Proper way to migrate OS to new SSD with mSSD cache Intel RST installed ?

Hi everyone,
I have a laptop hp envy dv6 7300 CTO.
it has  750 GB SATA  with 32 GB  mSSD for Intel RST cache now.
Right now,  I am purchasing 500 GB SSD to upgrade my HDD so I guess I do not need intel RST to work with my new SSD.
I am not sure about how to disable intel RST cache properly (without damaging OS)
I think
1.  Backup my important data
2.  Disable Intel RST in laptop BIOS  , just change from <enable> to <disable>  and hope system will resolve everything.
3.  make sure system run in AHCI mode, check boot order
4.  Boot to windows , make sure everything work fine (should see new 32 GB drive)   uninstall intel RST driver stuff.
5.  Clone HDD to new SSD
6.  install SSD to laptop   , set boot order
Am I correct about process ?

Erico has a guide on moving to SSD ,with several methods:

  • Best way to migrate to a  new SSD drive for performance and reliabilility

    Hello all,
My 2011 15" MacBook Pro is about 3 weeks old and my new OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD is coming in tomorrow.
What is the best way to move my system over to the new drive? I have Time Machine backups on my external Firewire drive as well as complete drive images made with CCC. I have read where some have had problems cloning to a new SSD using a drive image.
My plan is to format the drive and install the OS with the cd then move my applications and files over with Time Machine but it would be much easier to just clone the existing drive image but I don't want any problems down the road. What is the best practice?
    Thanks.

    Follow this outline:
+Step One+: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Quit and shutdown.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
+Step Two+: Remove the old drive and install the new drive. Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure. You can buy one at OWC who are also a good vendor for drives.
+Step Three+: Boot from the external drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
+Step Four+: New Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
+Step Five+: Clone the old drive to the new drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive.
Source means the old external drive.
+Step Six+: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume. Click on the Restart button. You should boot from the new drive. Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

Run the cleaner tool and reinstall with sufficient user privileges and security stuff turned off. Your install went wrong because you didn't consider this.

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • Proper way to migrate schema from one DS5.2 to another

What is the best error free way to migrate schema from one Directory Server 5.2 to another.
    Thanks,

I have migrated schema from 5.1 to 5.2 and below are my experiences. Check if this helps you in any way.
    - After overwriting 99user.ldif from 5.1 to 5.2; experienced problems in starting the DS 5.2 instance. On looking into the logs, few object classes and attributes gave problems.
    - Modified 99user.ldif in DS 5.2 by appending schema values group by group. Able to start DS 5.2 instance without problems
    - Migrated data (ldif file) via ldif2db command to DS 5.2
    - Encountered problems in DS 5.2; Suffix got dissappeared after migrating the data and a restart of DS 5.2 instance. Upon looking logs and few troubleshooting steps, found the aci's in the data file creating problems
    - Removed aci's in data (ldif file) manually and migrated using ldapmodify command and it worked

  • Can I migrate to new SSD with time machine?

So I am upgrading my stock HDD in My Macbook Pro mid 2010 15" to 2 SSD's, one in the hard drive bay and the other in the optical drive bay (with an OWC data doubler), and then setting them up as a RAID 0 config. How do I go about doing this (the software part). Can I simply use the time machine backup I regularly make and restore it onto the new SSDs?

I certainly would not do any RAID with SSDs. All you are doing with RAID 0 is making your system more prone to failure. The speed of the SSDs negates the need for a RAID 0 setup.
Can you use your TM backup? Sure that is what it is for. But since you are running a 2010 MBP make yourself a USB thumb drive of the Recovery HD partition using the Recovery Disk Assistant program downloaded from the Apple download site so you can boot the system from that thumb drive and use the option to to restore from your TM backup.

  • What is the best way to migrate to a new computer and software version?

New computer, new software version.  Brand new MacPro with OS X v10.9.4 and Pegasus Promise 24 TB R8 Raid 5.  Old machine would only run FCX v10.0.9.  All project and media files on eSATA drives hooked up to (really) old MacPro.  No room to make copies on that system.
Ready to start copying projects and events to the new machine via ethernet cable hookup.  Haven't yet updated FCX to the latest version on the new machine.  Need some advice first.
What would be the most efficient method of getting the many terabytes of events and projects transferred to the new machine?  Should I copy everything via FC instead of the finder on the old machine and then try to relink media, or Just use the new machine to suck everything over to the Pegasus via the finder and update FC and use the new media management features to to relink?  Or is there a means of transferring the data without loosing the links?
My head is spinning!  Feels like there are bees living in there.
    Any and all suggestions welcome.
    Jimbo

You also need to ask yourself how many of the old projects you really need to copy across.
We tend to get very  attached to our old projects and don't like to trash them "in case we need them in the future".
Frequently we don't require them any more and they just litter our systems.
As long as you keep copies of the original media on the SD cards/tapes, you can always revisit them, albeit with a bit of work  .  .  .  though I generally find that repeating a project is much quicker than the original as most of the edit decisions remain in your memory.

