Pros and cons of personal messaging.
As learned from why users cannot send private messages to each other? personal messaging is currently disabled, but OTN staff apparently hopes to enable it in the next two weeks for users who are following each other (it probably means based on accepted Friend relationships).
For what it's worth, here is a list of Pro's and cons, including suggestions and alternatives collected from the mentioned discussion.
Unless there is anything wrong with my collection of cons, I cannot see or think of any pro.
Cons
Pros
A PM requires the prior acceptance of a Friend invitation to protect from spam and unsolicited messaging. It does not protect from unsolicited content.
OTN is as a safe and trusted environment and PM may attract or increase the risk of manipulation or fraudulent activity.
PM falls under the jurisdiction of OTN and can therefore be abused to challenge a victim to break the terms of use.
Rejecting or ignoring a Friend invitation could be considered personal and rude.
PM is not possible if someone does not qualify as a Friend, which can restrict personal messaging based on personal status and spoil the use of the feature.
PM may attract to solve technical problems on a private basis outside the public view and thereby defeat the purpose of the community.
Suggestions
Alternatives
Ability to enable or disable PM or Friend invitations on a general level in the user account preferences. A requester should receive a notice when such a feature has been disabled on a general basis.
Provide an optional email address field in the user profile, different from the login name, where people can find and expect personal contact information.
Dude, you list all those things as Cons, but many are purely subjective views of your own.
1.A PM requires the prior acceptance of a Friend invitation to protect from spam and unsolicited messaging. It does not protect from unsolicited content, though that is the same as any interaction on the internet. Whether you consider this a Con or a Pro is purely subjective. The need to be 'friended' first before being able to PM, provides a level of protection from unwanted PM's.
2.In rare cases the ability for people to PM may result in people manipulating others or using it for potentially fraudulent reason, however in most cases, like any other forum with PM features, it's just used by people who want to share something with a friend privately. The risk of manipulation and fraud is not proven to be greater through PM than through any other interactive media. The requirement to 'friend' before PMing allows people to only receive PM's from people they feel they are comfortable with, and if they don't like something they have the ability to 'unfriend' and prevent further contact.
3.If people feel they are being abused etc. via PM's they can raise their issue with the moderators/admin who will no doubt be able to look into the issue (or certainly admin should be able to)
4.Rejecting or ignoring a Friend invitation could be considered personal and rude by some people, but then anything people say on the forums can be taken by some to be rude. That's a personal subjective opinion, and the same anywhere on the ineternet. Just because a person believes it doesn't make it true. As taught in Buddhism, a person does not make you angry, the anger comes from within yourself.
5.Just as easily, the use of the forums could be 'spoiled' for people contantly receiving unsolicited PM's from people, if they didn't have to 'friend' them first. The restriction to just allow PM's for friends, allows individuals greater personal control over who they wish to be in contact with.
6.If people didn't have to 'friend' first then yes, some people would certainly try and use PM's to contact experts or others to try and get their technical issues solved off-forum, and even with the friend restriction, there's a possibility that some may still try that. The individual, however, has the choice to ignore such requests or reply to tell the person to post their issue on the forum, or maybe they're happy to provide free private support... that's a personal choice. I can't imagine most experts will be happy to just deal with people's issues off-forum (based on previous years on the forum where people have requested experts email addresses and be told to just post their issue on the forum). So, PM's could certainly 'attract' the idea that people can try and get private support, but those people are likely to be newbies and would most likely be told where to go.
However, I do agree that your suggestion would be a feasible option, allowing people to choose whether they wanted the friend and PM features enabled via a profile setting, though I do sense you are over-reacting (meant nicely) about people may consider it rude to have their friend request ignored/rejected. The ability to accept/reject/ignore friend requests does act as a kind of, more granular, method of enabling/disabling the PM feature... you get to choose who you want to have it enabled for.
As for the forum rules, that's a good point, and I hope moniquevdb-Oracle and her team will consider setting out the rules, not just for members, but also for the moderators, so that we can take on board any reports of abuse etc. and know whether they need raising. Certainly, a common rule on most forums in respect of PM's is that private messages are private and should not be posted on the public forum, and usually only the site administrators have access to look at such messages against individual profiles where a complaint has been raised.

