Pros and Cons Between UNIX and Windows Servers

Hi,
Currently the business I work for runs SAP on UNIX, but there is talk of moving to Windows servers as there are more skills available in SQL.
It is our belief however, that UNIX servers are more 'stable' than Windows. We believe it would cost more in staff time if there was a transfer to Windows because of more system downtime, due to a larger amount of server updates.
I would like to know the experiences and opinions of' anyone who has made the switch from UNIX to Windows, or vice versa.
Has anyone considered moving to Windows and decided against it? What were the pros and cons?
II'm sure this is an issue that has been considered by many experts. I look forward to reading your responses.
Regards,
Luke

Thanks Michael, that thread is really useful and gives me some good information for my report.
I'm still interested in hearing more opinions on this. Is there anyone that has successfully fought off a proposed change to Windows from UNIX based on pros and cons, or vice versa? I want to hear both sides of the argument and have a really interesting, opinionated discussion in this thread.
Regards,
Luke

  • Anybody care to explain the pros and cons between chrome and safari?

    Interested in knowing whether I need to put forth the effort to learn Chrome or just stay with Safari.

    When I say taking it to the store I guess I need to share the entire story.  When I bought this new system I transferred everything from my old computer to the new one but now I cannot bring up Adobe.  Whenever something requires Adobe or Acrobat it says I must read and sign the user agreement.  I contacted Apple Care and we worked the issed for quite some time and then as a last resort he said to download Chrome and we did and the Adobe came right up using this Chrome.  Now whenever I'm working on something Chrome is trying to take over.  Wile I don't do a lot of work in Adobe if I delete Chrome I won't be able to do any.  That is why I am saying I guess I need to go to the store.  Maybe they can correst my problem with the Adobe and get rid of Chrome.  Like everbody seems to indicate it is best to be an Apple purest.

    pros and cons between the large log buffer and small log buffer?
    Many people suggest that small log buffer (1-3MB) is better because we can avoid the waiting events from users. But I think that we can also have advantage with the bigger on...it's because we can reduce the redo log file I/O...
    What is the optimal size of the log buffer? should I consider OLTP vs DSS as well?

    Hi,
    It's interesting to note that some very large shops find that a > 10m log buffer provides better throughput. Also, check-out this new world-record benchmark, with a 60m log_buffer. The TPC notes that they chose it based on the cpu_count:
    log_buffer = 67108864 # 1048576x cpuhttp://www.dba-oracle.com/t_tpc_ibm_oracle_benchmark_terabyte.htm

    I was online (on Facebook) when suddenly my coputer screen developed these little dots--uniform across it not just in a browser window--and they started flashing back and forth between blue and pink. The computer froze up and I had to reboot. It hasn't gone away and it's terribly annoying. What should I try to do?

    It may be a problem with your video electronics - possibly heat related. Shutdown the PB & leave it overnight. Then startup & see if the dots appear.

    When baltwosaid NO emphatically, that was described as CORRECT ANSWER. Ditto in the caeses of the radically different answers from  Camelotand Matt Clifton
    Could it be that CORRECT ANSWER needs better defining by Apple?
    That apart, yes, switching might involve rebooting. About the voices, well, I was the other day adding voice to a commentary in a video I was working on. There's only American English accent in SL — Lion I believe has British ones as well.
    Why not, I wondered, try to install Lion purely for academic interest, maybe with an SD card (Sandisk Ultra II, 16GB) as Tom Nelson says is possible at http://macs.about.com/od/macoperatingsystems/ss/Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X- Lion-On-Your-Mac.htm

    It's clearly not impossible, just different than you expect. Create your playlist as you want it to appear in the Current tab (meaning don't dump every single song from your library in there, just the ones you want) and then save the playlist.

  • What is the diff in term of fastness and performance between retina and last mbp version in percentage ?

    What is the diff in term of fastness and performance between retina and last mbp version in PERCENTAGE ?
    Ty to not give links i want an answer here and now by someone who knows what hes talking about.

    But old mbp is not available with ssd you have to buy the option right ?
    Anyway, outside reboot speed is there a speed difference between retina and old version in term of general processing  ?
    I have a 2009 MBP that originally came with a SATA drive. Recently, I swapped drives; now, it has 512GB SSD. In other words, you can easily increase the speed of a standard MBP. There is going to be an increase in general processing with the Retina MBPs, but the significance depends on the application. For example, booting Photoshop used to take just over 30 seconds with a SATA drive; with an SSD, it's just under 10 seconds. But controlling for the SATA vs SSD, the differences are smaller and incremental.
    Ok you speak about a diff with the retina in term of better graphics when zooming but will this advantage be relevant also on my external  giant monitors ?
    I can't answer that, so I'll leave that to someone with more expertise in this area.

