ProRes 422 & Premiere Pro CS5.5.2 Playback

I am a long-term user of CS5
Recently started using ProRes 422 footage, (LT in order to keep file size a little smaller). The footage is taken from a Ninja2 via the HDMI of a Sony HVR Z5.
I do a lot of post work on my projects and the native mpeg2 8 bit from the HVR would not hold out too well. Apart from that, I had no previous performance issues using mpeg 2 files.
Now the ProRes 422 footage in the preview window and in the timeline of PremPro is stuttering and won't play smoothly for more than a couple of seconds at a time. This has become progressively worse as the timeline has grown.
I use a single video track (I don't stack or nest) and often use 4-5 audio tracks ( 24bit .WAV) plus a stereo channel from the Ninja2. Audio settings within the project are 32 bit floating.
Average Data Rate of the ProRes (LT) Video File is 8.9 MB/s. Source Audio is 48KHz 16 Bit.
Edit Workstation system (exclusive, no other use):
Triple Channel 24GB 1600 RAM
i7 970 (Hex) 3.2GHz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 580
MB Gigabyte X58 (No Overclocking)
SSD OS & Programs
4 x 500 GB Sata2 Caviar Black RAID 0 media scratch disk and cache (Software RAID - no hardware controller). The RAID is striped at 128Kb.
1 x 1TB Sata2 Caviar Black project files
CPU Temps 44-46 C
System Temps 41 C
Graphics Temps 58-60 C
Disk Temps 30-40 C
The disk access times during playback are often less than 5 ms. Quick Bench (8MB zone) test gives RAID 0 Average Read Time of 642 MB/s, Random Access Time of 14 ms, and Burst Speed of 3411MB/s. CPU Utilisation is 2%. CPU system usage is fairly low as is the RAM demand with 50% often unused. 18Gb of RAM is allocated to Adobe programs (After Effects & Prem Pro) with 6GB available for other things.
I am using no external monitor interfaces.
The ProRes footage is imported into Prem Pro and the sequence setting is automatically created by dragging the ProRes file into the New Item folder.
The project sequence created by Premiere Pro is AVCHD 1080i Square Pixels 1920 x 1080, Upper Field First 25 fps (PAL) which is correct for me in the UK.
This works out fine as I have additional footage from a Sony NX5 which is AVCHD and happy with those sequence settings - I get smooth playback from the NX5 in both the preview window and the timeline. The resulting timeline bar colour is Yellow for both footage. If the Pro Res footage is rendered on the timeline (green bar) playback is fine. The render codec is by default I-Frame Only MPEG.
At the start of the project, the playback seemed fine, but now I am about 35 minutes in and the whole thing has ground to a stuttery conclusion.
The footage in the preview window scrubs and jogs fine, but plays for about a second or two then stutters, as does the timeline. I would expect my system to easily handle the Pros Res footage - but it doesn't.
Any similar experiences out there?

