Proper way to copy contents of a drive

I have a 500GB G-Raid mini drive that has about 400GBs of various material on it,...mostly video. I need to copy the entire contents of the drive to a LACIE 500GB mini hub drive.
Problem is that when I SELECT ALL (contents on the G-RAID), COPY and go to paste that to the LACIE, it starts copying fine but inevitably there comes up an error that there is something on the G-RAID that can't be copied, stopping the entire process.
I've encountered this when copying data between lots of different types of drives and what I've found is that if you copy the files individually, they go fine and can be copied, but when you try to copy the entire contents in one shot, you get the error stating individual files can't be copied.
Is there a "correct" methodology for copying all data from one external drive to another external drive?
Thanks for any input.

BEST way would be to get Carbon COpy Cloner (free...versiontracker.com) and use it to clone EVERYTHING on the drive.
Next best way is to highlight everything and then DRAG AND DROP. COpy/Paste of contents from one drive to another...dunno about that. Never tried that. Drag and Drop is good though.
But use Carbon Copy Cloner...that is the best way.

  • Iphoto Library proper way to copy or export

    Hi Folks,
I would like to export or copy my entire Iphoto library over to a new drive for a complete backup. I tried to export and chose Iphoto library (which has 663 files thus far) and it keeps aborting. Can I just copy or drag the whole Iphoto folder over to another disc? Will doing it that way preserve all the necessary data?
    Jim

    Jim,
First check that the new drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled) because a Windows formatted drive can cause problems with your library.
Copy the entire iPhoto Library folder to the new drive. That's the only way to copy the photos and the database, which includes albums, keywords, and all other iPhoto metadata. Once copied, you can Option-launch iPhoto, choose the library on that drive, and open it to check that it functions properly. You'll have to Option-launch and select your main library to get back to it after you have tested the back-up.
    Regards.

  • HT4527 Is there any way to copy content of iPod to an external drive without having the Id and password on the device?

I am afraid I will lose content if I plug in to my laptop. I have aquired a used iPod Classic and want to keep some of the content on my external drive to merge with my existing account. Is there any way to do so. All of my research points to needing to authorize my computer first, but I do not have that info. Thanks for any help.

You are not entitled to the content of the device. Wipe it out and start afresh.

  • Is there any way to copy content from my iPhone to a brand new Mac with a blank iTunes library?

    Bit of background:
This time last week, I had a MacBook Air and a 6 year old desktop PC. Everything I had was on both of them, so they acted as each other's back up. This Sunday evening just gone, my PC finally died a traumatic death, and I can't even get it to boot from Safe Mode. Then on Monday while I was at work, my house was burgled, and my MacBook Air was stolen, amongst many other things. All I have now is my iPhone 4S which was with me at the time. All my music, photos, videos etc are on my iPhone, but I'm very aware that when I eventually get my replacement MacBook from our insurance company (I'm being realistic and accepting that I'll never see my stuff again), as soon as I plug my phone into a blank iTunes library, I'll lose everything that's on there. Obviously I can re-download everything I've purchased from iTunes, though it will take a VERY long time and I still won't have playlists etc, and I can probably either Dropbox or email what photos I have on there, but I have a lot of video clips from over the last few years that aren't on my camera roll - they're in the phone as proper videos, in the video player app, and I can't get Dropbox to view that location, or figure out how to email them. The videos are very important to me and I really don't want to lose them; so much so that I'm thinking of never syncing my iPhone ever again!
Basically, what I'm asking is, how can I copy everything from my iPhone into a blank iTunes library? Is it even possible?
ANY input whatsoever would be greatly appreciated - I really don't want to lose all my content over this, so please please please help if you can!
    Thanks in advance

wjosten - thanks very much for the detailed instructions. I'll try this as soon as I get my replacement and it looks like you'll probably end up getting the green tick

  • Copying contents between hard drives with the same folder names erases data

I have Final Cut Pro assets stored in two hard drives. I was attempting to consolidate them into a single directory on one of the two hard drives. I did this by dragging and dropping the contents of one folder into the equivalent folder on the destination hard drive, meaning that several folder names were shared between the two directories.
In Windows, the only contents that would be overwritten are files and folders who share the exact same relative name during the copy procedure. However, OS X appears to have erased the entire contents of the destination folder in favor of the contents of the source folder.
Time Machine is not enabled: Not enough hard drive space to store everything twice.
Is this by design? Am I missing something? Is my data recoverable by means that would not cost me several hundreds of dollars? On a scale of 1 to screwed, am I screwed?
    Message was edited by: NuclearBastard

