Pros and cons for transport management in XI

Hi experts,
Among the several tools proposed by SAP to manage transports (File Export, import tool, CMS and CMS tracks, CTS+), do you know have any pros and cons from SAP as to what is the preferred approach, the industry learnings...? What is better to use and in which case ?

Actuall it all depends on the business process.
I will explain the answer to you through a practical example
like Ford, it has sales and services all across globe.
It is not advisable to manage all of its activities under only one sales organization, say Ford Inc.
So what it does is de-centralises the whole process according to the country, region so that the whole process is divided and hence can be managed more effeciently.
Hope this helps you in understanding the basics.
One sales org always provides you with very less data to update and maintain, while many sales org makes the scenario more complex.
One sales org always gives you the flexibility to bring any changes to the current scenario, while in multiple sales org to bring a change its a tiresome job.
These are some of the advantages and disadvantages of one to many sales org.

Pros and cons for sharing ASM home

Had a question on RAC with ASM...the ASM home is using the DB home...i mean ASM is sharing DB home...how bad can this be ???...i do not have a ASM home or it was never created...So how can this be resolved...or can i still use the db home for my ASM home??? what are the pros and cons for this ??

So you are telling me that, if this 3 node RAC
cluster which only have 1 database should be
fine..and what about when its come to patching ???
any big problems on that ???If the ASM needs to be patched, the database probably needs to come down. If the database needs to be patched, the database probably needs to come down.
These are true whether the ASM is in the same home or not.
The challenge comes when you have 2 or more databases (2 DB instances). If the ASM goes down for patching, both DBs probably come down.
But if only one DB needs to be patched, and the Home is ALSO the ASM Home, both DBs come down.
So separating ASM home and DB home is irrelevant when one DB is used, but is very relevant when multiple DBs are used and each DB has it's own ORACLE_HOME.

Pros for posting videos to YouTube are:
Viewers of your video wouldn't be using up your limited .Mac data transfer allowance.
Once your site is published, if subsequently you have to do a +Publish All+ from iWeb, you wouldn't be uploading your video yet again to .Mac ~ saving time and usage of your limited .Mac data transfer allowance.
YouTube videos have a wide audience and popular features such as ratings, playlists, comments, etc.
Cons for posting videos to YouTube are:
Limitations on size and quality of videos and their unappealing presentation style. For example, compare YouTube's presentation style and limited size options with that of a +.Mac Web Gallery+:

Please use this thread to point out what you like/dislike about your new iphone. Apple Engineers frequently browse through these forums to see what they can do to improve their line of products. Let's tell them exactly what's on our minds. I'll start with the bad.
Cons:
The iPhone is all the hype Apple has created it to be but not at all a smartphone. Here are some basic features that the Iphone doesn't have that I believe should be added to the iPhone (via software update) considering that most, if not all, smartphone/pdas include it.
No Cut and Paste
No Highlighting
No Search Window for "Contacts"
No Way to send one SMS to multiple recipients
No way to update your "Contacts" while on a phone call (I can't add a phone number while on phone call)
No Excel or Word programs. (Every professional uses these programs)
No Cursor Arrows (to navigate through a reply window for emails-magnifying glass is nice but the small text window allowed makes it very difficult to move around)
I was under the impression that the iphone was to be a replacement or a competitor to similar PDA's on the market but without the basic features listed above, it comes well short of being smart. A cool dumb jock with some fancy tricks is more like it. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash Apple by any means...I have two iPods, two Macs and now my iphone at home so I am definately a dedicated Apple customer and will continue to be so. I am simply voicing my concerns because frankly I expected much much more from Apple and Steve Jobs.
The following below features would be nice as well (but I could wait till next year:
Video Recording, flash and zoom for the camera
Full youtube access
Memory Upgrade availability (memory card) or more memory
Option to upgrade to a better battery not a built in battery
Option to be able to choose what's in your homepage
Pros:
I can't believe how Apple is doing some of the technology that I'm actually seeing especially in a handheld. I love the ease of use. I love the backlight...even with low backlighting it's trully amazing how the colors are displayed. I have music videos loaded on my iphone and I am just in awe of the clarity and quality. The design, I feel, is second to none to any phone on the market today or in the past. I also like the fact that some accessories of the iPod and iPhone are interchangeable. The customer service at the Apple Store (Roosevelt Field Long Island, NY) was absolutely flawless. The lines, if any, went so smoothly. The staff answered everyone all of my questions. The whole buying process was very organized. I was in and out of the store in no more than 10 min. I expected far far worse with the high demand and excitement about last Friday's launch.
In Conclusion:
I think the iPhone comes short to my old Pocket Pc (Cingular 8525) as far as practical functions out of the box. The iPhone is far cooler than my 8525 but if I had a choice I would have stayed with my 8525 until Apple added the basic features I stated above. If I'm coming from a standard phone the iPhone blows it away but if I'm transitioning from a smart phone, the iPhone isn't yet in the same league. It's only been a week with my iphone so I'm sure they'll be more good and bad that I still need to discover. At this point I would say pocket pc "1" and iPhone ".5". If Apple adds my above listed basic features than I would have to place the iPhone over the pocket pc all the way!!! I'm not worried though...if Apple doesn't add those features I'm sure a third party company will. I hope you guys are reading;)

Pros and cons for having multiple AP3 libraries?

Hi,
Since I'm shooting in RAW, my Aperture 3 library is increasing in size quite fast. It's up to 78GB now (including my old iPhoto library) and I have just 120GB available on my MacBook Pro disk now.
I'm not too happy about moving away from RAW to JPEG, so maybe I should look into splitting my AP3 library into two or three libraries? The biggest downside I can see is that I'm no longer able to search for, e.g., "all pictures taken in this area with this lens" since the pictures may be split over several libraries.
Any other ideas? I'd prefer not having AP3 on an external drive since it's my laptop and I move it around alot.

The biggest Con is that each Library is discrete and cannot be searched from another.
Sooner or later you're going to have to put a Library (or two) on an external drive. The math is pretty irresistible I have a couple of portable drives - not much bigger than a cigarette packet and bus powered.

If I replace the default user template (*.iproj) by my own, is it really a bad idea?
Am I better modifying the existing one (.plist) even if it is more work?

While you can modify the default User Template, it is not a recommended practice to do so. Since you are managing clients via MCX, anything that you set in WGM for user preferences will be added to the user's profile at login. If you have a need for some specific application preferences that need to be added for users, configure the application on a workstation as a local user and then import the .plist into WGM. Anything else -folders or files- that an application creates in the local user prefs folders, that may be needed, can usually be placed in the /Library/Preferences, /Library/Application Support, and /Library/Managed Preferences folders on the clients so that users have access to them.

depending on your situation you can probably think of different answers. You ask for a 'general' rule of thumb... well, some things that pop into my mind:
- different usage by applications. e.g. you have a transactional application storing and modifying data and you also want to do analytics. You might want to build a seperate database/datawarehouse that you can use for analytics. by splitting it up you can tune both databases to work best with the application using it.
- sensitive data and many different users. e.g. the marketing department does not need to have access to the finance department's data (salaries, etc). give each department a separate database and only load the data needed/give access to the data needed.
Just some thoughts, you can think of more when confronted with a certain situation.

Same SID for QA & Prd systems - pros and cons?

We have the foll systems:
1. Enterprise Portal 7.0
2. NWDI 7.0
3. NW 7.0 (with XECO - Ecommerce)
4. TREX 7.1
5. Content Server 6.40
6. ECC 6.0
Currently the QA and Prd systems have the same SID and system/instance no, although they are on different hosts.
We would like to know what are the long term pros and cons for keeping the QA and Prd SIDs the same for all systems.
We are already making a list, so thought we might as well get more inputs from the community too.
We already have this arrangement for the past 3 months and have not faced any major issues.
A couple of cons though:
1. Cannot use solman as it cannot distinguish between the diff servers with same SID
2. ABAP transports from QA to Prd have to be manually done (cannot use STMS)

Hi Manoj,
Changing the SID of java systems is a very tedious procedure. Hom sys copy is just a part of the SID change...there are a whole lot of configs to be done after that...the task is eq to a new setup of systems
For once, the efforts put in are huge..you can see there are 5 systems..besides, it will involve coordination from all teams - basis, development, functional, project management.
Here are a few advantages that we know of:
1. No efforts reqd to change back to original SID
2. During disaster recovery, we just have to restore the production database on QA and change the hostname, whereas its not so in case of having diff SIDs
3. For end-users this will be transparent because they will be using the hostname in the URL which is anyways different
We have the same SIDs for the past 3 months and have not seen major issues, but we also would like to know from the long term perspective if there are any risks that we have not foreseen...hence we seek help from the community.

Pros and Cons not determining / having a Delivery Plant in Sales Order?

Here I have come-up with one more (weired?) requirement from my client.
We have two plants manufacturing same product and supplying to all customers (some time in same sales order with two different line items).
At the timeof creating a sales order, marketing does't know from which plant the material will move and hence they don't want to fill the Delivering Plant field (VBRP-BUKRS at Shipping tab) for each Item.
They are insisting me to map it as above though I had explained about various pros and cons for not determining a mandatory delivery plant
in sales order like the requirements and shipping stuff.
Yet, yet they want this.
Has anyone come across this kind of requirement before? What best you had done for that?
Can I ask you what are the Pros and cons on not having a Delivery Plant at Sales Order level?
what if I could determine it Delivery level?
Any comments, suggestions, replies and advices are taken humbly.

i would like to know the advantages /disadvantages of using email sending package from oracle 8.1.6
compared to sending the same using say perl or php.
iam developing a site in php/oracle8.1.6 , in which iam supposed to create a payement module.whenever a user
register(for free trial or subscribing the site) i'll have to send him a welcoming mail.In addition to this iam also supposed to find out wether subscribers are paying cash at right time and if not send them reminder mails and other for related scenarios . i can do the same in Perl or PHP.but if iam not gaining much(say based on server performance or load) then i think i can go ahead with oracle package. when i tested it i found that its slow . what about the load that it may cause for the server (ours is linux ).

Pros and Cons of Application Isolation/Multiple server instances?

Hi. I'm setting a new server using ColdFusion Enterprise with Apache to migrate several web application from and old server with ColdFusion 7 server. In addition, I'm also doing research regarding application isolation to have separate production application in separate servers. I'm trying to identify all pros and cons for both "Application Isolation" and "Multiple Server Instances" to make a decision on whether I will proceed in applying these techniques. I have found several links that talk about some of the advantages but have not been able to find anything regarding possible disadvantages. Have anyone in this forum has used any of the techniques, and can provide more information/experiences regarding the pros and cons?

Whether to go for Multiserver instances or Single server, is totally a user requirement based decison. If a user has Single website, or multiple websites (of the same nature, in terms of functionality), usually the part of same domain, then they would go for Single sever installation. One single instance will handle the requests from all the websites (if there are multiple). There would not be a clustering/failover setup within ColdFusion and can use the ColdFusion Standard or Enterprise version.
On the other hand, if a user has multiple websites, all with different functionality and have multiple applications (may or may not) running, then they can go for Multiserver installation. Each website can be configured with individual instances. Clustering can be done within ColdFusion if needed. One would need an Enterprise license of ColdFusion for the same.

Well, in most of the examples I've seen on the net people use "...extends JFrame"Well, I'm probably one of the bigest offenders (in this forum at least)
google "composition vs inheritance", you'll most likely find some good reads Not know the difference between the two (I'm a problem solver, not a designer), I figured I should take up the challenge.
So one of the first links I read said:
Object composition and inheritance are two techniques for reusing functionality in object-oriented systems
So I'm thinking how do you reuse a JFrame? Maybe if you build the frame with a menu bar or toolbar you could reuse some of the components but you don't reuse the entire frame. So it seems to me that the reuse aspect of inheritance or composition doesn't apply.
Next link I read said:
Make sure inheritance models the is-a relationship
Now this makes sense to me. Lets say I'm creating a MineSweeper Game. Lets create a class with the following signature:
public class MineSweeper extends JFrameThis obviously does not follow the is-a relationship rule. MineSweeper is-a Game, not a JFrame.
So, I guess I'll have to update all my examples to use composition, so I don't mislead others on the forum.