1. With that much footage, I might set previews to render to my output size, so as to cut down on final render time.
2.  112gb!  Holy Crap!  I hope you're on a fast RAID drive with that!  Otherwise saying you're headed up $*it creek without a paddle doesn't quite cover it... ...more like drowning in the $*it ocean.
With that much information you're almost always better off utilizing a rendered file rather than relying on your dynamic link.  If playback is choppy, you need to be able to render to a drive that isn't "Busy" while you're playing from it.  I've found that using separate RAID for my main project file, and my original or AE assets allows me to render out the previews to a non-busy drive, making the output faster, and the playback faster when reading it.
Dynamic linkage is great... ...if you're going to be making more changes to that piece, leave it as is and play it back, if not, RENDER THE EFFECT, or RENDER A WORK AREA set to the clip you're editing.  If you're done for the day, render the whole damned thing and leave it until you come back.  Rendered effects will play back faster than active process effects (renders are already in the video, set into it as if native to it; active process edits aren't in the video, they are applied as it is played back, and require more processing so they slow things down), and when you come back from lunch or from home, you'll have a freshly rendered slate to preview.  This means you'll be able to show off for the client by morning.  Need a Web-capable rendering for a status update you're sending to a client, DUPE the sequence, change the preview on the DUPE to match some web capable settings with smaller frame height\width resolution and compress the hell out of it.  Youtube can play it back pretty well, and vimeo also, and you'll be able to upload it in 2-4 hours (if your system is archaic like mine, smaller video outputs great).  Personally, I've found comps with AE to be a pain when trying to link and playback.  Render a work area around the comp if you're going to play it back.  IF you want to preview a whole section, Dupe the Sequence and use the Dupe to NEST the SECTION (create a trim or edit mark at the beginning and end of the section you wish to preview, select everything between the markers, right click and select nest), and you can use AME to render a small preview file, so you don't interrupt the rest of your work.
I work with more sound quality constraint than video, and the sound quality has to be real, while the video does not need to be perfect (doesn't mean I don't damn well try; I've really just begun my journey into this world, and have only begun to use prores, but found some pitfalls to experiment and solve).  I start with whatever I'm given, go to prores, edit with a prores proxy preview at ¼ the input size, and render out once just to get started.  The effects values are applied to the preview in playback, easing the playback stutter, and allowing me to work fluidly on a laptop mac with an intel core2 2.16ghz with a geforce gfx card at 256mbvram and 4gb of system ram, with (hardware hack) 2 internal drives each at 1tb, one for main use, and one for housing my project files.  Using an old esata express card raid box, I get great speed from the playback by storing the previews on RAID, while all the other files are housed on my secondary internal drive.  With multi cam AV, you need to be able to store the main clips on different drives, or on a raid store (ideally on separate RAID stores) in order to play them back while cutting them together.  However, once cut, you should render out the preview in it's entirety, and start your other edits from that point.  Then you can render just the effects and still get great playback.
If you don't see Prores in your preview box, get the AME prores presets from the adobe site, and you can place them by hand into your app (the folder should be the EncoderPresets folder in the program files on windows, on mac open the .app by right click and select show package contents>contents folder>settings>EncoderPresets and paste the .epr files there by hand).  Then open up premiere and you should be able to use prores proxy for your previews and export.  I like to export to prores and then use handbrake to export to x264 with --fake-interlaced set up so I can use it as a transcode for Encore.  Just keep your blu-ray data rates under 35mbps and you should be fine.

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 mercury playback engine will be supported on GTX 680

Could someone please confirm if Premiere Pro CS5.5 mercury playback engine will be supported on GTX 680.
    thanks

    Jim,
    Your comment was based upon results from the 560 Ti 448 card and that is € 240 or more. The 680 is € 440. That is 45% difference: € 440 - (0.45x440) = € 440 - € 198 = € 242
    Your comparison is based on a € 200 GTX 560 model, which only achieves a score of around 120 seconds, which is 55% less expensive (€ 440 - (0.55x440) = € 440 - € 242 = € 198) and more than 225% slower (120 / 53 = 2.26)
So for 55% less expenditure, you lose more than 225% performance. That is very disappointing and would rank in the 'penny-wise-pound-foolish' savings. (But that is how your system can be ranked, at least in the past). There is another major flaw in your reasoning, you are only considering number of CUDA cores, nothing else. You are disregarding all the other aspects of the new architecture and that makes your argument very weak and flawed. You have to consider the number of cores AND the memory bus in combination. Something you obviously overlooked, but although the number of cores tripled in comparison to the 580, the memory bus was reduced to 256 bits width, a 50% reduction. That means that at best the expected performance gain could be 0.5 (memory bus) x 3 (number of cores) = 1.5 and not your 300%.
    To summarize:
Now if you want to go the other way, with the 680 as the baseline, you'd say that for 60% less money, you still get 80% of the performance.
For 55% less money, you get 44% of the performance on this test.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Crashing on Playback

