Properly Disconnect my MacBook

Hello,
I recently bought a MacBook which I connect most of the time I use it to my external 27 inch monitor.
I use a mini-display to DVI for this.
But my question, is there a proper way to do this? Like should I first close my MacBook and then unplug my mini-display cable?
Or should I first turn my display off, and than unplug the mini-display cable? Or should I keep my monitor on and turn that off at last?
And what about when starting up, should I first start my macbook, and when it's on and logged in connect  my monitor?
Or doesnt it matter in what order you do things? Since I don't want to harm the MacBook without knowing.
(p.s. I did some research on google but found very different reactions from people)
Thanks,
Mark

  • How to properly disconnect a MacBook Air from TBolt display?

    Hello everyone,
Here is my setup: I have a 13" i5 MacAir, connected to a TBolt display. Also connected to the display I have an Apple USB full size keyboard and my network, plus an USB HDD for TimeMachine. Laptop screen stays closed all the time, so I am basically using only the TBolt as a display.
From time to time, I need to take my Air out to a meeting. I disconnect the power cable, wait for the Air to go in stand-by, then the TBolt cable. Every time, my Mac OS complains that the USB HDD was not properly disconnected and I have to unmount it first. If I would do that, it would mean that each time I reconnect my Air to the display and its power, I would have to unlplug the HDD and replug it, otherwise it would not be mounted back.
Well, is there a way to safely disconnect my Mac from the display and stop the OS complaining? Doesn't Mac OS know to properly handle the situation? It is far from "it just works" in my opinion

Pulling the cable out of a mounted (usb) drive is not the proper way to disconnect it and that is why you are getting the error message.  Doing this runs the risk of leaving the drive's file system in an indeterminate state.
The proper way is to unmount it first.  Either drag it to the trash or right (control) click on the mounted drive on your desktop and select Eject.  If the drive is not showing on your desktop then set the Finder preference (General) to show it.

  • How to properly disconnect a Mini Display Port (MDP) from a Macbook Pro 2012, 1,9?

    Hello:
I was wondering if any Macxperts out there had any idea on how to properly disconnect a MDP Thunderbolt Cable from a 2012 1,9 Gen. Macbook Pro. From my experience with older Macbooks the command was "Command + F7" or something of the sort.
On my Macbook Pro 2012, there is no such button or commend to properly disconnect the plug; as if one were to disconnect or "eject" an external HD. I have read some articles on Google that some people just disconnect the plug and that action is sufice to disconnect an external video projection (Ex: Flat Screen Samsung).
Can a Macxpert or Genius comment on this piece of information? I would really apprecite some light shed on this situation. I just don't see unpluggin a cable connected to a video source enough to properly shut off a connection with out damaging the Macbook Pro's video card.
    Thanks

    Hello, Niel:
I just answer my own question. Forgive me but I am not up-to-date on the techlingo (Hot Swappable) but I just googled the term and found my answer.
    Thanks again.

  • The u, j, m and 7 keys on the keyboard are not functioning properly on my macbook air. Please Help!

The u, j, m and 7 keys on the keyboard are not functioning properly on my macbook air. In its place are a random assortment of keys (Ex - u = "eqrw" or "IOUY"). This randomly happened when logging back in after sleep mode. No liquid damage at all. Please help!

OK, I fixed the problem by doing a SMC (System Management Controller) reset as follows:
    1. Powered off my MacBook and removed everything connected except for the power chord.
    2. When powered off, I held "Shift" + "ctrl" + "Option" + "Power button" for 5 seconds or so until the little light on the front started to blink rapidly.
    3. Powered up my Mac, which took a little longer than usual to start and tested the "missing" keys which now works perfectly again.
Just added another couple of years usage with my aging mac :-)

  • My external hard disk not working properly in my macbook pro . anyone help me . its seagate  hard disk

My external hard disk not working properly in my macbook pro . anyone help me . its seagate  hard disk

You need to get some software that allows your Mac to read and write to the NTFS disk.  There's a whole bunch of stuff out there, but this program has a good review, and you can try it for free.  I would move everything off of your external drive, reformat it into Mac OSX extended, and use it for your Mac.  You don't need NTFS anymore, unless you still have a Windows computer that needs it.

  • How do you properly disconnect a vga monitor?

I use a vga monitor at work about 2 to 3 times a week. I have a MBP 13, 2011.  I use it for powerpoint presentations.
I was wondering how do you properly disconnect it once I'm done?
I normally close out the application; turn off VGA, and then just disconnect.
I feel like this may not be the proper way to do this.  I've looked for some sort of eject, but haven't found anything.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If you are switching between a monitor and a projector and the display resolutions are not the same as the MBP's then you should turn off the computer as well. I have found when using a projector that things tend to work best if the computer's display resolution is set to the resolution of the projector. It may not turn out to be necessary, but keep it in mind.

  • How to properly disconnect Headphones from Ipod Touch  Headphone Jack

I just wanted to know if there's a way to properly disconnect the headphone plug from the Jack on the Touch,
I heard that the metal contacts in the jack can be flatten out (How would that happen?), I dont want something like that to happen, especially sine i recently got the new iTouch.
If you have any idea on this, let me know
    Thanks in advance
Sorry If i seem paranoid, My last Ipod touch jack stopped working and i dont want the same thing to happen again. These Ipods aren't cheap you know...

