Proper way to make a timer

I'm needing to write a program that updates periodically...I'm assuming I could just make a thread sleep, but what would be the most proper and simplest way to implement this feature?

That would be proper. Slep for a while, wake up and do something and then go to sleep again. Just like me -:)

Proper way to make bulk changes the Owner ID, Path and file share credentials for my existing subscriptions, ExtensionSettings

We are going through with an upgrade/migration to SSRS 2012 and moving everything to a different domain. We have about 200 active subscriptions running, the reports are being delivered to a file share. What is the correct way, in bulk, to change
the OwnerId, the Path and the FileShare Username password credentials for these subscriptions? I see these values are being stored in Subscriptions > ExtensionSettings. I see that the file share path and Owner wouldn't be a problem to change,
but since I see the file share credentials are encrypted I would not be able change them directly in ExtensionSettings. Anyone know the proper way to change the Owner ID, Path and file share credentials for my existing subscriptions without having to
change each one of them manually in the report manager?
Note: Reporting Services Native upgrade from SSRS 2005 to SSRS 2012.

Based on my understanding, you want to change the Owner ID, Path and file share credentials for all existing subscriptions.
In Reporting Services, the subscription information are stored in the Report Server database. In your scenario, you can go to report server database and run the query to list all the subscriptions, then modify the owner and fileshare paths in the subscriptions

the file share credentials for subscriptions, you can run the query provided by

Proper way to re-setup Time Capsule

Hi,
I am in the process of re-installing OSX. Previously, I set up a Time Capsule and Time Machine by following Pondini's guide (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/TCQ1.html).
My question is after re-installing OSX, and the 10.6.5 combo update, I noticed that my Time Capsule is recognized by my iMac under shared devices. Should I re-install the drivers that came with my Time Capsule anyway? The wireless network seems to still be functioning as my iPhone can connect without any issues. I haven't yet tried to restart Time Machine, as I am wondering if I need to install the drivers first. Don't want to mess anything up.

There are more recent updates than the versions that came on the CD. Click the Apple icon at the upper left of your screen and click Software Updates. That will install the latest version of AirPort Utility 5.5.2. Once that is done, open AirPort Utility and you will see a notice that a firmware update 7.5.2 is available for your Time Capsule.
Any future updates will be done in this same way. There's no reason to keep the CD around unless you want to.

Proper way to delete my time machine backups?

I am new here, but have used the communities to solve issues with my macs.
I have a question about Time Machine. I have a macbook pro that I have backed up with time machine for over two years now. It works fine.
I just bought an imac and want to use the disk I was backing up the macbook to backup the new imac instead. I have another disk I am going to use for the macbook. I do not have Time capsule. It is all cable connections.
So my questions are:
1- Can I move the TM files from the old disk to the new one? How do I do that so that TM will not complain that the old back is missing on the macbook?
2- Once I get that done, should I format the disk before I start using it with the imac?

The answer is yes, but it may not be a great idea.
The way TM works is fairly complex and corruption fairly easy.. unfortunately you tend not to know about it until you actually need the backup. It is a much better idea to archive the backup up to the present time. And start a fresh TM backup on the disk.
In my testing though, I did copy the sparsebundle from a TC to a NAS with TM ability. Then reset the TM to using the existing TM backup directory on the NAS, and it picked up and used the old sparsebundle and worked fine. To trust it, which you will note I don't readily do.. I would still do a restore to a different target disk. Try it yourself.. since you are playing around and you can easily use the disks you have. Try doing a restore of whole disk.. it is a great exercise in how long this takes.. obviously use a different target disk. Start it when you go to bed as it can take several hours.

HDD are cheap btw.. just buy another and archive the existing one. In a year or two and you have never needed anything from it, and you have current backups.. then wipe and reuse it.. but I found keeping old hard disks from previous computers (or backups) as long term archives has got lost files back where nothing else worked.

Yes, I would always format before using.. issues on a disk will show up. But note the above if this is wiping your old backups.. think hard about the value of not just buying another drive.

Is there a way to make the Time Capsule compatible with the iBook Clamshell (2000 not 1999)?

We upgraaded our router to the new time capsule over christmas break and it works great but our old ibook clamshell doesnt work with it. is says an error has occured when i try to connect to it.