I just installed Premiere Pro.  Premiere starts up just fine, imports footage fine, etc. I can drop footage into the source monitor and scrub through it fine. However, as soon as I tap spacebar (or hit play), the program crashes. I can drag footage into the timeline, but the program crashes when I try to play there as well. Sometimes a few seconds of the audio can be heard before crashing, but it crashes every time. I've tried to diagnose the issue (hours of Googling and searching these forums, uninstalling codecs, etc.)
I'm trying to edit .MOV footage from a Canon T2i. I'm under the impression that CS5 can handle .MOV natively.
My video card is weak and outdated, and I was expecting the video to lag a little bit, but not to crash the program completely.
    Q6600 2.4ghz quad-core
    1.5tb 7200rpm, 250gb 7200rpm (for scratch disks)
    6gb ram
    Windows 7 64bit
    Nvidia 8400gs with updated drivers
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

I'm guessing the conflict exists between Premiere Pro and my junky video card. I don't have alot of money to put into the machine, but I'm looking at a an Nvidia Gt 440 card that supports CUDA.  Is it possible that this will help my problem?
Well, I don't think that's probably the case--at least, not the card itself. There are (likely) plenty of people using the same or a similar card, or even ATI cards without this issue. You mentioned you updated the drivers--did you get the latest from Nvidia or from the card manufacturer? Also, have you tried updating your audio drivers? Odd as it may seem, out of date audio drivers have been the source of bizarre playback issues, though usually not crashing issues.
Spending more money on a card that isn't officially supported for hardware MPE is probably not the best move right now; you're certainly welcome to try that, but I wouldn't recommend it.
What about installing additional codecs? If not, is there a free codec I could convert the H.264 clips to that would edit better with Premiere? The native support for files from my T2i was one primary reason for the upgrade to CS5.
No, don't install additional codecs. You can convert the MOVs to something like DV AVI if you want (even AME will do this), but we still haven't established what the cause of the crash is. Seeing how you had crashes with other clips (you didn't mention what the AVIs are from), I doubt that it is something specific to the files and format of them.
Do you receive an error message of any sort? Or does Premiere just go *poof*?

Any ideas? Is it just me or does it seem like "Display.dll" has something to do with my quadruple monitor setup...?
This seems plausible. That's an Adobe file, and I'm sure its related to exactly what its name implies. Check that you have the latest ATI Catalyst drivers (they're updated monthly), and if that doesn't work, you might try uninstalling and removing one of the cards from the system--that's likely the cause but unfortunately, you'll have to go to those measures in order to test that theory.

  • My 2014 MacBook Pro with retina displays crashes when I run Premiere Pro CS5

    Hi,
I just purchased a 2014 MacBook Pro with Retina display with the following specs:
2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
    16 GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
Intel Iris Pro Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
I am running Premiere Pro CS5 with Mercury Playback GPU Acceleration enabled, but my computer keeps freezing and I have to restart it every time.   Any kind of help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I had to call Apple and the tech made me enter a bunch of terminal commands to fix this. Unfortunately I can't tell you excactly what it was. I think the best way would be to call Apple.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Playback and Performance Issues

I upgraded (2) separate editing work stations to CS5 from CS4 about a month ago. I moved from 4 to 5 to try and get rid of some problems which both work stations were encountering.
The problems since the upgrade are similiar: playback from timeline has intermittent audio drop out and video going to black during playback, (new one)-video locked up but audio kept playing-system hung and had to be rebooted.
Also, when clicking around on the timeline or scrubbing the timeline, Premiere crashes.
This type of performance on playout or timeline usage is consistent on both machines which have indentical setups and builds. None of this happens all the time but happens enough to causes problems with workflow. We edit on the work stations, dub files to playback system for air, and use a shared server to move files back and forth as needed but files are always stored locally instead of using straight from server.
    These machines are:
    Premiere Pro CS5.02
OS  WIndows 7 Pro 64 bit
    12 GB Ram, DDR3-1333 (6-2GB modules)
CPU Intel Xeon Quad Core [email protected] GHZ, 2 processors, 8 MB Cache
500 GB SATA 2 hard drive, 7200 RPM, 32 MC (System Drive)...309 GB of space avail
    (3) 1 TB SATA 2 hard drives, 7200RPM, 32 MC (3 TB, RAID0 STorage) 2.16 TB of space avail
Nvidia GE Force 9800 GT Graphics card, DUAL DVI, 1 GB
REaltek High Def Audio, Drivers 6.0.1.5953
    (1) monitor in use
output of system runs to ADVC-700 breakout box to feed playback system
I have all of my software installed on C: (309 GB of 500 GB avail)
I have all of my videos files stored on D: (Raid Storage with 2.16 TB of 3 TB avail)
The only changes I've made since installing CS5 would be to change the auto save from 20 minutes to 60 minutes. Don't know if an auto save would cause an issue on playback as I've noted above.
I'm not a computer whiz by any stretch of the imagination but I can follow directions if given for testing/eval.