Neptune for UI development Pros and Cons
Hi ,
we are evaluating neptune for UI development for what are the pros and cons of using neptune.
i see only that webdynpro abap developer can be easily moved to neptune , some javascript knowledge is still required.
some question
1) can neptune make calls to odata services ? do that requires code in javascript or ABAP
2) any accelerators provided by neptune like for workflow scenarios , list and details .
3) can sap standard fiori apps extensibility or modification is possible through neptune
4) security if its accessing business functionality directly
regards
YashpalHi Yashpal,
I will give you my view, but as Robbe says I work for the company and other SAP developers like DJ Adams has other development tool preferences than me ( I call his Sublime Text development spaghetti coding and he sees Neptune as a crutch that restricts a developer's freedom but this is just a friendly point-of-view discussion and I have promised him a beer in Walldorf next time our paths cross there)
So the important message is that SAP has opened up their platform for different development tools and it is now a choice for the individual developer or SAP customer. This is a fantastic move by SAP and I think a bit overlooked by the community, Look at the new Xamarin partnership as an example (and yes they are a competitor, but I did mention them )
Now the pros of Neptune are in my opinion:
ABAP developer friendly development (removed 90% of JavaScripting needed)
Connected to the SAP transport System (Software Logistics as is)
Drag Drop designer that gives structured code (easy for a new developer to take over code, compared to the spaghetti provided by DJ <- I'll need to buy a few extra beers for that remark)
Native json communication provided by the Neptune Server (you can argue all you want about Odata, our solution is more flexible gives incredible performance and superb and easy to use offline capabilities)
Integration with Adobe build, use an SAP program to generate hybrid apps (The average ABAP developer does not install cordova and build hybrid apps - with Neptune he/she does)
Integration with SMP. Automatic connection with the REST API's of SMP both on-premise and in the Cloud
Reduced time to market. One of the largest SAP implementation partners in the Nordics stated that Neptune reduced development time by 80%
Free templates (Advanced templates such as fully functional PM, HCM, SD templates are available Experience | Neptune Software <- sorry for the marketing but you did ask)
UI5, all of the other third-party tools (Not SAP tools like App Builder, Eclipse etc) uses non UI5 frameworks. I personally believe that SAPUI5 (UI5) is the future of SAP UX and thus it only makes sense to keep a common and future-proof framework.
Network crunching. We optimize all networking. Which makes sense for mobility.
no extra infrastructure needed - it is a certified add-on and takes 15 mins to install.
Works with most versions of SAP. We even have alot of customers using 4.7 (we need the ICF so nothing lower). This is something the community often forgets. Yes it is cool to play with the latest Netweaver release, but do our customers have that installed?
Cons (woot!)
Cost, even if Neptune is very affordable it still requires license for productive usage (free for developers though - and hey we need to live as well ) So custom coding is cheaper in respect to license (but not in TCO in my opinion)
Generated code, even if we have added as much freedom to code custom JavaScript as possible there will always be restrictions in generated code compared to notepad. (But I haven't met an issue that couldn't be solved by custom coding in the Neptune Application Designer yet)
Other backend systems. Neptune is based on ABAP and as such it obviosly works best with an ABAP backend.
.... (Add stuff from other non Neptune ppl )
Regarding your questions:
1. Yes you can use Odata, best way is to consume it on the ABAP level, but you can of course consume it through JavaScript as well (Not recomended by me)
2. Yes see above (free templates and also premium templates by our partners)
3. No you can't modify a fiori app with Neptune, but the two solutions work perfectly together (You can add Neptune apps in the Fiori launchpad) One of our partners have created an RDS solution based on both Fiori and Neptune.
4. Neptune is an add-on to Netweaver and as such has no extra security in itself beyond that (And we seek not to do that). But we support any security you wish to add on top. I strongly advice having a look at the SAP Secure offering (App protection and MDM) as well as SMP (also the new Cloud edition which gives easy affordable protection for your backend)
So that was my very biased answer

