ProRes footage is white in monitor

We have used compressor to transcode footage shot on a 5D MII to ProRes.  We are working in a sequence that is ProRes (HQ) because most of the footage was shot on a BlackMagic Camera.  This all worked fine until we moved the project to another computer.  Now all the 5D footage shows up as White in the source monitor.  You can't scrub through it either.  Only when you hit play can we see the footage.
Is there any way to fix this?
Also, a general question.  We are seeing more quirks in FCP 7 all the time.  Is this likely to worsen over time as the software is no longer being upgraded?  If so, is it time to move on to another edit platform, or can we expect a reasonable amount of stability out of FCP so long as we don't upgrade the OS, etc.?
Thanks,
Loch

Shane's Stock Answer #15:  White or Black Canvas or Viewer
Make sure the canvas or viewer are selected then go to VIEW>CHANNELS and set it to RGB.   It might be set to ALPHA.
OR...
Click on the drop down menu above the Viewer or Canvas and make sure that you are on IMAGE or IMAGE + WIREFRAME.
As for your "also," what "quirks?" If stuff starts not acting like it should, it's always wise to trash preferences, as they can get corrupt.  PREFERENCE MANAGER does this with one button click, and can even back up good preferences so you can keep your keyboard settings, window layouts, and project settings.  It's free...digitialrebellion.com
Things should be stable if you don't upgrade the OS.

  • ProRes footage not displaying properly in AE CS5 at 8bpc

Just installed AE CS5 and am frustrated to find that Apple ProRes 422 footage (all flavors: HQ, SQ, LT, 4x) does not display properly when the project is in 8bpc mode.
    In 8bpc mode:
    Same frame, in 16bpc mode:
This behavior does not occur with Uncompressed 10-bit Quicktimes. Only ProRes.
Obviously now that CS5 is 64-bit aware, switching to 16bpc mode isnt as much of a problem as it was in previous versions, but I often like to work in 8bpc mode for speed/performance reasons, so its a bummer that I cant do this with ProRes sources.
Is there a workaround for this (other than working in 16bpc all the time, of course)?

Hi. This is Dan R. from the After Effects team. I'm out of the office for the few weeks, so please excuse me if I don't respond as quickly as I should.
I'm not discounting what you're experiencing, but the behavior isn't typcial. On my machines, ProRes is working properly at all bit depths. Off the top of my head, I suspect a 3rd party Quicktime codec conflict. Regardless of what is causing your problem, we're committed to making sure this works correctly.
Do you have Final Cut Pro installed? Do you have any other 3rd party QT components installed? e.g., AJA, Blackmagic, Sheer, etc.
    Please try the following:
Navigate to your Quicktime codec folder. It's found at harddisk/library/Quicktime and harddisk/username/library/Quicktime. Try dragging the entire contents from these two locations into a temporary location. I use a subfolder on my desktop. e.g. username/desktop/QuicktimeTemp
Restart After Effects and try using ProRes footage in all bit depths again. Does your problem go away? If so, it's likely an issue with one of the codecs that you have removed. You now should have enough information to isolate the codec that's causing your problems.

  • Footage Freezing on External Monitor and Timeline

    Hi,
I'm scratching my head over this. I have a Sony HD TV I am using as an external monitor to display Final Cut from by Macbook Pro (I know to get the best quality I should get a Matrox, but I can't afford it at the moment).
The macbook is hooked up to the TV via an HDMI convertor from the miniDisplay port. If I drag the canvas window onto the TV the footage (HD 720p, ProRes 422) plays fine.
However, if I try to play the footage using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview the footage freezes on both the TV and on the timeline - the audio plays fine though!
I simply cannot see why this could be happening. Does anyone have any advice - it would be very much appreciated!!

Pulled it onto a hard drive but it made no difference.
I managed to get it hesitatingly working by checking 'mirror on desktop' in audio/video prefs, but the video only plays for a few seconds then stops.
I have tried various different files and formats but they are all the same.
Unfortunately but I have to go out now but thanks for all your help so far - it seems I will have to do more head scratching and research tomorrow!