Do the PPBM5 Benchmark and send the results to me by PM, in addition to sending the results to Bill as indicated. I'll have a look at what might be going on here.

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 Playback problem (when mtulti tasking) (Mac)

    Hi,
I have this very weird problem with preimiere pro CS5.5. I've only experienced this today and I've already restarted my mac a number of times and the problem still persists.
Basically, I start up premiere then work on a project, I can do playback no problem, I scrub through the timeline there is audio working, I press the spacebar, the clips play no problems
HOWEVER as soon as I switch (cmd-tab) to let's say Firefox or just even leave premiere for another window. Playback stops working, pressing spacebar won't do anything also even clicking the play button on premiere won't work. I would need to start premiere all over again. The program doesn't hang but te playback just stops working, when I scrub through the timeline, the video moves but there is no audio.
I hope someone can shed light over my problem thanks.
I have never encountered this problem for over a year ever since working on premiere pro CS5/ CS5.5
    I'm on a iMac 21.5 inch late 2010.

I just had a similar issue (Mac OS 10.7.3) Premiere Pro CS 5.5.2 was getting very unstable, seemed like it was very sluggish. When I switched to another app, then back to Premiere, pressing Play or spacebar didn't do anything. However if I waited a long time, like a minute, it came back to live. I'm not sure what is going on with my Premiere Pro these days, but it seems like it's gettings slower for me. One thing I do is to use Cocktail to clean the system caches, the reboot, and it seems this temporarily helps Premiere Pro, but after a time it gets boggy again.
Any advice on what to 'clear' to get PPro in an optimized state? I have a relatively older Mac Pro, 8 core but with 24GB of ram and nVidia 4000. It might be my imagination but it seemed 5.0 and 10.6 was faster and more stable than this, but who knows. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Computer Freezes during Playback, Render and Scrubbing in Premiere Pro CS5.5

    PSU - 850watt Corsair
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
C: Drive - 600GB Velociraptor (with only program files stored on the drive)
OS - Windows Ultimate 7, 64-bit, Service Pack 1 (up to date)
Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium (with all updates)
My problem occurs only in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and not with any other Adobe programs, including After Effects.  Playback, scrubbing, or rendering in my Premiere Pro timeline causes the computer to freeze.  When it freezes I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, there is no automatic shutdown, and there is no BSOD.  The computer just freezes, forever, and needs to be shutdown manually.
This problem began a few weeks ago, only happening occassionaly.  Recently the problem has escalated to the point that I cannot use Premiere Pro CS5.5 for more than 30 seconds before it freezes.
I have several different Premiere Pro projects saved to a 1TB WD Black Caviar HDD.  In some of the projects I am using Cineform converted .mov files and in others I am using the raw(compressed) footage directly from a Canon DSLR.  This dedicated harddrive has 60% free space.
Mercury PLayback Acceleration is enabled, and I have been successfully using Premiere and the rest of the creative suite intensively since October 2011 with absolutely NO problems.  I cannot remember the system ever crashing once during this time period, until now, which is remarkable.  All software on my computer is legitimate, and there are no third party codecs installed.
What can I do to fix this problem?  All help is extremely appreciated.  THANK-YOU!
    Drew Norton

Thank you, Harm I will do this.  In response to the video card being a possible cause of the problem,  I moved forward and downloaded Furmark to test it.  When running Furmark the program crashes.  It gets going on the test and crashes, and apparently according to other websites this means my graphics card is not running at capacity.  Do any of you have experience with this?
If it is as clean cut as a busted graphics card I would be very excited to know.