Seems like you did not select the content but the folder itself. Let's say you're copying from folder A to B. To only overwrite stuff in folder B with the same name while keeping other files & folders, you need to go inside folder A and select the content. If you do select folder A itself, it will completely replace folder B. This is normal behaviour and I'm sure it's the same with other operating systems like Windows.
This behaviour, of course, applies also to any subfolders within A & B, so you can't just use the Finder for such a +merge operation+. I'm not 100% sure, but since you were overwriting a lot of stuff, I'd say you're screwed and your data is gone, sorry.
To avoid things like that in the future, you might want to use software which has the ability to synchronize file structures. In Terminal you can use ditto for that, but there are several GUI apps out there, too. Just search http://www.versiontracker.com for merge or synchronize and you should find something.

  • Best way to install a new hard drive into a laptop?

what's the proper way to install a new hard drive into a laptop? i've heard that cloning can result in very slow boot up and shut down times, and that the proper method is install the new hard drive, install OSX, and restore data from time machine. comments? thanks very much

Cloning doesn't cause the resulting system to slow down in and of itself, but it does retain any previous problems, which can build up over time and result in poor performance. (The same can be said of installing new system versions on top of old versions.)
A clean OS X installation will give you a clean base to start from. Mass-restoring data and applications will undo some of that benefit, but by no means all.

  • Easiest way to copy X220 Lenovo image to a mSATA drive

What is the easiest way to copy the Lenovo image to a mSATA drive so that my X220 will boot from the device?
Should I just burn recovery discs, install the mSATA while leaving the 2.5" port empty, and run the recovery process?   I'm only getting a 32GB mSATA drive so maybe copying an image may not work unless the space required is signifcantly less than 32GB for Win 7 64 bit.
    Thanks in advance.
Moderator edit: Matched subject to content.

    Thanks Sveintore!
I may have to do a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit and then just add on some necessary or nice to have Thinkpad applications.
The recovery disc will still be on the origianl 2.5" 320GB I will be reattaching once I get the smaller mSATA SSD so I can do away with that.

Hi Shane.  Not much in the way of thoughts - - but fwiw:
    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.
    Thanks,

    3. clone internal HD to target HD (external)   [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
    5. open bottom (see videos on ifixit or youtube on same) and remove old, install new.

Are the videos being stored in iMovie or another application? Have you exported/shared the video? If the video is in iMovie what version of iMovie are you using? Give as much info as possible, and you may also want to post the question in the iLife section of this forum since more people with video skills will be reading the iLife/iMovie threads.

Cool!! You're welcome - but BDAqua (there's that name again!) deserves the credit (although I knew it too)
So much for a Mac's claim of 'continuity' and 'ease of use' huh?

  • Copying a new .class file for WLS to use, proper way?

Hello. I'm doing some servlet development and I would like to know what is
the proper way to deploy any .class files and servlets (also .class files)?
If I just copy them into the proper directory, am I supposed to have to
restart the server? Is that normal, or should WLS just pick up the new one?
It does that with JSPs, can it do that with servlets and supporting classes?
    Thanks.

I found out that I was copying the wrong file to the right place (.java
instead of the .class :<). So once I fixed that small little :> problem, I
was off and running. Thank you for your help! :>

    Hi Peter,
Normally weblogic will redeploy automatically application, either web
or ejb, without restarting the server, when it's copied to applications
directory on the server. Applications should be properly packaged.Servlets
and supported files should be in war file, ejb-s in ejb-jar files.
I'm not sure if it would work right for plain unpacked class files.

  • Is there a way to copy a movie that I've purchased that resides in iTunes onto a thumb drive?

I have a mini projector that I would like to play movies on.  All of my digital movies live in iTunes.  Is there a way to copy the movies onto a thumb drive so that I can plug it in and watch them on my mini projector?  I don't want to have to load up my phone with movies and take up all the space.

You can easily copy it by dragging it from iTunes playlist to the drive in Finder but it won't do you any good.  iTunes Store movies only play back on devices running Apple software.  You would have to connect your projector to a computer or Apple mobile device.