  • File opening throws RBS exception after migrating to a new farm with sql 2012

We have successfully migrated the SP 2010 -sql 2008 r2 wss_content to a new sp2010 farm with sql 2012. The old and new farms are configured for RBS - FIlestream.
In the new farm when tried opening a document we see the below exceptions in event viewer. The documents open fine for admin users and fail for others. I have verified all the permissions on the blob store file location and it looks good. Users have no
issue uploading new files over and below the set the file size limit.
Any suggestions on how to debug this would be great, do we need to rerun the .migrate() to realign any of the blob file references, we played around setting the max file size couple of times.

Migration - its a content db backup/restore/mount to new farm with sql 2012 from sql 2008 r2
Okie here are the results after we tried to narrow down the issue to few steps-
This issue happens on documents that are already existed in the content db prior to migration. we picked two docs from one library. DOC A and DOC B of close to same size..
DOC A - file size 64k, rbs max size set to 1mb.
Regular User and SPAdmin both can open fine, check out n check in successfully.
no entries made in event vwr of front end and DB server
DOC B - file size 64k, rbs max size set to 1mb
SPAdmin - can check out n open fine, but cannot check in back - file not available error
Regular User - cannot open the file - file not avialable at the url
Both users can view doc properties at lib level..
Errors found in event vwr of DB server -
"FILESTREAM file named with GUID '00311100-0000-51eb-f3a8-0b387bc5c5ce' that belongs to
FILESTREAM data file ID 0x10001 does not exist or cannot be opened."
    and
"The operating system returned the error '2(The system cannot find the file specified.)' while attempting 'FsDoHandler::CreateFile' on 'H:\Blob_Store\a06953ae-6f49-43b1-9c2d-fefb13bda9fe\1c581a4a-b450-4143-bc3d-8d419b49b0fb\0000eb20-000066ff-0002'
    at 'fstrman.cpp'(2075)."
I incline to believe that the references for documents in blob store could have been corrupted for some documents during the migration. Any new docs uploaded to content or to blob are all accessible fine.
I'm not sure running .migrate() will re align the blob file references? Any ideas on how to effectively get this resolved..

    Hello
I need to move entire server from abc.com domain to zyz.com domain, but the server has an attached iscsi nas (maybe is a qnap).
the permission were done with windows not the nas GUI. I worries would be the permission being removed.
I will be using quest migration tool but still not feeling great about it.
what are my changes of losing permission or maybe needing to do the iscsi under windows.?
    thank you

    Hello,
this require the change to the other new forest with ADMT, free from Microsoft or other migration tools.
If the users, machines etc. are migrated and the trust is still available you can use robocopy for the data to migrate to the other domain.

  • Installing windows 7 on new SSD with no backup or disc

    Hi,
My toshiba c660d-1c6 recently crashed big time!
Won't boot at all, hdd (320GB)  seems to have died.
Just get a windows boot manager message saying that its encountered a problem, unexpected error etc.
Can't do a hdd recovery and it won't go into the repair menu (F8).
I am therefore looking at replacing it with a new ssd, but how easy will I be able to install windows 7 once I get this new ssd? Could I get a 120GB ssd and use it in my laptop?
I don't have any backups or discs to use, only my win 7 product key on the underside of the laptop.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

If you failed to burn them, you can obtain recovery discs from Toshiba. You can use those to restore to any internal drive.

  • Toshiba Tecra S3 - New SSD stuck on JBOD, can't install windows on it

I just got myself a Kingston V series 64gb SSD drive, but I'm unable to have it detected by windows installers.
After looking around, I found that drives in Tecra S3 have to be on "1RAID 0" and not JBOD to enable windows to
be installed on it. (unless you use the recovery CD, which I don't have right now, even if I wanted to use it)
I also found that the "string" needed to get the BIOS to change it when you get to "execute creation"
    is 1,2,3,4, [enter].
But here's the catch : +the BIOS ignores the string.... +
I type the string, 1234, [enter], and it cancels my desired change as if I said NO and set it back to JBOD.
(if I don't type the right string, it just get out of it but stays 1raid0 and "execute creation" is still there)
I tried on one of my other drives, and it worked fine, but for some reason this drive doesn't seem to want me to do it.
I tried the drive on USB (works fine) and the BIOS sees it for what it is, so the drive is working well (from my testing)
Any Ideas on what to do now would really be appreciated, I'm running out of ideas on what I didn't do correctly
    Thanks!

    Hi
    > I just got myself a Kingston V series 64gb SSD drive, but I'm unable to have it detected by windows installers
Did you include the RAID driver into Windows before you have tried to install OS again?
On the Toshiba European driver page you can find the RAID driver which should be included while Windows installation setup.
    Regarding the BIOS RAID change;
Im not quite sure but it could be possible that you cannot change the RAID option due to the SSD drive.
If other HDDs work properly and if the RAID can be changed using an common HDD then the issue is related to the new SSD drive.
Maybe you need to update the firmware on the SSD drive check it.

  • Best way to set up a new ssd boot up disk

    Hello
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, and am hoping to breathe some new life into it with some additional ram and an SSD for just the OS, Applications, Library and System folders.
I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about setting up the new boot up disk. I've read that it might be best to do a fresh install of the OS onto the SSD, so at the moment I'm in two minds about whether to do just that or to clone the existing disk and then delete the data I don't want on there.
Any help would be much appreciated.
