Prosumer Camcorder Recommendation

I have been using a Sony DCR-VX2100 for five years now, and want to make the jump to HD and also away from Mini DV tapes to avoid capture from tape (and moving parts). The 2100 has been the perfect camcorder for our purposes-capturing summer camp action...some low light campfires, drama productions etc. but also compact enough to take out in the field. Any recommendations for the new camcorder? Canon? Sony? Models? Where to buy? Thanks in advance.

G_Stray,
I am in exactly the same boat as you are....Been using the vX2000 for years now and it is time to move on......
Looked all over for the "recommended cameras" discussions page without any luck...
I was actually going to ask the same question in this forum as I am editing in FCP and want a camera which is compatible ..... which would in turn make this the proper forum for camera recommendations .....
Really am leaning towards the Sony EX-1 (thus my price range) .
Also looking at the Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme card. Wondering how many of you have that card.
Want to shoot something that I can play on my 55" Samsung LCD TV...and get my moneys worth out of both a quality camera and my HD LCD TV.

  • HD camcorder recommendations that fit FCE workflow?

I hope nobody minds me asking this, but I'm about to enter the world of HD and would appreciate a few experiences/recommendations/tips from those of you who'd put their hands on it.
I'm considering Canon VIXIA HV30 or similar. I understand that using a tape may result in less compressed video footage. Yet, I'm baffled how one can squeeze 1080 footage on a Mini DV. Thanks for your thoughts on this...

    Hi(Bonjour)!
HDV can "squeeze" around 25 mbit of video/audio info on standard miniDV tapes by using the MPEG compression sheme with long group of pictures (GOP) of 0.5 second.
So there is one complete image at every 0.5 second with mulitple images in between.
With standard def miniDV tapes, there is more possibility of drop out than with HDV quality miniDV tapes as HDV tapes contains a double layer of oxide. A drop out with a long GOP structure seems an "hole" of 0.5 second... a very bad thing.
Tape based HD camcorder are more "old school" than the newer AVCHD format based on hard drive or PC card camcorder, but tape is an affordable way to archive material.
Google "HDV vs AVCHD" to get more infos about consumer and prosumer HD formats.

  • Any camcorder recommendations?

Hi experts. Have bad experience with Sony (DVD Camcorder). Was not compartible with iMovie (tried really everything!!!). Sold it now. Could anybody recommend one? Do the new ones (with harddisk) work or will I get the same problems as with the dvd's? I also had to buy a new printer. My old HP had no batch for my new intel-baby.

    Thanks
I have a sony W1 5mp, not really used the video function much
    though.
From what I have read Mini DV tape seems to be better quality
    than DVD or
Hard Drive in that price range.
    Thanks again

  • Camcorder recommendations

My 13 yr old grandson has been making and editing videos for a number of years. He uses a Macbook and Final Cut Express to edit his films. He films action videos with two or three "actors" both indoors and out. His camcorder until now has been a Flip but it is time to upgrade. The new camcorder must have an external mic jack (and perhaps there are other must-haves that I am unaware of, eg, lights???). budget for the camcorder is $500. Can anyone recommend a particular camcorder that is Apple compatible. Family members are looking to buy camcorder accessories for Christmas presents so any recommendations for those are also appreciated.