  • Byte count difference between Unix and Windows

    Hi,
    I use sun.net.ftp.FtpClient to transfer files from a windows machine to a unix server.
    The transfer works fine.
    However, due to a problem I had a few days ago with the file not completing it's transfer but no side (not my FtpClient object nor the UNIX Ftp server) has thrown an exception or reported an error, I need to verify the transfer is complete.
    from the byte count I see that on my machine, the file size is 120743 bytes, and on the server side it's 121047 bytes.
    The file has 14172 records, when the last one is an empty line.
    There is a 304 bytes difference between the 2 reports.
    I downloaded the file I transferred there manually and compared the 2 and they match.
    How can I know from my program if the transfer is complete?
    Thanks,
    Omer.

    The file size isn't 304 byte, that's the difference between the 2 files.
    I use FtpClient.binary() to set the mode to binary prior to sending the file.
    The file has 14172 records which should add up to a total difference of 14172 bytes (maybe 1 or 2 more if there is a difference in the EOF), but not 304.
    here's the code:
    putClient=new FtpClient(host, port); //initialize the client object
    putClient.login(user, password);
    putClient.binary(); //set transfer mode to binary
    putClient.cd(remotePath); //change directory to the target one
    FileInputStream fileIn=new FileInputStream(sourcePath + File.separator + sourceFileName);
    long fileSize=fileIn.getChannel().size(); //get the size of the file
    TelnetOutputStream telnetOut=putClient.put(remoteFileName);//acquire an input stream from the server
    byte[] byteBuff=new byte[8192]; //8 kb buffer
    int readSuccesfull=0;
    while((readSuccesfull=fileIn.read(byteBuff))!=-1){ // now transfer the file
    telnetOut.write(byteBuff, 0, readSuccesfull);
    totalByetsSent+=readSuccesfull;
    fileIn.close();//release the file stream resource
    TelnetInputStream inStream = putClient.list(); // acquire a stream for verifying the file was received
    /* now I read the lines of the list() command and parse the lines for the size and date and I get that the file that I sent has a size of 121047, and the line that represents it is this:
    -rwxrwxrwx   1 owner    group          121047 Jan 10 17:49 ivory.txt
    However, the size from my machine's report is 120743 which I get from the fileSize variable*/According to what has been said here, and to my intuition, the size on UNIX should be smaller than the size on Windows, but yet, it's not the case.
    This would add up fine if the file that I downloaded from the server wouldn't match the file that I sent, but they do.
    I'm pretty much a noob at developing and even more a noob at Java, so there is a very good chance that I do something wrong here, could be with the use of the FileChannel.size() method usage.
    Thanks.

  • Pros and Cons between BEx client and Web access

    Dear all,
    I am quite new to BI 7.0 and have some question about frontend tools.
    I am looking for a comparison material describing pros and cons of BEx client application and Web access in BI 7.0.
    There are many tools in BEx suite and I am a bit confused about what fuctionality each tool has or what to consider to choose the right tool.
    Thanks a lot in advance and appreciate any input.
    Regards,

    Hello,
    Shortly speaking there are 4 tools and you need at least 2 of them:
    1. Query Designer: you need it always as this is a tool for defining queries
    2. Web Application Designer: you need it if you want create web reports
    3. Report Designer: only if you want create formatted reports in web
    4. BEx Analyzer: if you want to run queries in Excel (Analyzer is an add-in)

  • Pros and Cons between Dynamic Hierarchy Editor and Ownership Input Template

    Hi All,
    We are in the process of deciding whether to use Dynamic Hierarchy Editor or Ownership Input Template for ownership application.
    If you have any information about the pros and cons for the two items, would you mind to share with us, for example from maintenance point of view, functionality point of view, or the possibility to simulate the change of ownership structure and/ or consolidation method and its effect to the consolidated BS, PL and CF.
    Thanks in advance,
    Liam

    Hi Liam,
    From our last project, there is no differences in making ownership from  template or dynamic hierarchy. Because both of data will appear in template or dynamic hierarchy.
    If you change hierarchy in dynamic hierarchy editor , the changes will appear in ownership input template and vice versa.

  • Pros and cons of EPM and Classic Application.

    Hi All Experts,
    can any one tell me what are the pros and cons if create EPM Application
    and pros and cons if we create Classic Planning Application
    this is really urgent we have to submit this to our client as soon as possible

    Hi,
    The main difference between using of classic and EPMA is I think hidden in the first letter of EPMA. EPMA is for Enterprises where multiple performance management applications are considered applicable. When you have an HFM application, a planning application, a performance scorecard application, a couple of essbase cubes around and lots of reports pulling data from all these, sharing data and metadata becomes crucially important. And no mistake, classic planning is as good as EPMA planning and easier to handle, however, if your company or client is thinking of having a total EPM solution in place, then EPMA is the right choice. However, since you can always convert your classic app to EPMA but you've got only one bullet to fire, it might be wise to stick with classic application until your client/company starts imagining that sort of ambitious goal.
    Cheers,

  • Pros And Cons of Subforms and Groups?