  • Spinning ball when playing ProRes footage

I'm having a problem editing Canon Mark 7 and Mark 5 footage transcoded to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) progressive, 24fps.  Every time I hit play I get a spinning beach ball for 45 seconds.
I've searched the archives for similar problems but most seem to be years ago, suggesting either conflicts in codec on the original footage or suggesting the OS or FCP were improperly installed.  That wouldn't seem to be the case with me.
This is a fairly new computer (Feb. '11) and everything was installed clean - the OS, FCP, all apps, etc.   I have four 2TB internal drives (factory installed) and I use one for my system and apps, another for capture scratch, another for project files.  I'm running OSX 10.6.7, FCP 7.0.3.  I don't allow my hard drives to sleep.  I've tried all the footage on both my internal drives and an external FireWire 800 drive.  To make the problem even more confounding, I just finished an extensive project using the same codec, frame rate, everything and didn't have any problem at all. That project was running entirely off an external hard drive connected by FireWire 800.
    Any thoughts?
    TIA,
    Peter

I don't know if this is of any help or just a coincidence but, all these messages appeared between the time that I last hit play at 1:44 and when the spinning beach ball and "Final Cut Pro (not responding) messages cleared at 1:47

  • Not possible with FCP6: HDV Footage and external TV (monitor) viewing ?

Hi all, I learned from another FCP6 forum when I'm working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire on an external monitor or TV, but ONLY as downconverted DV. This works fine but in a worse quality on my external TV. Is there really no possibility to view on an external TV via TRUE HDV via HDMI output ?

The MXO from Matrox might work OK (though it will only output HD via SDI or Component analog, no HDMI output) but I'd contact Matrox first about using a DVI adapter with the unit. It connects via a full sized DVI connection.
But quite frankly, you'd be very happy with the power of a MacPro. Especially working with HDV files. Rendering would be a lot faster, Motion and Color would also benefit from the added power of an 8 core machine... plus you can use that Kona 3 card. Best there is IMHO.
    Jerry
P.S. You are running professional software that really is desinged to be run on a professional machine like a Mac Pro...

  • "Hardware Cannot Render"  Message!!  ProRes footage.

    Hi all,
I have a brand new G5 2 x 2.26 Quad; 12Gb Ram, and 2 graphics cards (ATI Radeo HD 4870 & NVIDIA GeForce GT120) And have just recently changed from capturing/editing HDV, to ProRes.
When editing HDV I was able to process some effects no problem, but now I am getting this Render Error message - The canvas goes completely red and message says "...The Effect "***" failed to render: Your Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth!!"
I've tried a google search on this problem, and came across someone saying to change the 'Video Processing' tab to have "Render in 8-bit YUV" option. I did have it set to "render 10-bit YUV material in High Precision YUV" Gave that a go, and it didn't work. Have also come across someone saying that having 2 graphics card might be causing the trouble, and to take one out - but don't want to do that unless it's really necessary.
Can anyone help me clairfy what the problem is and if I can sort it?
    Thanks

    Hi Shane,
I don't mean to question you guys as you are undoubtedly far superior in knowledge to how this works - but I find this really hard to believe, after all, this G5 tower is only 1 month old, and I've got the only 2 graphics cards that mac currently sell on the site :
    ATI Radeon HD 4870
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
If anything, I would have thought that it could process my footage NO PROBLEM!
I hope I don't sound too cheeky in my response - as I say - I bow to your superior knowledge.
The filter in motion worked Tom, although I had to render the clip and it gone a bit sluggish (That may be to do with setting up as HDV in Motion and dragging into a Prores timeline?)

  • Cannot Vew Footage on my NTSC Monitor from FCP

I am having trouble viewing my NTSC screen for recording a project to a BETA. I have gone into EasySetup and selected both Blackmagic DeckLink NTSC 8 and 10 bit. Went into View, Vew Playback and tried selecting Blackmagic NTSC 8 and 10 bit and still cannot get the file on my NTSC monitor. My mouse will split off my screen over to it, but cannot get mov to show up over there to record into the BETA. I get sound, but no video in the recording, just a blue screen. Any thoughts

I'm working on a Mac OS X Version 10.4.10 Dual 2.5 GHz Power PC G5 with Fincal Cut Sudio Pro. A co-worker downloaded updates for our BlackMagic DeckLink. Last Friday everything was working fine. Today, it's not. I called him and he's the one who told me to go into EasySetup and select the BlackMagic DeckLink NTSC 8 or 10 Bit and everything should be back to Normal. Well, it's not, he's out of State, and I can't reach him now on his Cell. I'm not sure of the Brand of Decklink, I only now what it's called in FCP. I'm just the back up guy on this and now we have to overnight tv spots, if I can get them on a BETA.