  • DNxHD Premiere Pro CS5.5

    Hi guys,
I'm going to use an Atomos Samourai to record data from my camera. I'm used to work in Final Cut but on my new job I need to use a Windows with Adobe Premiere. This noon I've been struggeling to use ProRes 422 with Premiere Pro CS5.5. Too much work arounds so I decided to record Avid's DNxHD and import that into Premiere Pro. I've downloaded the latest Quicktime and the DNxHD codec from Avid. I've run the installation and restarted my pc.
When I want to setup a project in ProRes or DNxHD I can't see neither codes in the 'Video Preview' tab... The only formats I see are Microsoft AVI and various P2 formats. So basicaly I can't start a decent project.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Kind regards!

So basically I shouldn't be too worried about the video preview..?
    Correct.
Previews are for fluid Timeline playback in instances (effects added, etc.)

I have not made any changes to my system (drivers, programs, etc.) since the last time i worked with Premiere Pro with no trouble.  The only  difference is that i generated approx. 52GB of new video files (mov. uncompressed 32bit 640x480 resolution) that i was beginning to edit in to a music video.
My current problem is:: there is absolutely no playback of video in 5.0.4.   not in the tiny project window preview,  not in the source preview, and not in the timeline/canvas window.   when i push PLAY, the button turns into a square STOP button, but nothing happens.   this is independent of project or file type.  The project i was working on when playback stopped is using uncompressed 640x480 32bit Quicktime files and one 44khz/16bit .AIFF file.   as a quick doublecheck, I just added a 640x480 Apple Intermediate Codec file and it also will not play back.   I opened older projects and none of them will playback.
My problem started while i was working on a project.  I was working on the project for probably an hour and a half with no trouble.  Then it seemed to get a bit sluggish and i could hear the HD churning a little more.   After rendering out a short section (just under 10 seconds), PPro did not play back the just rendered (now greenline) section.  Immediate playback of rendered material was the default behavior, and this was the first time ever that the just rendered section did not play back.   I then discovered that no video would play back at all--in any of the windows.   I can scrub through all the video without any trouble--all the frames are there.
I shut down PPro, & restarted.  No change.   I restarted my computer.  No change.
Realizing that the problem was likely related to a lack of space on my data drive,  i deleted approx. 500GB of files off my 2 TB drive, leaving just under a 1/3 of it free.  i checked the drive for errors, and defragmented it.  Premiere Pro still wouldn't play any file from any project.
The files are fine, they will playback anywhere else (several different file types involved in different projects).  The files are compatible with Premiere Pro (uncompressed VGA resolution Quicktime .mov), i was editing on the timeline with them for hours before all video playback stopped.   All other Adobe programs  (After Effects, Photoshop work fine).
I tried to find an answer/solution on these forums, unsuccessfully.   After uninstalling PPro and reinstall (did not help), and entire Suite uninstall, Adobe Clean, and reinstall,  neither version 5.0.0 or 5.0.4 will play video --the no playback problem has persisted.
I was running out of HD space --i had less room than i thought -- down to about 7% of free space, a bone-headed move on my part.  I'm not  surprised that playback performance got compromised due to lack of space.   But i'm shocked that the problem is persisting.   Fortunately, i had just backed up my entire system the day before.  (i've backed up many times before and this never affected PPro performance)
i tried to "CLEAN" the media cache for the sequence but it had no effect  (in searching the forums, i saw somebody else have their 'crashing Premiere Pro' problem solved by hitting this button).  I just took a look in the user/application support/adobe/common/5.0 to look at the "Media Cache" folder and the "Media Cache Files" folder.   Neither of them are empty, even after hitting the CLEAN cache button in the main preferences 'Media' settings window.   I don't know if this is the correct behavior or not.   (i'd expect a "clean" command to empty the folder, but i'm not the programmer)
This does not appear to be the ATI/5.0 problem that so many Mac users suffered (i was lucky to never have that problem).    Again, i've never had any problems with Premiere Pro over the last year and a half, until working on this latest project with the Hard Drive very low on space.   I'm 99.9% positive that's at the heart of the issue.
I don't understand why a clean reinstall did not help in this regard.  The problem is clearly PPro specific.   I found one topic in the forum where someone else experienced this same "no video playback" problem, but there was never follow-up from the user saying whether or not his problem was solved (or what was done to correct the problem).
I'd love to get some help--- seems to be a very rare issue, but right now, i can do no video editing.  btw,  i started a new project as well and imported a .mov file -- same problem, no video playback.
the weird thing is that i can actually still edit video.  i just rearranged my timeline assets and rendered out a minute-long quicktime (Apple Intermediate Codec) .mov and it looks and plays as it should.    This is really weird.  I'm baffled -- there must be some way to fix this.   I don't want to have to go back to Final Cut,  certainly not when i've already paid for Create Suite 5 Production Premium and EVERYTHING works except for video playback in PrPro.
thanks in advance for your help