From my knowledge, jack problems are mostly caused by snagging the cable and stressing the jack in the iPod. To disconnect just pull straight out.

  • How to properly disconnect Air from an external digital projector

Hi, I plugged my new Macbook Air into the digital projector at a client site via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter I bought at the Apple Store. I was able to project the contents of my screen, but I wasn't sure how to disconnect properly. When I unplugged the adapter, my computer seemed to freeze, shutting me out of all open programs until I did cold re-start.
What should I do next time to get a better result?
    Thank you!
    -Mike

I've always shut down the projector, and the computer reacts by reverting to single built-in monitor mode. Then I diconnect the cable.

  • Apple tv lag and disconnecting from macbook pro

I have an apple TV connected to the projector in my room. I connect my macbook pro to the apple tv wirelessly (obviously). There is an airport in the hallway (maybe 20 yards from me), and I am on a network. I have videos downloaded from the internet on my computer that I want to show my students on the projector. Sometimes it works. However, more times than not, there is a lag, the video freezes (audio continues to play usually). Sometimes the apple tv just disconnects (which means reconnecting it and re-selecting my speaker -- total pain!). I need something reliable that I can count on to use with my classes! So far, Apple TV is not it.
Also, for some reason I cannot put a DVD in the drive and have it play on through apple TV to the projector. Something about not being able to change over display?
I could really use some help, I'm really frustrated. I teach K-5th, one after the other, and I have different curriculum for each -- it is hard to have enough back up when the apple tv does not work.

  • Mac mouse stop working properly on new macbook pro

Since recently purchasing a new 13" Macbook Pro my mac mouse is not scrolling properly or responding to any gestures. I have tried almost every possible fix without success. Can anyone help, pleeeease. This is very frustrating. Feel like throwing this apparently useless mouse out and buying a non-Apple unit instead.

    Try resetting rthe PRAM.
By the way, "I have tried almost every possible fix without success" is not useful information. Without knowing what you tried, you will probably get a lot of useless information.

I connected my Macbook 2010 to my Samsung tv after disconnecting it Now I cannot fit the MAcbook screen whatever I do

    Have you checked SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAY>RESOLUTIONS?
Or you may have the display zoomed in.  CONTROL with a two finger drag on the trackpad towards you will take care of that.

  • IMessage Disconnects on Macbook Pro (Gtalk/iMessage)

Previously, I wrote about this issue here.
The internet issue has been fixed, however iMessage doesn't want to stay connected on my Macbook Pro. This is on many connections (public wifi at cafes, home connections at friend's places etc) including my VPN via my iPhone. I'm only running iMessage (with my phone number and Apple ID) as well as Gtalk via iMessage and sometimes even messages to other Apple devices don't send.
I've not upgraded to Mavericks yet and have no desire to right now. Everything was working fine up until a few weeks ago, and Google's Gtalk servers haven't shown any issues.
Are there any cache or whatever files I could delete and have iMessage rebuild to see if that's the issue, or other trouble-shooting tips? I haven't been able to find anything in Apple's documentation or on the forums.

    Hi,
    Some later Laptops have Powernap.
This Caffeine ?  (I see that it is after I Googled it. )
As the default is not to show the Buddy Lists I was not sure from what you wrote that this was what you were seeing.
Hearing the "Buddy Unavailable" Sound also makes it clear that the connection is dropped.
Messages will make it abundantly clear that any mini or micro break (time wise) in the Connection by closing the Buddy Lists as you have seen.
If you had an AIM list this would most likely close first as the way each Buddy list connects to the servers is slightly different.
Messages is "Always On" sending info that you are On Line and receiving info about changes to your Buddy list (Status Messages changes and Buddies coming On Line and going Off line and in some cases Buddy pic changes).
You will not see these breaks in service in Mail or  Browser as those apps are not always using the internet.
A Mail app "fetching" every minute is only going to be slightly delayed.
A browser always has different amounts of time to find new pages it is difficult to judge when it is being held up.
With a Google Login you will be subject to SSL which in Messages tends to mean a Manual re-connect rather than it being Automatic.
In Messages > Preferences > Accounts > Jabber/Google Account > Server Setting tab also trry the Port 443 instead of 5223  (you will have to log out first in the Account Info tab by unticking "enable this account").
In your first Pic about the Settings for Battery power you seem to have it going to Sleep at about the 3 minute mark.
That does seem a little short but as you can still see the Buddy list when it happens it probably is not this.
Of course the App will disconnect as the the computer goes to Sleep.
My Laptop is so old the battery is no longer holding a charge to allow me to test as a comparison.
As this happens with several locations and different Internet connection it does seem it may be the Mac.
I would test your Mac without Caffeine being On
If your Mac would be going to Sleep but then Caffeine keeps it "awake" there may be a slight gap in the internet service and this is what the Buddy List is responding to.

  • Wifi keeps disconnecting on MacBook Pro

While my ipad, iphone, and apple tv maintain a consistent wifi connection, my macbook pro has recently been disconnecting every few minutes.  Has anyone experienced a simlar issue or have any ideas on a fix?  The network is password protected and doesnt seem to be causing any problems with other devices.  If I hardwire the notebook, there are no problems.