  • Viewing footage on desktop and external monitor at same time

Maybe i'm missing something, but is there any way to view footage simultaneously on your desktop monitor and your external broadcast monitor (via blackmagic output)?
Right now when I enable mercury transmit, the viewer within speedgrade goes to grey and I can only see the footage on the external monitor.  This makes it impossible to draw custom shapes around objects (rather than just use the stock circle masks) which I use quite a bit...I would like to have the view on both monitors like I have in resolve.
If this isn't possible, is there a quick shortcut to toggle mercury transmit on and off without having to go into the settings menu?
Any help would be appreciated...I am enjoying a lot of the controls that are in speedgrade but there are some workflow hurdles that I need to get over in order to be able to use effectively in client sessions from time to time.
    Thanks!

I waited expectantly and patiently  for Adobe to enable Mercury Transmit  in SG and to be able to make use of my BM card and external monitor.
O.K we got it in CC2014.1...but it is either Mercury Transmit or  Dual Display!
I think this half-arsed solution  is an absolute fail that we cant use desktop and an  external monitor simultaneously.
Has anyone on the SG team actually been in a real world CC and Grade Suite?
At least we got consistency with the blue color scheme if not how Mercury Transmit works across the suite of apps.

  • How to send ProRes FCP footage to iDVD and get a quality result

    Hello,
I am editing on FCP5, for which I used a USB to transfer my ProRes footage. I want to use one of the themes in iDVD as a menu page for my final project, and understand that to do this I will have to export my FCP footage via QuickTime. I am worried about compromising the quality of my footage by doing this. My question is how can I then burn my final product, including the DVD menu, to disk and get the best quality result from my footage.
    Thank you!

Have a feeling it's MPEG2. I've already spent time this week rendering another part of the movie using my old editing package (Pinnacle) and saving it as a .mov file to USB and it works on FCP without a hitch- Thankfully! I'm just gutted because I know MPEG is nowhere near as good quality as ProRes but I really don't know what else to do- This is literally my first week working on a Mac, let alone FCP!

  • Footage is all white

So I installed the CC updates last week, and have a major problem with Premiere now. All footage of any kind I import shows up white. The thumbnails look fine in preview, but as soon as a clip is clicked on, opened, or hover scrubbed over, the footage turns white. Sometimes when I first start up Premiere it's a mess of giant code until I start moving the playhead around. I've attached screenshots of each instance, and notice that this in't even of actualy media, it's of the "media offline" placeholder. Literally every type of footage I import whatsoever does this. Meanwhile in CS6, everything works fine.
I'm trying a full uninstall of all my CS6 apps now to see if it fixes it, and reinstalling Premiere CC. In the meantime though, wondering if anyone else has encountered this and has a fix? Thanks.

This could be a classic problem with your video driver.
What OS are you running on?
What video card do you have?
What is the currently installed video driver?
Is that the latest one available? If not, go to the nVidia, or AMD/ATI Web site, download and install the latest - test.
Good luck, and if that does not fix things, you will have probably ruled out the video driver, as being the cause.

  • Blocky footage from ProRes 4444 file when imported in After Effects CC on Windows 7

I'm running the latest version of After Effects CC before the 2014 update.  When I bring in a ProRes File I noticed the footage had turned Blocky and Alias'd.  Extremely noticeable on black round edges, making the high quality footage look awful.
HAs anyone experienced this, or seen this before... I almost didn't notice it.

