ProRes HD and effects refuse to render

I have a Kona LHe card and am capturing HDV into ProRes. Most everything works great, except some effects like (thresold, bloom, vinette) once they are dropped on a clip, state that "this effect won't render with your graphics card" I have never seen this before. Does anyone know what"s up?

If you've too graphic cards in your Mac Fxplug effect won't work. It's a bug to be solved by Apple.

We can not see your computer, your settings or even know what your source files are because we are not in the same room as you are!
We cant see what you are doing wrong ...so you will have to tell us a lot more and show us some screen grabs of your settings.

Imported song into After Effects CS6 and won't fully render.

I imported a song into After Effects CS6 to use audio waveforms. I click RAM preview but it won't render or play past 18 seconds. What am I doing wrong and how do I render the entire audio track so it will actually play all the way through with the effects on it.

Ram preview length is determined by the amount of available ram. It is also usually limited to the work area. Either lower the resolution of the comp window or extend the work area.

XDCam HD/Prores/DigiBeta and my head hurts!

I have been doing research and have drawn some of my own conclusions but some input from those more experienced than myself would be gratefully received.
I have a interview shot on XD Cam Disc 1080/25p winging its way to me, usually we Shoot in Digi Beta and HDV is the only HD format we have had the pleasure?!? of using thus far.
I will be hiring a XDCam reader (probably D1) so I can transfer the files.
Q1/ Do I/Can I transcode straight to Prores using Log and Transfer or do I have to do this using Compressor afterwards?
Q2/ Is it worth transcoding to Prores as this is a stand alone interview and shouldn't need to be mixed with any other footage?
Q3/ We are going to have the situation more and more where crews say "sorry no Digibeta" or "that'll cost you more". I can see my HD footage coming to be in all flavors (but hopefully 1080/25p).
Due to this I see Prores as our most likely way forward as quite often the different footage will be put into one program.
I was looking at getting a AJA io and then hiring decks depending on what the footage is shot on and go directly to Prores that way. But I understand that you might be stuck with 29.97 frame rate when playing into the AJA through HDMi?
Opinions on best workflow going forwards would be gratefully received, my head hurts.

XDCAM HD is a fully supported FCP native camera codec, no need to fear it at all ... if you like you can edit it directly in to a ProRes timeline and get full quality realtime previews, or you can edit it native and set rendering to ProRes for faster results with better potential quality if doing a lot of effects work, or you can just edit and render native ... its all very easy and has been since around FCP 5.1.2. When you've locked edit you can export as Uncompressed, ProRes or whatever other delivery codec you prefer (including XDCAM HD although that would be an odd choice).
I will be hiring a XDCam reader (probably D1) so I can transfer the files.
Not a good idea as the D1 is SD only I think ... get a U1 if you can, or rent a player "deck" like the PDW-F30 or better.

No need whatsoever to do it all (see above). But if you did want to do it anyway then you would have to do it post import ... no direct to ProRes transcode on ingest with XDCAM HD (XDCAM EX yes, XDCAM HD no).

Not worth it at all unless your goal is to hoover up disc space and man hours unnecessarily.

ProRes as intermediate is fine. As for hiring decks, if you are imagining your future needs then you should really be assuming tapeless ingest/workflows rather than anything tape based, that said an AJA Io HD (not AJA Io) would be a great device to have on hand as would Matrox MXO2 and other I/O devices ... and no, I think you have misinterpreted that frame rate restriction, its not the case at all.

Again with the Continuously Rasterize of 3D Shape Layers and Effects Problem in CS3

Hi! I have been looking into the forum for some help about this issue and although it have found a lot of related threads I really can't make this combination of features works well...
I mean I can't apply any "Distort" effect to any 3D "Shape Layer" cause finally the effect cause unexpected results (basically the effects loose his "alignment" with the layer as soon as I transform that layer even if I make a Pre-comp and apply the transformation there (cause I still need rasterization activated on it to maintain quality in zooms and scales). So, really could be a way that allow me to apply this effects to a continuously rasterized layer (or Pre-com) and it works as well as if they were applied to a Solid/Image Layer when use some kind of transformation or camera movement over it? Uf, I still really hope so...
Well, I'm now a little desperated so I'll be very grateful for any help; and sorry if I'm missing something obvious but I think I have tried all the possibilities (pre-compound and turn off 3D Layer option on both items with any combination, turn on or off rasterize option here and there too, apply the effect in the pre-comp layers or in the comp ones, etc...) and I think at this moment I start to loosing my faith...