hello.   hey, thanks very much for writing back.  i got some good info with a search or two.  (info about what regedit is and what corresponds to it in OS X -- regedit allows you to edit "preference" keys for individual programs,  OSX's equivalent for these keys are the .plists in User & System: Preferences and Application Support)
what i ended up doing was uninstalling Premiere Pro (not the suite, just PPro).   Then i deleted a few preference files:
    from User /Preferences/Adobe:
    com.adobe.AdobePremierePro.plist
    com.Adobe.Premiere Pro.5.0.plist
    and from System Preferences:
the file:  Adobe Premiere Pro Prefs
    and..
    /.../Premiere Pro/5.0/...
AMEPrefs.xml     (i noticed that there's also a preference file in Media Encoder's own folder so i didn't sweat this one)
    Debug Database.txt
    Placeholder Preset.epr
    PostEncodeCmds.pref
    PresetCache.xml
    Trace Database.txt
    NOTE:
of course i don't know if deleting any files beyond the 2 .plist files in User Prefs was necessary, but...  it seems to have worked.
I then reinstalled Premiere Pro CS5, and fired up an old project and i've got playback of HD and DV files, and snappy editing and rendering,  so hopefully i'm good to go.   I'm just going to stick with v5.0.0 because i actually don't remember ever having any trouble with it, and i don't remember v5.0.4 adding anything i was 'missing' or 'needed'
hopefully, this thread will be useful for any future folks that run into trouble - and it's got a solution for both Windows and OS X
    happy editing,
    peace

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Performance Issues

Hi.  I have been using Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.3 for editing videos that I shoot for several years now.  I offload all the video files I shoot from a Canon XHA1 camera from a SanDisk compactflash card to a Drobo S Raid 0 array (all the drives in the Drobo are Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm drives) that I have hooked up (via an eSATA cable).
This has worked well for me but I have been noticing that I am now getting more dropped frame errors both in the program and source monitors.  I started a new project yesterday:
    General
    Editing mode: DV NTSC
    Timebase: 29.97fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 720h 480v (1.2121)
    Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)
    Fields: Lower Field First
and when I imported the footage into Premiere Pro I started getting more dropped frames and sluggish playback as to render Premiere Pro very aggravating.  It is still usable but the situation is growing worse.  Here are my system settings that I dumped from Belarc:

My question is how do I trouble shoot this problem?  I suspect that my video card is getting old and needs to be replaced but I don't want to buy another one as yet (especially when I don't know if it will solve the problem).

Do the PPBM5 Benchmark and send the results to me by PM, in addition to sending the results to Bill as indicated. I'll have a look at what might be going on here.