What type of security is defined for your wireless network? I may be wrong, but I don't believe that the AirPort Card supports anything better than the very weak WEP encryption. It also only works on the 2.4 GHz band. I'm presuming you configured the Time Capsule to support that band.

Is there any way to make your time line layers different colors ?

Scrolling up & own the time line panel is a bit of a pain trying to find certain objects on the time line.i learn about doing th option click o why ever key it is that allows you to select the item on your stage which highlights the object on your time line. Yet if you could color the layer it would be a good system so you would know fom just looking at the oolong of the layer what is what.

Naming layers is vital. Layer management is important. But no, you can't color code layers. It'd be nice. In the "Motion" menu (left of the File menu) inside the app, there's a chose to go to the feedback page. Tell the dev team you want it.

Countdown Timer for Fileserv pauses when viewing other tabs, resumes when returned to tab. Is there any way to make the timer keep going?

Hi, when I use Fileserv to download files, it has a countdown timer like many file-hosting services. However if I go view other tabs while the timer is going, it gets paused until I come back to the tab and then it resumes.
For example, I download a file and the timer starts from 30 seconds, at the 25 second mark I view a different tab (lets say to check my email), and after about 40 seconds or so I come back to the Fileserv tab and it's just counting down from 25 seconds.
This didn't happen before when I was on 3.6.
Is there anyway to keep the timer going? As 30 seconds is precious enough to check an email or blog while I wait.

Maybe it keeps working if you tear off that tab and open it in its own window.

When I try to make a time lapse in lightroom it cuts off the end of the video

If you have creative cloud, there is a far better way to make a time-lapse using Photoshop. The Lightroom way works but is a very slow kludge that creates files that you have to recompress to make them work. I would only use this if you don't have Photoshop or quicktime Pro. What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)

Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands. At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal. With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

Iphone 4S newly updated to iOS8, keeps popping up window notifying me of things I turned off (cell usage, location, etc) to preserve battery life. Is there any way to make them stop telling me every time I use the affected apps?

I have finally taken the step of updating my iPhone 4S to iOS8 after learning the hard way last update to wait for the bugs to be worked out. I was horrified to find that the battery was being sucked dry in no time at all. After finding a great article posted elsewhere on the apple forums, I went through and turned off all unnecessary options involving the use of cell data, location services and background refreshing. My battery life has thankfully returned to what it was before the update.
HOWEVER, now, every time I open an app for which I turned these things off, the window informing me of that pops up.   I am getting really irritated by this as I made all of these decisions deliberately and am well aware that I may need to go back and change them in order to activate certain capabilities when I want to use them. I had done the same thing with the last iOS, but there were far fewer that needed to be turned off and the battery life seemed to be less affected by those that I left on so it was not the annoyance it has become now.
Is there any way to make the phone stop presenting me with these idiot messages?   TIA

Is there a way to make the audio preview whenyou hold Control and slide the time handle the default?

Is there a way to make it so that the audio preview that happens when you hold Control as you slide the Current Time Indicator handle is the default, so that you don't have to hold Control every time you slide it? It's gotten to where I'm holding Control anytime I slide that handle, so it would actually be quite convenient to be able to make the audio preview the default setting instead of requiring the holding down of Control. I searched in options but if it's there I must have missed it.

You can use the Dreamweaver FTP (or a different FTP client) to completely copy the original website to your development computer, then, before making changes, you can copy the whole thing to a directory called something like "website original"
If you want to run both the old and new sites on the remote server, this is often possible. Add a folder/directory to the server and call it something like "new" and upload the new files there until you are ready to replace the old site
All of this you can do with FTP

Undoable edits: Proper way to invoke an edit the first time

I am currently using the undoable edit package of swing. While everything works fine i am using a kind of strange way to add UndoableEdits to the UndoManager.

    }I do this because the "hasBeenDone" and "alive" flags within "AbstractUndoableEdit" are set both to true in the constructor and so i am only able to "undo()" the edit after adding it to the UndoManager. But what i would like to do is to add the edit to the UndoManager and the UndoManager invokes the edit, so that the edit is applied to the editable component for the first time (Invoking redo).
So: What is the proper way to apply an edit to the component before adding or while adding it to the UndoManager?

Basically, you edit your component in some way (in the same way you would without supporting undoability). After the component has been edited, you create an appropriate UndoableEdit instance, put it into an UndoableEditEvent, and fire the event. (Do not use the UndoableEdit to modify your component in the first place.)