That's completely impossible. It goes against how AE effects (and ultimately the entire render pipeline) work. I think I know what you are hoping to achieve, but it is mathematically and technically illogical. Displacment effects work on pixels, not the original vector data, anyways. Only dedicated vector effects can manipulate path contours. AE is no different than Illustrator or Freehand in that regard.
Also: whenever you change the scale of a Shape Layer, you change the size of of the vector data which is then rasterized based on the bounding box and in some cases the cropping area defined by the composition borders. Therefore the layer size would steadily increase anyways and the result of your displacement would be different for each frame - what looks okay with 5px displacment values at frame 1 would barely be noticable on a layer that is "blown up" to 10 times the size on frame 100.
So for all intents and purposes you need to work with big layers and without continuous rasterization, no matter how much you may dislike it.

Installing After Effects on headless render nodes

I'm trying to install After Effects CS5.5 render engine on a set of render nodes that don't have DVD drives (or any optical drive). I was advised to copy the install files from the DVD to the desktop via flash drive. I did that and the install starts OK but then it asks for the 2nd disc. I copied that disc's content to the desktop also but I can't get it to find it. Anyone have any thoughts?

You should be able to copy all of the files off of the disc into the same folder and it should work, but if you are having trouble, you can download the trial of CS5.5.

Perhaps you must just enable the Allow Encoding using Legacy CoDecs option in the Quicktime control panel on the network machine or else some of that may not show up. Of course make sure QT is installed correctly in teh first place, as Todd and Rick said. On a server, you may need to set special group policies for that to work, also.

ProRes LT and FireWire 800 GRaid Mini

It's been awhile since I tried to go mobile without an Sonnet F2. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB of memory. I've converted my footage to ProRes LT and put it on a G-Raid mini - 7200rpm drive. I'm coming in FW800 and still getting warnings playing back my timeline.
The footage says it's 11 MB/s...and my AJA speed test says the drive is reading and writing at over 70 MB/s.
I'm certain there's more to the equation...but what am I missing. I'm using FCP 7.0.2..only doing cuts with one stream of video. 4-tracks of audio.
Suggestions?

yeah...no render bar. Just still choking the system. I have 8GB of RAM (I know only about 2.5 are devoted to FCP) so this shouldn't be. And yep, Studio X...ALL of the footage in my project is now ProRes 422 (LT). I'd send you a pic, but you can trust me.
the other unusual thing is that when I opened the project this a.m. it spent 25 minutes writing audio and video as though some sort of export were set up.
I'm using an external monitor, but that has been the case for years...or at least months with my new MacBook Pro 17-inch.
Something else is choking it, but can't find it.
I added a timelapse today, but it was choking BEFORE that.
Would love to start over, but too much footage to bring back in.
Sequence settings are:
1280 x 720 HDTV 720p (16:9)
Aspect Ratio: Square
Editing Timebase: 59.94
QT Video Settings:
Compressor Apple ProRes 422 (LT)

3D Camera Tracker and Effects

Hello Everyone.
I have noticed when using Tracking with 3D Camera Tracker, and having effects, It dose not work well. So what we have to do when using Camera Tracker and Effects ? Maybe using a Precomp and apply Effects, and Track ?
Also, I used The Foundry Camera Tracker many times, and I noticed the After Effects 3D Camera Tracker did a better job.