I'd suggest the following model lines for your stated price range, but you will have to do your own research to see what specific models best meet your requirements.  There are models in each line under $500 that have inputs for external microphones.
    Canon Vixia HF series
    Sony HDR-CX and HDR-XR series
    Panasonic HDC-TM and HDC-HS series.
I can also recommend the Canon HV40 and its predecessors the HV30 and HV20.  However they are HDV camcorders and while the HDV format is still very much in use it has largely been overshadowed by AVCHD camcorders in the marketplace.
At a minimum, make sure the camcorder is an AVCHD or HDV camcorder.  If those logos are not on the camera and/or in the manual then beware. (Beware if the specs only say H.264, MPEG4, AVC or HD but  don't actually specify AVCHD or HDV.)
Also, you are correct in specifying an external mic jack; this is a requirement for any decent video.   The other thing I'd recommend is a good tripod with a fluid video head.  Make sure it's a good sturdy tripod.  I am partial to Manfrotto tripods (for example the 190XB legs or 055xdb legs and 701 head or 501hdv head) but the most important thing is that the tripod be sturdy regardless of brand.  A cheap tripod that isn't sturdy will quickly be a wasted purchase.  The other starter accessories I'd suggest include a UV or Skylight filter for the lens (to protect the lens from dirt & fingerprints), a case and a spare battery.
One more thing ... may I suggest B&H Photo Video.  They are an exellent vendor whose knowledge, selection, prices, delivery & reliability are top notch.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with B&H in any way except as a long-term, happy customer and I do not receive any compensation of any kind for recommending them.

  • Camcorder recommendations for use with MBP?

    Hello all,
I could have sworn I posted this earlier but I can't find it.
I'd be very grateful indeed for any recommendations and hints for a MBP compatible Camcorder from those who use one on a semi pro basis with the MBP. I'm a bit unfamiliar with the technology as it's exploded since I last looked. I need one that is PAL compatible with good picture quality and around the $900 range. PAL, then picture quality, then weight are the main factors in that order.
    Many thanks is advance.
    Cheers.

Thank you all very much indeed for taking the time to reply. Very much appreciated and very helpful. I've narrowed down the choices significantly - PAL compatibility seems to be the minor sticking point - difficult to find PAL compatible cameras in the US - I thought it didn't matter any more, but apparently it still does.
    Thanks very much.
    Cheers.

  • HD Camcorder Recommendation Compatible with g5

    Hi All,
So my bro in law wants to buy a new HD camcorder, however he has an older g5 which I know basically isnt compatible with any new cameras due to the way they process video. Can anyone recommend an HD Camcorder, nothing highend just something that takes good video that will work with his G5...Thx everyone. Looking forward to your feedback

If your bro is sticking with a G5, then you need to look for an HDV camcorder.
The *Canon HV20, HV30 and HV40* have very good reputations. The HV40 is about $650 at B&H PhotoVideo. The HDV 20 & 30 are slightly older models; you may or may not find one new, but there should be lots of good used ones around.

  • HD Flash Drive Camcorder Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a high quality prosumer HD flash-based video camera...roughly in the range of $250-350? I want to stick with a camera that is compatible with iMovie and FCP. I've checked the Apple site for compatibility concerns, but there still seems to be hundreds to pick from
I tried a Sony HDR-CX190, but the video was terrible and the sound pickup was awful. I was going to try the Canon Vixia HFR300, but I heard the battery was only 30 minutes, unless you bought a more expensive battery.
Am I expecting too much for this price range?  Will I need to higher in price? I use a JVC GY-HM150U at work, but don't need anything that high-end.
    Any help is appreciated

I'm looking for something in this range as well. Willing to go a bit higher in the price range, if the quality is there. Seems to be a lot of junk on the market.

  • HDD Camcorder recommendation

we are looking to buy a hard-drive camcorder (at least this is the format we prefer). I am looking for something that is a simple plugin model. I have been reading about converting JVC .mod files using toast etc and converting files is something I don't have time for.
I like the fact that there is no media, just record and upload then burn if I choose. I want something that i can edit on imovie and then burn right to DVD for my DVD player.
Is this possible? or should I be shopping for a DVD camcorder...
    thanks
    Saan

I recommend that you stay away from DVD camcorders. Stick with SDHC or HDD.

  • Camcorder recommendations for QTSS

    Hey all,
Don't know if this is the place to post this query, but here goes:
My boss has asked me to set up a live streaming setup (with quicktime broadcaster and QTSS). I want to use a DV camcorder for the increased quality, but we're not going to be recording to DV tape (don't need to.)
Problem is, many camcorders have a sleep funcion that kicks in if the camera is not in "record" mode.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get around this, or any recommendations for camcorders that don't go to sleep?