Pros and cons of changing DNS servers?
Hello guys, First of all I am a non technical person related to DNS servers. So I want to know what are the pros and cons if you change your DNS servers?
I wanted to access Netflix but its not yet available in my country so I came across http://unotelly.com/ . They provide a method to access but by changing DNS. Can someone guide should I do it? What are the pros and cons? Thank youThe DNS is what translates in and outgoing URLs to your local domain server. Changing it may have no adverse effect. It could result in faster or slower translations, but you may not even notice either. However, if it does not work properly, then you will not get web sites in your browser until you revert back to a DNS that you know works or delete all added DNS entries which returns to the system default.

Hi All,
I would like to pros and cons of BPM.
Performance point of view,
and Maintenance point of view.
Please give me suggestion, <u>when should i use/avoid BPM?</u>
Thanking you in advance.
Regards
PiyushHi Piysuh,
Just to summarize what I have ubndertood of your scenario.
You do not want the JDBC adapter to be connected to your Database always and so , you will be using a DUMMY file, and when the file is picked up, you want to perfrom your DB look up and then perfrom an RFC call.
This can be implemented as follows without a BPM.
1. File Adapter to Receive File.
2. A mapping such that the DB lookup is perfromed in the mapping program ( user defined function or java mapping ), there is a <a href="/people/siva.maranani/blog/2005/08/23/lookup146s-in-xi-made-simpler">Blog</a> available on how to perfrom DB lookup in your mapping on SDN.
3. map the data picked from your datbase to your RFC request message and use an RFC receiver adapter.
Think this might help. Do let us know if you need any further help.

IF the Primary database goes down how can i bring the Secondary UP?
in this case i assume it is a failover...
Since STBY has a different database name how does the end user connects to the standby?
Do i need to change the APPserver configurations and tnsnames.ora or ORacle will handle it
Thanks to Syed Jaffar hussain(The Human Fly) for the documents he has provided

Approach for O365 mails (pros and cons of both)
Hi Team - What is the right approach to access seamless, flawless emails of O365 in our laptops having Mavericks OS and MailMail . Is Office 2011 for MAC the right choice or should we stick to native MailMail for O365 mails (pros and cons of both).
We attempted with native messaging client but are facing lots of issues related to synchronization, delay, missouts etc... & we are not sure if we shift our users to Office 2011 for MAC, that will fix up the issues.
Please advise..
Best regards,Database Register in two way :
1.) Static Instance Registration
2.) Dynamic Instance Registration
** Static Instance Registration:
add the entries in $ORACLE_HOME\NETWORK\ADMIN\listener.ora file or by using the GUI
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = xx.xx.xx.xx)(PORT = 1521))
)When you check Listener status --> unknown because no mechanism to guarantee that the specified status even exists.
**Dynamic Instance Registration
or service registration , registration is performed by the PMON process an instance background process of each database and doesn't need any configuration in the listener.ora

For those who are running FROYO let's have a pros and cons thread so some of the others who are on the fence about running it will get a little more info. And PLEASE don't include any links, instructions, etc. and hopefully the VZW folks will allow it to stay as an informative thread only.
Pros:
Little more responsive
Flash 10.1
Choice of unlock screens, pin, password,or current ones.
Google Search is back (still includes Bing as well).
Cons:
Battery life not as good as 2.1 (on my device anyway).
Warranty may be voided, not official VZW yet.
Can't get it over the air, which I personally don't care for anyway. Have had a couple bad experiences with OTA in the past.
These are a few I can think of at the moment.gsp10 wrote:

That's because apple only gives you one storage area so all of your apps, music, videos, etc are there. On Android, most of the memory heavy content will be on the sd card and not the internal storage. I could see the internal storage filling up if you have NFS Shift, Madden and a bunch of other games of that size but then you most likely just have your phone filled up with a bunch of crud that you never use.

Pros and cons of updating firmware 1.01.03 to 1.11.01 on Zen Micro
I have a Zen Micro 5.0 gb unit with original firmware of .0.03. It works fine with no problems except for the 24 hour standby time. I use Red Chair Notmad software to add or delete mp3's and drag and drop worksreally well for me. If I update the firmware to ..0 I can eliminate the24 hour standby time and cut it down to the 4 hour time. If I do this will I run into any of the problems that I read about in this forum when people update to the latest firmware of 2.2.02, or will I stillhave a steady, reliable firmware with the .0.0 with the addition of the 4 hour standby? Also can I still use the red Chair Notmad software(the latest version) and it still work like my current firmware? Please give me your pros and cons about this. Thanks a lot,?Jim
There are no real cons. ..0 is very stable.
I use Notmad with it and it works great. However, now that Creative has made an MTP driver for pre-Windows XP machines, the 2.x series firmware looks like a decent alternati've, though I haven't tried it.Message Edited by Lyle_JP on 03-23-2006:56 AM -
Pros and Cons of Turning CE On or Managment Of Global Employees.
Hi Guys,
We have a requirement where we have to deal with the employees those holds two jobs, those can be in a different country or within the same country. We have a option to go with concurrent employment or we can go towards the old functionality of managment of global employees concept. My Question here is very specific to what are the pros and cons in both the scenarios. If some one can elaborate it a little or any documentation is available to compare both the plans.
Any answers would be highly appreciated. Thanks
Regards.Hi Hassan,
We are currently working to implement Management of Global Employees (MGE).
Check out http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/22/e15a287d14f74c853f4bf8ab5fd4b1/frameset.htm and http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/a8/3300b1e299cd4c9fa78c8ad4aab007/frameset.htm
for details.
Remember, before implementing by activating CCURE GLEMP or CCURE MAINS, you must contact Michael Wulf at SAP via an OSS Note.
MGE is the functionality to handle various assignments between countries for employees so that the employee could be paid and/or have benefits in each country. It also enables additional infotypes to track the preparation and process of the global assignment.
Concurrent Employment (CE) is designed so that one individual can have multiple assignments within one country, with different pay rates, benefits, etc. Example is a school administrator who works 40 hours and then at night is an adjunct instructor for the school. If concurrent pay is activated, that individual could be processed in two different payrolls at different pay dates, but the system knows it is one person for taxes, SSN deductions, etc.
So really CE and MGE are two different functionalities to meet different requirements, but they each utilize the same foundation - the Person ID and an individual having more than one PERNR.

What are the pros and cons of
1) choosing to use the SAME
Apple ID for iCloud services on one side, and
purchases on the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore, on the other side; or
2) to have and use two separate Apple Ids for these "two sides"?
P.S.
I have loads and loads of free podcasts in iTunes in my iMac, that are certainly more thant the 5 gigas the iCloud provides for free, so I don't want those to go to the cloud. But this is perhaps a different question...
Also need to mention that I have itunes on a mac, a pc and an iphone.
Sorry to look so silly with this question, but I don't get the "big picture".You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