The proper workflow for most tracking is to track the original shot then use the tracking information to control something else. In the case of 3D camera tracking you apply the data to a camera and position a reference layer in the scene.
In some cases, where there is a lack of detail or the tracked object can be better defined by the addition of things like Color Correction effects you would apply the effect, pre-compose or pre-render to a lossless DI and then track the modified shot. Generally you would not use this modified shot in your production, you just want the tracking data.
On rare occasions there are compression artifacts or Intra Frame compression problems with the original footage that you will only get a successful track if you render the original to a lossless DI before tracking. You also need to render a DI if your original codec is not compatible with the tracker. Mocha is very sensitive to highly comprised formats and the Warp Stabilizer (a form of tracking) and AE's other trackers may also not like highly compressed originals either.
There is also one un breakable eternal law that no one has yet found a way to circumvent. Some shots will not track with one tracker but may track with another. IOW, you may not be able to do a 3D camera Track with the Foundry's Camera Tracker, or AE's Camera Tracker but you may be able to get a successful track with Syntheyes or MOCHA Pro, or other tracker software, but some shots cannot be tracked with any software. For example, an aerial shot of the ocean from an airplane cannot be 3D camera tracked because there is no fixed geometry in the shot. A shot of a wheat field with the wheat blowing in the wind many not be able to be tracked because there is no fixed geometry in the shot, but it may be able to be stabilized if the horizon is well defined.
If you apply any distortion effects or do masking or anything else the the shot will only track if you pre-compose but the effects may throw off the final result. If you must apply effects do them after you track the shot unless paragraph 2 applies. If your track fails and you are confident that there is enough fixed geometry in the shot to track then see paragraph 3.

I purchased a movie on apple tv (via itunes, I assume...). I clicked "download available purchases" on my pc, but it's not showing up. I don't have enought space on icloud to store the movie and I refuse to pay for more storage. Any ideas?

It looks like the answer is to log out of iTunes and then back in. That allowed Rentals to show up in my Movies Library. I rebooted about three times which didn't work. I closed the application and restarted it many times which didn't work.
The solution was to log out of my username and then back in. That worked.

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.

I Just got off the Microsoft Technical Help line (Australia ph132058) and they refused to help me because I am running Win 8.1 in Bootcamp.
I have the latest Mac Book Pro Retina with a 1TB Solid State Hard drive running Win 8.1, beautiful machine, but its slower than my old MBP running windows 7 on a standard Drive.
The niggiling problem is that it seems to hang up for seven or 8 seconds on menial tasks........ like generating a new Folder or Note etc. Otherwise it runs reasonably well but not blindingly fast....
I wasn't aware Microsoft refused to help win 8.1 users on the Mac Platform........ shouldn't this Information be made more public...! Seems they are keen to drive potential Windows users away!!
Any suggestions on where I should go for help on this (Windows/Bootcamp in General) would be much appreciated ? ........ don't mind paying a reasonable price if the service is good......
I guess the wheel has turned and Microsoft are having a go at Apple again...?

I was thinking along the same lines. I installed Win 8.0 Pro and upgraded to 8.1 ........ probably a bad move.
I have bought a new 8.1 Licence but cant risk doing a complete reinstall until I have a back up machine ready. (My old MBP is getting a new hard drive) ......... so will give that a go in about a weeks time when the back up is in place. Cant risk having nothing!
When you say "Clean Install" ..... do you mean everything ..... as in Reformat the Bootcamp sector and start from scratch.?
I have a 2 TB LaCie Thunderbolt drive with my back up data on ..... is there a way to make the Reinstall process and large amount of Data transfer easy?
The reinstall is something I need to read up on. I was hoping the solution might be some kind of Tune up on the SSHD.

..... do you have any tips on screen Res on the Retina ..... I am running Windows at 125% Zoom, but the Bluetooth, power, wireless, Date Icons etc are all still tiny ...... could really do with an alternative to the old "Advanced Appearance Settings"

I have both TimeCapsule and Airport, and run two mac computers in the house on the one network. The airport often can not be found, and the signal is incredibly weak unless in the same room as the modem. Previously our signal was strong and effective.

The signal has been strong and effective previously and as far as i'm aware that nothing else in the house has changed. We have two apple computers, appletv, an ipad, 2 iphones, time capsule, and airport all running off the same network. If there is product, a configuration or program we can get to help diagnose and or solve any connectivity issue that would be awesome

The Powerline adapters mentioned by edex67 are your only hope if you cannot run an Ethernet cable.
Even if the home and office are on the same electrical circuit, you won't really know how well the Powerline adapters might work until you actually try them out at your location.
For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.

Connect the iPod to your syncing computer and restore it via iTunes. However, if iTunes asks for the unknown passcode you need to place the iPod in recovery mode and then restore the iPod from backup. For recovey mode see:
