, DVD, or a file streamed off a computer?
Note that some of the consumer cameras do better in low light than the big ones. But typically you're in a high key, high contrast lighting situation. They're not the same.

  • Monitor for color correction

    Hello guys,
I am a newbie to Color and Color Correction. I have a dual monitor setup with my Mac Pro.
I have two 24 inches of DELL 2408WFP & DELL 2407WFP. These monitors have different color, and I think it is just stupid how Dell manufactures them.
Anyways, From what I have learned, I know I am not suppose to do perform color correction for videos on any regular LCD monitors. Can you experts suggest me good color correction monitor? Not too expensive. I am not doing any major flim/music video or anything such. This is just a hobby of mine, and I'd like to learn new things as time goes on. Most of my videos are travel videos & I try to make a cinematography out of it. I also shoot landscapes.
I hope you guys can direct me right.
    Thanks,
    Lowell

I think there is a lot of snobery on this forum regarding hardware requirements. If you are not entertaining clients who have just come from a Da Vinci suite, then you CAN live with out a Broadcast monitor that meets EBU specs. The important thing is to use a video monitor and not a computer monitor. You will need a decklink like card to get the video into composite or component format, that later will give a cleaner image but most television is viewed in composite any way. Colorgrading is a matter of comparing the before and after image and comparing the graded shot with the pictures around it. The scopes will keep you informed of the limits and will help you interprit the monitor. Rember if the shot looks better after grading on a cheaper monitor then it will look better on a Grade A monitor with SDI inputs. Don't let the "big" boys put you off, and use the software that you own to inprove your video and your skill-set.
    Good luck from Boaz