Well, mine's a Canon GL1. But the same "trick" worked on older VHS models I have, too. And I've been in situations where DJs and such were perplexed by this, and taking the tape out worked for them, too. Honest. Try it. Report back, please -- I'd be surprised if it DIDN'T work.

  • Camcorder recommendation

Purpose is to shoot family events indoors and outdoors.
I would be uploading the final videos to personal website to share with friends.
    Price range $1000
    HDV or AVCHD?
    CMOS or 3CCD?
    For HDV, tape or miniDV?
    For AVCHD, flash or HDD?
Editing software - iMovie'08 or iMovie HD 6?
Also, Any preference on the hosting sites for better data rate?
    Thanks in advance, Eswar

I offer a different perspective. I sold my miniDV camcorder, and bought a AVCHD Canon HF100. I use iMovie 08 to download, and either use that or iMovie 06 or FCE to edit. The camera can be found for around $500 now, though I purchased it for $600 at Amazon. Very small, high quality results.
It uses SD cards, so there are no tapes to mess with. Though I hated iMovie 08 initially, I have found it to be fun when just needed to make clips to upload to YouTube or my Mobileme account. Yes, the MobileMe hosting is slow, but I like the integration with iMovie.
Check out my site, www.humanrightscity.com, and look for the video links at the bottom left. Yes, not professional, but considering it was done without hassle...well, I can recommend the camera and hosting with Apple (Amazon offers discount MobileMe accounts). Hugh

  • Camcorder recommendations please

I just purchased a new macbook which does not have firewire. Any recommendations on a new camcorder, please??? I ill use primarily for new granddaughter and hiking. Looking at Sony and Canon high def.

I just purchased a new macbook which does not have firewire.
Well, that narrows your choices significantly right there.
Looking at Sony and Canon high def
And that narrows them again. Part of this equation is what application do you intend to edit with? If you just want to stick with iMovie, here's the complete list:

If they say "MPEG2", then they're not HD.

  • Does anyone have a camcorder recommendation?

Does anyone out there have a recommendation for a mini-DV camcorder in the $400-500 price range that will work well with iMovie 6? I assume firewire is required. MacMall has several cameras that say they are Mac compatible but don’t have firewire. What’s up with that? Does this mean they expect you to import via USB? Some have iLink but say no firewire. I thought they were the same or similar. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

I am looking for a new camcorder as well in the same price range. Been looking at the Canon Elura line or a few Sonys. Just upgraded to iLife 06 and would like to get a new camcorder. Ideally, one that would have analog a/v inputs as well. I have lots of analog tape to convert to digital and bring into iLife as well as planning on shooting new footage and would like the best compromise. Any specific models I should be looking for and/or steering away from? Otherwise, I'll just get a Mac compatible digital camera and get a 3rd party VHS to digital converter...Any thoughts?

  • Sub-$1K AVCHD Camcorder Recommendation

I searched for a bit and did not find anything directly related to my question.
Can anyone recommend a sub-$1K AVCHD camcorder for use with PrE 9? I'm interested mainly in quality of footage and compatibility with editing software but there are probably other considerations that I need to be educated about.
    Thanks.

    John,
Thanks. That's the kind of info I'm looking for.

Can anyone recommend a cheap/reasonable HD camcorder for indoor sports, that works well with PE 8?

HD as in hi-def, right? Not as in hard drive.
Best choice is the Canon HV series. These are tape-based HDV camcorders that sell for about $600-700. It's hard to find tape-based camcorders in stores, but you can still find them online. Premiere Elements handles these video files very efficiently and the results are excellent!
The Canon HF series are AVCHD hard-drive hi-def camcorders. They cost about the same and are pretty easy to come by. But AVCHD can be very challenging for some computers to work with. Most people successfully editing it are using quad core processors -- and some people have found that even that isn't enough to work with AVCHD in Premiere Elements 8.
So it's your call. These are both excellent camcorders. Though, if it were me, I'd definitely try to find a Canon HV.