    Noticed a few things.
Still don't know if there have been any changes to the footage in the comp because none of the properties of the footage layer are revealed. Try selecting the footage layer and press the U key twice to reveal any changes made to the footage.
Not understanding the composition size at all. Why is it non standard? 1920 X 817 will NOT work for any kind of standard delivery method AND, if the footage is standard size, 1920 X 1080, the footage will be imported with a default position of 960 X  408.5 causing every pixel in the footage to be re-interpreted and cause a loss of clarity.
The properties of the original footage are not shown or known. We don't know if the footage is interlaced or what size it is or what the frame rate is.
You have not given us any information on how you are bringing ProRez footage into a Windows machine. Did you download some 3rd party software to import the footage?  If so, what has been installed?
Most likely, the problem is the placement of the footage so that the footage is not precisely lined up on the pixel grid (see item 2). Anything from Compression to 3rd party software could also be causing interpretation problems.

  • Why does Prores need to render when sequence settings match footage?

I have imported some Prores footage that plays fine in the viewer window. When I drop it in a new sequence and let it match the settings it still shows up as needing to be rendered. Any thoughts?

If you're going out to tape, yes, if you're going to a file, well, not really. You can just render a file directly out of FCP to disk without rendering the timeline. Kinda dangerous if you can't see what you're outputting. Or you can output a reference file in a couple of minutes out of FCP and put it into Compressor and do the real rendering there with a lot more control. A reference file is a quicktime, using current settings, which is NOT a self-contained movie. I have a directory of these reference files that I can use on the machine for different renders and at the same time feel free to delete. They're very quick to create. Are you running FCS3? if so Share is yet another process for exporting.

  • FCP through to External monitor....Sound fine but video is still frames

    Hi everybody
In January of this year this problem was posted by Andy D.....
+No matter what combination of settings I choose I cannot get video to play on my HD monitor only a still of the last frame shows up. When I hit play the audio is loud and clear and then when I hit stop the final frame appears on the screen.+
I have this problem but only when the material in my FCP viewer, canvas or sequence is ProRes422 (I'd converted H264s to this before importing into project)! If the project is DV or H264 material that has been rendered by FCP, it plays on the external monitor fine but it seems if we start looking at the high end stuff like ProRes, back to sound but still picture.
I might add here that the path to my external Full HD monitor is through firewire to an ADVC100 converter and then composite cables to the input of the monitor. By the way the same thing happens with an SD monitor.
I haven't tried using my video camera as the link through to the monitor instead of the ADVC100. Would this make a difference? I'd be pretty happy if someone had a solution for this.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Peter L

Unless the camera is a DVCPRO HD camera...like the HPX-170...this won't work. Not via HDV or AVCHD. Playout isn't as simple as it was with DV. There are far cheaper capture cards...Decklink Intensity Pro, Matrox MXO2 mini...but you need a MacPro for those (or with the MXO2 MIni, a laptop with an Express34 slot). An iMac is severely limited in what it can do.
    Sorry.
    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2 mini...$450...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • Preview monitor not displaying properly

i just did a clean install of leopard, then did a clean install of FCS2, and then ran all the updates. a couple days later i try to run color (which worked on this machine when i had tiger)and the preview window is very funky and not usable. i have attached a screenshot. i tried restarting, tried other clips, tried other formats- but nothing seems to get the preview to actually display the video properly.
color did work on this exact setup before i upgraded the OS. I bought anew harddrive and installed everything from scratch. i have the ati x1900 as the main card with pcie lane width set to 16 as well as an ati hd 2600xt with the lane width set to 1x. i have a mac pro with 8 gigs of ram, 8 core x 3.0ghz.
working with prorez footage. no special hardware add ons at all. sent to color command in fcp kept causing a crash as soon as i tried to playback in color (and preview monitor still didn't work).
here is a link to a screeshot of what the monitor previews.

please help- i can't use color anymore.

Colormunki is a known no-no with Color. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8640308&#8640308
Searching the forum can reveal your answers, if you use the search function.
However, a color profiler does nothing to help you with regard to consistent color when working with video. Again, you need to use a video input/output device (I sound like a blasted broken record with this) with a video display device capable of a daily setup, like a projector or a video crt or flat panel. Using computer monitors with Color is worthless.