What are the Pros and Cons while joining tables at DF and Universe level
Hi Experts,
I am new to Data federator designer. I need help on the below.
Could you please let me know the Pros and Cons while joining the source tables in data federator
And While joining the DF target tables in universe designer.
Regards,
GanaHi,
1. I have created target tables based on source tables with one to one mapping and then join all target tables in universe.
Ex: Source tables: Infocube text tables, fact tables and 3rd party data base table
Target tables:Target tables are same as source tables
--- Yes this is the way to create target Tables and join them in the universe. These target Tables gives you the flexibility like in future your requirement is to add one more object based on some calculation which is not possible in the universe so that time you can create one more column in the target table and do the calculation. at the same time if you are using source table you can not do anything.
2. Created single target table with all objects of source tables and merged all sources tables data.
Ex: Source tables: Infocube text tables, fact tables and 3rd party data base table
Target table: Single table.
--- This is bit complex structure to merge all tables data in the one target table.in this situation you have to put more efforts and it is more complex.basically this type of target table is useful when you are merging data by multiple source into single or creating one target table based on the union of tables by adding two mapping rules or more and you can not join tables in universe.
Better approach is first 1. create target tables based on the source tables and join them in the universe.
Thanks,

Pros and Cons not determining / having a Delivery Plant in Sales Order?
Hi Mates
Here I have come-up with one more (weired?) requirement from my client.
We have two plants manufacturing same product and supplying to all customers (some time in same sales order with two different line items).
At the timeof creating a sales order, marketing does't know from which plant the material will move and hence they don't want to fill the Delivering Plant field (VBRP-BUKRS at Shipping tab) for each Item.
They are insisting me to map it as above though I had explained about various pros and cons for not determining a mandatory delivery plant
in sales order like the requirements and shipping stuff.
Yet, yet they want this.
Has anyone come across this kind of requirement before? What best you had done for that?
Can I ask you what are the Pros and cons on not having a Delivery Plant at Sales Order level?
what if I could determine it Delivery level?
Any comments, suggestions, replies and advices are taken humbly.
Cheers
Ajay Kumar VeerankiDear Mahulenka
Thanks a lot for the reply. It do have helped me.
Yest it is VBAP-WERKS (typo error ).
Infact I had given the same solution for the issue.
Interstingly, they are insisting on a better solution fit for their requirement. Anyway shall 'highlight' the points again to them try to get it solved
Just wondering has anyone faced the same situation before.
Thanks again for the reply and good luck

What are the Pros and Cons of Using Batch Numbers over Serialization
Dear SAP Gurus:
Will someone please give me the benefits of using Batch Management over serial numbers in this case scenerio, or vice versa:
Client wants to trace all the components of an assembly in a BOM. Even the Raw material. The client sends the material out today and has the vendor assign serial numbers to the individual pieces, the client gives the range of serial numbers to use. We are looking at using batch numbers to accomplish this and issue one material and batch number to a production order. Then use MB56 batch where used functionality to view history. I am wanting to understand the benefits of this. Please advise and points will be awarded as always.
Also, in this scenerio, can you issue multiple material/batch numbers to one vendor op that has its own production order?Yes it is a subcontract.
Example: This is the solution but need the pros and cons of doing this scenerio
Sheet of metal sent to vendor to make lets say 1800 peices of material number nas5703-01. All 1800 pieces come back and issued to a production work order using one bacth number for one material item so that batch number can be traced in history in MB56 and a fit up report. -
What are the pros and cons of installing java+abap stack for portal?
Hi all,
1.What are the pros and cons of installing java+abap stack for portal?
2.what effect it does on the ume options to be choosen??
3.for the purpose of integration of r3,bw and crm on portal and crm 4.0 60.2.3 business package which option of stack(java or abap or both)will be good option and which ume option while installation should be choosen?

RajendraHi Rajendra,
The NetWeaver Installation Master Guide offers some good scenarios on the pros and cons:
https://websmp201.sapag.de/~sapidb/011000358700005412792005E.pdf
In a nutshell:
ABAP+JAVA
Pros
- Decrease # of servers required to administer the portal
- Less costly
Cons
- Upgrades could be dependent on ABAP and Java release level
- Additional load on the server due to ABAP stack
- Limited scalability
JAVA and ABAP on separate server
Pros
- Improved performance
- Allows each system to be single-use purpose therefore downtime does not affect other components
- More scalable
Cons
- Adds complexity to landscape
- Additional costs