    Does anyone know of any pros and cons related to how things are grouped, either via an object group or a subform? Are there any specific reasons to use groups and not subforms - subforms and not groups?
    For those who care to know a little more, not just questions...
    In designing my forms I have taken this approach:
    Groups (created by selecting Layout > Group) - I use groups for grouping simple objects (Text, Lines, Rectangles, etc.) which build the "static" portion of the form.
    Subforms (created by drawing, or "wrapping" objects together) - I use Subforms for field objects (Text Fields, Numeric Fields, Decimal Fields, Check Boxes, Radio Buttons, Date/Time Fields, etc.) which act as the "live" or "dynamic" portion of the form.
    I like this way of organizing the objects. It seems to make "sense" at least to me, and it also helps in terms of aligning objects, and so on. However, of course, it is not necessary to segregate the objects this much. So what is the preferred or recommended method? All opinions or suggestions are welcome!

    Actually, there's a big difference between using groups and subforms to relate objects to each other although if you don't use any scripting and/or data binding, you probably wouldn't notice much difference.
    Once you get into scripting and/or data binding, the use of groups and subforms makes a significant difference because groups (which are actually <area> XFA objects) are "invisible" when it comes to scripting and data binding.
    This means that if, on a page, you had 4 text fields, each named TextField1/2/3/4, and TextField1/2 were grouped while TextField3/4 were wrapped in a subform (named "Subform") and you needed to access these text fields from the context of the page, you would do:
    TextField1 OR TextField2
    because they're grouped with an <area> tag which is transparent in the Object Model. If, on the other hand, you needed to access the 3rd and 4th text field, you would do:
    Subform.TextField3 OR Subform.TextField4
    because subforms are defined in the XFA Scripting Object Model.
    The use of groups and subforms also affects data binding. That is, it affects the way XML data imported into your form is used to populate values of fields. For instance, if your data looked like this:
    <data>
    <TextField1>1</TextField1>
    <TextField2>2</TextField2>
    <TextField3>3</TextField3>
    <TextField4>4</TextField4>
    </data>
    and your form had TextField1/2 grouped into a group named "Group", TextField3/4 wrapped into a subform named "Subform" and then another TextField3/4 which were siblings to the Subform and Group objects but placed
    prior to the Subform object in the object hierarchy, importing the above data into the form would populate TextField1/2 in the Group object and TextField3/4 which are siblings to the Group and Subform objects -- not TextField3/4 which are wrapped in the Subform object.
    Now let's say your data was as follows:
    <data>
    <TextField1>1</TextField1>
    <TextField2>2</TextField2>
    <Subform>
      <TextField3>3</TextField3>
      <TextField4>4</TextField4>
    </Subform>
    </data>
    This would result in populating TextField1/2 in the Group and, as opposed to the first scenario, TextField3/4 which are wrapped in the Subform object.
    This is a very simple example to prove a point. If you think about it a little, the implications -- especially concerning data binding -- are quite large. To help illustrate this further, I've attached a sample form with the hierarchy I described earlier as well as two data files: data1.xml is the first one I described in this post, while data2.xml is the second one. Try importing both into the form to see the differences in the results and then compare the object hierarchy in the Hierarchy palette with the nesting of the data nodes in the data files.
    Finally, there's also the fact that subform instances can be created and deleted dynamically at runtime while groups cannot have instances. For dynamic forms, this is a big consideration.

    Hi all,
    I need to configure a connection between PI (unix box) and a windows server using File Adapter (both sender and receiver).
    My doubts are:
    - Which is preferable type of conection: NFS or FTP?
    - Which are the advantages and disadvanteges of both?
    - Most important: Which are the prerrequisites for both ways? Such as installing server ftp, or mounting folders, OS configuration, security config. Etc. etc.
    I will apprettiate if you could also post a direct link to documentation.

    Hi,
      NFS: when the file folder is available on the XI Server
    FTP: when it is at remote
    If the Sharing folder is in the same XI system then NFS..If the sharing folder is in different system it is FTP.
    we will use NFS when we required to poll the files from local machines.and we will use FTP when we required to poll the data from the FTP server which are in the remote side or outside of the firewall
    FTP (file transfer protocol) here you are getting data from ftp server or you are writing to FTP server.
    NFS is used when your XI can access the file location directly using the NFS protocol.
    When the File System can be access using FTP protocol, then you need to use FTP and provide the FTP server details and user crendentials to pull data from the File Server.
    NFS is used when you want XI to use the NFS protocol to access thye location of the file.
    FTP is File Transfer Protocol and is used when your Sender SYstem is using an FTP system to send / receiver files.
    we are using NFS when we required to poll the files from local machines..
    We are using FTP when we required to poll the data from the FTP server which are in the remote side or outside of the firewall..
